these flowers are frozen and shine with crystal facets
this grass is brittle, encased in ice
the fish, underwater, stuck in place
and I think it’s unnerving
an eerie iridescent shine on it all
and I think it’s beautiful
though creatures cannot grow here
though nothing may change, I don’t mind
yet though I want it to stay enchanted like this
without new life and death it will grow stale
so soon comes a summer’s breeze
and the scenery, it wilts,
no longer supported by it’s arctic prison
flowers lose the semblance of preservation
and the grounds lie barren
‘til they bloom again
and the flowers do bloom again
but it is different than before
and when I try to compare them
I do not know which I would prefer
and so...
most may wish their lives be summer always
but me I like the winter
with its sedentary shine
I love it’s subtle glimmers
I love those frostbite days
for if it was always winter
I know you could stay mine
and though this frost may turn to dew
Ill wait through every season
until once more it’s me and you

the thing that works about rescuing Toby in Labyrinth as sarah's motivation that doesn't work for the one million YA fantasies that write "rescue their sibling" in the box labeled "progatonist's motivation" is that how much sarah loves toby isn't really the point. Caring for Toby is representative of Sarah's maturity by way of responsibility to other people, the thing that's directly at odds with her fantasy escapism. Her arc is learning how to take accountability for both her creativity and her real relationships so she can have both in a healthy, adult way, and toby is an obvious symbol of this that serves as a framework for the entire journey.
so many fictional idiot siblings are out here endangering themselves haphazardly for no thematic reason at all except that it gets the protagonist up and into the mechanics of the plot. this can be improved upon! the ancient texts (muppet movie) did it well and so can you!

This was a disaster- I shouldn’t have picked this up without the sequel! I need the sequel so bad.
This is a book that is inspired by Labyrinth. And it feels like it has Phantom of the Opera elements in it as well when you start reading it. Definitely also uses The Goblin Market.
All her life Liesl has heard tales of the Goblin King. They’ve enraptured her mind, her spirit, and inspired her musical compositions. She feels like her childhood fantasies and her musical dreams are slipping away as she is now 18 and helping to run her family’s inn. But now her own sister is taken by The Goblin King and she has to journey to the Underground to save her.
The writing was so good, and immersive. I absolutely could not put this down. I love it. I absolutely need the sequel, and I’m a little salty my order on Pango had to be cancelled cause the seller couldn’t find it. Almost feels like I can’t have it.
If you loved movies like Labyrinth, The Princess Bride, The Last Unicorn, Phantom of the Opera, or Legend- I definitely think you should pick this up.

Twenty Books Challenge, Part 2
Hypothetically, you are only able to keep 20 of your books. Only one book per author/series. So what books are you keeping?
I was tagged by @the-forest-library. Thank you! I’m opting to do it in two parts because I wanted the chance to reuse some old photos I’ve taken of the individual books (and tumblr only allows ten pictures per post–booooo!!!). Here are books 11 to 20. You can find the first ten here.
11. Different Seasons by Stephen King - This is a collection of novellas contains an absolute favorite book of mine, The Body. It’s extremely sentimental to me, and I’ve owned this copy since I was in middle school.
12. A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara - This is just another of the best books I’ve ever read that I need to reread.
13. Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister by Gregory Maguire - My brother, Robert, gave this to me when I was definitely not old enough to read it. It’s always been a favorite mine, and it’s particularly special to me now because Rob passed away in August.
14. Wintersong by S. Jae-Jones - This is probably my favorite fantasy book. I just love it so much and can’t be without it.
15. Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine - This is one of my absolute favorite fairy tale retellings. It’s such a joy to reread. Plus I’ve had this copy since I was young, so I’m quite attached to it.
16. Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke - This is another of my favorite fantasies. The worldbuilding is spectacular, and it is absolutely worth keeping and rereading.
17. Among Others by Jo Walton - Another wonderful fantasy that I want to reread. What I especially love about it is that it’s a love letter to the fantasy genre, and it includes a bunch of things I love: books, boarding schools, and fairies.
18. The Goose Girl by Shannon Hale - Another of my favorite retellings that I like to go back to periodically.
19. The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien - This is a childhood favorite of mine, but this copy has also been in my family for a few generations. It originally belonged to my mom and my uncle when they were kids, then it went to my brothers, then it went to me. It’s falling apart, but I absolutely would have to keep it!
20. The Brontës by Juliet Barker - This is my favorite work of nonfiction. It is the definitive biography of the Brontës, and there’s just so much information in it! Plus I got my copy at the Brontë Parsonage Museum on my first visit. It has a stamp inside to prove it!
I have no clue who else has done this, so sorry if you already have! I’m tagging: @dauen, @ninja-muse, @moderngothicbooks, @bookcub, and anyone who wants to do this!

if i had a nickel for every time i read a fantasy novel featuring a character loosely inspired by david bowie who was also raised by literal wolves, i would have two nickels. which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it’s happened twice

Drew this yesterday and forgot to post 😬.
I really like this for Alethia's new priestess outfit. Can you tell I would die for her? Bc I would, y'all 🤡
Anyways, she's trying to train, but her spells make the sad trombone sound bc she's anxious. A hug might help. Or a kiss 😏
