People continuing to not understand how child support works and trying to find anyway to paint single mothers receiving it as the villain is soooo headache inducing. There was one Reddit AITA story where the OP offhandedly mentioned that her mom had used her child support payments from her dad to repair the house they were living in (the post was about how her father was an emotional and mental deadbeat but did the financial bare minimum to keep from getting into legal trouble) and everybody totally ignored the contents of the post and zeroed in on that one comment. Lots of “Child support shouldn’t go towards your HOUSE or your CAR, it is for the KID only!!!!” and “You shouldn’t be mad at your dad for letting you starve, you should be mad at your mom for spending the child support money on [basic survival life upkeep].” If not for keeping a roof over a child’s head, what the fuck do you think child support is for? It’s supposed to reimburse the custodial parent for money they’ve spent on the child so what specifically they’re doing with that actual check is none of your business. But putting it towards home repairs is an extremely responsible decision and good parenting. Unlike mailing your kid $200 a month and patting yourself on the back about it.

I’m all for supporting women who are joyfully child-free and knew from a young age they just don’t want children and didn’t have them!

I just wish there was a little more recognition of the fact that there’s a subsection of childfree-by-choice women who know they’d make a different choice in different circumstances and have a little bit of grief about it. Like yes it’s still a choice and one that absolutely can lead to a happy life. But. It’s undeniable that if we lived in a society where it was affordable, or where there was help available, or where there was actual community, or where it wouldn’t make a direct and significant impact on career, or if the world weren’t sliding into fascism as the average temps creep ever higher… well things would be different and consequently one’s choices may be different.

Finding a way to be okay with it and see the upside doesn’t mean that you never feel sad to have closed that door.

Satoru becoming Instagram famous bc he keeps taking selfies with his Big Beefy Boyfriend Yuji and they're both pretty so ppl follow him for eye candy but every once in a while Satoru will post like, a blurry photo of Yuji cooking breakfast in a bathrobe and fuzzy pink flannel jammies and he looks exhausted but happy, and Satoru's caption will be a lil poem about how grateful he is to be alive because he gets to experience love and friendship and aging, when before he was convinced he'd die young and cold and alone, and most ppl relate to it in a "suicidal person who gets help" way, but no. no. Satoru is a sorcerer--semi-retired, but on track to join the council of elders. he is tired and damaged and DID almost die young, cold, alone

but Yuji didn't let him. because it wasn't right. and every so often Satoru remembers that and needs an hour or so to regain his composure. he never thought he'd have this. it's more than he ever dreamed possible. it hurts how grateful he is, that one teenage boy's conviction saved Satoru's life.

and now that boy is a grown man, a GOOD man, and in his kitchen and cooking for him and calling him 'babe' and smiling like Satoru is special and precious and lovable. and later they're going to go to work together, teaching scared children how to protect themselves and each other, and it'll feel like a dream but it will be real.

and in the meantime he documents his life, his love, so no one can ever doubt how proud he is of his Yuji.

earlier this year, the government of Ontario gave me a grant to write a book based on a pitch. and then I was like oh fuck, I actually need to write this book now.

but IT'S DONE! grant book is finished! it's very petite (>50k) and not at all my usual style of writing, but re-reading the ending made me cry in public, so maybe it's alright.

the premise is: you're a changeling. you were been swapped at birth for a human child, sent to human schools, and now in adulthood, are a bit of a failure. because, turns out, it's really hard to do human things when you're not actually human.

but still, things are going decently! until the human you were swapped for comes back to take their life. and - instead of treating them like an invader - everyone loves them. more than they do you.

definitely not a metaphor for anything, don't read into this too deeply, hahahahah! but anyway, it's called The Auf, and I hope it'll be a real book someday.
