Binderary week 2 book 1! Bound the infamous My Immortal, specifically the equally infamous community typeset by @renegadepublishing. I wanted to make the cover look a mix of classy and fun so as to possibly catch passersby unawares if/when they open it XD.
Some photos of my favorite pages included in the post--this thing is a travesty, y'all (complimentary, adoring). I have to say, reading the typeset version of this is only slightly more incomprehensible than reading the actual version of it on ff.net (which I did! Many moons ago, mostly for the fandom history of it all LOL). The folks who did the typesetting did an excellent job of making it somewhat readable while also making it just. The absolute Most.
Fake gilded edges done with black metallic acrylic paint, and the bookcloth was purchased as scrap bookcloth during Renegade's field trip to [Major City name's] Book Arts Center last year!

FINAL RESULT: The majority of voters are real goffiks!!!!1!1!!🦇
My Immortal is a Harry Potter based fan fiction serially published on FanFiction.net between 2006 and 2007. From Wikipedia: “Though notable for its convoluted narrative and constant digressions, the story largely centers on a non-canonical female vampire character named ‘Ebony Dark'ness Dementia Raven Way’ and her relationships with the characters of the Harry Potter series, particularly her romantic relationship with Draco Malfoy, culminating in her travelling back in time to defeat the main antagonist of the series, Lord Voldemort. The work takes its name from the song ‘My Immortal’ by Evanescence.
My Immortal is popularly regarded as one of the worst works of fan fiction ever written. Since the work's publication, it has gained infamy for its constant grammar and spelling errors, plot inconsistencies and complete disregard for the original Harry Potter source material. Despite this, the series has also inspired multiple derivative works, including a YouTube web series, and is viewed with nostalgia for adolescent fan life. Before its removal from FanFiction.Net, My Immortal allegedly gained between 8,000 and 10,000 reviews per posted chapter, most of which were negative and contained flaming. The quality of the writing and the author's apparent goth lifestyle also drew attacks and mockery from users on Encyclopedia Dramatica, TV Tropes, LiveJournal, Something Awful, YTMND and YouTube.
The author's identity has never been confirmed and has been deemed ‘unsolvable’. The author originally published the story under the username ‘XXXbloodyrists666XXX’ and gave their name as ‘Tara Gilesbie’. In September 2017, someone claiming to be the author updated a FictionPress account stating that she had created an active Tumblr account under her real name; an effort to locate this Tumblr account resulted in the account of young adult novelist Rose Christo. She has since stated that she was one of two co-authors of My Immortal and had provided evidence of her authorship to Macmillan Publishers, but controversy that same month over factual errors in her then-forthcoming memoirs has led to doubt as to her authorship.”
Do you know which piece of literature this is from?

do you think i could get away with saying for reading class I read a 5000 word fanfic? ( as a homeslschooleder)
Oh, definitely! I think it depends on how you word it!
I will note, however, that 5K might be a little short to swing it. For reference: Of Mice and Men is 30k and the first Harry Potter is about 77k
If I were to claim a fanfiction like- oh let’s just say the infamous My Immortal by XXXbloodyrists666XXX for example, I would probably say something like:
“Oh, yes, the novel I read is called My Immortal, I found a digital copy on an indie publishing site. It’s about 44 chapters- so not too long. Yeah, it was very interesting, A really cool interpretation of some classic vampire tropes filtered through the lens of the early 2000s. It explored themes like teenage drama and self discovery/sexuality as well as what happens when adults don’t deal with the consequences of their own actions, instead of pushing them off onto the younger generation. It had a very unique narration style, which reflected the main character’s personality as well as the values of era in which it was written.”
Or some such nonsense :)
#I hope that helps!#thank you for this very interesting ask!#i regret having subjugated yall to my immortal again but it’s such a classic that most people are familiar with#ao3#fanfiction#fanfic#writing#fandom#ao3 shenanigans ask#ao3 shenanigans#my immortal#harry potter#ebony dark'ness dementia raven way

My Immortal by XXXbloodyrists666XXX (Tara Gilesbie)
Being a hobbyist bookbinder gives you a lot of power in curating what populates your bookshelf. Sometimes I use that power wisely, like saving my fiancé €50 by handbinding their PhD thesis (not shared, since it's labelled with their name).
Other times, I give iconic works of fiction the Penguins Classics Clothbound treatment they don't deserve—only true goffs will understand. (AN: f@#% off prepz!)
It's an early Christmas gag gift, which I'm considering pairing with a transcript/mock screenplay of The Room.
A5 case binding on white printer paper
Faux velour bookcloth + endpapers
HTV cover titling and motifs
Handsewn headbands
Gouache painted edges
Inspired by this incredible work of art, which was one of the posts that lured me into bookbinding in the first place. You can see samples of the wonderful typesetting in that post.
I used this resource to generate the HTV cover elements, which made things so much quicker and more precise than doing it from scratch. The temptation to use the generator for EVERYTHING I make from here on out will be hard to resist.
That said, I have about... four?? ongoing binding projects, all with unique covers. There's no danger of Enoby becoming Just Like Other Girls yet 🧛♀️

I am very stressed about a thing that I can’t discuss right now that I have literally no control over, so here’s some
fanfic writer asks
that I came up with all on my own. Ask ‘em, share ‘em, do whatever.
Have you pulled inspiration from media sources other than the property your fic is related to (a plot point from a TV show that has nothing to do with the characters/setting of the fic, a line from a book, etc.)? If so, for which story? Why did you find that media source compelling?
What is your favorite paragraph from (insert story title you want to know about here, or leave it blank for writer’s choice)? Is there a reason it’s your favorite?
What is the most amount of research you’ve done for the smallest detail? What was the detail and how much time/effort went into researching it?
Share a headcanon about (character name) in (story title)!
Is there a tiny detail in one of your fics that you feel goes tragically unnoticed?
What is your favorite type of feedback to receive (favorites/kudos, comments, DMs, complete and utter silence in the pursuit of remaining unperceived?)? If comments or DMs or anything else involving a reader writing, do you have a particular type of feedback that excites you more than other types?
Share a line or paragraph you’ve written that you don’t think will ever actually be posted in anything! (Or, if you don’t hoard cut sentences and passages like I do, share anything you want that has yet to see the light of day!)
Is there a story idea you have that you would love if it could appear fully realized but that you do not think you’ll ever write yourself?
Do you prefer to read angst or fluff? Which do you prefer to write?
If you could banish a single trope to live at the bottom of the ocean, never to be seen again by any human eyes (or at least your own), which trope would that be?
Conversely, if you had to pick a single trope to read for the next seven-and-half years, which trope would that be?
What are your thoughts on slow burn romances?
Are you secretly Tara Gilesbie aka XXXbloodyrists666XXX aka author of infamous Harry Potter fanfiction serial My Immortal? (you can trust me; I won’t tell anyone, pinky promise)
Has anyone ever created anything (art, a podfic, another fic, etc.) inspired by your work? Which work? How did you feel about that?
Is there any genre, trope, or style that you find particularly challenging to write? Do you enjoy the challenge or prefer to avoid it?
Is there a commonly held misconception about one of your stories that you’d like to correct for the masses?
What does your editing process look like?
Share a headcanon relating to (insert desired theme here)!
What was the very first fanwork you ever created? (I’m talking like maybe you made a little book out of construction paper and staples with your favorite Disney characters drawn in it when you were five years old or you drew a comic about a movie you saw when you were a preteen. That sort of thing.)
Is there anything about any one of your fics that you have been dying to discuss but haven’t had the chance to?
