كان جيرارد تير بورش ( المعروف أيضاً بجيرارد تيربورج ) رساماً هولندياً مؤثراً ورائداً عاش فى العصر الذهبي الهولندي.

نرى فى عمل اليوم كيف تنظُر الشابة المُعتنى بها بطريقة مثالية بتساؤل إلى إمرأة أكبر سناً ترتدي ملابس داكنة. هل تلقت بعض الأخبار السيئة؟ شيئاً ما عن حبيبها؟ تعبيرات وجه السيدة واضحة للعيان فى المرآة أمامها وتبدو كأنها مصدومة. على الرغم من أني لا أعلم القصة المُصورة على اللوحة، أعلم أنهُ عادةً بالنسبة لفناني العصر الذهبي الهولندي على وجه العموم، فقد أشبع تير بورش المشهد بمعنى أعمق، لأن المرآة تُشير إلى التباهي وعابرية الحياة. الرسالة المنقولة هُنا هي أن الجمال والشباب سيتلاشان في نهاية المطاف.
