On the World Health Organization's list of 10 chemicals of major public health concern, lead is a familiar villain. The toxic metal contaminates air, soil, water and food, and builds up inside bodies over time. Its most widely publicized health impact is neurological damage in children, often measured in the loss of intelligence quotient (IQ) points. But lead's pernicious effects don't stop in childhood nor at the brain. According to a new study in the journal Lancet Planetary Health, an estimated 5.455 million adults worldwide died in 2019 from cardiovascular disease (CVD) attributable to lead exposure — a toll more than six times higher than a previous estimate. The study goes on to provide what its authors say are the first monetary estimates of the total global cost of these lead-attributable deaths, along with the magnitude and cost of IQ loss in children under 5 years old. For 2019 alone, the study puts the combined toll of cognitive damage and CVD mortality at $6 trillion (based on projected loss of future income and an economic measure known as value of statistical life), with the greatest burden falling on low- and middle-income countries.

Protect your health for as long as possible, it does not last forever.
Stop looking around at other people to match their behaviour, instead of at the firsthand information and then acting accordingly to it.
The group is stupid. This is why we roll our eyes about "groupthink behaviour". It's not a positive.

WHO Declares Mpox a Global Public Health Emergency
The World Health Organisation on Wednesday declared mpox a global public health emergency for the second time in two years, following an outbreak of the virus in parts of Africa.
This announcement comes as health officials also warn of a sharp rise in cases in Toronto. On Tuesday, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention announced that the mpox outbreaks constitute a public health emergency, with more than 500 deaths reported so far this year, and called for international assistance to halt the virus's spread.
"Today, the emergency committee met and advised me that, in its view, the situation constitutes a public health emergency of international concern. I have accepted that," WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebrevesus said at a Wednesday media conference. "This is something that should concern us all."

Global health emergency declared by WHO due to mpox epidemic
On August 14, the World Health Organisation designated the continuing mpox outbreak in Africa to be a global health emergency on Wednesday. In response to worries that a more deadly strain of the virus, known as clade Ib, had infected four previously unaffected regions of Africa, the UN health body called an emergency meeting of its mpox committee. The Democratic Republic of the Congo was the…

— British Artist Yusuf Islam, Formerly Known as Cat Stevens, posted on X calling for Israel to be held to account. In his post, he said "I don't think we can ever look at Israel the same again. People have finally woken up to the long years of injustice inflicted upon the Palestinian people."
Stevens adds that the arrival of social media has countered reliance on the media for learning about the plight of Palestinian people.
On Monday morning, Israeli forces withdrew from Gaza's Al-Shifa Hospital after a two-week siege. The entire medical complex was left in ruins with bodies found scattered in the vicinity.
— A Norwegian Doctor Who Previously Volunteered in Gaza shared scenes from the aftermath of the Israeli army's siege on al-Shifa Hospital and condemned the assault.
"The name Shifa meaning 'The House of Healing'; now turned into a 'House of Death' by Israel and the US, burnt, totally destroyed to rubble and turned into a graveyard of patients, medical staff, relatives and refugees," wrote Dr Mads Gilbert in a post on X.
Earlier on Monday, Israeli forces withdrew from the hospital after a two-week siege, leaving in its wake destroyed buildings and piles of dead bodies.
Military officials said that its forces killed 200 people and arrested 900 during its 15-day military assault on the hospital. Gaza's civil defence put the figure of those killed at around 300. The army said it conducted its raid without harming civilians and medical personnel, but medical organisations and eyewitnesses have strongly rejected the claim.
Tumblr media
The World Health Organization said at least 21 patients died during the siege. Survivors told Middle East Eye that scores of civilians were killed during the fortnight-long siege. Gaza's civil defence arrived at the hospital on Monday to begin a recovery operation following Israel's withdrawal.
Outside in the courtyard, people dug graves to bury those killed whose bodies were left to rot over the past two weeks. Wafa news agency reported that a temporary cemetery that had been set up in al-Shifa was dug up by Israeli forces, with bodies exhumed and dumped in different areas of the hospital.
— Isra-heili Prime Minister Benjamin 🐖 Satan-Yahu called on the Knesset to pass the so-called Al Jazeera law this evening, which would allow the government to shut down foreign news networks operating in Israel.
The law would allow the prime minister and the minister of communications to order the closure of foreign networks in Israel and confiscate their equipment if they believe they pose "an actual harm to the state's security".
Tumblr media
Netanyahu promised to "immediately act to close Al Jazeera" after the law passes.
The prime minister's Likud party said that he spoke with coalition whip Ofir Katz to ask him to ensure the bill's passing through second and third readings today.
— The Israeli army announced the death of 20-year-old soldier Nadav Cohen and updated its death toll, saying 600 soldiers have now been killed since the start of the war in Gaza.
Of those 600, 256 have been killed since the beginning of the army's ground invasion.
— A Palestinian Surgeon was among those killed by Israeli forces during its two week raid on al-Shifa Hospital.
Tumblr media
Ahmad Maqadmeh was killed during the siege, according to his friend and colleague, British-Palestinian doctor Ghassan Abu Sitta.
"We worked together in the Great Marches of Return and the 2021 war and then this recent war. His dedication was unlike anything I have ever seen. We will never forgive," Abu Sitta wrote on X.
"He spent this war going from Shifa hospital to Al Quds Hospital and when he was free he would join me at Al Ahli. Always dedicated, always wanting to learn.
"He refused to leave the north and kept sending me photos of his surgeries. He leaves behind a wife and baby."
Abu Sitta added that Maqadmeh was a former recipient of the UK's Royal College of Surgeons' humanitarian innovation fellowship.

— Isra-heili Prime Minister Benjamin 🐖 Satan-Yahu will undergo hernia surgery tonight, his office announced.
His hernia was discovered by doctors "during a routine examination".
During the period of surgery, Justice Minister Yariv Levin will serve as acting prime minister.
The timing of Netanyahu's surgery is deemed critical, as families of Israelis held hostage in Gaza are staging a protest outside the Knesset building in Jerusalem, calling for a deal to release their relatives and accusing Netanyahu of deliberately sabotaging efforts to secure an agreement with Hamas.
On Saturday night, thousands of anti-government protesters took to the streets in Tel Aviv, chanting slogans against Netanyahu and calling for the government's resignation and early elections.
— World Health Organisation Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said around 9,000 patients urgently need to be evacuated from Gaza for lifesaving treatment abroad.
These patients are in need of treatment for wounds suffered in Israeli bombing, cancer treatment, kidneys dialysis, and treatments of other chronic conditions, Tedros wrote in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

Alcohol, according to the World Health Organisation, is a causal factor in more than 200 disease and injury conditions, and its harmful use is associated with 5 percent of deaths worldwide each year. As well as heart disease, drinking alcohol is associated with a risk of developing mental and behavioural disorders, including alcohol dependence, and major noncommunicable diseases such as liver cirrhosis and some cancers (at least six different kinds, including breast and colon cancer). Alcoholic drinks are classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) as a Group 1 carcinogen - the same as asbestos and tobacco. Alcohol is also a big contributor to injuries, including road crashes, violence and suicide. The burden from these tends to fall on younger age groups. Speaking of which, around 1800 babies are born with Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) in Aotearoa each year, a totally preventable lifelong condition encompassing a range of physical, cognitive, behavioural and neurodevelopmental disabilities. If the big stuff doesn't have you convinced, there are the many ways alcohol wreaks havoc in our everyday lives. It destroys our sleep, preventing the deep restful sleep we need. It's bad for our mood - contributing negatively to mood issues and mental health disorders such as anxiety and depression. And it's terrible for our nutrition, contributing to nutrient deficiencies, physical and mental performance and, because it's so energy-dense, weight gain.

Climate Change: the New Challenge to Public Health
Tumblr media
One of the biggest current challenges to public health are the perils to human health and health system attributable to climate change. The impact on different age groups and genders are varied. Environmental alterations result in respiratory and zoonotic diseases. There is urgent need for coordinated activities to combat this challenge.
Introduction
Climate change, as per the United Nations Climate Action panel, refers to long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns of the earth1. On a smaller scale, this is a part of natural phenomena; however, humans have intensified these alterations by increased burning of fossil fuels. This emanates greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide, which remain in the atmosphere, thereby trapping the Sun’s heat and raising mean temperatures1.
In the Twenty First century, the temperature of the earth is about 1.1◦C warmer than that in the late 1800s1. Apart from warmer temperatures, consequences of climatic variability also include droughts, fires, rising sea levels, floods, hurricanes and diminishing biodiversity1. In this review article, an attempt has been made to explain the effects of varying climate patterns on health outcomes and health systems using the WHO framework given below.
Tumblr media
Figure 1: The WHO framework health effects of climate change2 as depicted in the article “Climate Change and Health” on 30 Oct, 2021 [https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/climate-change-and-health]
As the framework is extensive, the authors decided to discuss only a few selected factors. Selection has been made based on their relevance from policy action point of view. Demographic factors, Air Quality and Health service delivery are selected from the vulnerability, exposure pathways and health system capacity respectively. Health risks are studied under zoonotic diseases and Respiratory illnesses and lastly, the health systems outcome will also be examined.
Demographic patterns
People who are least responsible for the greenhouse gas emissions are the most vulnerable to the adverse effects of climate change. Pertinent examples include people living in low-and-middle income countries (LMIC), those in Island nations, mountains, coastal and Polar Regions.
Gender analysis indicated that the probability of women dying in heat waves and due to cyclones (in Bangladesh and Philippines) is greater compared to males3. They are also the prime victims of food shortage, partner violence, mental health issues, and poor reproductive and maternal health3. It is also noted that the incidence of preeclampsia, uterine bleeding and low birth weight babies are increased in mothers who give birth post to any natural calamities4.
Children are particularly impacted by the atrocities of climatic alterations5. Overexposure of children to external environment puts them in risk of injury/bites from animals or insects resulting in increased incidence of zoonotic and vector-borne diseases. During the formative phase of children, it is not only physical changes, but also psychological developments occurring in them. Any emotional trauma they suffer during this period, for example, familial loss due to some natural perturbations, can be detrimental for aeons5.
Another vulnerable group is the older population. Most of them would be already suffering from physical and cognitive disabilities or poor mobility and their quick responses to climatic adversities would be impaired6. Majority of them would be dependent on caretakers, a few maybe depending on life-sustaining equipment or certain medications (which has to be refrigerated) and there may not be even power supply in the temporary shelters provided to them6.
The impact of climatic alterations encountered by the LGBT community will be more intense, as they are already deprived of the privileges of a societal inclusion. Most of them are homeless, jobless, and involved in prostitution for a livelihood. This would further escalate during calamities7.
