Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes
My favourite part of this film is seeing the loss of history and culture of Caesars original tribe. Proximus already corrupted Caesar's words to justify his imperialist genocidal empire. Caesar's religious followers where the only apes who could read and write in english have now gone extinct. The last intellegent humans live in isolation of the apes, leading that ancient knowledge to be left unread by future apes. Raka only managed to give Noa and incredibally simplified and barebones account of who Caesar was and what he stood for. Noa who is being built up as the new caesar as both the protaganist and leader of the apes, ends the film rejecting the idea of coexistence between humans and apes. Essentially the same lessons that Caesar, Maurice, Rocket, Bad ape, and Bright Eyes learned have been destoryed. Will the next generation of apes in the new movies go towards a path of peace? Or will they continue the legacy of Koba, Woody Harrellson, and Proximus? allowing the same mistakes to be made over again?

No More Orphans In Zombieland (Zombieland: Double Tap, 2019)
No More Orphans In Zombieland (Zombieland: Double Tap, 2019)
So, I loved 2009’s Zombieland. I found it largely a clever and hilarious take on Zombie movies with a terrific cast.  Amazon tried to do a series based on the film, recasting the characters with lesser known performers and a rather blah pilot episode.  I eventually gave up on the idea of ever getting a sequel…and then last year, on the heels of director Ruben Fleisher’s successful but critically…

Random ask: I’d like to see a stronger return of evil-for-evil’s sake villains in films. I appreciate deeply written, complex, or gray villains; but, sometimes I’d like more villains to come out and blow up a monument because “fuck you, I just want to blow shit up.” Ain’t deep, I know. Still, it would be fun.
It really would only be fun if we had the right actors doing the right roles. Honestly, if things play out, Carnage is gonna be that sort of villain in Venom 2. You got Woody Harrellson in the role, can’t go wrong with that!
I actually can’t think of any other good examples off the top of my head aside form Heath Ledger’s Joker. And Mark Hamill’s Joker. And Jack Nicholson’s Joker. Basically almost every iteration of Joker.

so i went to see the solo star wars movie, and i gotta say i liked it waaaayyyyy better than the last jedi, the force awakens even. the story was fine and it was mindless entertainment for 2 hours, i didnt think it was as bad as people are saying. the dude playin han was... fine. just did not care or really want to see woody harrellson in the movie and they inflated his character to the point where it was just kind of a little too much at the end. the big reveal at the end was spoiled for me online so there was no good kind of shock there. but all in all, it was fine. i could def see myself watching it again. unlike the last jedi which i doubt i will.

Anon who was asking; I did like The Shape Of Water... but not quite as much as I'd expected. I think I'd over-hyped it to myself. I was expecting something utterly magical and I just didn't get that from it. But it was excellent. Loved the acting, loved the hyper-stylised '60s setting, loved how repulsive Michael Shannon was...
I also watched Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri - now THAT lived up to the hype!! Martin McDonagh is hit-or-miss for me, but this was spot on. It's so rare to be constantly surprised by a film these days. Frances McDormand is something else in this film, and Sam Rockwell. The only "off" thing for me was Abbie Cornish's casting as Woody Harrellson's wife. Like, she's more than 20 years younger than him ffs...
I really loved The Post as well. Such a smart script. Now *there's* a movie for our times...

THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI - A REVIEW
After a long weekend of drinking I can sometimes end up feeling a bit gloomy. So it was probably a mistake to choose to watch Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri on Sunday evening. As such my thoughts and feelings on the film are probably slightly skewed. A fan of Martin McDonagh’s previous films (In Bruges and Seven Psychopaths) I was expecting a darkly comic knock-about romp. Three Billboards is no such film. (Despite Sam Rockwell playing it all the way through as though it is). The film has a sombre, downbeat tone with small sprinklings of (very) dark humour that occasionally feel out of place in a film that revolves around rape, murder and police brutality.
Frustrated with the local police department after they fail to catch her daughter’s rapist and murderer, Mildred Hayes (Frances McDormand) pays for three billboards to be put up on the edge of the town to shame the Sheriff (Woody Harrellson) and his colleagues (Sam Rockwell, et al.)
Tumblr media
Sharp, brimming with anger and, most importantly of all, it keeps its sense of realism and real life. It has been accused by some of being politically incorrect - immoral characters don’t get their comeuppance, lessons aren’t learned, people have glaring faults and make irrational or senseless decisions. Well, if this sort of stuff annoys you then you’re living in a fantasy utopia. This is real, this is what happens. This is how people are. Small town America is still racist and homophobic and insular. These towns are built on resentment, bitterness and hate. This is a morally ugly and ‘grey’ tale.
The main joy of the film is watching Frances McDormand as an unstoppable force. Here she is badass. An individual waging a one-woman war against a whole town despite tragedy and pain.
Tumblr media
Anyone who’s familiar with McDormand or Rockwell’s work will get the shtick, they’re good here, impressive even, but it’s what they’ve been doing for decades. Rockwell is essentially just playing Rockwell. He’s great at it, obviously, but it doesn’t feel like a great stretch for him. The same could be said for McDormand. Though if they both walk away with golden statues it will be merited.
There’s a lot to appreciate in Three Billboards, and it’s deservedly winning awards all over the place (Oscar glory is surely next). Having said that, it’s not a film that I can wholeheartedly recommend. It overstays its welcome a little and left me feeling morose afterwards. Even though it kept me entertained throughout, I’m not sure what the point was or what I really got out of it. I began watching it feeling glum and two hours later I only felt worse. But that may just be me.
