Wombles of Wimbledon, that's my earworm today! Where does this come from? BTW, when I was small and not from London I'd never heard of Wimbledon Common. So I thought they were singing Wombles of Wimbledon, common are we, as in there are lots of us 😂😂

Meet the Wombles

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, a variety of shows were produced that focused on the adventures of a group of little creatures that lived just out of reach of human society. The Smurfs was the big hit, but there was also The Snorks, The Monchhichis, and many more. However, there was one TV show of this nature that completely passed us by, at least in the United States.

The Wombles was a TV series from the United Kingdom focusing on a group of short, furry creatures living in Wimbledon Common, a park in southwest London. It was based on a book series created by Elisabeth Beresford. The most important thing about them was their environmental cred, as they picked up the trash that humans left behind and turned it into all sorts of Rube Goldberg-esque contraptions. It was quite popular in the UK, so much so, in fact, that the Wombles ended up getting their own movie:

The most bizarre turn the Wombles took, however, was when they actually became a bubblegum band, complete with this little novelty hit:

Sadly, the Wombles were never really noticed much in too many places outside of the UK. It's sort of a shame, because the US has been sleeping on such a great thing.

Recently, there's been news that a remake is in the works, along with a potential movie. I do hope that another movie gets made, and it's by the guys who did the Paddington movies. I also hope they get Jim Henson's Creature Shop to work on it. All in all, it's a fascinating thing that should be known to the world.

‘Two of the most famous Christmas singles have been spliced together to create a new song.Wizzard's 1973 hit I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday and 1974's Wombling Merry Christmas have spawned a new song.I Wish It Could Be A Wombling Merry Christmas Everyday is the brainchild of Roy Wood, of Wizzard, and Mike Batt, the man behind the Wombles' Mike Batt, who has described the song as a "very silly record"."The old days of silly, holly, Wombley Christmas songs seem to be numbered. The problem with Christmas songs with holly on and mentioning Christmas is that radio stations won't play them until two weeks before Christmas. "We have taken the two songs and made the silliest song ever by juggling the two bits together.The Wombles was one of the most popular children's programmes of the 1970s and the furry creatures lived in a burrow on Wimbledon common. The programme spawned 10 hit singles with the theme tune to the programme, The Wombling Song, reaching number four in the charts in 1974. The Wombles' Christmas song reached number two in the same year. Wizzard also enjoyed a number four placing with its famous festive song, much played in pubs and shopping centres at Christmas.'

It's a reference to the 1969 hit book 'The Wombles', by Elizabeth Beresford; A novel about a group of animals that reside in Wimbledon Common (although they have burrows all over the world) and live by the motto "Make Good Use of Bad Rubbish, which later prompted multiple follow-up books and even a tv show.

I read a lot of The Wombles as a child, having an English father (although I didn't even know there was a tv show until much later) so they were an important part of my development. I also used the word 'womble' as part of my first ever email address so I think it's stuck with me through sentimentality.
