I've been absolutely LIVING for these series lately, so I'm dropping my ultimate josei recommendations for when you need something that reflects the chaos of actual adulthood.

The God-Tier Josei Anime You Need In Your Life

Nana - Still the undisputed queen of josei anime. Two women named Nana with completely opposite personalities become roommates in Tokyo. One chases her musician boyfriend, the other is in a punk band. The relationships feel REAL - messy, passionate, sometimes toxic, and deeply human. The fashion alone is worth watching for (those early 2000s punk looks? ICONIC).

Paradise Kiss - By the same mangaka as Nana, this fashion-centered story follows Yukari as she gets pulled into the world of design students creating their brand "Paradise Kiss." The romance between Yukari and George is complicated, bittersweet, and refreshingly mature. Also, the animation is GORGEOUS.

Honey and Clover - Art college students navigating love, friendship, and finding their place in the world. The unrequited love storylines will absolutely wreck you, but in the best way. This show understands that sometimes love doesn't work out, and that's part of growing up.

Usagi Drop - A 30-year-old single man suddenly becomes the guardian of his grandfather's illegitimate 6-year-old daughter. This slice-of-life explores parenthood, sacrifice, and unconventional families with such tenderness. (Note: anime only - we don't talk about the manga ending in this house 💀)

Nodame Cantabile - A perfectionist classical music student meets an eccentric pianist who plays by ear. Their relationship develops naturally as they push each other to grow as musicians and people. The classical music performances are chef's kiss.

Why Josei Hits Different

What makes josei special is how it treats romance as just one part of a complex life. Characters have career ambitions, friendships, and personal growth arcs that exist independently of their love interests. The relationships feel lived-in and nuanced rather than idealized.

Also, can we talk about how josei characters are allowed to have gasp sexual desires without it being treated as scandalous? The frank approach to sexuality feels refreshing after shoujo's blushing and hand-holding (which I also love, don't get me wrong).

Lesser-Known Gems Worth Your Time

Chihayafuru - Technically seinen, but with strong josei elements. Competitive karuta (Japanese card game) becomes the backdrop for a story about passion, friendship, and subtle romance that develops over years.

Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku - Office workers who are secretly massive geeks navigate dating while being their authentic selves. The main couple starts dating in the FIRST EPISODE and then works through actual relationship challenges!

Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu - A historical drama about Japanese storytelling performance art with some of the most complex character writing I've ever seen. The love triangle spans decades and examines how our choices echo through our lives.

Final Thoughts

If you're feeling like you've outgrown the high school romances that dominate seasonal anime, don't give up on animated romance altogether! Josei offers the emotional depth and complexity that comes with adult relationships.

One thing about shoujo is that if you want to get into it now you have to understand that lately there hasnt been nearly as many shoujo animes in production as there are shounen, so to truly appreciate this type of anime you're gonna have to watch older stuff with animation that isn't as impressive or that doesn't look like what you expect from nowadays anime, but is still absolutely stunning in its own way. New shoujo anime are coming out a lot more these past two years, with older anime even getting new adaptations, but we went through a very dry period, and now we gotta make sure the new shoujo coming out can become popular enough that more and more stuff gets adapted

not to rant about the wotakoi romance writing for the 50th time but fuck it, LIST OF HIRONARU THINGS THAT SHOULD'VE HAPPENED IN THE MANGA:

Narumi reflecting on their first kiss (the one with the 'unfair attack'). I don't think she would've been ready for seeing him in a physical way like THAT just yet, but it would still impact her in some way. Or at least, she'd think about what it meant.

Narumi's 'oh' moment. I believe that in the manga, she didn't have a specific moment of feelings realisation and that her feelings developed in a much more subtle way. Like, she knows how she feels but isn't ready to say them out loud yet (which is why she finally does at the end). BUT: a chapter or a few chapters that really make the alarm bells go off in her head would've been nice.

FIRST TIME SHARING A BED, I'm very passionate about this. In the artbook, it's shown that Narumi takes the bed when sleeping over and Hirotaka sleeps on a mattress/futon on the ground next to her. Understandable, but I headcanon that they started sharing the bed occasionally sometime after their work trip. Maybe during the rare times Hirotaka sleeps over at Narumi's, they share the bed bc her bed is bigger than his.

FIRST TIME CHEEK KISS/FOREHEAD KISS/ETC. I understand why they didn't kiss until the end (even if it should've happened a liiiittle earlier imo), but the fact that we didn't get to see THIS??? Like COME ON. I think Narumi would've initiated a cheek kiss for the first time. But then there's official art of Hirotaka kissing her forehead (BUT ITS JUST ART AND NOT IN THE STORY SO IT DOESN'T COUNT).

Flashbacks of their childhood together. Could be funny scenes of them being idiots, could be something more serious. I mostly want to see them being idiots together (bc that's the most charming ship dynamic to me).

Honestly, just more chapters of them having fun together and showing how their dynamic works so well. Them being weird and awkward together, but then laughing it off is just. So them. please. just. a crumb please.

some things i liked for each coloring: bokuto: honestly this is so tiny but i liked the way i colored the msby on his jersey! the outstretched arm was so fun too but it got cut off :(

hirotaka: the hands!!! had so much fun with the red and blues <3 and i liked how the face turned out with the highlights!

tao: honestly loved how the whole thing turned out but ESPECIALLY the jacket that was one of my favs... had to make a new brush for it bc i was working offline but it turned out so good!

vash: loved loved loved coloring his jacket bc i NEVER know how to work with red but i honestly keep looking at it i love it so much. and the highlight on his nose was so fun to do too!

aya: THIS ONE WAS SO FUN. struggled with the pink and colors sooo much but then it was actually so fun and i loved the hair and the brown sleeves!

cherry: this one was so hard bc i could not find a high quality panel 😭 but i like how i colored his clothes, it feels very sweepy to me loll.
