Stained Glass Primarchs: Vulkan

The Lord of Drakes may not possess the dazzling charisma of Fulgrim or Horus, nor the angelic presence of Sanguinius. But his pure soul and intense honesty is just as inspiring to his gene-sons than any of those other traits could be.

The first meeting of the terran Salamanders with their nocturnean brothers and Vulkan after they fought a giant Waaagh, is very telling:

When the last of the greenskins was a smouldering corpse, the warriors of Terra and Nocturne regarded each other, and Vulkan saw the alloy he needed had been forged on the fields of Antaeum. Brother had encountered brother and known that they were no longer lost to each other. Numeon and Orasus had kept to within a few metres of Vulkan during the entire rout. Now they dropped to their knees before him. The entirety of the Terran XVIII did the same.

‘No,’ Vulkan said. ‘Rise, my sons. I am your father, not your king. We do not kneel in fealty.’ They looked up at him and, after a hesitation, got to their feet again. Vulkan was not finished. ‘Kneeling is an act of respect. It is a tribute that must be earned. And you have earned it.’ He knelt, and the Legion in its entirety murmured in awe.

Artellus' willingness to make every sacrifice to bring back his Primarch is truly understandable.

The descent began. Izi’s head twitched on his command throne as he dreamed. His titan’s head twitched.

The Imperial Hunters had drawn the nimble warrior to its doom. Izi charged as the Phantom bore down on the Reavers of Legio Solaria with stunning alacrity. His gatling blaster tore into the aeldari titan’s dark, porcelain-like armature, yet it twisted away unfazed, blade darting toward him. Izi turned the thrust with a low swipe of his crackling power claw, an act of born of savage instinct rather than skill. The Phantom raised its guard, but they were already colliding. His foe was sent reeling. Izi darted forward, mauling the aeldari titan’s groin with his claw.

The ocean itself had risen against the settlers of Namor. At one point, the strength of the Salamanders legion had not been enough. Go! Izi watched the Salamanders fire their jump packs and arc away from his shoulders. They landed on the leviathan assaulting the settler-hive, and were away before detonations cracked the creature’s preternaturally hard shell. It flailed, racing towards Izi even as he raced towards it. The beam from his volkite destructor ruptured its body in a foul explosion, yet on it came. Izi tore the beast apart with his claw, limb by limb.

Izi awoke with a start, heart-reactor spiking. His spectro-metric eyes cycled and shifted. He registered the presence of his siblings. At long last his mag-restraints were off. They had landed. The immense conveyor doors were opening. A dozen warning lights flashed from within, sweeping beams across the night.

From the shadow stepped a Warlord Titan, greater than fifteen times the height of the assembled space marines. Its armour was a brilliant yellow, decorated with tall, black flames. It’s heraldic shields displayed battle honors from the XVIIIth Legion Salamanders and the Imperial Household, but it was the foreboding God’s Eye of the Legio Fureans that was most prominent on its carapace. Stepping forth, a great battle flag bearing a double-headed eagle, gold on black and devouring a serpent, unfurled and streamed from the Warlord’s back, stirred by the heatwash of its shield generators.

Two bright stars gazed down on the warehouse, shining from the god-machine’s head, a Mars-Beta pattern model that loomed underneath an armoured superstructure. Laser blasters were set upon its back. It’s left arm was a glowing plasma annihilator. It’s right an Arioch power claw that opened and closed in slow anticipation.

Stepping onto the tarmac, Chhota Raajakumaar howled with its war-sirens. The two Warhounds following in its wake echoed the call.

War Maniple XXVIII had arrived.

Taliya Maelorn sipped from her cup of recaff on the bridge of the Solitude as the strike cruiser returned to the materium.

“Jump successful, we’re just beyond the mandeville point in the JS-151 star system,” an officer called out. “Warp drive spinning down and gellar fields fading.”

“Good,” Taliya replied. “Run through preliminary system scans and find me that mystery ship.”

“Yes ma’am.”

Taliya leaned on a railing in the expansive bridge, passively watching as data slowly crawled onto the screens surrounding her. It would likely be hours until the Solitude’s impressive Deathwatch-grade sensor array picked up anything of note, but she liked to sit on the bridge for the first few minutes of data collection so as not to appear apathetic.

Valdred Tyrax, her one of her Deathwatch commandos, clearly shared no such worries. The Astartes let out a deep yawn as he lazily gazed out at the starfield surrounding them through the viewscreen.

“Tired already, Sergeant Tyrax?” she asked with a smirk. “I thought you’d been ordered to have a greater respect for bedtimes.”

“Oh, you know me, Lady Inquisitor,” the Blood Raven replied, running a large hand through his slicked-back brown hair. “Never had much of a stomach for boredom.” He took out a dataslate and began to read a novel he’d downloaded the night before.

Taliya chuckled and shook her head, then took out her own dataslate, reflexively re-reading the mission details for the millionth time.

A few days ago, her Ynnari allies had picked up an astropathic imperial transponder signal in this uninhabited system, so she’d taken the Solitude and a small detachment of Marines away from the grueling trench warfare battles on the civilized world of Anaris to check it out. While it was likely overkill to send a Deathwatch strike cruiser on such a mission, the Solitude had by far the fastest warp drive in the entire sector, so they’d likely be able to get here and back before any major offensive was missed.

A few pages into her reading, Taliya heard a ping from the Solitude’s sensors.

“Unidentified Imperial vessel detected,” an officer triumphantly announced.

“That was fast,” Valdred said with a raised eyebrow.

“Yes, sir. The ship is only 8 light minutes away. We must’ve had an incredibly lucky jump. We can be within real-time communication radius in a few hours.”

“The emperor has given us quite a gift,” Taliya stated. “Begin the acceleration burn to the ship immediately, and send a tightbeam comm message their way.”

“Yes ma’am. Comm is ready when you are.”

Taliya walked to the command console and leaned over a vox mic.

“Unidentified vessel, this is Inquisitor Maelorn of the Imperial warship Solitude. We are currently on an intercept course, and demand a schematic of your craft and a statement of your intentions. Respond immediately or be assumed hostile. Solitude out.”

“I don’t know about you all, but I’ll be on the edge of my seat for the next 16-ish minutes,” Valdred snarked. He hadn’t looked up from his dataslate.

THE SECOND GOLLOCH WAR

Hey all!

Its been a long time since we updated this blog... but in the meantime, we have been doing a lot of Heresy!

I have built a Word Bearers force, with demons (which I’ll feature!) I’ve finished 3K points of Salamanders, and started a fledgling (~750pts done so far) Raven Guard army. I’ve also built (and I’m in the process of painting) a Zone Mortalis board!

What we are currently excited about is the SECOND GOLLOCH WAR - look at aus30k.com for more information! Basically it is a global Heresy campaign, run by 11 different podcasts, who each have a month to present cool fluff, etc. You can record your forces and games on the website, and at the end of each month the fluff will update.

Currently we are fighting over PATERS WORLD - a ruined ash-strewn rubble heap, which the Traitors have smashed to pieces, and now the Loyalists are scrabbling to retrieve material and ammunition from.

Now... what forces am I using in this campaign? 

I am fielding Salamanders and Raven Guard, as Loyalists. I will be using both armies separately, and maybe as a shattered legion eventually. Will is of course using Night Lords. Sean will be using Emperor’s Children and Adam, surprise surprise, will use Orks.

These four lead a rag-tag force which made it off of Istvaan V alive. 

Everything changed at Isstvan.

In the black sands of that benighted world, brother fell upon brother and the Galaxy turned to madness.

Alvarex Maun, the Raven Guard Master of Descent, guided hundreds of thousands of dropships, landing craft, drop pods and spacecraft into the Urgall Depression at the start of the Isstvan V retribution operation. Utilising his Nightfall Pattern Strato-vox, the deployment of the Raven Guard Legion was a flawlessly executed ballet.

At the end of the bloody purge he barely managed to extract his personal Thunderhawk, with a wounded Corax aboard. The ship took more hits than even a phalanx of Tech Priests could have repaired in flight, and the ship went down hard miles outside the Depression.

Maun was thought to be dead, and Corax tearfully abandoned one of his most loyal captains as he fled into the wastes of Isstvan V.

But Maun lived.

He was dragged from the wreckage by a senior captain of the XVIIIth – Solomon Krayt. Krayt had managed to rally a force of mounted infantry and dreadnoughts to punch out of the Depression, scything through Night Lords led by the fearsome Sevatar. Most of his contingent had been lost in the mad dash to the jagged mountains surrounding the blood-soaked depression, where the Thunderhawk had gone down.

Krayt himself was badly wounded at the hands of Sevatar himself – but what was worse was the haunted look he carried. He had seen Vulkan consumed by the traitorous Perturabo’s holocaustic artillery barrage.

Maun managed to raise scattered Raven Guard elements using his Strato-vox, as Krayt’s artificers coaxed the ailing machine spirit of the venerable Thunderhawk back to life, against all odds. A menagerie of Raven Guard rendezvoused with the remaining legionaries, and they sped for orbit in the Thunderhawk.

A pair of vessels slipped through the Traitor blockade to pick them up – Nocturne’s Pyre, and The Nightslip, belonging to the Salamanders and Raven Guard respectively. The captain of The Nightslip – Lukas Duskborn – managed to stealthily manoeuvre the shattered survivors to the nearest Mandeville Point, where they made an emergency warp jump to safety.

Since then, the combined forces of Krayt and Maun have been a waking nightmare for traitors all over the Ultima Segmentum. They call themselves the Last Light – a candle in the darkness of the Heresy War. 

Most recently, they have made warp translation to the Golloch Cluster, following Imperial distress calls. They’ve arrived on the ruined and burning Paters World, and have made landfall, searching for supplies... 

We’ll be posting some battle reports here, which will also be on the aus30k website.
