There are four species we can play as within Overwatch
The first are the humans who make up the majority of the heroes we can play as. There are sub parts to them such as the cybernetically enhanced, the genetically modified, and one unique case of a chronally dissociated pilot
Next is the genetically enhanced animals of which there are only two we can play as and both are tanks currently represented with a enhanced Gorilla (Winston) and an enhanced Hamster who fights in a giant hamster ball (Wrecking Ball)
Then there are the attempts at recreating Omnics with Orisa and Echo. I’m classifying them as this because they didn’t go through the awakening like the Omnics and instead are attempts to replicate the life that Aurora gave Omnics
Finally there are the Omnics themselves with Ramattra, Bastion, and Zenyatta (the only species other species that has at least one of them in each role [I would count BoB if he was playable]). However, Bastion is different from the other two because war bots like his model, at least most of them, didn’t go through the awakening. So he is a rarity among Omnics but if he could happen then it could also happen for others.
Now, why am I bringing this up? I want there to be break from releasing human heroes and a focus on releasing non human heroes
There are a bunch of test subjects that could be released as playable heroes, I mean there’s a voice line between Winston and Hammond mentioning a female test subject name Hypatia, give us some more animals to play as. Especially in the other roles, distribute the species to other roles and don’t lock them into just one
With attempts at recreating an Omnic life like Echo or Orisa I’m not expecting there to be many, but I would want at least one more who is evil just to have some contrast with the other attempts at creating the awakening
And with Omnics, given the importance they have to the story of Overwatch I’m disappointed there aren’t more of them. And two of them are Shambali while another is essentially a new born with how recently Bastion woke up from his coma. Having more Omnics that come from different walks of life would be a better representation of them, and showing that there are other war bots who awakened like Bastion should be something to consider. Plus, I want to play as Iggy, I want to play as rocker girl Omnic who is Tracer’s friend and represents the Omnics of London like how Tracer represents the humans of London, albeit the ones who support Omnic rights.
Look, the human heroes are great, I mean Reinhardt, Venture, and Moira are amazing characters just like the rest of the human heroes, but there are other species within the Overwatch world that need representation within the roster and not just the rare lore drop we get with comics and books

Tumblr media
Today’s Legends highlight is an arc from the 2013 Star Wars comics run from Dark Horse Comics, in which Leia Organa attempts to get the Rebels a new base by agreeing to marry the crown prince of Arrochar, and we’re talking with @lajulie24.
Tell us about your Legends highlight. What is it? What’s it about?
My highlight is part of the “Rebel Girl” arc from the 2013 Star Wars comics from Dark Horse Comics. The overall arc starts in issue #12, where we first hear about Arrochar, but the main parts of the arc are in issues #15-18, where things come to a head. The arc is set about a year after Yavin, and Leia comes back from a private mission and announces that the Rebels have been offered a base on the world of Arrochar, a planet in Hutt space, in exchange for Leia agreeing to marry their crown prince. Everyone from Mon Mothma to Han Solo to Wedge Antilles to Luke Skywalker is pretty dubious about this idea — Luke being the worst, and getting grounded by Wedge because his sulking is making him do a lot of reckless things during flight exercises— but Leia already feels extremely guilty about Alderaan and about recent losses, so she’s ready to go through with it.
Basically things start looking pretty shady on Arrochar from the jump, and Leia is not really happy about what she’s about to do, but she’s preparing for the wedding when the palace is bombed and a group of Star Destroyers shows up! Turns out one of the royal advisors betrayed the crown prince and has been courting the Empire the whole time (unbeknownst to the prince, who genuinely was into Leia and was sad that she wasn’t really into him). Luckily, Leia in fact did bring a blaster to her own wedding, she and Mon escape, Luke quits sulking long enough to defeat the trap he was lured into and escape with Han on the Falcon, and the Rebels’ new ion cannon saves the day.
What makes this a Legends highlight for you? What do you love about it?
Like many of the comics, this arc is a little bumpy for me — the quality of the artwork is a little uneven from issue to issue, with Leia getting some pretty weird expressions at times, and I do get annoyed that so often Leia’s plot lines tend to be things like “Leia tries to get needed resources for the Rebels by sacrificing herself” or “some fancy rich guy wants to marry Leia”, both of which are present here. But there are several things that make this arc enjoyable despite that, including:
1. Leia fixing X-Wings in her tank top my beloved (this also very much annoys the royals of Arrochar because she’s not proper enough for their tastes, also earlier in this series Leia is regularly flying an X-Wing in combat, so lots of great pilot Leia visuals)
Tumblr media
2. Han and Wedge both talk with Leia about her decision and while they respect it, they don’t like it (as evidenced by a gritted-teeth conversation between them before the wedding) and have each tried to let her know that she doesn’t need to do this for the Rebellion, that’s she’s done enough for the cause.
3. There is some gentle future HanLeia ship teasing throughout, including a few scenes where it’s clear Han’s preoccupied with someone and it’s definitely not the attractive fellow contractor he’s been working with (she notices that he’s distracted, and that it’s not about her).
4. There is a brief moment where we learn that Red Squadron has just been approved to use the “Rogue” designation, i.e. the beginning of Rogue Squadron here.
5. And of course, Leia does in fact bring a blaster to her own wedding, which she gives to Mon Mothma right before using her hand-to-hand combat skills to fuck up some guards (and obtain a new blaster in the process).
Basically, I enjoy that it’s centered around Leia, that she shows off her flying, mechanical, and combat skills, and that the people around her actually value her for those skills and feel like she deserves so much more than to be a bride in the court of Arrochar.
To learn more….
If you’d like to read more about this comics arc, check out Star Wars: Rebel Girl or Star Wars (2013): #12-18 at your favorite comic book store or online, or read the entry on Arrochar or the Rebel Girl entry on Wookieepedia.
And be sure to check out @from-a-legends-pov and our From a Legends Point of View fanfiction event. Writer signups are now open — access the Signup Form here (step-by-step Signup Guidelines available here), as well as our Overview and FAQ.

Heck I don’t actually remember if Pure Vanilla/Dark Cacao was a request or if it was something I just planned to do on my own. I know it started out as my own idea, but sometimes that happens and then before I get to doing it, someone requests it and I just make it a request, and I don’t remember if that happened here
But regardless, this was a drawing I made of the idea for a purecacao fankid on it’s own, and I’m posting it as such
Now you’ll notice that this isn’t my usual format. This is because this isn’t her official design, it’s just that last night, I had this idea for a design of her as a young child with Dark Cacaoian clothing, and so I just wanted to make a quick doodle to show you
It was just going to be that picture in the middle, as it’s more sketchy and rough, and clearly not how I usually do these fankid requests. However when I finished, I realized that I made her too small. See, if I may explain some things, for my poorly drawn comics and other things that use that particular brush (it’s the Narinder Pencil if you want to know), and I don’t like enlarging pictures drawn with it because the lines get all blurry and it loses its texture. Prior to the Charcoal Cheese comic, for my poorly drawn comics I tended to enlarge the sketch to fit the screen, and then I’d completely redraw the lines. But here, I had already colored the whole thing, plus it was multiple layers to redraw, so I didn’t want to. But I couldn’t just crop down the canvas to fit it because my square canvases are already 500x500 pixels, they’re very small (and also I think the small size might account for why they may not show up in the best quality, but I’ve been using this size for over 2 years and I’m set with it, and I feel like changing would be too much effort). And I feel like making it even smaller would just tank the quality even more
Though to be honest, I’m glad I made a second version with my proper sketching process, as I was better able to figure out her colors and design
Speaking of her design, yeah this is sort of what I’m thinking for her look, at least in terms of hair, dough and eye color. She’s not gonna keep the braid though, that’s just a kid thing
I feel like maybe I should give her streaks, but I’m not sure where to put them or what color
Also I realize that I forgot to put KitKats on her design. I wasn’t planning to originally since this is a little kid’s outfit, but also in some of the artbook drawings, young Dark Choco had small Oreo shoulderpads, so maybe she should have something similar. I had an idea for her wearing tiny KitKat shoulderpads, but I forgot them. Ah well
Hmm, does she look like a purecacao kid? I’m looking at her and I feel like she looks more like her own character than related to them. Maybe it’s the lack of streaks
Oh yeah, and one more thing I want to add, I’ve decided she’s a post-canon kid, as in Pure Vanilla and Dark Cacao got together after the events of the Dark Flour War and canon in general. The story in my head goes that Dark Cacao developed feelings for Pure Vanilla, but was hesitant to tell him about it, maybe because he’s socially awkward and wasn’t sure how to, maybe because Pure Vanilla and White Lily had something going on and he didn’t want to stir up drama between them. But regardless, Dark Cacao felt that it wasn’t so much of a big deal since they were immortal, he could tell him when he felt it was right. But then the Dark Flour War happened and Pure Vanilla seemingly died, with Dark Cacao never telling him how he felt. But then years later, Pure Vanilla came back, and while Dark Cacao was of course overjoyed, it also caused him to realize that even being immortal, they don’t have all the time in the world, and he needed to tell Pure Vanilla how he felt, and so during the events of Odyssey, he confessed to Pure Vanilla, and then likely sometime after Dark Enchantress’s defeat, they got together, and later had this girl
Also this means she has a (probably) 30+ year older brother in Dark Choco, but it’s all good
I feel bad just keeping her unnamed, but I don’t know what to call her. *sigh*
Any suggestions?
But yeah, I just wanted to show y’all this idea. Don’t know when I’ll be finishing her, but I’ll draw her officially at some point

Hihiii! I have appeared with an invisible microphone up to you (you seem very talk to me idk why- could be your banner on your profile hmm) Jonah and Lorraine? What’s their deal? (/nf ask ofc :]])
People like commenting on my banners and I just realized both my main and side have fucked up Markipliers. Hm.
Also. Cracks knuckles. Ok this will probably be NONSENSE I am very tired but here's a fucking run down ( maybe I'll add tomorrow/later idk)
Jonah and Lorraine are two of my OCS that are in this circle of my Darling Wonderful OCS aka the ones I actively think about and make content for. They're in the same realm as Dulcie and Eli and Marley and Vio. Which is to say My Main Ocs.
They're also the select few that have a story/narrative of some kind! Of which I'd like to one day actually write or make comics for.
The basics of Jonah is that she's essentially a super soldier experiment, not being "finished" but the newest model that's being worked on. All lab grown, not a "real person" and therefore is not treated as such. She's made as an organic war machine and is extremely strong and durable; tear tanks and armies apart with her bare hands strong and durable. But she's also INSANELY dehumanized and abused within her facility to the point where she's just kind of. Completely apathetic and numb and permanently in a Fight state of being as a defensive mechanism.
She ends up turning on the facility during a regular trial run of her progress and she SLAUGHTERS most of the lab and facility workers. She escapes the facility and doesn't really have anywhere to go so she just Picks Somewhere. She ends up escaping to a city and climbing through a random window post-carnage and meeting Zach. A random fucking English major who can't really do anything about this massive murder woman who is now in his place.
Her entire thing is that she's learning what it means to be human while dealing with A: trauma and PTSD from Everything and B: a government desperate trying to get her back. Big Woman enjoyers who want someone severely emotionally stunted and permanently stressed out but trying her best may like her. Also she's bisexual and her blood is BRIGHT pink.
Lorraine is a chieftess of a sky island that floats over The Abyss, governing it with her two brothers. She basically oversees the safety of the villages and makes sure people are fed and tended to. Things have been getting hard though, as the island keeps crumbling little by little, and the island seems to have been falling apart faster after Lorraine's father died and she took over. She ends up getting betrayed by one of her brother's and challenges to a duel because he blames her for things sucking really bad + he's jealouuuuussss.
Lorraine loses the duel and gets stabbed through the gut with the family spear ( which has lightning magic fun fact ) and physically KICKED over the side of the island by her brother. She falls and falls and falls, spear STILL INSIDE HER, and she falls into The Abyss, which is like. An infinitely stretching void way below the island. If you fall over the edge, you aren't coming back.
But Lorraine falls into The Abyss. And wakes up. In a fucked up new world that is mangled and twisted and decaying. She gets attacked by some [creatures I haven't named yet ValleyStalkers idk] and manages to fight them off with her spear, but just barely. She faints bc of blood loss + exhaustion + lightning magic. But THEN. PLOT TWIST BITCH SHE JUST DRAGGED INTO A LITTLE ROCK SHELTER BY A LITTLE GIRL. PEOPLE CAN LIVE DOWN HERE.
Lorraine gets nursed back to health by this young girl and Lorraine is hellbent on clawing her way back up to the island and slaughtering her brother for his betrayal. And she adopts the girl and sets off on a journey to leave The Abyss. Also she's like in her 40's-50's and is a cool trans woman with a wife. For my woman enjoyers who like a stern and commanding lady who is also very sweet and sacrificial. Also who has a kickass lightning spear passed through her family's lineage.
Lorraine's lore document is collecting dust as we speak but I'd like to finalize some lore of the worldbuilding + Abyss, as well as OTHER CHARACTERS WHO AREN'T MENTIONED BC THE STORY NEEDS DEVELOPED. Jonah doesn't have a lore document yet bc I'm. Lazy.
Thumbs up!! This is like. The general overview of them. My beautiful amazing battle women.

Brief Look at Judge Dredd Novels, Cinematic Interlude: Judge Dredd (1995)
Tumblr media
We should, perhaps, begin with the obvious.
The biggest problem here is Sylvester Stallone, in manners both gross and subtle. On the one hand, his performance is... well, it's pure Stallone. It's a mind-gratingly stoic and staid performance, with all the mumbling you've come to expect, and on the most obvious of levels it's simply not very good.
But the deeper problem here, and the one that really sinks the film, is one that fandom generally seems to come very close to correctly diagnosing, if only to ever so slightly miss the mark in the way that only science-fiction fandoms really can.
The problem, as John J. Fandom, MD would have you believe, is that the film chose to show Judge Dredd's face, one of the biggest no-nos of 2000 AD. And they are, at least, partially right, but only in the sense that the prominence of Stallone's face is a symptom of the overwhelming amount of distortion that the actor's mere presence inflicts upon the very cinematic grammar of the film.
Witness the first scene in which Dredd is revealed, and you can practically hear the creaks as the generally satirical and sceptical lens in which 2000 AD cast the Judges at its best moments is wrenched into a far more conventional "action movie" template.
This impression certainly isn't helped any by the eventual arrival of Rob Schneider, who was seemingly one of your go-to guys in the nineties for lame action movie buddy comedies.
(Granted, the only other film I've seen from the decade that fits the bill would be Tsui Hark's 1998 JCVD vehicle Knock Off, a rather terrible film that I only ever bothered to watch because Sparks did the theme song. At any rate, it simply wasn't worth it.)
It's not that the juxtaposition of Judge Dredd against this conventional setting couldn't create a perverse frisson, but it would definitely require a much more incisive and self-aware script than William Wisher, Jr. and Steven de Souza were apparently willing to provide. As is, you're left with... well, a conventional action movie, which is probably in the Top 2 Least Interesting Things You Could Ever Do With Judge Dredd.
The other, as it happens, would be to make it a conventional sci-fi film riffing on Star Wars and Joseph Campbell, and oops they did that one too, complete with a James Earl Jones voiceover that makes a point of having him say lines about "forces." The best encapsulation of the sheer strangeness of this experience is the scene in which Max von Sydow's Fargo reveals to Dredd his nature as a clone. After seemingly never shutting up throughout the whole film, Rob Schneider is practically forced to the periphery of the frame for an Atonement with the Father or whatever.
Rather than being as liberating as one would hope "getting less Rob Schneider" would be, it only reinforces the sense that the film is caught between two - three, if you count the tone and aesthetic of the original 2000 AD comics, but all impressions of the film's behind-the-scenes would seem to suggest that you'd be the only one - competing sensibilities, and ultimately ends up doing neither of them particularly well.
Sure, it looks good, with some wonderful set design and special effects, but the reduction of such an interesting world as Judge Dredd down to superficial and facile pleasures - and I include in this remark the utterly extraneous catfight between Diane Lane's Hershey and a rightfully bored Joan Chen, for the record - can't help but sting a little. The biggest saving grace the film has is that it isn't that long, but at that point we'd best stop scraping the bottom of the barrel before we end up with splinters.
And accordingly, we should end with the obvious: The fact that this made nearly nineteen times as much as the contemporary Tank Girl film is the kind of thing that it's hard not to view as anything but a moral abhorrence.

Uh no, I strongly disagree. I’m not American, not straight, not white, not a guy. I’m a queer Indian woman from the global South, a 5th generation South African. I had TWO brown great grandfathers serve in WWII under their colonial overlords. I have a double major in political science and history. I also have many straight white guy friends who love reading about or watching things about WWII.
Some other things worth thinking about: boys are indoctrinated into viewing history through the lens of war. In my home city the best and oldest schools are still separated by gender. Boys got taught military history, and missed out on cultural history, and it was vice versa for the girls. Feminism? Counterculture? They didn’t know her. They were writing tests about Napoleon’s military decisions. They knew what a phalanx was, even though they’d never see one, and it was less relevant to their lives than learning about the anti-war moment. They didn’t get to choose, boys schools taught war, so war they learnt.
WWII involved America as a major player, and it’s a country that for a long time held a monopoly on English language global entertainment through Hollywood. As the excellent comic linked earlier points out, war stories provided narratives of good and evil, but more importantly, of the value of even one man’s actions. Yes, the cost to that man was terrible. The damage was sometimes debilitating, but at least the stakes of WWII were high enough to justify it. The modern person is trapped in systems of incremental exploitation, our moral obligations don’t seem to matter, and we are rewarded for not distinguishing ourselves. We don’t really have a great frame of reference for the existential struggles of our time: climate change; corporate greed, inequity, technological advancement. Of course the stories offered up about WWII would give us something we’re missing: simplicity, agency, righteousness.
Even if you cared more for documentary than fiction: WWII was a war we could see. It was frightfully well documented. We could hear veterans talk, we could watch video footage, and at least in the 1990s when we were growing up, it was clear who the bad guys were. People underestimate the power of the first truly visible war. Or a war where everyone wanted the aggressor to lose (we don’t even have that now, with the current land war in Europe). I’m sure if we had video of the pyramids going up, or of ancient trepanning, or of Mongol invaders, they’d also attract many viewers. But we don’t have that. We have the audio visuals for one recent global war, so that’s what people engage with.
Because WWII was so vast, and so many fought, and so many different places became theatres of war, interest in the war is widespread. It’s not just straight white guys who care. Apartheid South Africa was split: Nazi spies, Nazi sympathisers among the Afrikaners, meanwhile the parts of the territory still under British colonial rule were sending people of all races to fight on the other side. Many places in the world, this war touched diverse populations of people, and they all have their stories.
Part of the obsessive focus on the tools of war: the bombs, the tanks, the subs, the planes, radar, computing, encryption, spies and intelligence, right down to rations, is because many, many people have considered a life where the Allied powers didn’t win. And those technological leaps forward that modern war gave us, may have turned the tide, lent an edge in a key battle, and changed life for generations of people to come, including us. They have genuine meaning; they helped secure wins that may have literally changed the face of the world. I don’t think people only care about the tools of war in isolation. I think people have done a decent job of understanding why those tools mattered to the outcome of the war.
Every history buff friend of mine thinks war is horrible. Wants a future without it. Thinks WWI AND WWII were tragic moments in our collective history. They also know that WWII changed how the world would work for 50 years or more. We still operate within a political system we largely inherited from WWII. Actually, I wish more people could understand this, could see the long-reaching effects all around them.
If you aren’t interested in WWII especially, I struggle to imagine how you frame global politics, global inequity, institutions, rights and democracy now. Because it’s all so heavily influenced by the war, by the aftermath of that one war in particular. So no, I don’t think interest in WWII is limited to stories of American exceptionalism. I don’t think only straight, white men care about it, but I can understand why they do. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to care about the tools of war. I wish more people where I live would spend some time understanding how these wars may still be affecting the lives they live.
why are straight white guys so obsessed with world war 2

Sitting on the sidelines, she watched the Firstborn Followers of the Fallen hand out pamphlets. Her eyesight noted how their eyes held no real life, and only dark malice. Possessed walking the streets and acting like Jehovah Witness'. This isn't good. VERY BAD! Saoirse crept along the edge of the alley, her eyes firm on the men as they disappeared into a strange temple. Opening her phone she snapped a picture, the strange bladed cross of Adriel sat atop it. "These fucks just moved into my home, is anyone dealing with them?" --- SPOILERS AHEAD! YES, Warrior Nun Season 2 came out and I binged it like the basic thirsty bitch I AM! Please note, I have a lot of solid criticism for this series and a lot of love for it. Please be aware, this TV Series is a strict departure from the kind of hypersexualized work of Ben Dunn, "Warrior Nun Areala". In that world, the Halo doesn't exist in the same way that the Nun in question (Shannon) is a reincarnation of the original Nun, Areala. In this story, Arela is a former pagan Valkyrie comes to serve the church. There's a lot more magick and devils in this story and not as much multiplanar science. First, I want to say that as we enter this season, Ava was her usual irritating self. I mean the girl was basically abused and killed for being disable as an orphan. Remember, she was treated as completely useless and was poisoned to death via an overdose. So when she got the Halo she went hogwild with all the power and ability to you know -walk.-. By now she's still being her reckless self, and starts to actually mature. The breakout of this particular season to me were Beatric, Superion and Camila. Yeah, when we finally get Yasmine into the mix I like how we have a Coptic Nun (who decided to drop a few drags on the British Colonization of Egypt) join the crew. The Ugly Adriel is one of the MOST abhorrently plot armor-filled villain I've seen since I watched WIthout a Trace. Seriously, that godkin should have been killed so many times and the fact he could figure shit out was just stupid. Near the end we got a good example of his power, but honestly these fights felt more like needless tension raising rather than threats. This is where seeing him doing more than offhanded plagues would have been kind of great. As you know, maybe a scene where he stares down a tank, or I dunno ends a war. Like seriously, I mean I get the catholic influences in this show. But there is far too much plot armor propping up the Firstborn, especially with how they treated Lillith. Oh, gods don't get me started on FUCKING LILLITH! Second, Lillith literally murders an entire crowd of the Firstborn fucks and then turns to the man later on. She breaks away after hearing of Mary's death and just -gives- up? Like I get that her mother is shitty and that we're trying to tie her to the demon in the comics (who is a villain daughter of the OG Lillith), but wasted arc. Seeing her as more of a neutral party rather than a simp for Adriel would have been awesome. Since she was already a pretty solid anti-heroine backstory since Season 1. So basically, the story here is just kind of filled with a lot of stakes and at times needless extension. Adriel spends most of the time being a fucking mouthpiece of his own rhetoric and his followers are mooks. The few who reveal themselves at the Conclave was nice touch. Finally, god Miguel was kind of cool, but he was basically a bomb sent by a god. That was his story, sure he introduce the anti-Adriel resistance, but his entire arc was just kind of blah. The Good Fuck, Beatrice is filled with such fucking useless lesbian energy. The entire build up is done in such a way, that I was honestly angry with Ava a lot. But, honestly, Ava is nice to have as a bi/pan figure as well. I had a lot of gay thoughts popping away, but I like Avatrice as a couple. Yeah, in the original season it seemed there was more chemistry with Mary. How she appeared to love Shannon though build up this relationship which seems to coalesce out of the Halo-Bearers with their sisters. Now, there is something to be said for how well acted Beatrice as a big sister is to Camila. What we see here though is the need to protect and care for someone in a supporting and romantic manner. Mary and Beatrice have a strong bond with the Warrior Nun. As Warrior Sisters they stand as a sort of right-hand and as a defender. Yes, the Halo Bearer's have vast supernatural powers, but they need someone to watch their back. This is made even more evident as it was Beatrice in Season 1 who conducted Ava's training. Being together in isolation after the awakening of Adriel and the bombing at the Vatican likely increased their dependence on one another. Her frustration and how she expresses it with Miguel's appearance and joining the team was well acted. Hell, I was so fucking happy when they kissed by the end! The End This series is not nearly as bad as Cursed, which was a -very fucking bad- fantasy series. One that had a bit of potential which ended up wasted! Because, we can't have Arthurian stuff that is kind of okay these days! Now that said, the CGI in this series is still pretty janky. Like, I feel like if Shadow & Bone or even Witcher can get an upgraded so can Warrior Nun. Now this was a series I wasn't sure was going to get renewed. I watched it when Summer 2020 came before I made my big watch of the first Saga's of One Piece. So when I saw a new season I was pleasantly surprised. I do find it really funny that netflix seems intent on placating the Queers with tossing us a bone of a few solid LGBT filled series. While still supporting trash human beings like I dunno, David Chapelle? Who the fuck knows in this case. I was happy to watch this series, and when Adriel was torn apart all I could say was "Took way too damn long!" Hottakes: I watched this series at the end of a long day and in between assistance my sibling with her baby. Plus, I had my teeth drilled because of a cavity so I was pretty damn high as balls. I spent more time analyzing the series and think it over the night after I watched it. So sadly unlike the rest of my reviews I don't have any really hottakes for this one. I will say I want to see some good fics using this verse for you know, better writing!

I once created a character like this. He was a polish exorcist born in the early 11th century who got possessed by a demon. He has managed to keep the thing from taking control of his body for the most part, but because it is a fallen Seraphim he has not been able to exorcise it completely. The demon wants to send him to hell, but the exorcist has proven surprisingly virtuous, so on death he would end up going to heaven instead. Failing it's original goal, the demon instead decided to try the next best thing: perpetually keeping him from going to heaven.
in other words, the demon won't let him die. any time the exorcist loses consciousness for even a second, the demon taken control and immediately repairs any damage inflicted. If a nearby target stands to destroy the exorcist beyond the demons ability to heal, he begins altering the exorcist's body and defends him himself. he figures if he waits long enough, the exorcist will eventually fall into darkness of some sort or another. then he will simply withdraw his "help". the demon also has a passive effect when active, which causes people to hallucinate like a really bad acid trip, which he does mostly to mess with people but it CAN scare some enemies away. looks something like this (credit to Hyun's Dojo):
Tumblr media
by the way, he still ages normally, though he will never get cancer or alzheimers or anything else that might result in his death. he does get A LOT of back pain, though, and when his brain is damaged sometimes he loses important memories. also when the demon awakens, a glowing blue eye opens in his forehead.
it's been a bit over 1000 years. over this time, the exorcist has taken up his role as a wandering knight errant, righting wrongs and defending the innocent from both supernatural and all-too-human threats. he of course is an exorcist, and can banish or at least harm most demons easily enough, and he has a sword with a relic of Saint Benedict of Nursia which allows him to strike intangible creatures like ghosts. He joined the knights hospitaller and learned medical techniques from an arab physician during the crusades. He's mastered numerous fighting styles, such as the now-extinct style La Destreza, allowing him to dodge most attacks while barely moving a muscle (and thus preventing situations that would release the demon). looks something like this:
Tumblr media
bullets he can usually just tank outright, since as stated before he can't die, but anything which damages his brain or would cause him to go into shock releases the demon, and he tries his best to prevent that even though it makes him more powerful. he's... a very poor shot, so he has to rely on his skill with the blade instead.
the comic series was supposed to take place during World War II. The exorcist was in Berlin in 1938 during Kristallnacht, and a number of his friends in the city were brutally murdered. While he tried to put up a fight, he ended up getting shot in the leg while protecting a child, and the demon refused to heal it until everything had settled and he was left alone, resulting in the child dying before his eyes. now he's on a crusade of vengeance to track down and kill the nazis who killed his friends and liberate concentration camps. an old man with a sword taking on one of the most brutal and evil regimes in history.
of course, the demon has been working to turn this crusade into something much darker and indiscriminate, and if he succeeds in turning his fight for justice into a slaughter driven by revenge, the exorcist will meet an untimely end.
he is joined in his fight by a teenage girl he managed to rescue in a disastrously failed raid on the Birkenau concentration camp, who was experimented on and turned into a prototype super-soldier against her will. everyone else he tried to save in the raid died, so since then they have been trying their best to hit smaller camps like Stuthoff. The girl has super-strength, fast reflexes, enhanced senses, and is a terrific shot with a pistol.
lurking behind the scenes is an ancient sorcerer by the name of Johann Georg Faust, who has been lending mystical support to the reich from behind the scenes in a bid to acquire yet more power. he has an army of demons at his disposal, and uses them so sew hate and terror whenever possible. the two are destined to clash eventually.
I never got around to making the comic, unfortunately.
(edit: the first gif only seems to work if you click it. dunno why)
immortality through not being incapable of death but by coming back to life after you die no matter what is such a cool power like it’s just so fucking metal. you can rip me apart if you want, i’ll rise from my own viscera and all you’ll have done is piss me off

WHB’s Ever-Growing List of Comic Recommendations
I am SICK and TIRED of people saying they’re not into comics!!! You could be!!! You just read a Captain America comic one time and realised it kinda sucked!!!! It probably did!!!!!! There’s other comics!!!!!!!!!
In fact I am intentionally NOT going to include DC or Marvel in this list because there’s so fuckin many of them dude. That’s gonna be a different list entirely.
Anyway I’m gonna break this up into segments as best I can and hope I remember all the amazing works I’ve read over the years. This is also only a light sprinkling of things I’ve read that I think are good starting points. If you ejoyed something and want more like it, or are more interested in one type of comic than another, I’ll happily give you more options.
If you’d like any info about how/where to read these comics just DM me and I’ll happily answer any questions.
Western Industry-Published Comics:
Tank Girl - I fucking love Tank Girl. I have a HUGE collection of Tank Girl comics. 1, 2 and 3 have NOT aged well, but Tank Girl was very much a symbol of counter-culture and was used as an icon for protests against Section 28 and the Thatcher regime. Crass, violent, scruffy and extremely punk. The upside is, you can pick just ONE TG title and read only that. She’s been passed around a few different publication companies and been handled by a variety of writers, so the themes and values of the comics are quite broad. My personal favourite is Visions of Booga.
The Ballad of Halo Jones (cancelled) - oh my GODD this COMIC. A 2000 AD genstone. The tragedy of Halo Jones is that the comics got cancelled due to a dispute with her creators and the company. Alan Moore at his absolute finest, creating the most elaborate sci-fi world with really great characters. Every day I morn that only 3 of 9 volumes were ever made.
Saga (ongoing) - o, um, you’re NOT reading Saga? cringe... Jokes aside, Saga published by Image Comics is fantastic. This immense space fantasy follows an inter-species family escaping the war that separates their people. The art is great, the characters are wonderful, the world building is fantastic, it’s so, so immersive. Sex, drugs, and violence abound. An epic space-opera for adult readers. Dude, c’mon, just read it smh
The Pride - This started small and indie but was picked up by Dark Horse. Joe Glass’ response to the lack of representation in Marvel and DC comics. A superhero series where all the characters are out-and-proud queer and fight against queerphobia and oppression, with very blunt explorations of hate crime, AIDS, and inter-community issues. Loveable characters and great art.
Scott Pilgrim VS The World - YEAH I’LL DO IT, I’LL REC SCOTT PILGRIM. I genuinely loved these comics as a teenager, they felt so cool and funny and fresh and dynamic. They were everything I wanted my life to be. Ultimate geeky dorky comic.
Jem and the Holograms - you remember that cartoon? well the comics go hard. VERY cool rock sci-fi, great new takes on the characters, queer as hell, very fun. definitely aimed at bringing more Jem content to fans who have grown up and want something a little more intense.
Persepolis - I’ve only just started reading this. It’s a memoir of the cultural shift in Iran and it’s very real and down-to-earth. Incidentally this is a Banned Book, so obviously that is why I recommend you read it. Incidentally quite a few comics about politics and identity have been banned around the world, so I suggest finding a list of them and reading through all of them as soon as you can.
World of Warcraft: Deathknight - not gonna dress this one up. it’s the manga about Koltira and Thassarian. I legit think the WoW lore comics and books are good. I want these two to kiss.
.
Japanese Manga:
Death Note - oh my god. dude. just read it. or watch it. i don’t care. this is a cultural ICON. this blew my MIND. the character tensions and dynamics, the long-term planning and payoff, the plot twists, the characters, it’s amazing.
Full Metal Alchemist - this should go without saying. i don’t think either anime really successfully adapted the manga. a very in-depth war-time fantasy with brilliant characters, so many plotlines and complex socio-political issues, a huge cast of different types of characters. It has the RANGE.
Uzumaki - I generally recommend Junji Itou’s work anyway, and tend to prefer his shorter stuff, but this particular horror series is so iconic and has some incredible artwork and imagery that just stays with you forever. Personally not a huge fan of the ending but it is very his style.
Shaman King - this aged both very badly and very well, somehow. the mix of traditional shaman practices from around the world, as well as the use of mythology and folk tales to pad out this urban fantasy, is very engaging and interesting. The characters are all from very different walks of life and it’s so easy to get attached to them. the anime adaptions didn’t quite capture the sheer intensity of this story and while it very much is a shonen, it has so much else going for it that really makes it such a unique gem of a series.
Black Butler (ongoing) - oh my god PLEASE read Black Butler. don’t bother with the anime. ignore that. you THINK this is gonna be a fanservicey series about fancy boys and demons but it’s NOT. it’s about TRAUMA and CORRUPTION and SECRET SOCETIES and PLOTS and it is getting better and better and better with each chapter. the artwork is gorgeous and the characters went from archetypes to really complex and fleshed out with individual backstories and I love them all dearly. this series has made me cry.
Saint Young Men (ongoing) - Jesus and Buddha are roommates in modern-day Japan. It’s a very fun and easy slice-of-life that takes a teasing but respectful angle on the two faiths and is just so wholesome. Was a big meme a few years ago.
The Way of the House Husband (ongoing) - you’ve seen this manga about. an ex-Yakuza becomes a house-husband to a working wife who loves magical girl anime. Slice-of-life with some of the most intense artwork and hilarious dynamics.
Skull Faced Book Seller Honda-San - a non-fiction account of a bookseller and the various customers they encounter. Very funny and truthful and easy to read.
The Two Of Them Are Pretty Much Like This (ongoing) - Slice-of-life lesbian romance with an age gap. The two must carefully balance their professional and private life, and navigate where they can and can’t be open about their relationship.
Yokohama Kaidashi Kikō  /  Quiet Country Café - scifi future post-environmental-apocalypse slice-of-life about an android who runs a café and the various people she meets and the strange world around her. Perfect for fans of Ghibli films.
.
Independent Comics
Emily Is Burning - Honestly I rec most of Steph Seed’s work, her limited use of dialogue and impressionistic-style artwork lends itself so well to the weird horror stories she creates
NPC Tea (ongoing) - urban fantasy story about D&D type characters who run a tea shop, but must also deal with a dangerous power that threatens to destroy everything.
The Miracles - from the same creator as The Pride, this is another superhero story that focuses more on alternate universes, coming of ages, secrets and deception.
.
WebToons and Web Comics:
Homestuck - fuck you. yeah im recommending Homestuck. it’s GOOD okay? it’s innovative and complex and deep and hilarious and weird and imaginative and it’s everything. there’s a BUNCH of lets-reads online to make it easier for you and loads of dubs and helpful guides to navigate it. It’s fucking good okay. shut up.
Ava’s Demon (ongoing) - gorgeous art, really cool space fantasy, loveable chaacters, animated sequences, I could go on. It’s a slow, slow update because of the sheer quality of the artwork that goes into it.
Lackadaisy (ongoing) - another absolute banger of artwork and detail. set in probation era about an underground bar, the goofy and eccentric characters get in violent fights, tangle with the law, and get up to be questionable and extremely illegal hijinks to keep their bar going as the business starts to wane. Updates are on hold while the creators work on an ACTUAL ANIMATED MOVIE for it.
Heartstopper (ongoing)- YEAH IM GAY. WHAT OF IT. I LOVE this gushy, mushy, sweet little comic about theseschool boys in love!!! This is a webcomic but has been officially published into paper books. The show is lovely and captures it well but the series is much further on than the show is. I genuinely hope it’s making life of queer teens easier!!! Because god damn it was bad when I was growing up!!!!
Mage and the Demon Queen (ongoing) - beautiful WebToon set in an RPG style fantasy world where a young mage falls in love with the enemy of her people, Demon Queen Velverosa. Adventure romance with a lot more happening than it first lets on.
Carciphona - Very elaborate and stunning fantasy series about magic, war, uprisings and mysterious backstories. Engaging character dynamics and intrigue throughout. The spin-off slice-of-life romance series Amongst Us is also worth a read.
Ruby Quest - you are not ready for this. Using the characters of Animal Crossing and an incredibly simplistic artstyle, this sci-fi horror used reader-input choices to navigate the world and storyline. A mix of rpg-style reading, animated panels and single-panel storytelling create immense amounts of tension and clever use of detail in the right places adds to the horror element. It’s spiritual successor, Nan Quest, is also very recommended.

An essay nobody asked for incoming.
So, I've watched a few of those "who would win? Kuvira in her prime and Toph in her prime" and I need to get this out of my system.
Toph wins in every category and scenario unless Kuvira somehow manages to break all of Toph's limbs simultaneously.
Raw strength:
Toph has been shown to have superhuman raw strength. This little 12 year old girl moved whole palace staircases by herself, destroyed tanks by herself, she could produce giant earth walls, avalanches and in general move giant amounts of earth with precision. She held a whole factory from collapsing while she was in a cave underneath it (comics). SHE HELD THE WEIGHT OF THE WHOLE OF WAN SHI TONG'S LIBRARY BY HERSELF. And she did that while being grounded in sand which she hadn't mastered by then so the terrain was to her disadvantage. In other words, she held a multi ton building by herself by pushing her hands into only the tower of it, countering the force of a fucking spirit vortex.
Abilities:
Toph has seismic sense, which clearly gives her an advantage. I do not know if Kuvira does too but even if she does, even Toph's daughters have to first remove the bottom of their shoes, stomp the ground and then focus to properly use it while Toph could literally be standing on her toes and "see". She can feel something as small as an ant from quite a distance and could sense Azula, Mai and Ty Lee on their very fast light-footed lizards from miles away. She has also been shown to feel and be able to bend earth and metal that she isn't directly in contact with.
Toph invented metal bending. Everything that is known about it comes directly from her. Kuvira may be a prodigy but Toph is the OG.
Toph took down whole fire nation air ships metal bending. While Kuvira has agility and percision, I don't think she matches Toph here.
Technique:
Toph was a master earth bender by the age of fucking 12 having learned to bend from the original masters. She held her own against Bumi, a master and a member of the White Lotus who had 100 years more than her to master his skill. "Oh, but Bumi wasn't trying to hurt her". What makes you think that Bumi, who was ready to drop half an arena worth of earth on his childhood best friend who wasn't an earth bender, would hesitate to try directing half a mountain on someone who he knew was a master earth bender themselves.
Adaptability and fighting style:
The only category where Kuvira has the upper hand is speed and the fact that she can see. But speed comes at a price of burning out. Kuvira is dependent on her own body to move while Toph uses the earth to move her saving energy. She could easily counter Kuvira's attacks for a long time and tire her out to then strike a few precise shots that would take Kuvira down.
Kuvira may be fast and precise but she isn't too tactical. She doesn't wait for the right moment. She just attacks. Much like Korra. Kuvira did hold her own against Korra but Korra wasn't at her full strength then and Korra may be a powerhouse but she also isn't tactical or patient. She depends on brute force. While Toph is insanely strong she is also tactical and patient. She listens, she adapts and strikes at the right moment.
Since we're at adaptability, not only did Toph invent and master metal bending. She had one bad encounter with sand and in the span of a few months managed to perfect her sandbending to a degree where she could make a copy of Ba Sing Se from sand in exact detail. She learns and adapts exceptionally fast.
Toph's fighting style was even back in her day different from the other earth benders. Kuvira probably has not encountered such a fighting style which, again, gives Toph the upper hand.
And finally, the circumstances in which they've developed their skills:
Kuvira is an excellent bender and fighter. And I know she was an orphan and probably had to learn to defend herself early on. But take this in account. Kuvira, after being adopted by Suyin, grew up in one of the safest cities in the world during a time of peace. Most of her fighting, presumably, was training, and most of it probably earth benders and the fights that weren't training, she didn't face master benders and benders who were actively trying to murder her. Toph grew up in a time of war. Forcing her to face all types of benders, even the Avatar himself and most of the time it was trained fire nation soldiers with world domination and murder on their mind.
Kuvira fights to prove a point, Toph fought to survive. That is a big difference in regard to determination and knowledge when it comes to fighting.
Hell, even in her 80+ year old my-back-is-killing-me days, I still think Toph would win. People seem to conveniently forget that beside maybe Sokka, Toph is the proudest, most stubborn son of a bitch to ever live. If provoked enough, she'd pull a Bumi, straighten her own back, point at Kuvira and say "Heard you were talking shit" and everybody, including Kuvira, would shit their pants seeing that a monster has just been awakened.
Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk
