Thinking about it, I wonder how much the reason it seems like people're willing to accept unethical production for the sake of low prices is because we don't really know what goes into the price of things.

Because like... did you know that Games Workshop does all its factory production in the UK instead of offshoring it to the Global South like other companies might? And that's good, a rare GW dub!

But also, we have no idea whether that's responsible for their bloated prices compared to other companies, as opposed to shareholders and executives wanting more cocaine money.

And that's the problem.

Like, to add, I bitch about Transformers Deluxes costing 25$ now, but that would be perfectly fine if it were what was necessary for the folks on the design teams and in the factories to make a living wage!

But again, I have no idea whether it's that, or because Hasbro execs want to buy a third Golden Sex Yacht (The Yacht You Can Have Sex With) (C) (TM).

IDK where I'm going with this, it's just depressingly interesting wrt the issues of imperialist exploitation and the global supply chain...

Wood Engraving Wednesday

THÉO SCHMIED

The French painter and illustrator Pierre Brissaud (1885-1964) was commissioned to produce watercolor illustrations for the 1950 Limited Edition Club (LEC) production of Gustave Flaubert's Madame Bovary. The watercolors were turned over to the workshop of master French wood engraver Théo Schmied (1900-1985) to be reproduced for the edition as these remarkable, multi-block color wood engravings.

Schmied's Swiss-born father François-Louis Schmied (1873-1941), also a wood engraver and formally trained in the book arts, established his Paris workshop in 1910 to produce deluxe, illustrated limited editions. Théo Schmied took over the management of his father's workshop beginning in 1924 and inherited the business after his father's death.

This edition was designed by Francis Meynell of the Nonesuch Press in London, with the text composed in Monotype Ehrhardt at the Curwen Press under the supervision of Ernest Ingham and printed letterpress at the Marchbanks Press in New York on specially-made paper bearing the title of the book as watermark by the Curtis Paper Company of Newark, Delaware. The edition is limited to 1500 copies signed by Pierre Brissaud.

I had a good good great evening my momy made her deluxe insanity caesar salad with fishwife anchovies i brought back from the states and the most insane amount of parmesan. and then we had more of my pear panettone bread pudding and watched motherland and tried to locate various countries on a map and realised we are not good at geography. I have not cried because I am excited to be a woman of the world again and I know I can call my family always to say Hi got any album recs! but i will miss my routine at home and my parents cooking and my brother leaving tuna all over the countertops and my cat throwing herself at walls. and ill miss everything feeling familiar and mine. But I am excited to read in new places and attend american poetry workshops and see real snow for the first time since I was a kid

I wasn‘t even aware that there was a Deep Rock Galactic Boardgame, but it‘s very cool to see how you‘re painting the Minis!

Thank you so much! There most certainly is, and the Kickstarter for the expansions just started delivering the boxes. It's quite fun! In addition to the whole DRG theme, it's a solid co-op dungeon crawler with huge variety in the maps, monsters, and missions. The spacerig expansion even introduces dynamic campaign (Assignments) generation with upgrades and resources carried over between missions.

The deluxe version with the plastic minis is a little pricey, but it does have 49 minis just in the base game, which will still be cheaper than buying 49 Warhammer minus to paint. If you want more info, the DRG discord has a channel for it - And if you want to try before you buy, Tabletop Simulator has a copy of it on the workshop! Either way, good luck and Rock and Stone!

See, this is why I always get a little confused when people ask if they can download the deck we used. Aside from the obvious "we don't have permission to distribute other people's workshop uploads", it's like... slapping that shit together with your friends is part of the fun.

I’ve been workshopping the Underworld Friends AU more, and have decided the group is going to be wandering through a section of Hades based on their combined experiences in life. Which is to say... that, the first ‘world’ might be based on Cookie Country, Patched Plains, and Fine Fields combined.

But something else that’s going to be influenced by their memories and the respective games they come from is some of the enemies they’ll fight over the course of their journey. These enemies-- who will be guarding pieces of the collectibles the group is aiming to gather, will be based on the bosses of the games said characters debuted in. 

Some of these won’t be too interesting. Yeah, yeah-- whatever... fighting Whispy Woods again for the fiftieth time. But a few of the bosses from Triple Deluxe, Planet Robobot, and Return to Dreamland are... peculiar.

These bosses happen to be characters that Magolor, Haltmann and Sectonia knew on a personal level. And that means the encounters with them will be much more interesting. 

A Taranza based on Sectonia’s memories of the person who got fed up with her and helped kill her... a Susie based on the traitorous secretary who Haltmann still doesn’t know the motives of... a Landia ridden by the four heroes Magolor still perceives as resenting him...

What sort of fight will they put up? And what sort of realizations will they force our characters to come to about the sort of people they are?

Either way, seems our group isn’t going to be having a fun time.

Thinking about.... a Motorcity au, where similar to Mike, Rinzler first worked as a high leader under Kane, doing his damndest to wife out the Burners and get back at Mike for abandoning them for such an awful cause.

But, when Mike and the team are caught completely by surprise by Rinzler when he shows up in Old Detroit, he gets a sort of Christmas Carol show around about the lie he was living in Deluxe Detroit & instantly switches side, determined to make things right and fight for the right side.

& on one lonesome walk around Old Detroit, Rinzler stops dead in his tracks as he finds a young man fixing a radio controlled toy for a few kids while they're watching him, as patiently as single digit kids can manage.

After a bit, he returns the helicopter-bladed car to the kids and watches them with a huge grin on his face when they charge it up, and the thing flies and drives like never before.

Rinzler can't help himself but approach the stranger and compliments his fast handiwork. He introduces himself and Flint clocks him immediately for being a Deluxe runaway after nodding to Rinzler's all too perfectly clean white boots he had yet to get rid of.

Not having anything else to do at the moment, Rinzler jumps at the chance whrn Flint asks him to join for a cup of strong coffee, all while Flint led Rinzler to his workshop, where he had a number of old-old-old computers and had been trying diligently to hack into Deluxes safety nets, so he could help Kane down a level or two, his own way.

Intrigued, the two start working together and make their own partnership, to tag team work with the Burners, and for Flint to help Rinzler adjust to this brand new old world lol

aaa thank you! a quick summary of their concept (spoilers for the HSS propogation quests and Penacony storyline!):

Ruan Mei pushing against the boundaries of genetic engineering again, practicing her work at DNA replication and gene synthesis before perfecting it fully to continue her project with Tazzyronth. She teams with one Dr. Veritas Ratio in workshopping a method of short-term life forms that would age rapidly, to study the process of decay and growth in order to tweak it in later tests down the line.

The life forms in question? intelligent organisms born from meshing genetic sequences from material donated (or subtly stolen in some way). The test subjects are cultivated, given a strict curriculum, an extensive wealth of online and archived knowledge to learn from and test their talents. TLDR: we made fankid love children from characters in HSR.

- take Aventurine’s knack for convoluted machinations and Ratio’s intense drive towards a singular goal: Goldberg Slot Machine!

- A workaholic mechanic with a talent for both the hardware and software of their projects, dabbles in abstract inventions

- Don’t tell them about transhumanism there will be no going back

GAIUS RATIO: ( Ratio // Ruan Mei )

- This kid’s defining, persistent curiosity stems from both parents. Combine it with Ruan Mei’s connections to the organic, with Ratio’s more clinical perspectives of logic into a physical sense: faux flora, paper flowers, and a wistful wanderlust

- They want to see the world outside their ivory tower of academia, and to learn first hand about the universe itself. Excitedly dogs the poor scientists handling everyone’s monitored exams to reply to Gaius’ questions for once- “A test! Answer me!”

- The Little Prince in a tower, having read all the books they own ten times over

- Gaius and Cavae are technically siblings, sharing Dr. Ratio as a donor! they treat each other as such and use nicknames for one another (GaiGai and CaeCae respectively)

“APOLLYON”: ( Dan Feng // Yingxing )

- Not much information is disclosed about this subject’s donors. Nothing Ruan Mei could properly obtain from the Xianshou Ten-Lords Commission, at least. Perhaps Apollyon’s dogged determination to both learn everything about their ‘parents’, as well as defy whatever assumptions are made about themselves, are traits passed down altogether

- Very big fan of the legal system. The orderly process of a court trial is appealing to them. They’ve also thrown themselves into the law to subvert Dan Feng and Yingxing/Blade’s history of criminal notoriety

- Technically the oldest, but not the *eldest*. Because of their Vidyahara genetics, he still has a baby face (gets teased for it). The subjects all still age faster than normal though

“BELPHAGOR”: (J▪️n▪️ ▪️▪️an // ▪️▪️▪️▪️ ▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️▪️)

- If Apollyon’s donor information is hard to uncover, then Belphagor’s is buried under centuries of incryption, perhaps never even being added to the databank in the first place. Or— out of the spirit of secrecy disguised as easy transparency— the info was scrubbed some time after being inputted

- Calm, collected, with connections throughout the Herta Space Station and beyond. Belphie even has routine ‘storyboarding’ sessions with Madame Herta and her Genius coworkers. Their secret contributions to the flavor text of the Simulated Universe help weave the story into a cohesive narrative, tricks the AI into believing the fabrication more easily

- Also has game nights with a slippery hacker online. They trade the #1 spot for the universal high score of Puyo Puyo Tetris III Deluxe Online (sponsored by the IPC’s entertainment branch)

“MATEO” : ( Boothill // Argenti )

- Mateo has a fair amount of information about his donors. No matter how many files he can access to read about them, though, he still craves a true connection. He doesn’t just want donors— he wants parents. Maybe that Curio he swiped from Herta’s collection could be his ticket off the station?

- Headstrong, steadfast, impatient, and honest. Desperately wants to prove himself through acts of valor and impulse snap decisions to help others. His heart’s in the right place

- the Curio he swiped? turns into a biplane. when not in flight mode? turns into a JETPACKKKKKKK YEAAHH BABY

MISC. INFO: ( Bullshit // Braindump)

- Mateo and Gaius first met each other while Mateo was testing his Curio’s jetpack function outside the HSS. Gaius saw him through the window, enthusiastically wrote notes on big slats of paper to communicate, and they were stuck by the hip ever since

- Cavae has a habit of self-isolation and social withdrawal when having emotional struggles. They drown themselves in their inventions without any time to bond with the others. The other kids have tried to reach through to them, Gaius and Apollyon especially, but the only progress made is when Cavae does it themselves

- Apollyon loves to put on mock trials. Belphagor and Gaius, the most skilled writers in the group, often create theater performances or fake court trials for Apollyon to play the Prosecutor for. Cavae contributed the props and stage tech, with Gaius and Mateo playing as secondary roles. Mateo often gets put as the Judge so he can have a fake beard (but he puts on the best show as the convict)

- Gaius is skilled at origami

- Belphagor is on the most amicable terms with Ruan Mei. Mostly because, out of all the subjects, they’re the one most willing to *accept* being a test subject. Thus they hold no hard feelings towards Ruan Mei about the experiment they’re born from

- Ratio has a check-up scheduled to interview his subjects coming up. The reminder got sent in the mail, though a particularly nosy merchant may have rummaged through his deliveries while the good Doc was running a bath.
