Side note, I saw Heathers at my local civic theater last night because my aunt gave me a gift card for Christmas, and I went with a healthy dose of skepticism because there like…aren’t any easy roles in that show vocal-wise. But damn, they REALLY pulled it off. Also their costume and hair and makeup departments put more effort into making everyone legit look like they were from the 80s than the professional productions.

1993 - Shannen Doherty portrayed by Davis Factor for the April 23, 1993 issue of Entertainment Weekly, featuring her on the cover.
Celebrity Hell
SHANNEN DOHERTY FEELS THE BURN
90210's fallen angel wants to heal her singed reputation. We show her (and other bedeviled stars) how to climb the stairway to heaven
By Lisa Schwartzaum.
THE CAREER CHALLENGES facing Shannen Doherty are these: How can she convince a skeptical public that she is not the tantrum-throwing prima donna, impoverished spendthrift, and out- of-control Hollywood headache that a barrage of reports in the higher and lower echelons of journalistic enterprise have made her out to be? How can the young star of Beverly Hills, 90210 redeem Brenda Walsh, her TV character, from the purgatory into which she has descended, wan and bereft of her broody boyfriend, Dylan McKay, and mocked by former fans who once loved wholesome Brenda but who now, at the end of the show's third season, hate her for her moody, goody-goody, expensively dressed ways? How can the small, pale, 22-year-old Southern Baptist from Memphis, Tenn., get everybody off her case?
For starters, she can settle in with a plate of french fries and a pack of Marlboro Lights and a cup of cappuccino and start confessing. About her money troubles. About how she knows she truly ought to stop smoking, since cancer runs in her family and the habit is turning her teeth yellow and will eventually make her fine skin look old. She can roast the old anti-Shannen chestnuts: that she slugged a woman in a bar; that she pitches fits to such an extent that she appeared as a joke in last week's Doonesbury. She can accept some blame.
Which is what she did – just as 90210 began its three-month spring hiatus this month and shortly before she left for a week's Hawaiian vacation with her live-in boyfriend, photo-studio owner Dean Factor, 28 (of the Max Factor cosmetics family), and with friend and 90210 classmate Tori Spelling, 19, and her beau, would-be actor Nick Savalas, 19. (Also planned for the break: starting work on Blindfold, a feature starring Judd Nelson; and attending a Grateful Dead concert.)
Tumblr media
In fact, Shannen Doherty – who first found fame a decade ago on TV's Little House on the Prairie and went on to torment Winona Ryder as a bitchy high school snob in the 1989 film Heathers – talked and talked and talked, as if her career depended on it. And now we talk back, with a tailor-made image-rehab plan for the woman who inspired The I Hate Brenda Newsletter: (Will Brenda go to the University of Minesota and be written out of the series next season? Get real.)
If you can't pay cash, you can't afford it. On the one hand, Doherty admits to running up major bills (some reports put her debt at over $36,000). On the other hand, Doherty says she's paying it off – and insists she's no pauper. "I'm really fed up with people printing how much I make, especially when they get it wrong," she says. "I do not make $12,000 a week. I make a lot more money than $12,000 a week. But I'm in the highest tax bracket, and I have, you know, attorneys to pay for. And, granted, I have gone on shopping binges. When you're young and all you know is how much money you make a week, you don't necessarily start thinking about, you know, everything that comes out of it." Splitting the rent on the Beverly Hills Cape Cod-style house she now shares with Factor will cut expenses, but there's still $13,000 in dispute on her former house, which the landlord claims is owed as back rent and which Doherty claims represents the security deposit and lease option owed to her. "I didn't get thrown out of my house," she says defiantly. "Otherwise I wouldn't still have the keys." The case is currently being litigated. Limiting herself to one Mercedes instead of two will also save a bit, although reports that several cars have been repossessed is just exhaust, she says. She authorized the repo of a 500 SL she had leased for an ex-boyfriend ("a car that I wasn't even driving, and for somebody that I wasn't even going out with"). "If I had all these problems with my leasing company, why am I able to drive around in a Mercedes that I leased through them right now?" Doherty challenges. "If I had all these financial problems, there's absolutely no way in hell a bank would finance an $80,000 car."
Tumblr media
2. The Donna Reed routine is refreshing. Keep it up. "My boyfriend and I are both sort of through with doing the night-club scene and partying and drinking," says Doherty, who has often been photographed carousing (usually with Spelling and accompanying escorts) at L.A.'s trendy club, Roxbury. "Clubbing was a big part of me, but I think it's because I was a little lost. I was young and under a lot of pressure and unhappy in my personal relationship. I don't have that problem anymore." She now describes an idyllic life of cooking chicken dinners with Factor and playing with her three dogs. Staying home should help her bottom line, too: After she made headlines like BRAWLING STARLET BUSTED last December for tangling at Roxbury with lesser-known actress Bonita Money (charges were eventually dropped), she says she lost at least three product-endorsement deals.
3. Shock your public: Say you're sorry! "I will grant that in the first season, I was not the most diplomatic person. But I did not throw temper tantrums. I went days and days and days without having a fit! Weeks!" says Doherty, with a laugh. "You know, right now I feel very much in control. Besides," she adds, more wishful, perhaps, than sure, "there are a lot of people out there who are getting very, very sick of Brenda bashing. People come up to me and go, like, 'We thought you'd be a bitch, we just wanted to come up and see if you were or weren't. And you're not." (The 90210 cast, having offered supportive comments in the past, is now tired of being asked about her; Doherty's recently fired publicist gives a terse "no comment" on her former client.)
Tumblr media
4. Lighten up. That goes for Shannen and Brenda. Doherty is deeply steamed about the jokey one-shot I Hate Brenda Newsletter, which rode a wave of anti-Brenda/Shannen sentiment and showered considerable media attention on its two young creators. "It's ridiculous," she says, non-temper flaring, "that two girls, wherever they are, are so incredibly jealous of one person who happens to be on TV and are so desperate for publicity that they would create lies." But she can see how one might think Brenda is a pill. "The [90210] writers and I have had this conversation," she says. "Let's make her not quite so pathetic, let's have her mellow out.' And that is happening. You'll see Brenda spiritually become a little bit of a stronger person." (Of late, Brenda is looking spiritually subdued: humble in washed-out lipstick tones and more modestly dressed.)
5. Do not do that Playboy pictorial. She's thinking about it, negotiating with the magazine over how much of her body she'd expose. "They offered me a very large sum of money – over $300,000 – which I think anybody would have a very hard time turning down," she explains. "Besides, it might make people say, hey, she's not Brenda Walsh, she is Shannen Doherty, and she can play a lot older than 17 and high school." We repeat: Don't do it. If you pose, you will share that undistinguished honor with Mimi Rogers. La Toya Jackson. Joan Collins. Vanna White. And you'll never, ever win back Dylan McKay.

Heathers Headcanons that live Rent-Free in my Head (Pt. 2)
Veronica:
Her birthday is October 29th (Winona Ryder's)
Ambidextrous
Has always been a huge nerd
Before Duke got her into classics, she liked sci-fi stuff like Ender's Game and Dune
Made Duke watch Spaceballs with her at some point (Their friendship has so much untaped potential-)
puts the milk before her cereal (This has made Chandler and Duke cry before)
Has a very noisy brain that refuses to shut up (iykyk), she turns to journaling to organize her thoughts and make sense of things
Often gets lost in her thoughts and forgets to pay attention to her surroundings
Has been known to pace around scribbling furiously in her journal for hours on end
Loves to pick up random things on the ground and keep them (She and Mac exchange shiny things, it's their friendship langauge)
Decent driver, if a little inattentive
Chandler:
Birthday is June 19 (Kim walker's)
Always wanted an older brother (someone who she could look up to & would protect her)
Cheats so hard at boardgames and card games
But never at croquet
So. Many. Freckles. Hides them with an inordinate amount of concealer (ik almost the entire fandom hcs this but I had to hop on the bandwagon too)
Refuses to go anywhere without a clear expectation of the situation
Or her planner and 12 color-coded pens
One time Heather and Heather threw her a surprise party for her birthday and she started sobbing because she thought it was an ambush
World's shittiest sense of smell (that's why she drank the drain cleaner, also she applies absurd amounts of perfume to compensate)
This also kinda affects her sense of taste. That's why she only likes BQ corn nuts, they have a flavor to her
Really likes flowers. She can't smell them well, but she thinks they're gorgeous. All her favorite perfumes are flower scents.
The one she uses most is lavender
Best driver of all the Heathers, which is saying something. This girl is a menace to the road. She goes like 90 in a 50mph zone and loves to run stopsigns/red lights
But she doesn't have road rage, it's honestly a little scary
Duke:
Birthday is April 12 (Shannon Doherty's)
Her favorite book is Catcher in the Rye (and Moby Dick ofc)
Veronica got her into scifi movies
Starwars and Spaceballs are now her guilty pleasure
She was named after some dead great-grandma she never met
her parents named her siblings Hunter and Hannah because they thought "ohho funny matching name children"
Only chews mint gum
doesn't go through as much as Mac, but will put like 2-3 pieces in her mouth at a time
Hums under her breath whenever she does little tasks like washing the dishes/doing her homework
When Gatsby hisses at her, she will hiss right back
Is much smilier around her cat than people
Worse driver than Chandler. Instead of running stop signs/red lights at 80MPH and nearly running people over, Duke swerves like crazy and flips people off through the window (To her the highway is a jigsaw puzzle)
Has somehow never gotten in an accident
She has horrendous road rage
McNamara:
Her birthday is December 3rd (Lisanne Falk's)
LOVE LOVE LOVES Madonna, her favorite song is "like a prayer"
Animal lover and devout vegetarian
also puts the milk before the cereal (this upsets Duke and Chandler less since they're so used to it)
way more observant than people give her credit for
Tries so hard, but just can't keep secrets
Hates lying. One of the only things she gets really mad about is when people lie to her
Has a million jingly key chains
Duke calls her "Macpie" because she loves to collect shiny things
Bonus points if it's shiny AND makes a noise (yes she is obsesed with those tiny jinglebells)
Loves to carry her friends with her cheerleader arms
Can jump freaky high
Coffee quite literally puts this girl to sleep
The worst driver of all the Heathers. She likes to think of road laws as 'guidelines'
JD:
Birthday is October 13th (Firday the 13th in his birth year)
Secretly a Canadian (French-Canadian specifically)
Speaks a little bit of French
He and Chandler argue in French all the time. It's how he brushes up on his conversational skills
Is even more of a cheater than Chandler
Favorite book is Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
His favorite Heather is Duke. He likes to talk books with her and respects her sharp sense of humor.
Plays the saxophone (this is technically canon but specifically alto sax in my head), his favorite genres are jazz and blues
We all know he'd listen to modern day emo music without an ounce of shame
And call the stoner kids posers
Compulsively sharpens the few pencils he doesn't lose. Like he writes two or three sentences and then makes it POINTY again
Can't choose between cherry slushies and coke slushies, so he mixes both and goes Cherry Coke
In my AUs where he dies, JD's grave is right next to his mom's
One of the safest drivers you'll ever meet, but likes to go fast on his motorcycle. He thinks he's such a bad boy for going 5 over the speed limit lol

Chain of Influence from Alexa Chung's IT: Heathers and Beetlejuice
Alexa Chung used to be a British TV host, model, and the IT girl of the 2010s. Ballet flats, hot pants, cashmere cardigans, and statement sunglasses made her a modern fashion icon. During a time when skinny jeans, neon accessories, and flower crowns were a thing, the IT girl stood out with ahead-of-her-time style choices. She definitely was one of the first well-known women that I sourced my creative inspiration from.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"IT"
In 2013, Alexa released her debut book IT, featuring her drawings, style influences from film and music and witty advice. This pastel pink, 'cultural reset' of a book, catered to young, aspiring "It" girls and wannabe Vogue Editors. Despite receiving critiques akin to a "wasted opportunity", IT marked the sweet beginning of character development for my 13-year-old self. The book led me on a transformative journey, unveiling my taste in music, film, and fashion - a chain of influence, if you will.
Tumblr media
HEATHERS (1988)
One of the films that started my endless love for cinema and marked the chain of influence, was Heathers (1988) - directed by Michael Lehmann and written by Daniel Waters. A satirical and macabre cult classic about a high school, where obnoxious jocks rule and the mean girls are all called Heather - until Veronica (Winona Ryder) and her mysterious boyfriend (Christian Slater) plot to exterminate every bully. Pair a cinematic legend (our girl Wino) with a sexy hunk that is Christian Slater, and you have yourself an 80s classic. Watching this film when you’re 14 years old, in your secret world (my room) on a mini laptop was a transformative experience. In a sense that, in that moment, I fully understood the magic that cinema held, and all I knew was that I wanted more. My eyes could not get enough of the cinematography, the costumes and the beautiful young actors - all while the haunting Syd Straw’s voice sang Que Sera, Sera (strongly advisable to put this song on while reading this post).
Tumblr media
The film itself tells a classic tale of relational agression between high school girls. In the words of Lyn Mikel Brown, or her book of the same name - Girlfighting (2003), the author argues that for quite some time, soap-operas, films, and reality TV had only focused on women who are in competition with one another. Heathers falls right into that category. Its main focus is Veronica Sawyer (Winona Ryder) - one of the Heathers clique, who finally gets tired of being an accomplice to other school kids’ misery. She has this line in the film: “I don’t really like my friends. It is like they are people I work with and our job is being popular”. It is the moment where Veronica foreshadows her involvement in the downfall of her mean friends. The irony of the twist is as absurd as it gets - a kind-hearted girl hates to see mean girls bullying everyone, so she turns to murder to end the meanness altogether.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
COSTUMES
Iconic, voluminous hair, fitted checkered jackets with shoulder pads, midi grandma skirts, coloured stockings and none other, than bitchy attitudes! Every shot of Heathers is filled with endless outfit inspiration, curated by Rudy Dillon. Oh, how fun would it have been to dress like that in high school. I love how this kind of fashion evokes a nostalgic longing for a time before I was even born. From then on out, you could not catch me leaving a vintage clothing store without an 80's padded jacket.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Guessing who I went as for Halloween in 2014 would be easy. I put my grey skirt on, borrowed my grandpa’s ashy blue t-shirt, covered my face in fake blood and bought a paper cigar from Tiger. It was magical. I walked around saying “What’s your damage, Heather?” - sadly, no one understood the reference back then and I ended up really scaring my mum. I might have been better at Maths, had I not been rewatching Heathers every other evening. However, no regrets. 2 + 2 is still 4, forever till the end of time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Beetlejuice (1988)
IT's chain of influence continued naturally when I decided to explore Winona’s earlier work. The first one that came to mind was Winona’s breakthrough film 'Beetlejuice' (1988), crafted by the extravagant auteur Tim Burton, who is renowned for the gothic and fantastical settings in his work. The contrast-heavy cinematography in Burton’s mise-en-scène is highly influenced by German Expressionism, an art movement that emerged in Germany in the early 20th century. The most predominant aspects of this movement include distorted sets, angular or weirdly-shaped architecture, and a dark, frightening atmosphere.
The film tells the story of a recently deceased couple (Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin), who start haunting their own home after a new family moves in. In an attempt to scare away the living occupants, the couple summons a mischievous spirit named Betelgeuse (Michael Keaton) by saying his name three times. The narrative takes an intriguing turn with the introduction of Winona Ryder's character, Lydia, who, along with her parents (Catherine O’Hara and Jeffrey Jones), becomes entangled with the supernatural world. Winona Ryder delivers a captivating performance as Lydia, portraying a goth teenage girl with the ability to see the dead.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
CINEMATOGRAPHY
Cinematographer Thomas E. Ackerman fully realised Burton’s ominous vision for the film. Every single shot is like a surrealist painting - a true feast for the eyes. Even if one does not find the film’s plot appealing, the visual aesthetic will still definitely satisfy one’s artistic hunger. Ackerman's attention to detail and use of lighting contribute to the film's haunting atmosphere, making it a visual masterpiece.
Beetlejuice vs. The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
As mentioned previously, the influence of German Expressionism is evident in Burton’s work, and in my opinion, especially in Beetlejuice. The film has striking visual similarities to, arguably, one of the first horror films, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920), directed by Robert Wiene. The film follows a somnambulist who makes horrifying predictions of future events. I watched it during my first year of film studies, and I have to say, I was utterly spellbound. The fact that a film without any sound can be that spine-chilling, still blows my mind.
The distorted corridor in Beetlejuice mirrors the endless, distorted corridor in The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. It evokes a sense of claustrophobia, almost like an optical illusion. The surrealist, angular structure of the Caligari corridor seamlessly fits into Beetlejuice, capturing the dreamlike, or rather nightmarish atmosphere.
In the following comparison shots, we can even identify a door with a diagonal line in Burton’s still, and the exact same shaped detail (window/door) on the house in Wiene’s still. Furthermore, there is a black silhouette of a man in the background, seemingly holding a broom in Burton’s shot. Similarly, in Caligari’s shot, there is a man wearing black, holding what appears to be a cane.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The following two shots sparked an 'aha' moment for me. In one, the green light and the appearance of a dead bride with a tulle veil emerge from the darkness. In another, there is a muted green light covering the room, and a girl sleeps in a white nightgown, reminiscent of a wedding dress, on a bed adorned with tulle sheets.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
THE DINNER
There's a campy (and even a bit meta) dinner scene in Beetlejuice, making it one of the most standout moments in cinema to date. It features Lydia, her parents, and their friends. In an attempt to scare them into leaving, the deceased couple (the Maitlands) and Betelgeuse possess the guests. One by one, they start moving involuntarily and start to sing Harry Belafonte’s 'Day-O (The Banana Boat Song),' in his distinctive voice. I truly love this artistic decision because it cleverly uses dark humour and absurdity to dilute the frightening topic of spirits and afterlife.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As I reflect on this chain of influence, I think of it as the epitome of 'one thing led to another.' I love that I could delve into Winona Ryder's creative universe and discover life-altering cinematic classics as a young girl. This, however, is just one of the many discoveries I made as a 13-year-old reading Alexa's book. More is yet to come...

It’s been so quiet on here that no one has talked about Noah’s Letterboxd reviews post Saturday Night. Here they are (warning- some minor spoilers):
The Substance (5 Stars):
One of the best films I’ve seen in past months. Wow. The jaw-dropped look on my face when the credits hit tells you all you need to know. It was truly flawless from start to finish, with not a single dull moment in its 140-minute runtime. Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley deliver outstanding performances, fully embodying their characters. The story is a horrifying but important celebration of self-acceptance, reminding us that we are perfect just the way we are. This is the ultimate anti-Ozempic / plastic surgery film of the year.
It Follows (4 Stars):
So so goood…. And then they just don’t end it. What the heck?! It was so well shot and well acted and then they just didn’t bring it home. Unsatisfied.
We Live In Time (5 Stars): Beautiful tale about making the most of your days you have. I sobbed in the last scene. I loved how they didn’t show her dying but rather a soft transition into the aftermath. Felt like more of a gut punch.
Heathers (5 Stars)
“I love my dead gay son!!”
Anora (5 Stars):
WOWWWW man that was amazing. Everything about it. I loved how real it felt. The scenes were so much longer than normal and I loved that about it. You would sit with these characters in one moment for such a long time and it made it feel so authentic. Nothing felt produced or scripted. It was also SO FUNNY at parts. Mikey Madison was amazing.
I also really appreciated her dynamic with the bald guy. It was such a stark contrast to her relationship with the Russian boy, which was purely physical. With the security guard, it was about connection—they’d just talk or share silence, and it felt real. Their journey from enemies to lovers was so satisfying.
Mermaids (5 Stars):
Cher, Winona Ryder, and Christina ricci? Iconic. Love that Noni’s thing became ending movies with dancing scenes. She eats everytime
Cinderella (4 Stars):
“Be kind, have courage and always believe in a little magic.”
I love him, he's so cute!! Crossing my fingers for the dream scenario of the core 4 boys actors starting up a movie review podcast one day. Literally the biggest dream. Noah is so insightful and honest and I love that he's not afraid to show passion and sincere thoughts on films. I love Letterboxd for the tracking and lists aspect, but so many people on there use the review function just to be quippy and it's so NOAH to be sincere and show his love of exploring film. Even when he doesn't say much it's still pretty fun and honest.
Also him being Winona's number one fan is the sweetest thing 🥹❤️

astra!! do you have any hcs for dad regulus when his daughter is older?? you’ve shared lots about reggie and baby, but i’m curious now about reggie and toddler/preteen/teenager
RHEJAJSJDJSKD YES
reggie and toddler — they’re both horribly clingy to one another. she latches onto him, and when james suggests daycare, she and regulus start to cry (james cries too when they drop her off for the first time). he makes her one of those growth chart things where she stands against the wall and he marks her progress with a pen, always saying, “at this rate, you’ll tower over me someday!” to which james responds, “it’s not hard to tower over you, baby.” regulus helps keep her soft toddler curls all nice and fluffy, absolutely pampering her with a morning curl routine they do together. he buys her so many cute little outfits and has her do fashion shows all the time (there are polaroids everywhere immortalizing this), and she always asks him to sing to her and read her stories <333
reggie and preteen — he’s constantly getting worked up about how much she’s growing. james is too, but sometimes he’ll walk in on regulus sobbing over his old ultrasound pictures and be like😀. god once she hits ten it’s over for him. she’s like “papa you’re embarrassing me!!” but he just squeezes her tighter until she’s gasping for air and he’s gotta let her go so she doesn’t suffocate. of course, they start to get into little spats, but they always end up laughing at the end because one of them will say something ridiculously sarcastic. he and james both try to be “hip” with the new kid slang, and oh my god it mortifies their daughter😭she’s just trying to get through her primary school choir concert and they’re like “YEAH LITTLE STAR YOURE BITCHIN’!!”
reggie and teen — constant bickering, but in an endearing way. they can get into explosive arguments, but it’s just because he’s really not ready to let her go yet, and it’s hitting him so fast that he has no idea how to respond. when she has a bad day, she still asks him to sing to her, but now they sing together and read some pretentious novel or other. he takes her to see all the hit movies (he waits on heathers, but once she’s old enough, they both become obsessed), and she turns into a total winona ryder freak because of it. she’s lydia deetz every halloween for like five years. when edward scissorhands comes out, regulus wants to bash his head into the wall from how many times his daughter plays ice dance on the piano. she definitely goes through a grunge phase, but jegulus are all for it; regulus helps her with her makeup, and they buy her tickets to all the concerts she wants to go to — though regulus draws the line when she asks him to learn “lithium” by nirvana on the piano💀when she moves out, he’s a fucking wreck, but she never goes far, and they have weekly dinners forever and ever and ever. also she absolutely teases him when he starts going grey (salt-and-pepper regulus🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤), so he gets revenge by temporarily charming her hair grey one day.

When I decided to do this blog, I looked around for an image to be the avatar. Winona Ryder, bleeding, filthy and smoking, was the obvious choice. I knew it was from Heathers, and I thought "I haven't seen that movie in a long time. I should watch it again."
Friends, I watched it last night and it was even darker than I remembered. Everybody knows it's a comedy about teenagers who murder other kids and make it look like suicides, but there is so much more.
J.D. (Christian Slater), the new sociopath in town, was traumatized by his mother's suicide - she snuck into a building that J.D.'s demolition expert dad was about to blow up, waved at her son from a window and BOOM.
There's more sexual assault than I remembered. One of the Heathers is coerced into giving a guy a blowjob at a party. Another Heather maybe gets raped by a football player - it isn't clear. Veronica (Winona Ryder) has to physically defend herself when J.D. assaults her several times.
There are two good people in the whole movie - Martha Dumptruck and Betty Finn. Everyone else is either outright horrible or just indifferent to the suffering around them. Actually, Dumptruck and Finn might be awful too - they're pretty much just victims, but that doesn't make them good.
J.D. makes some really good points. "Society nods its head at any horror the American teenager can think to bring upon itself" is just plain truth. I had a hard time disagreeing with him. Really, the worst thing about him - aside from physically attacking Veronica - is that he wants to take other people with him when he commits suicide.
On the other hand, Heathers wasn't as dark as it could've been. Setting the murders aside for a moment, the bullying is pretty soft. I saw or experienced many things in high school that were a lot more cruel than the worst of what's shown in Heathers. The teenagers have various problems, but none of them appear to experiencing physical abuse from their parents. The drug and alcohol use are also pretty tame.
In the end, Veronica prevents J.D. from killing everybody - truly beautiful moment: J.D. flips Veronica off and she shoots his middle finger off - and watches him blow himself up - he dies the way his mom did. That's the point where my avatar comes from. Then Veronica goes inside the high school and makes friends with Martha Dumptruck. Apparently, participating in the murders of several kids and witnessing a suicide didn't upset her much.
Heathers is one of the movies that will always be associated with Gen X, before we even got stuck with the name Gen X. This is totally appropriate.
Addendum: I just read an article about Heathers and learned that there were a few other possible endings that were considered. In one of them, Martha Dumptruck would have murdered Veronica, stabbing her and calling her "Heather" repeatedly. Holy shit - I gotta say, that would have been a better ending.

∘₊✧── SHRIKE MALL EVENT; HEATHERS PREMIERE
a teen movie to end all teen movies...
residents of shrike heights are in for a treat as the highly anticipated film heathers premieres across the country, including at our very own sunrise theatre in shrike mall.
veronica ( winona ryder ) is part of the most popular clique at her high school, but she disapproves of the other girls' cruel behavior. when veronica and her new boyfriend, j.d. ( christian slater ), confront clique leader heather chandler ( kim walker ) and accidentally poison her, they make it appear a suicide. soon veronica realizes that j.d. is intentionally killing students he does not like. she races to stop j.d. while also clashing with the clique's new leader, heather duke ( shannen doherty ).
time: 8PM date: 03/31/1989 location: SUNRISE THEATRE - CINEMA 03
ooc info - we’ve been waiting for a very long time for this 80s classic to premiere in game, so of course we had to celebrate it with it’s very own event !! unlike the last big film premiere event that went so scarily wrong, shrike mall is skipping the midnight screenings and opting for a safer, earlier time. they’re also holding the premiere in a different theatre than the one that saw the start of the horrific attack at the premiere of the lost boys. while some residents appreciate the changes made to adapt to the current climate of the town, others are shocked that such a violent film is even allowed to be played in the very cinema that has seen bloodshed and the loss of lives. needless to say, sunrise employees are anxiously waiting to see how the night unfolds. please note that there will not be any plot drops related to this event, which also means that writers are free to write any event related threads at any time !!

The Independent (UK) – Opinion
Shannen Doherty was irresistible, underrated, and permanently shackled to misogynistic speculation
The ‘Beverly Hills, 90210’ star, who has died of cancer, played women too interesting to be simplistically boxed in – and spent a large part of her career waiting for the respect she deserved, writes Adam White
Sunday 14 July 2024
Shannen Doherty, who has died at the age of 53 following years of living with cancer, was an actor famous for playing women to whom respect wasn’t immediately granted.
Her Nineties TV hits Beverly Hills, 90210 and Charmed – shows embraced by generations of young people growing up both then and now – cast her as characters who, to the unenlightened, could be read as bitches or mean girls, those annoying descriptors always levelled at women too complicated and interesting to be simplistically boxed in. But as a skilled if often underrated actor, she was deft at conveying pride and regret beneath the surface grumpiness; the feeling of women only being a certain way because the world has made them so.
Doherty was also one of the OG tabloid fixtures, a child star gone berserk (not really) whose club-hopping and on-set lateness apparently warranted round-the-clock coverage at the top of the Nineties. She experienced the kind of wrath that could only have existed back then – regular headlines in the National Enquirer that weren’t ignored at the supermarket checkout line but actually had an impact on her career; a popular newsletter for pre-internet teens who could come together every month to talk about how much they hated Doherty and Brenda Walsh, the mouthy teen she played in 90210.
She has since admitted to being incredibly hurt by all of this – it contributed to her firing from 90210 in 1994 – but it did at least add to the lore that surrounded her. Doherty was sharp and icy and a tiny bit dangerous – all the things despised by the boring among us, and oddly irresistible to those who secretly wanted to be like that themselves.
Doherty was also incredibly glamorous, stomping around with the force of a supermodel and with black hair so shiny that you can imagine millions of women over the decades bouncing between box dyes trying to emulate it just right. I adored watching her on screen, the sense that she was always just on the cusp of slapping someone – as part of a clique of cruel teens in the Winona Ryder classic Heathers, say, or as the pissed-off girlfriend in Kevin Smith’s Mallrats. She was brilliant in Charmed, as the eldest of a trio of sister witches, who understood the weight of her duty to protect the innocent. Prue Halliwell was cool, responsible, complex and always inappropriately dressed for battle, but pfft – who says you can’t kill a demon in a belly shirt and a miniskirt?
I loved how much Doherty gave to incredibly bad made-for-television movies, too. Friends ’Til the End, in 1997, saw her play an aspiring musician being stalked by her best friend (the tracks sound like Cranberries knock-offs and Doherty’s voice has an air of Susanna Hoffs of the Bangles). Satan’s School for Girls (2000) cast her as an undercover reporter investigating evil witches on a university campus. Blindfold: Acts of Obsession, from 1994, is the kind of erotic thriller so devoid of eroticism that it becomes almost hypnotic. But Doherty is good in all of them, always magnetic and spirited and salvaging whatever she can from dismal scripts.
From 2023, Doherty hosted her own podcast – Let’s Be Clear – a kind of audio autobiography that covered her work, her personal life and her health. Tales of her cancer journey – she was diagnosed in 2015 with breast cancer, which went into remission and then returned, latterly spreading to her brain and bones – were sobering and moving. Doherty was reluctant to pretty up what had been a life-affirming if undeniably painful time. But the most fascinating episodes were ones in which she conversed with Hollywood women equally hurt by an industry that has only ever celebrated female compliance, and only begrudgingly given positive attention to those who march to the beat of their own drum.
She had a natural kinship with the likes of Sarah Michelle Gellar, Katherine Heigl, Tori Spelling and Christina Ricci, all of whom appeared on her show. Like Doherty, they are actors who arrived in Hollywood as children, grew up in the spotlight, and found themselves permanently shackled to misogynist speculation about their character: they were too difficult, too unpredictable, too eager to have a voice on chaotic sets.
Tumblr media
Doherty never claimed total innocence; she was happy to admit to sometimes reading the room wrong, or getting defensive rather than looking for a compromise during arguments. But her cancer also provided her with a sense of clarity about her past – the things she should apologise for, and the things she absolutely shouldn’t. She put to bed years of speculation about what had happened on the set of Charmed – she was fired after significant on-set tensions with her co-star Alyssa Milano, a feud inflamed by male producers – and spoke eloquently about the relationships she regretted and the domestic violence she experienced while working on 90210.
It was often quite beautiful – here was a woman who knew she was dying, but wouldn’t go quietly or with unfinished business. She was funny, sassy, a little intimidating. It was Doherty to a tee. What fool would expect any different?

Movie Review and Spoiler - #6
“Heathers”
Chaos, murder, high school drama, teen romance, Winona Ryder, and Christian Slater.
Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, and yes! Chaos is fun! Murder is snazzy. High school drama can be entertaining and inevitable. Teen romance, while exciting, can end in a doozy. Winona Ryder. And then Christian Slater was the definition of crazy, broody hot.
I loved the movie and the musical soundtrack (I have yet to watch the musical). Would recommend it for veteran teens, young adults, and above.
Spoiler: BOOM!!
