Blowing Smoke
A Jegulus song lyric one shot. I'm trying a new layout so lmk what you think! Guys this actually came to me like a fever dream.
wc: 1042 // @jegulus-microfic
Regulus isn't stupid. He sees it, all of it. He sees how she looks at James and how James looks back at her. It wasn't enough for him to have Regulus because you always chase the things you only get a taste of. This too, Regulus knows all too well. He stays hidden in the astronomy tower, behind tapestries, and alcoves in the dark. She can be loved out loud, in the common room, in the great hall, in the daylight. Today is the end day. Regulus plays the part of executioner and guilty both. He knows that to love something is to lose it too. That does not make this easier.
James crashes through the door of the tower, rumpled and blushing. He was always loud, always the centre of attention. His eyes land on Regulus, and just for a second, Regulus stills. He can't keep this, but god, how he wants to. Maybe he never even had it, but there's something there, just not worth playing second for. James carries that boyish smile, the one reserved only for Regulus, but it's too late. A sacrifice is only a sacrifice once the blood is drawn.
"Tell me, is she prettier than she was on the internet?" Regulus' face shifts into indifference. No preamble, no games. He is still a Black at the end of the day.
"Reg, what are you talking about?" James shifts uncomfortably. He knew this was coming. Not this soon though, he pleads, not right now.
"Are your conversations cool, like are you even interested?" Regulus stands, leaning against the railing of the tower. His arms sit crossed over his chest, less to be intimidating, and more to keep his heart where it should be. His tone is light, conversational almost.
"This is about Lily." James' voice is toneless, his eyes immediately dull. Not now. Not now.
"Who else, James, who else?"
In any other scenario, you just might have been able to convince Regulus he was wrong, that James was just trying to protect them both. Maybe he would've believed that a year of hiding was worth it, that kissing in cupboards and avoiding eye contact in the dinner hall was just the way it should be. But Regulus will not be an object of shame outside of his home, he won't drag that ignominy behind him when he doesn't have to.
"She's my friend." His eyes narrow. "I'm not going to avoid her just because she makes you insecure." James isn't an argumentative person. In fact, he's a talker, a placater, and so he can't quite figure out why defending Lily comes to him so easily.
"I know what you are, brighter than the stars." Now Regulus' voice is pure mockery, just so he can see how far James flinches. "Did you mean that then?"
"That was a private conversation. Who even told you about that?"
"I don't think me finding out is the issue here."
"She was upset, she's got so much going-"
"And me, James? How much have I got going on?" Now Regulus promised himself to stay put together, but this, this is his frailty. Too emotional, too expressive when it counts the least. "I'm your dirty little secret because Sirius wouldn't be able to handle sharing. I'm one wrong step away from my parents beating me half to death. So tell me."
"No."
"Tell me what the fuck is so awful in her life you just had to recycle the same line you used on me?"
James is quiet, chest heaving. He can feel curls sticking to the nape of his neck from sweat. How could he choose? How could Regulus make him. The silence was crackling like it was electrified. A blush crept up Regulus' cheeks. He looked younger in that moment, and something tugs at James' chest, but a callow face does not mean weakness.
"Tell me if she takes you far." And James knows exactly what Regulus means. Even through his derisive tone, Regulus had something that kept James grounded, something that kept him tethered. And he hates it.
"Far away from you." James is angry now, but he can't quite tell who it's at. "Far enough away from all the baggage you've been carrying." His head is a mess, and the only person who could help won't. Who the fuck does Regulus think he is? What the fuck has he done?
"My baggage? Oh, you're funny, Potter. Go on, run away again." Regulus' tone is harsh, derisive. "Up another hill to all the girls who'll help you bury it."
"Oh, fuck off Regulus. Back to surnames? Really? Can't we just talk?"
"About what? The lying? The running? The hiding? No, we can't fucking talk. Grow up."
"Baby Black, so insecure, so naive." James' words are trite to Regulus. "And the girls? What fucking girls? How could I when you're always just behind me?"
"Apparently that still didn't stop you." A flicker of hurt runs through Regulus, but he tamps it down.
"You know nothing about me. You don't understand. I have a reputation. Everyone thinks I'm single, and Lily's just there. What do you want me to do when I'm constantly pushed in her way?" James is bright red and the air is cloying. His head is buzzing, and he just wants it to stop. "Everyone expects me to be put together, to get the girl, to be cool and funny, and attractive. I thought you'd get it."
"They're just blowing smoke," Regulus smiles, except it's not a smile at all. "I'll say what they won't." It's a realisation. Regulus knows that despite everything, despite being James' dirty little secret, he still has one thing James doesn't.
James told Regulus the truth, everything. Every false laugh. Every tired smile. Every sleepless night.
And James knows it too.
"Reg, wait. Stop. Please." His hand reaches for Regulus, but he just misses, brushing the cuff of his jumper.
"I know everything they don't." Regulus' footsteps echo all the way down the stairs.
And for the first time in his life, James feels something bubbling up in his chest. A subtle burning that felt like agony.
For the first time in his life, James Potter couldn't have the thing he wanted most.

Prompt 8 - Unity
@jegulus-microfic August 8, Word count 842
Previous part First Wolfstar part
Regulus finally settled on a medium-sized boulder. He muttered spell after spell over the locket. Trying to think of a way to prove it was what he thought it was. The locket, though it had a clasp and a hinge, did not open, and no matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t get it open. A shadow fell over him as James Potter peered over his shoulder at the locket.
“You’re blocking my light,” Regulus said through gritted teeth.
“Not really,” James replied, perching too close beside him on his boulder. Regulus tried to stand, but James started talking before he could do more than tense his muscles.
“That was Slytherin’s locket, right?”
“Yes,” Regulus hissed as he gave up with magical means and bashed the priceless heirloom on the rock.
“Wait, wait!” James grabbed his wrists, encircling them with his fingers and stopping Regulus from hammering the locket. “Will you just hang on a second?!” James grunted as Regulus squirmed and shoved him. James toppled off the boulder, taking Regulus with him. They landed on the dusty ground with Regulus sprawled on top of James, his wrists still locked firmly in James’s hands.
“Are you happy now?” He spat, trying to right himself, but James just yanked his arms until they were face to face.
“Will you just listen? What was Salazar famous for?”
“Hating mudbloods?” Regulus deadpanned. James tightened his hands so tightly around Regulus’s wrists that he yelped in pain. “While you are around anyone that isn’t your precious Dark Lord or his little followers, you do not use that word. Do I make myself clear?” James growled. For the first time since he met James Potter, Regulus felt actual fear of the man. This was a side he’d never seen before, and he wasn’t sure he hated it.
“He’s not my precious anything.” He grumbled, turning his face away as best he could. Had everyone forgotten already that the Dark Lord had locked him away and staged his death so no one would look for him?
“Then stop spitting out his venomous words. Muggleborns are just as magical as us purebloods, some even more so.” James loosened his grip slightly while still keeping a firm hold. “And maybe stop calling him the Dark Lord, it makes it sound like you’re still a part of his little party. The wolves are getting antsy, they don’t like Voldemort. We need unity amongst us, or it won’t matter if you figure out how to defeat him, we won’t have the help we need to do it.” Regulus flinched. He didn’t like saying or hearing that name. “Anyway, as I was saying. What was he most famous for?” Regulus stilled as he thought for a second, letting James’s chest lift him up and down with his gentle breathing.
“He was a parselmouth,” Regulus whispered. James grinned at him.
“They all were. So perhaps their family heirloom is imbued with that magic.”
“And it won’t open unless we speak to it in the right language.” Regulus sat up excitedly and James gave him the slack to do so. “Salazar’s balls, I wish I still had access to the library in Grimmauld Place. I bet there are multiple books on the subject.” He stomped his foot into the dirt, causing a fine cloud of dust to puff up around it in his aggravation.
James sat up, making Regulus slide down his chest and into his lap. “You know, the Potters have the third-best library in wizarding Britain after the Blacks and the Malfoys?” James mused. Regulus perked up.
“You’d let me into your library?” His mind started going a mile a minute as he thought of all the things he would need to cross-reference and how little time he’d probably get in there.
“Sure, love, for as long as you need,” James grinned at him. Regulus smiled back, completely forgetting that James was still holding him prisoner and glossing over his use of love.
“Well, don’t you two look cosy?” Marcus snickered as he walked past, taking a huge bite out of an apple. Regulus twisted his wrists and this time James let go. He got to his feet and brushed off his trousers before he glared at the wolf.
“I thought you had pack business to attend to?” Regulus questioned. Marcus’s eyebrows rose up his head as a myriad of expressions crossed his face so swiftly that Regulus couldn’t pick them apart.
“If you think that when those two said ‘pack business’ and didn’t get that it was code for boinking in the forest, then you two are dumber than I thought you were,” Marcus guffawed as he went on his way. “Pack business, ha!” Regulus grit his teeth as he watched Marcus walk away, contemplating the many different hexes he was going to cast on his brother for disappearing and leaving him alone with James Bloody Potter. At least he’d got an invitation to the Potter library out of being manhandled and a new appreciation of being captured by James Potter's hands.

harrymort but harry has a gun. please. someone tell me I'm not the only one who has thought of this. I just feel like harry would be a very good mid-range handheld pistol (I think that's what I'm thinking of idk) user. like 1. it's hilarious to imagine Dumbledore being all vague and mysterious about a Very Important and Serious Weapon that he wants harry to learn how to use, and harry getting all nervous like "omg what niche magical artefact is he talking about" only for old dumbles to pull out a western-style very ornamental gun like "don't point it at anyone and only turn off the safety when you're in mortal danger. good luck" and running off, but ALSO because 2. it's hot and 3. I'm fairly certain it's very illegal in the UK which I find hilarious
bonus point I think harry using muggle weapons is really compelling because it challenges the idea that these wizards are inherently more powerful than muggles which is important to remind their society of if they have any intention of continuing on with the statue of secrecy
It would also be interesting to explore the nature of guns as a uniquely muggle creation that is still illegal in muggle britain as a sort of parallel to Harry's own struggles. Growing up in the muggle world and not feeling like he belongs anywhere because of his abusive family that isolated him from any potential support system he could have had, but still understanding that muggles are not evil as a whole is similar to the concept of guns being illegal in his muggle country even though the weapon itself isn't actively evil or wrong (idk if I phrased that well might edit this bit later today)
Continuing on with the parallels between my weapon of choice for harry and his own history, Harry was abruptly introduced to the wizarding world and had his entire understanding of the world flipped on its head, and went to hogwarts without any real explanation with what was happening and had to pick things up as he went. This theme could be very gracefully continued by having Dumbledore once again putting harry into a dangerous position by giving him a very deadly weapon without much instruction on how to use it nor any reasoning for why he is bestowing it upon harry. NOT in a dumbles bashing way tho, but rather in a "I have no idea how to use this thing, neither does anyone else in this school, but it is probably going to be your only chance of surviving in this war when no wizard expects it. here is the most surface level safety information, it is all I know, I hope this is the right choice" kind of way.
it also ties in well with harry's guerilla fighting style; he can conceal it with minimal effort, reach it easily, and use it quickly, all without relying on physical strength but rather on quick strategic thinking and swift movements.
plus like can you imagine Harry managing to get the upper hand on Voldemort by shooting one of his legs out from under him, immobilizing him, and taunting him by getting up close and threatening to finally dish out the finishing blow, only for voldemort to bite the barrel like "shoot me, I dare you" I think that would be really cool/hot in equal measures

Ron made a valiant effort to get up again but fell back with a whimper of pain. Lupin made toward him, looking concerned, but Ron gasped, “Get away from me, werewolf!” Lupin stopped dead. Then, with an obvious effort, he turned to Hermione and said, “How long have you known?”
“Dumbledore hired you when he knew you were a werewolf,” Ron gasped. “Is he mad?”
But Ron didn’t move. “What’s up?” said Harry, looking at him. Ron looked around at Harry, his expression very serious indeed. “Did you know?” he whispered. “About Hagrid being half-giant?” “No,” Harry said, shrugging. “So what?” He knew immediately, from the look Ron was giving him, that he was once again revealing his ignorance of the wizarding world.
“So?” Harry prompted Ron. “What’s the problem with giants?” “Well, they’re . . . they’re . . .” Ron struggled for words. “. . . not very nice,” he finished lamely. “Who cares?” Harry said. “There’s nothing wrong with Hagrid!” “I know there isn’t, but . . . blimey, no wonder he keeps it quiet,” Ron said, shaking his head. “I always thought he’d got in the way of a bad Engorgement Charm when he was a kid or something. Didn’t like to mention it. . . .” “But what’s it matter if his mother was a giantess?” said Harry. “Well . . . no one who knows him will care, ’cos they’ll know he’s not dangerous,” said Ron slowly. “But . . . Harry, they’re just vicious, giants. It’s like Hagrid said, it’s in their natures, they’re like trolls . . . they just like killing, everyone knows that. There aren’t any left in Britain now, though.”
Ron's grown up in the wizarding world, and with its prejudices. His automatic response is to believe in them and be horrified realizing people he likes and respects are creatures. But he overcomes this! We see in future books that Ron treats Lupin and Hagrid both just as he does everyone else, with just as much warmth and friendliness. And this isn't remarkable to us because the other two do the same. But Harry and Hermione don't have this stuff ingrained in them. They're free to form their own beliefs from knowing and liking Lupin and Hagrid. But Ron isn't. And still he unlearns these beliefs, for the sake of his friends, because it's the right thing to do.
And we see this with house-elves too! How he goes from entirely dismissing them to considering them more than Harry does. I've seen people bash Ron for how he treats Griphook in Book 7 'after everything', but not only does Griphook kind of prove him right, this is how he begins with all creatures because this is what he's taught, grown up with, basically indoctrinated with! And still he struggles against these and tries to be better and this is so, so important and incredibly brave.
And for Hermione, who values justice and compassion and bravery and equality, this is such a good fit! I genuinely don't understand how people can think Ron won't try to understand Hermione's perspectives due to her muggle upbringing or will force her to follow wizarding traditions and become a house-wife, when so much of his arc is about his personal flaws and prejudices and getting control over them. Weasley is our King!

New completed story as of Jan 2024!
The Goblet of Fire isn't a simple artefact – it possesses vast amounts of magic, a rudimentary sentience, and multiple sets of rules for past Triwizard Tournaments. The goblet gets aggravated by interfering wizards, throws out the rules, and takes steps to protect the underage contestant who is drafted into the contest.
There will be plenty of Dumbledore bashing, Weasley smashing, and Magical Britain crashing.

Aberforth Dumbledore is not only biased and mistaken, he is also a coward. May Albus strike me down for bashing his little brother, but by now he should be used to it.
Like Horace Slughorn, Aberforth had to practically be shamed by Harry into doing the right thing. Just because he eventually revealed he'd been concealing a hiding place for the persecuted students at Hogwarts doesn't mean he was doing much more than that. Harry looked at the mirror shard that Aberforth had part of at least twice before Aberforth sent Dobby to save him. Aberforth could have provided Harry with advice, reassurance, even warnings against his brother if he so chose, as early as chapter 2 of Deathly Hallows when Harry saw his eye in the mirror and thought it was Albus--but he did not.
Just because Aberforth has a much better sense of duty to his family doesn't make him a better man than Albus in the long run. Perhaps he was at age 14, but he spent most of the long years after Ariana's death being grumpy and being passive.
Aberforth only jumped in to tell Harry to run away at the eleventh hour, when Harry was confident he was close to destroying all of Voldemort's Horcruxes--when giving up would have been the most foolish.
Aberforth did not tell Harry to abandon the wizarding world and save himself because he cared about Harry as a person. He did it so he could deliver a last dig at his departed brother. The bitterness over Albus' mistakes was still festering over a century later, and Aberforth was willing to risk selling Wizarding Britain entirely to Voldemort if it meant he could poison Albus' image in just one more person's mind--even though the person he was speaking to was already extremely disillusioned about Albus by this point.
How on earth does one bitter trauma dump show that Aberforth, who should know damn well that Voldemort would follow Harry no matter where he ran, cares more than Harry about Albus, who dedicated his life to protecting Harry even after learning he was destined to die?
It doesn't. After all that ranting, Aberforth still ended up being schooled by a seventeen year-old boy about doing what's right in the face of what's easy.
not to be controversial on main but aberforth displayed more genuine concern for harry's wellbeing during a 15 minute interaction than dumbledore did in 15 years and that's the tea
#harry potter#aberforth dumbledore#albus dumbledore#dumbledore meta#my toxic trait is that I hate aberforth dumbledore with a passion#all the things albus did to redeem himself are things aberforth could have done instead of running an alcohol den and talking shit#harry and aberforth have an interesting dynamic but ONLY if it's acknowledged that harry has more maturity and insight than a centenarian#I have long said that the wrong dumbledore remained alive at the end of the series and I will KEEP saying it#albus couldn't save his sister and threw himself into trying to shield and save other children#aberforth couldn't save his sister and threw himself into... *checks notes* being a dickhead until the last section of the last book#every HP character has fascinating details and many have good points but I am HARD. Worldbuilding Exchange Letter
General Likes:
Worldbuilding and subject matter expertise! All the worldbuilding. I literally have 100K and counting of Chicago-cited, JSTOR articles and all, worldbuilding on the historical/political background of the wizarding world for the fic series I'm working on. I also adore small, lived-in details – so if there’s any particular expertise/personal experience that you’ve always wanted to expound on, consider me a captive audience haha. I’ve literally done method writing for a fic where I spent a morning walking around with four feet of yard-stick ruler strapped to my side to get an idea for what carrying a rapier would feel like.
Unconventional formats. Seriously, I'm game for whatever you can think of. Textbooks, epistolary, official memorandums, screenshots and text messages, newspaper articles – the world is your oyster here.
Nuanced moral ambiguity and loyalty and duty and responsibility and obligation and necessary evils. I absolutely adore portrayal of duties conflicting with personal desire, people having to make hard choices and then live with the consequences, bone-deep dedication to service, and anything else along those lines.
Character studies. Show me how a character became who they are, show me what facets of their personality emerges in different situations, tell me about how their background impacts how they view the world. Flawed/unreliable narration and close personal biases are absolutely welcome here. Outside perspectives on characters are always fun!
Close relationships, romantic and otherwise. I absolutely adore close platonic relationships that are no less close or meaningful or devoted for being platonic. I’m talking raze the fields, “Where you go, I go” level of loyalties being my catnip here. And even for romance, show me characters as friends first and how they relate to each other as people, more than the part where they think the other person’s hot.
DNWs:
Porn Without Plot/Plot, What Plot? I'm not entirely opposed to sex, either onscreen or implied, but only if it’s not the only thing happening. You’re writing for someone who’s largely disinterested in sex (except as a characterization tool) to begin with, so any attempt at smut for its own sake is going to fall flat.
Character bashing. Even the most objectively fucked up characters are still people, in all their good and evil. One-dimensional character bashing/flanderization will not be appreciated.
Crack. Humor and comedy are fine, crack is not. Life can be absolutely absurd sometimes, so if it’s something that could actually happen and fits the characters, go right ahead. Unhinged crack for its own sake will be less welcome.

British International Association
International Politics
Magical Governance
Fanfiction
In-universe Meta
Okay so what the fuck even is the British International Organization and what do they get up to? It's almost certainly an NGO/advocacy organization of some stripe, but Lily's described as "an information source" and Hermione is uneasy talking about the organization in any detail at Terminal M and describes several members as being in "delicate positions" with the sort of caginess that's more at home in a HUMINT handler than a high schooler. Who founded this organization, where does it get its money for shit like the legal fund or Bridge from (three guesses, almost all of them originate in Northern Virginia), what kind of games are they playing in Wizarding Britain pre-revolution, how do they relate to The Irish Question given the non-magical politics of the era, and how do they fare in a new world after the old regime's been toppled and everyone's trying to hammer out elections?
Outside perspectives of canon events from the eyes of basically anyone else! The sheer amounts of batshit chaos/international snarling during the Patagonia Match, how much American Government Maneuverings was going on behind the scenes during the revolution/Irish uprising/post-war elections, Mikael's Office Minions reactions to John's Warzone Runner, ICW proceedings during it all, the massive publicity blitz John endures after being hauled home, etc.
Magical Government Hijinks and the mundane Shit that arises when you have two governments uneasily more or less governing the same country (if not necessarily in population, then in geographical area, though even that gets complicated by magic). Anything from like what a TS-SCM brief of someone non-magical getting read in on magic might look like to Magical SCIF Construction Specs to Absolutely Corny Government Powerpoints/Posters (Polyjuice or Veritaserum version of Loose Lips Sink Ships) to Intense Interdepartmental Meetings to water cooler gossip/reaction/intelligence reports of any of the events of RevArc.

Magical Britain's Economy
Jewish Magical Tradition
In-Universe Meta
Give me all the magical Halakha! I am very much of the school of thought that the magical and non-magical world are closer together than they are apart, and particularly in terms of Jewish history, there's no way that if magic were real that we wouldn't have loads and loads of Talmud Tracts and rabbinical debates on the subject. So what does Maimonides vs Rambam vs Akiva have to say about magic on Shabbat? Are there Jewish methods of casting that don't involve a wand? How do kosher laws (or just Halakha In General, because there are a ton of non-human sapeint species running around) apply to magical creatures? Are there kosher for Passover potions? Are there magical kitniyot ingredients that Ashkenazi Jewish wizards consider foebidden during Passover but Mizrahi and Sephardic Jews feel totally fine chugging down? What are Jewish holidays like With Magic - can afikomen hide themselves, can Chanukah candles float, what does a magical Purim Spiel look like?
What the fuck is happening with the magical economy? There is absolutely no way that the goblins are The Only Magical Bank In The Entire World, so how does the financial system work? The wizarding economy can't be operating under a complete state of autarky just from the sheer lack of peasant farmers anywhere in the canon - so what's going on in terms of fiscal and monetary and trade policy? Are currencies fiat or backed with reserves of some sort? How do currency exchange rates work both between different international countries and a magical economy and its non-magical counterpart and is it a floating exchange rate or is shit pegged? What does magical trade look like? Percy canonically mentions regulations regarding cauldron thickness, what are some other considerations in terms of magical import/export? Are there trade barriers and internal dissent over globalization vs protectionism? Does Wizarding America hand out trade sanctions like candy the way that the US does in real life? What did the Columbia Exchange and Triangular Trade look like in the context of magic?
Fandom-specific DNW: justifying antisemitism/blood libel/gross stereotypes or antisemitic goblin caricatures. Gringotts and everything regarding goblin portrayal in canon makes me twitch. This is not strict DNW of goblins being mentioned, but be very fucking careful in the context of writing the wizarding economy and historical Jewish history regarding banking/finance. Do Not Fucking Go Near: magical blood libel, greedy goblin cabal secretly controlling the magical financial monopoly, a focus on describing goblins as hook-nosed or any other Jewish phenotypical stereotypes, portrayal of wizards as the poor humans being manipulated/tricked by those greedy ungrateful goblins and their rebellions.

Blood of Eden
Colony Life and Administration
Dominicus Empire Economics
Thanergetic Ecology
Cohort Protocols and Training
Warfare and Maneuver Warfare
In-Universe Meta
Fanfiction
Anyone who can actually write me cohesive maneuver warfare theory on how Cohort Warfare even works will have my undying gratitude. The Cohort is using swords (when in real life, swords were almost always sidearms rather than primary weapons) against adversaries that have firearms and artillery. The Blood of Eden memorandum at the back of Harrow the Ninth says that necromancers have a "death sense" that enable them to follow a thanergetic connection back to any Blood of Eden personnel that uses a sniper rifle to kill someone in their unit to a range of 3000 meters and use that connection to fuck the shooter up, and that necromancers have been seen restoring people back to full health from bullet wounds with relative ease, which is sort of an explanation, I guess. But my instinctive answer to this is boom-boom artillery, which in terms of the modern day easily has a range of 15-30 miles, and even in the World War II era, it was still easily in excess of a dozen miles. Sure, any mass fire with automatic weapons that doesn't immediately kill the necromancer might just be handing them a whole bunch of thanergy, but it's a bit hard to utilize thanergy when everyone, Cohort necromancers included, is a fine haze of red mist. Anyway, in terms of other topics covered, Isaac's insistence that the Forth House is not canon fodder but rather focused on recon and defensive warding has a ton of potential too - are they a light infantry/recon unit in the style of the Rangers who are tasked with laying the groundwork before an invasion in terms of intel and sabotage? No one gives teenagers a second glance, and covert/blending-in functions would go a long way toward explaining the extreme age of those kids given Actual Real Life Concrete Non-moral reasons why teenaged soldiers are inadvisable.
What exactly did John Gaius bring back during the Resurrection in terms of the flora/fauna? How has the ecology evolved over the last myriad, both within and outside the Nine House, and what impact has extreterrestrial wildlife had on the native Dominicus ecology? Coronabeth mentions that dueling the Sixth would be like "kicking a dog," so presumably domestic canines were not only resurrected at some point, but also hold a societal niche as companion animals (as opposed to, say, feral nuisances) to the point where kicking one is widely viewed as animal cruelty in terms of figures of speeches. When John tried to grow a bouquet during C- and N-'s wedding, the flowers had teeth - is this how dogs ended up with arboreal legs or is that a New Rho special that happens with the mutations after a planet's been flipped? Palamedes says at one point in Gideon the Ninth, "My whole House for a reliable food source," in the context of necromancers being glass cannons and their own worst enemy, which implies that there's Something Very Interesting Going On Here. Gideon's has absolutely no clue what fish is before arriving Canaan House, and I'm not sure we can take the Ninth House as representative of the entire Dominicus Ecosystem, situated as they are in the ass-end of the solar system, but what is the agricultural situation of the Nine Houses and shepherd planets? Are snow leeks just what they call some real life Earth variety of leeks that John renamed or are they an non-native crop from some other planet in the galaxy that turned out to grow well in Ninth soil? Are there protocols for soldiers returning home from the intergalactic front that they have to undergo quarantine/screening to ensure they're not risking introducing Space Kudzu into the Nine Houses?
On that note, what even is the economics of the Dominicus empire? It's brought up in As Yet Unsent that there are these life-long contracts signed with the King Undying and Ianthe references a contract signed 700 years ago in Nona the Ninth. Coronabeth is noted by Judith to complain about how inefficient the whole system is, so what is the system l? Who is manufacturing all the parts for space shuttles and weaponry and just back utensils and flimsy and silverware and clothes? Again, it's not like we've seen a lot of the Nine Houses, but there definitely wasn't industrial factories on the Ninth if they're making human soap by hand, but I don't really get an industrial vibe either from any of the other Houses? Palamedes' remark of "My whole House for a reliable food source" and Harrow's parents' difficulty in conceiving makes me wonder if crops and livestock yields within the Dominicus system aren't great either, and the whole thing is a mercantilist economy where shepherd planets do shit like manufacture spaceship components and literally most other life necessities.
How do refugee resettlements work? What are dynamics between Blood of Eden and refugees and interfactional disputes? Honestly, Joli the Teacher was one of my favorite side characters in Nona the Ninth because the world is going to hell and she's just trying so hard to give kids in the warzone and hell that I'd a refugee camp some normalcy and stability and an hour of science. Who is the one resettling all of these people? What is it like to know that you and your children and your grandchildren will have to wander forever? How does Blood of Eden or any other insurgent organizations use this to radicalize populations living on shepherd planets?

Ceren Culture and Religion
Nerian Politics
Nationalism and Identity in Neria
In-Universe Meta
Fanfiction
I loved the glimpses of Ceren religion that appeared throughout the trilogy, and the way that Gregory fell in love with these people and considered them worth fighting for. And holy fuck that scene of policemen ripping flower off a little girl's head because that's seen as a symbol of defiance/rebellion/treason that Gregory witnesses. I just want more everything of this. Andrea showing up would be a bonus, but I just really want anything about growing up as a persecuted religious minority, where something a small as flowers is viewed with suspicion and having to hide holiday celebration in cellars, the way the Ceren emphasis on blood is something that Andrea and her brothers (who aren't considered her brothers by Ceren society) chafes at. What was it like for Andrea and countless other Ceren children growing up in this world?
What does it mean to be Ceren, to identify as Ceren, in Neria, a hundred years after unification? Marie and Sebastian are Cerens as well, a different stripe (or at least Sebastian was, and Marie grew to be) of Ceren than Andrea and the rebels that we spend most of the series with, and at the very end of Traitor, there's a Ceren boy who's signed up to join the royal guard. How do all of these characters relate to their identity and religion and culture in similar and different ways? Do any of them identity as Nerian? Gregory says to Andrea, "It [Neria] is [a country]. The people—the ones who don’t meet in your cellar—they call themselves Nerians. Folk from Birnel and Panet live in the city, and they call it home, too. What are you going to do with them? You’re not the only ones who love this land, not anymore. Whatever Sasha’s great-grandfather did, a hundred years ago, this is how it is now." Is he right?
Gabrielle, my favorite and most determinedly ambitious twelve year-old. Marie firmly tells her, "This isn’t your fight. I’m not talking about fault, I’m not talking about power, and I’m not talking about keeping you safe. You’re going to spend your life trying to make a world you feel responsible for better. You’re going to fight for them. But you have to remember, Gabrielle. This isn’t your fight. It’s theirs. This isn't about you. You don’t want to apologize. You don’t really think you owe them. You want their forgiveness. That can’t be bought, love, and probably not ever even won. Some of the breaks are built into the foundations of us now. They live with them and you get to respect that." By the end of the book, she's tentatively making inroads with the Ceren resistance, and realized that she can love her father and simultaneously disagree with his policy, and is grappling with issues of privilege and saviorism and what she owes to her country and its people who have been wronged in her family's name and by her family. One of my favorite Gabrielle scenes is at the very end, when she's shocked to learn one of the royal guardsmen is a Ceren and "The guard stared at her, terrified, and Gabrielle leapt to reassure him, stumbling over her words and wringing her hands. There was a horror low in her stomach. What sort of kingdom was hers, that it hurt the very people who took up arms for it? That it hurt any person under its protection? This boy, in her own black and silver, was staring at her with such fear. Rage rose in her, at her forefathers, her father, at Bray and War and men like Doulings. I will be better. I will— Gabrielle took a long breath. I will listen. I will listen. I will learn." What does she get up to after the series ends? What are her stumbles, what are her successes? What is it like for this determined, too-smart kid who's committed to learning to listen.

Liam! He's a worldsinger, a talent that is explicitly noted to be rare and extraordinary in this world, for all that neither Jack or Laney call attention to it as such. "When [Laney] was eight, Liam was twenty and feeling trapped and useless." What made him leave the desert to go wandering? What was it like being able to hear the Elsewhere and whistle up magic? How did he he meet Jack and George for the first time and get into the Vigilante business and fighting the graves? I'd love for something where he doesn't die and Laney meets him and they actually get to have A Conversation because his departure really did a number on her.
Give me all the Mountain Vigilante stories. How did Jack and George meet for the first time, when did Jack realize the obisidan-eyed girl he told his name to at the tavern because he hadn't known who she was was Cassandra Graves, show me their logistical network and caches set up to smuggle mages to safety, how did Bea root herself in a bakery and meet this whistling desert boy and two kids trying to mend the world as best they can, how was Challenge founded and constructed and what was the Northern Rangers' reaction and cooperation with the vigilantes of the mountain?

Beta Sector Clan System
Beta Sector History
Chimera Wars
Fanfiction
In-Universe Meta
What exactly does the Beta Sector Clan System look like beyond what we've seen in the canon? The Draco Tell Dramis series offers a ton of interesting insight into Beta Sector and the Tell Clan and Tellon Blaze and the Military, and any details that expands on that would be lovely.
Jarra contacting her parents and learning that they wanted a relationship with her only for them to be killed in action weeks later is such a cruel twist of fate. Like, an entirely realistic twist of fate, mind you, because Life Sucks Like That and Jarra’s Life Especially Consists Of Cruel Twists Of Fate. I get the plot necessity of it, but still, I’ll take all the canon-divergences here. AU where Jaxon comes to his senses even a few days sooner and Jarra is never handed over to Hospital Earth and grows up with both parents, secure in the knowledge that she’s Loved And Is A Tell Clan Member, where Jarra contacts her clan at fourteen like her classmates did. She has no fucking clue why she does it (possibly Isette badgered her into it), she’s entirely doing it to make her friends happy, she fully expects things to go down in flames and figures she might as well get it over it. Except, to her complete shock, her family actually wants her. Her parents come down, there’s probably Much Yelling at Hospital Earth, and teenaged Jarra gets bombarded with all the love, where her parents don’t die during that behavior event in Kappa Sector and all the emotion fraughtness as she figures out What It Means To Have Parents And Family as an adult. Seriously, re-reading Earth Girl and Jarra’s (justified) bitterness is so painful after the Drago series because you know that her family wanted her so badly and they loved her so fucking much. What is the Tell Clan like? What does the political upheaval in Beta Sector look like in a context where the Tell Clan is hell-bent on welcoming Jarra as a clan member before she's famous for discovering the alien artifact? What happens to Jaxon's Legal Proceedings?
What was the Second Roman Empire like? Draco talks about how it was a nightmare for the Tell clans and other clans of the Military alliance, as they were torn between their identities as Betans and their oaths as Military officers, and there's a super interesting mention during Sol 2871 that the Tell Clan member who died regaining control of the Artemis solar array had been in deep dishonor and was posthumously cleared under Fidelis rules regarding great acts of mitigation. What happened there?
Also, what is Fidelis? There are strongly implied to be literal lawyers specializing in the intricacies of Fidelis, which is clearly a complex code that's canoncialou "the beating heart of Beta Sector." How does it work? Is it a civil code that's explicitly legislated? Or does it more closely resemble common law that grows out of precedents set by...differing clan councils?
Tellon Blaze and the Chimera Wars! That dude leaves such a long shadow on The Military to the point that even 250 years later, His Original Chair is still held in a place of honor in Military HQ. It's also all but outright stated in the Draco books that the Public Story Of Tellon Blaze and What Actually Happened are two very different narratives/closely held secrets - all of humanity views him as a war hero who was a military cadet visiting Thetis when shit hit the fan and heroically stepped up, but Draco talking to his father says that he was actually a civilian tennis-player with zero intentions of a military career. What's going on there? His order of "Nuke it to cinders" (and 'Let the stars go dark') is famous a quarter of a millennium later - what was that like, for Tellon Blaze. Anti-chimera detectors are on every military equipment and portal several centuries after the incident, and even the mere rumors of chimeras is enough to throw humanity into a panic, so what exactly went down during the wars (which are always mentioned in the plural).
On that note, the history/origin of the Honor Child tradition. It's mentioned at some point (I think in the Drago books) that that was a tradition that arose during the Chimera Wars due to the sheer number of dead - so what happened there?
Jarra Tell Morrath The First, along with her brother Draco Tell Dramis. These were two kids raised in this crazy cult/organization by Cioni's apprentices, who discovered their identities as Tell Clan members pounded on the doors of the Tell Clan Hall demanding entrance. It's implied that these two reacted very differently to their fucked-up upbringing: "My impression was that Draco was always fixated on the past but far too angry to discuss it, while his sister just wanted to focus on living a normal life in future. That seems consistent with what I was told about their clan welcoming ceremony. Draco was still changing his mind about his chosen name an hour before the ceremony, while his sister never once wavered from her decision to be Jarra Tell Morrath." What happened? Exactly why did Cioni's Apprentice want embryos of the Tell Clan? How did they escape? What was it like assimilating into a very different environment? What's Jarra's story of her military career and her eventual relationship with Bard and Riak?

Children of nephilim who left the Clave becoming Shadowhunters
Fanfiction
So canonically all children born to exiled Shadowhunters and Shadowhunters who have chosen to leave the Clave have a right to approach any Institute and request training, and the Clave approaches them every six years at ages 6, 12, and 18 asking if they would like to become a Shadowhunter. We see that play out during the Infernal Devices series, where Will (and later Cecily) left his family in Wales to become a Shadowhunter and there's...literally nothing his heartbroken parents can do about it, even when they knock at the Institute's doors begging for their son to come home. There's a lot more oversight over children between the Victorian era and the present day, so what might this look like in the modern day? I'm entirely down for slightly-predatory recruiting practices on the part of the Clave and all the family angst. The Clave could care less about anyone other than what they'd consider "untainted" children (or does this extend to grandchildren?? Shadowhunter blood is stated to be Dominant Unto Generations Into The Future, see the whole Kit Herondale thing), and they're going to have all the shiny brochures and pamphlets and telling kids how brave demon-fighters are, and insert all the Classic Recruiting Rhetoric.
(I don't really have a timeline preference for this. The post Dark War push for recruitment, especially since they reopened the Shadowhunter Academy, makes a ton of sense, but I'm equally fine with this taking place post Valentine's Circle Round 1. I just want this to be taking place in an era where, like, there are Agencies and Shit that notice when children disappear into thin air/parents can report a cult, and when most people would be horrified at the concept of twelve year-olds being trained to Fight Demons.)

Welcome to the First Wizarding War Fest!
This is an anonymous, prompt-based fest for fic and art featuring the First Wizarding War as significant to the work.
The setting of the fanwork can be anytime before October 31, 1981. It must be about the First Wizarding War in some way. This is your chance to explore topics such as factors that led to the war; characters fighting in the war; or how the war shaped society.
We would love to see works that explore how Voldemort came to power; how Severus and his friends became Death Eaters; or what shenanigans the Marauders came up with during their first battle.
We also welcome AUs that still focus on the first war. What if Harry time-traveled back to 1950? Would he stop Voldemort or fall in love with him? What if Harry time-traveled back to 1979 and helped Regulus find the locket? Hell, what if Lily Evans turned dark and teamed up with Bellatrix to take over Britain? The options are endless!
We encourage a wide range of ships and characters for this fest.
For more information, including rules and deadlines, see below the cut.
Timeline
Prompting opens: July 15, 2023 Prompting closes: August 4, 2023 Claiming begins: August 5, 2023 Claiming ends: October 8th, 2023 Work submission deadline: October 22, 2023 Posting begins: October 31, 2023 Creators revealed: TBD
Rules
This fest is open to all ages. If you are under 18 years old, please do not write explicit fics, nor read or comment on them.
Your submission must be complete and original to the fest. Previously posted works, works in progress, or sequels to existing works will not be accepted. We encourage the use of beta-readers and reserve the right to refuse a fic if there are too many SPaG (spelling, punctuation and grammar) errors.
All works will be hosted on Ao3, so you must have an Ao3 account to participate. Your work must comply with Ao3 terms of service. The mods will ensure that all works comply with the terms of service but will not otherwise make changes to art, text, or tags. The mods reserve the right to make other judgment calls on an as-needed basis to refuse a piece.
Canon compliant, time travel, and AU (canon divergence) fics are welcome. We also allow crossovers as long as they take place in the Harry Potter universe during the first wizarding war. Alternate settings such as coffee-shop AUs, or crossovers taking place in a different fandom's property, are not eligible. Ineligible topics would be, for example: the Marauders as students simply because the timeline is during the first war. For example, an eligible prompt would be about James, Sirius, Peter, and Remus deciding to join the Order of the Phoenix. An ineligible prompt would be the four of them pranking Slytherins in the Great Hall at breakfast. The mods reserve the right to delete prompts that do not appear to be about the First Wizarding War.
This fest is inclusive of many themes you personally may dislike. We will not tolerate bashing of ships or characters, or kink shaming. Please adhere to "don't like; don't read."
Artist Guidelines
Each art submission must be a stand-alone piece and exclusive to this fest.
Each submission must demonstrate approximately 2 hours worth of effort. Although this is an anon fest, you are welcome to include your personal watermark on the piece when it is uploaded to AO3 to prevent theft.
In addition to compliance with Ao3's terms of service, please do not submit explicit artwork depicting minors.
Author Guidelines
Each written submission must be a stand-alone piece and exclusive to this fest.
All written stories must be a minimum of 1,000 words with no maximum word count.
We strongly encourage that fics be beta read. The mods are more than happy to help find you a beta. Participants can also indicate if they are willing to beta for other participants in the sign up form.
Prompts
You will use airtable to submit your prompts; the link will be available when prompting opens. You may submit up to 20 prompts, as long as they fit the parameters of the fest.
All accepted prompts will be available to view on the airtable gallery (the link will be available when prompting opens). Anyone can submit a prompt; you will not be required to submit a claim in order to submit a prompt and vice versa.
You may submit prompts anonymously. By submitting a prompt under your ao3 name, you agree to receive either fic or art.
Claims
After prompting is over, there will be another airtable link to submit your claims.
Prompts are claimed on a first-come, first-served basis. You will receive an email confirming your prompt and your signup. If you finish writing your fic and wish to claim a second prompt, you are welcome to do so even after claiming closes. Before submitting a second claim form, please submit your first finished piece to the AO3 collection and wait for approval to claim another prompt.
Each prompt will be allowed 1 claim in each medium - Fic and Artwork.
You may, but are not required to, gift the work to the prompter. If you do not follow the prompt closely or do not adhere to the Do Not Want’s, consider self-prompting instead. If you would prefer not to have a fic gifted to you, consider prompting anonymously.
We also encourage you to participate in the fest community by leaving kudos and a kind comment on other participants' works!
Self Prompts
You can self-prompt on the claiming form after the prompting period ends. The mods will email you to either approve your prompt or let you know that it does not meet the criteria for the fest.
Drop Outs and Extensions
If you need to drop out at any time or request an extension, please contact the mods. Extensions will be at the mods’ discretion and dependent on the size of the fest. If you drop out without telling us, you will not be eligible to participate in next year’s fest.
Submissions and Posting
All artwork and written stories must be posted on AO3 to the First Wizarding War Fest collection by the deadline. You will not need to add the fest mod account as a co-author; we will inform you of the reveal date for your fic prior to posting, and you may change the publication date on the fic if you would like. However, if you would prefer us to update the date when we post, you may add the mod account (FirstWizardingWarFestMod). We will not make any other changes to your work.
When you post your work to the collection, also email us the following information:
Subject line: Ao3 username, fic or art, prompt # Title: Ao3 account: Prompt #: Ship or Gen: Rating: Wordcount/Art medium: Warnings: Summary: Link to work:
You may claim one additional prompt if you have posted your first fic to the collection and received approval from the mods.
Please note that the anonymous period remains in effect until the final masterlist is posted, and so please do not reveal yourself on any social media platform or discord server until reveals.
If you would like your work to remain anonymous even after fest reveals, please email the mods, and we will be happy to accommodate that.
Contact Us
You can contact the mods through the tumblr ask box, or at [email protected]. The mods are @maraudersaffair and @yletylyf. We hope you are as excited for this fest as we are!
