students !   it is time for our first land destination of the fall semester. exciting !  the ss university will be docking in seattle, united states of america, at 1:00pm est, monday, september 20th. situated on the west coast is the port city of seattle, the most populous city in the pacific northwest. the city has a rich native american history. it was later industrialized during the 18th century. it is now a technology hub famous for its progressive culture, caffeinated population, and deep relationship with the water ( and rain. )

WOODINVILLE, WA—July 19, 2018—Each year, in the aftermath of the previous year’s western wildfires, nature erupts with an overflowing bounty of wild morel mushrooms. And each summer, many of the men and women who are called upon to combat these fire are injured, disabled, or die in the line of duty.

Foods in Season, one of America’s largest purveyors of wild-harvested food, wrestled with the moral dilemma of these “burn morels.”  One person’s disaster had become another’s gain. They therefore launched #moralmorels and have challenged restaurants to partner with them to raise $100,000 to help fallen firefighters. Foods in Season gives each partner free burn morels and the restaurant, in turn, uses the mushrooms to raise funds for the Wildland Wildfire Fighters Foundation, a 501(c)3 charity.

This year, The Herbfarm restaurant in Woodinville partnered with Foods in Season and Dreadnaught Brewing of Monroe, Washington, to brew an unusual micro-batch of just 144 bottles of a beer using these real wildfire mushrooms. The beer, called “Red Mule”,  is a hybrid Irish red and Scotch ale. The mushrooms add an almost-imperceptible earthy umami flavor. The ale was also brewed with fresh spruce tips to give it the aroma of a forest morning. The beer is available at The Herbfarm for a $25 contribution per bottle. For those who don’t drink, the restaurant has also created a few sealed, keepsake bottles without the beer inside for a $20 donation. The Herbfarm is donating 100 percent of the sales to the Wildland Wildfire Fighters Foundation. Dinner reservations not required to purchase the beer.
