OK! I can actually answer that! I am currently doing a paramedicine degree with a whole class on just birth!
So basically, your pelvis is a bone, but it’s actually got a joint in the middle as seen here, right in the pubic arch
It’s called the pubic symphysis, and one of its jobs is to help the pelvis expand and make room for the baby to come out (if you’re pregnant it also just helps with movement and shit) Occasionally is gets a bit fucked up, like any joint, becoming dislocated. That’s where we get things like SPD.
There’s also a bunch of ligaments (fibrous tissue that attaches bones to more bones) that also stretch the pelvis too.
Sometimes the baby is stuck, and if its shoulder dystocia (shoulder stuck on the pubic bone) we can help put the pregnant person is various positions (knees to chest (McRobert’s position) or running start position to name a couple), our we can put pressure on the pubic suprapubic pressure (press on the pubic bone) to move the pelvis around and dislodge the shoulder). This is highly effective in fixing the issue and it’s rare they you’ll need to do an invasive internal manoeuvre like the woodscrew manoeuvre to get the baby out.
I’m throwing this in too to really drive home how different pelvises are. Female pelvises are so much wider than male pelvises (using gendered language to distinguish the bones here). If we use the scenario of the female pelvis has to give birth, of course it’s wider and more open, it’s gotta fit a baby through it! The male pelvis is a lot narrower and closed up, because they haven’t evolved to birth babies.
It kinda shows as well why female pelvises need to stretch, the baby will need to get out and even though the gap is big the baby has shoulders and arms and a head to get out and they’re pretty big. So pelvises gotta make room! Look at this diagram. That baby is huge and you have to get it out of a tiny gap, and that’s if it’s coming out the right way!
Read up on pelvises guys
the thing is like. i get that it's scary and makes people who do desire to get pregnant uncomfortable when we talk about the brutality and violence of pregnancy and the damage that pregnancy can do to your body
but you deserve to give informed consent to that process.
the lies around pregnancy - that it's inherently safe, that it doesn't do you permanent damage, that it's only extremely rare for people to die of pregnancy complications, etc like
all of these are lies constructed so that more people will get pregnant w/o knowing all that
there needs to be more talk about the impact of miscarriages and how common they are, how different abortion processes are and how accessible they are
but also like. talking about how pregnancy fucks your body up should not be taboo
this is a process that permanently changes most people's bodies, and that's even if the pregnancy doesn't do them like. severe illness or injury
and i just think everybody should have a right to KNOW that
bc to live in a society that intentionally obscures and hides facts about a completely optional and dangerous process does so for a reason, and that reason is based in a very sinister ideology that does not value bodily autonomy or informed consent

Under couch storage for wide, flat stuff.
We have a bunch of difficult to access stuff under this couch. It was unacceptable.
Boom, pull out storage.
The main board is 9 mm plyboard. I prioritised keeping the space and weight over strength. the whole thing is held together with wood screws because I am very lazy efficient.
I found this handle on a drawer someone had dumped on the street. It was damaged, one of the spacers had snapped off the bar. I drilled a hole in the bar, inserted a dowel and then used a woodscrew inside the spacer to hold them together. It's a pretty wimpy screw, so we'll see how it holds up to repeated use. A small nut and bolt with a conical washer on the inside of the bar would probably work.
Scavenged skateboard wheels for the front. I used M8 bolts for a replacement axle and tried to jam some new grease into the crappy bearings. A small stack of washers space it out from the frame of the box. The rear (single) wheel is a fixed castor from a set of drawers that was being chucked out.
It'd be good to be able to fine-tune the height, if I'd made the height of the skateboard wheels more adjustable, but that seemed hard so I went for the lazy efficient option.
I wanted the main board to be in decent contact with the carpet so it didn't bow too much, and would be alright if someone careless stepped in the middle. It's been fine to step on, and pulls out alright.
The rear wheel is easy to move up and down for a little height adjustability but will ultimately be replaced by more skateboard wheels. This will allow a deeper recess from the edge of the couch.
The main board is 9 mm plyboard. I prioritised keeping the space and weight over strength. the whole thing is held together with wood screws because I am very lazy efficient.
The paint is furniture paint, hopefully it holds up.

Really want some T-Nuts because I've never used regular bolts or machine screws on wood before and that sounds way nicer than having to trawl through a bunch of shit woodscrews trying to find the perfect length-thickness balance. Especially when a short screw is called for, like 1/2".

If anyone is wanting to make themselves one of these, this is actually a REALLY EASY project, especially if you have a second person to help you. You need a drill and a saw; a handsaw will work but a power saw will make your life easier.
In terms of materials: You need a framed piece of art or a photo; ideally the frame should be wood or resin. Plastic or metal would be difficult. You need a piano hinge; whatever length is closest to the height of your painting. You need some wood screws, 1.5-2 inches long, and you need enough 1x4 board to go around the perimeter of the painting and then do a couple shelves in the middle. I used a hook and eye set to keep this closed. A speed square (to make sure your corners are correct) will also help.
All you're making is a box that's the same size or slightly smaller than the frame--this frame is 28 inches wide and 38 inches tall, so the box I made is 27x37. The shelves are just placed wherever I wanted them inside, and everything is just side-screwed in with woodscrews. I did pre-drill all the places I put screws, because cheap wood is prone to splitting. The I painted it, attached the piano hinge, and put the hook and eye in a spot that seemed easy to reach. I drilled holes (using a spade bit) so that I could get cords in and out. I mounted it to the wall using a french cleat, because I had wood left and I don't have good stud placements on this wall, and french cleats are good for distributing weight.
But really--the only skills you need for this are measuring, cutting boards, and putting screws in. Pretty doable!
This is a test to see if Tumblr is letting me post
#hellen highwater's house of horrors#I was planning to close this with magnetic cabinet latches but they were WEAK#so the hook and eye is working for now#i did this to this painting because this frame is an absolute piece of garbage#i got it free with an easel i was buying and it was literally falling apart#i fixed it a bit but if it died i would not be sad about it#this thing was doomed from day one

𝓢𝓬𝓻𝓮𝔀𝓼! I wanted to share this post, it is not sponsored or endorsed , just what i did, why i did it, and my own opinions! - Today i carried out a little repair to one of my garden gates, it had come under a bot of abuse from the kids and wind damage. - What was going to be a quick job refixing two of the pickets, turned into replacing all the screws! - Now i only threw these gates together and had no intention of them being used for years and years, but, i did use a very well known and used wood screw brand, And have to say i was suprised at how fast the screws had corroded in a relatively short period of time. - The screws i had used were gold in colour, wax coated and supposedly corrosion resistant, but a year later tells a different story. - Even though the screws were painted over, the rust had started to show through, so i chose to remove and replace them all with Reisser cutter screws, which are gold tropicalized, so i hope and assume these will perform better. - I like the cutter screws for their ability to ‘bite’ in, pull in smooth and fast & self countersink cleanly. I haven’t had one strip a head or snap yet. They come with two free PZ2 bits in the tub, but they will wear down before you will get through all the screws, but what do you want for free! The tubs (this one is 4.0x40mm 1200 pcs) are a good size, made of strong plastic and even have a screw measure on the lid! - I think screws can often be compromised in relation to profits, i have often come across jobs were i have tried to remove a screw and it had a stripped head, rusted out or snapped trying to remove it. Using right type of screw for the application whether it be size, coating or type, is important, i always bin the screws that come with things like brackets & equipment as more often than not they are just cheap fixings that are soft and will rust! - So that’s my opinion, what screws do you use? Does it matter to you? Have you had a nightmare with a screw?! @reisser_ltd #doscrewsmatter #screws #rightscrewfortherightjob #reisser #reisserscrews #reisserscrewsuk #woodscrews #timberscrews #opinions (at Cornwall) https://www.instagram.com/p/CABL5BADOaa/?igshid=n7sfipyux6z1

Yeah, sometimes you fabricate something by careful design and judicious use of appropriate tools, and sometimes you just make shit up.
Here's the mounting bracket I mentioned wanting to make earlier this evening. (Well, it's now 1:30am, but it feels weird saying "last night".) It's just a thin sheet of salvaged scrap aluminum, bent with some pliers into sort of a "b" shape, with the top of the "b" hanging over the top of the variable capacitor, and a hole through the middle for the shaft. The dial is fixed to it by the shown screw, and the bracket itself is held in place by its geometry — where it pushes against the other pieces — and a small woodscrew on the other side.
Tomorrow I will probably disassemble it, sand down edges, and give it a couple of coats of paint, but tonight it works great.
When your fingers aren't quite sensitive enough to turn the knob on a variable capacitor to distinguish between very close stations, it's nice to get some mechanical advantage.
The radio kit happened to be packaged with a few of these vernier dials. This one is marked as an S36 — and I'm not sure what exactly that means, but basically it's got gears inside that make it so it takes multiple turns of the dial to make the shaft cover its 180° of travel, giving increased precision.
Of course, it's very hard to use as is here — it's intended to be fastened down to a front panel to keep the dial in place as the knob and shaft move, and without that fastening, the whole thing has a tendency to spin. I think I just need to take some aluminum sheeting and bend it in a U around, fastening the bracket to the cap and the knob body to the bracket.
