I am so down bad for this book it’s not even funny!!!

“Not Another Love Song” follows Gwen Jackson and Xander Thorne,  two string players, as they fight their attraction for each other while competing for center stage.

From the moment Alex insulted Gwen’s form when she played the cello, I fell in love with them as characters and their dynamic. Gwen’s people pleasing tendencies struck a chord with me as someone who shares that same quality and enriched my understanding of her motivations for sticking with the Pops Orchestra when people were taking advantage of her. I enjoyed reading from her point-of-view and getting bits of Alex’s perspective throughout the novel. Soto is very intentional about her placement of chapters written from his perspective to add intrigue surrounding his past. 

Gwen and Alex’s romance is a perfectly paced, sizzling symphony and I was entranced by each movement: colleagues, rivals, duet partners, lovers. Their every interaction vibrated in my bones because their chemistry is that palpable! I adored Alex’s subtle gestures—like the way he made Gwen’s favorite drink for her, offered to buy her shampoo when she stayed with him, and attempted to make her pancakes—just as I adored Gwen for loving all of Alex and helping him become more in tune with himself. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the cello scene that is depicted on the cover. Julie Soto was not messing around when she wrote that scene! Her lyrical writing brought the music they made together to life and I could cut the sexual tension with a knife. It took my breath away. I didn’t want it to end because it hit so hard! This whole book does quite frankly. 

In conclusion, whatever Soto writes, I’m buying!!

Gwen Jackson has always had a knack for the violin, and though she wasn’t educated at top musical schools her talent has landed her at the NY Pops Orchestra. Working along side her, is reclusive, arrogant Xander Thorne who is a master on the cello and a musical prodigy. Xander is not pleased when Gwen is offered the role of First Chair, especially since he has been wishing for it for years, so he takes his anger and criticisms out on Gwen! Their hostility towards each other has ripples throughout the orchestra, but the beautiful music they make together is undeniable (and so is their chemistry!).

This was a cute story. I had never read a rivals to lovers romance before, so I liked seeing how their relationship played out. And of course, Julie Soto is the queen of spice! The cello scene alone is enough to get anyone interested in a string instrument 🥵😂 While I will say her first book, Forget Me Not is still my favorite, (Elliot Bloom for life!) I did come around on Xander/Alex after I remembered that he is/was based on Kylo Ren and that’s why he’s such an a**hole the first half of the book and he still deserves love lol.

can I say how much I love how affectionate the rangers are with each other

The Mystic Force team really does feel like a group of childhood friends with Nick being the new guy who took a bit to fit into the group . The way they tease each other (painting each other, Nick pretending there’s a frog on Madison’s shoulder in the Daggeron episode, and the jokes about turning into a tree) but also comfort each other (Vida with Xander in the tree episode, Xander and Nick when they were alone in the store, Trying to cheer Madison up)

I also love how much physical they are with each other. Just take this clip with Stranger Within and see their movement.

Honestly I love how the cast really shows how close they are. It really feels like family. A close family. They are willing to protect each other but still like teasing and gettin annoyed at each other.

Another day, another song!

Ophelia's in the studio with Thorne for a bit to work on some new material. He's done a lot of work on the instrumentals, Ophelia's ironing out the lyrics.

Thorne is easy to work with, and he's very receptive to Ophelia's ideas. She's honestly surprised, since he's the more established name in the biz, but he seems to have humbled himself quite a bit. He's just happy to work with someone just as talented.

Thorne: It's coming together nicely, great work.

Ophelia: You too. Want to grab a quick lunch?

Thorne: Nah, I've gotta help Tavi with some stuff for her launch party tomorrow. I'll be sure to snag you a signed copy of her book.

Thorne: You know, she thinks the world of you and your husband. Tell him I appreciate him working with her on the nectar for her launch party.

Ophelia: He's loved doing more stuff outside of the bar.

Ophelia works with Thorne, she supposes Xander can work with Octavia.

Just because Ophelia's done with work for the day doesn't mean her job is done. She's got a tummy time session with Wren.

Look at Wren crying and peeking at me to see if I'm paying attention to her dramatics. Nice try, kid. This is for your own good!

Wren gets rewarded with some peas for her effort. See, it's not all bad!

Gemma: Mom, we're still going to Claudia and Marina's family's ranch tomorrow to meet Claudia's horse, right?

Ophelia: Yes, Gem, I arranged everything with Paisley. Don't worry, I wouldn't forget.

How could she? Gemma's been talking about it for days.

Ophelia: Are you able to come too, Xander? I hear the loading screen to Chestnut Ridge is beautiful.

Xander: I'd love to, but Octavia's launch party is tomorrow and she asked me to come. She said I could network with people who might want to buy some of my nectar.

Ophelia: Oh, okay. I'll be sure to take pictures.

Xander's career is important to him too. She doesn't want to stop him from pursuing his passion in life just because she's… definitely NOT jealous of all the time he's spending with Octavia.

Time for another bike riding lesson with Gemma. Jaden's working on some fishing with Xander for his scouting, so it's up to Ophelia.

Ophelia: There you go, nice and steady.

Gemma's determined. If she can ride a bike, she can ride a horse!

Gemma hasn't QUITE mastered biking yet, but her motor skills are fully mastered! That'll definitely help the process. And look, now she's actually putting her feet on the petals instead of pushing the bike forward with her feet. Improvement!

Ophelia: That's my girl! You'll get it in no time!

She picks her eldest up and swings her around, reveling in her laughter. Ophelia's so proud of her accomplishments in her career, but she and Xander have four big accomplishments that she's most proud of.

Chip: Why me?

Xander: because why not,

Chip: I’m not getting yelled at.

Vida: How about you go Xander?

Xander: Why not yourself Vee? You’re her sister.

Vida: And I know my sister when it’s that time of the month. She’s scarier than me

Chip: Very scary

Madison: If you guys don’t shut up, I’m breaking the project in half and we’re all going to fail the Project!

Have an assortment of Mystic Force headcanons that I've accumulated since I started rewriting CoD/CoL (now known as Emergence and ???):

Madison is an unabashed niche horror movie aficionado. This always surprises people, but she could talk about early 90s SOV, giallo, or the evolution of the slasher film for ages.

Her happy place in Briarwood is an old movie shop. They know her by name there, and always have recommendations among the new finds.

Briarwood itself is a super hippie town. Drum circles in the park, vegan bakeries, a huge pride parade every year. They're on the forefront of both marriage equality and cannabis legalization, even by California standards.

Nick has lived EVERYWHERE. His parents moved for work constantly, and so he and his sister have lived on every continent except Antarctica.

Xander and Chip are incredible cooks. Nick is pretty good too. Maddie is passable, and Vida is a complete disaster. Do not let Vida near a kitchen.

Leelee inherits the Vampire Queen throne after Necrolai/Nikki is turned human. She's surprisingly good at it. After some bumps, her rule becomes an unparalleled time of peace for vampires.

After high school, Chip tries a million things, and he's pretty successful at most of them. He takes over his uncle's farm, starts a meadery, does freelance alchemy, runs the local COUNTV chapter, and helps train new knights and wizards, and that's just the everyday stuff.

Leelee works to improve human-vampire relations, and teams up with Chip to help smooth things out. He begrudgingly helps, but warms up to it eventually.

Maddie and Xander are the only ones of the core 5 to go to college. Maddie studies film and Xander gets a business degree (so he can manage Chip's constantly-growing sprawl of ventures).

Vida goes on tour. She wins her first Grammy a year or two later, and eventually goes the Trent Reznor route of scoring films. It starts with Maddie asking for help with a hard-to-score film and spirals from there.

Nick gets taken on as an apprentice at a body shop. He's a prodigy with fixing things, especially vehicles, and when the owner decides to retire, Nick buys the shop off him. They mainly fix cars and motorcycles, but if you have something no one else can fix, he'll take a crack at it.

Maddie's first film does numbers on the smaller festival circuits; her second film is screened at Cannes and wins a Palme d'Or.

In Briarwood, everyone knows they're the Rangers, but the knowledge doesn't travel very far outside the borders. A few people know, but it's such an open secret that it almost never comes up. It's just a fact of life in Briarwood, so most people never really mention it.
