#8 Global Social Media Practice: The Great Firewall of China
There is a common misconception relating to China’s use of the internet and social media. It is public knowledge that the Chinese government has blocked mainstream global social media giants Facebook, Twitter, Google and so on.. But are they really missing out? We as frequent users of these sights might argue yes, I mean what is a world without scrolling through these sights daily? Alternatively, China have created apps replicating these sights that are specifically made to cater for the government regulations and to suit the average Chinese person. There is a current social media revolution occurring in China that many of us are completely unaware of.  Are any of these names alternative to our apps familiar to you? Instead of Google: Baidu Instead of Twitter: Weibo  Instead of Youtube: Youku Instead of WhatsApp: We Chat Instead of Messenger: QQ While these apps are not currently pertinent to us living in the ‘Western World’, there is a chance that they may penetrate our market in the future as these large scale applications begin to infiltrate the global market. China currently has the worlds largest population of internet users which gives these alternative apps such a strategic advantage in user engagement and to become successful (Chiu, Lin & Silverman 2012). There are many factors also driving Chinese citizens to part-take in social media engagement such as “rural-to-urban migration that has separated families, the loneliness of the one-child generation, and a distrust of information from government-controlled media” (Crampton 2011), also creating such a strong opportunity for Chinese-specific social media giants.  Why the need for the great firewall of China? While most countries operate a form of surveillance, Chinese surveillance is of the extreme level deemed necessary by the government in order to restore social  order and safeguard national security (Quicktake 2017). The censorship even extended to Winnie the Pooh at one point who was temporarily banned as their was apparent resemblance to the current president Xi Jinping.
The ways in which Chinese citizens utilise the internet and its applications is vastly different to our Western culture. While they are trying to combat the larger issues at hand, freedom of speech and privacy is diminished with the interruption of the great firewall. There is also controversy over this censorship in relation to constraining creativity and innovation which may be improved with connectivity to services such as Google Cloud. Living in such a free country makes it hard to imagine living in a world bound by a censored firewall and thus it would require more in depth research to comment further on its effectiveness.

China and social media
Tumblr media
The world wide web looks very different to China than it does for us in the western world. In 2012, the Chinese government set in place a firewall called the golden shield project (but it would be a missed opportunity if we didn’t call it The Great Firewall of China so we’re gonna roll with that) in order to protect its citizens from access to politically sensitive information. It is ultimately in place to surveillance its users and censor anything they deem inappropriate. Some aims of the firewall are to neutralise critical online opinions and prevent its citizens from being corrupted by ‘evil’ cultures. Many sites have been shut down for violating their constitution and attacking state leaders. Even though they have such strict rules about the internet, China have a huge amount of individuals who still chose to access it, with four out of five Chinese people accessing it on a mobile device alone. That’s a higher percentage of the population than America, who have 75%.
China have been known to ban some of the most absurd things, for example, Winnie the Pooh was banned from Chinese social media because he too closely resembled the President, Xi Jinping.
Tumblr media
Social media has a bigger influence on purchasing decisions for consumers in China than for those anywhere else in the world (Chiu, Lin, Silverman, 2012). In China, people don’t tend to believe what they see or hear in the media so take most of their advice from family and friends. This has shaped the way Chinese shop online as they’re more likely to buy things they see advertised on social media, especially if it has been recommended on a friends social media, or that of someone they trust (Chiu, Lin, Silverman, 2012).
Thanks to ‘The Great Firewall of China’, Chinese citizens don’t have access to to social media sites you know and love, like Facebook and Twitter. Instead, they have their own social media platforms. One of these is called ‘Sina Weibo’. Weibo is similar to Twitter, in that you can share messages up to 140 characters, attach photos, videos, URLs, and repost and like messages. 140 Chinese characters can deliver a lot more information than 140 English ones, so Weibo has been known to create actions and dissent against state authorities (Wang, 2015). This being said, the government still highly monitor all its content so they can’t really get away with much.
At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter much where you live, social media is everywhere and it’s almost inevitable that we all part take in it at one point or another.

The Great Firewall of China
Wait WHAT?! People in China don’t have Facebook?!… or Twitter... Instagram... Snapchat… not even Tumblr?! How do they live?!
Tumblr media
I guess that’s very “Western” of me to say… apparently they get on just fine with plenty of substitute social media sites that do exactly the same thing. So what are they missing?
In late 2012, the Chinese Government reinforced an internet firewall attempting to block users from politically sensitive information. In other words, their social media is heavily censored according to what the government believes is politically appropriate - if they don’t agree, you don’t get to see it.
However this hasn’t deterred users from their social media, as according to Statistica 2018, the amount of users in millions has increased by 99.8 million in just 4 years! These substitute platforms must be pretty damn good. Maybe we’re the ones missing out?
However this heavy surveillance raises some serious concerns about freedom of speech and opinion in the Chinese community. They couldn’t even liken their President to universally loved Winnie The Pooh without getting Winnie banned from all social media.
Tumblr media
Yet not even this could deter the Chinese from their social media. According to Chiu, Lin, D & Silverman 2012, 95% of people living in tier 1, 2 or 3 cities are register on a social media site. Although they lack a trust in formal institutions, this has only encouraged more peer-to-peer interaction via online means. They’re all in the same boat.
The Chinese have created their own online world, with a completely different set of social norms and forms of communication. The government can’t stop users from interacting, but I’m sure this isn’t what they’re trying to do anyway. Maybe you could say that the Chinese are sheltered by the online censorship laws, or maybe they’re better off than the rest of us? You’d think there’d be more community protest against the government if this was the case, but instead they seem to be thriving.
I guess it’s hard to understand how it all works when I’ve never been myself, nor do I know anyone who has been. It seems a shame to have what in my mind should be a private, safe space for people to come together so heavily monitored by government forces, but I guess even we too are monitored by forces we don’t even known. Maybe like it does for me, the fear of surveillance is only ever brief - the internet is just too good not to be a part of, even if it comes at a cost.

#8 - China’s Firewall Case Study
Tumblr media
Growing up, Winnie the Pooh was an icon of my childhood. Winnie and Eeyore, two best friends that every child wishes their friendship looked like. However, in China, Winnie the Pooh has been banned from the internet. So, what led to the blocking of Winnie the Pooh? Well, multiple memes quickly went viral when people were comparing their leader, Xi Jinping, to the children’s character. From personal experiences, I regularly scroll through Facebook or social media and see Australian politicians being mocked or having memes made about them. These jokes are usually light hearted especially when used in conjunction with a children’s character and generally improves the popularity of the politician, however, this is not allowed in China. According to McDonell (2017), the internet censors that run through China’s networks, have been instructed not to ‘tolerate ridicule of the country’s leaders’. Winnie was re-contextualised to represent something new therefore he was deleted from online completely. The Chinese Government don’t want the general public thinking that their leader is like them with quirky elements or does silly things like Winnie the Pooh does. They want people to see the President as above them and that his power cannot be questioned (McDonell 2017).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In China, WeChat is generally the social media of choice, however, like other social media platforms, WeChat is very heavily monitored by the Government. There over 18,000 prohibited websites, phrases and words (Holden 2014) that as soon as they are sent from one person, they are automatically blocked. For example, if someone sends “Liu Xiaobo”; who is a Chinese writer, human rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize winner; the message will say it was sent but the recipient won’t receive it. This is because “Lui Xiaobo” is one of the phrases on the long list of blocked words.
However, controlling the view of the country’s leaders is not the only reason why the Chinese Government has such a strict internet policy. China is one of the leaders in social media usage because of the high percentage of their population that uses it (Chiu, Lin & Silverman 2012, p.1). It is well known that people are more inclined to buy a product if it is endorsed by someone on social media (Chiu, Lin & Silverman 2012, p.1). Therefore, if the Government can slightly manipulate what people are saying on social media, they can influence how people promote products and consequentially benefiting their countries economy.
I will admit, I didn’t know much more about this firewall than the fact that you can’t access Facebook from within China and from the outside, I thought China’s firewall was a political move to isolate their people and control the views of the Government. After learning more about the wall, I still do have similar views as before, however, I have more of an understanding of why the Government may have enforced these restrictions as a way to protect the country and benefit it economically. But really, does that justify the generations of children who will miss out on a vital part of their childhood? I mean Winnie the Pooh by the way, not the freedom of children exploring the internet.

Owlに入る前は、Bain & Company、Silver Lake Partners、Warburg and Pincus で経験を積んだ。

OUTFEST 2020 FILM REVIEW: THE TEACHER (3 Stars)
Tumblr media
With Taiwan passing the first Marriage Equality Law in Asia in 2019, it’s exciting to delve into LGBTQ+ stories from a historically conservative society going through such immense changes.  Ming-Lang Chen’s The Teacher follows a young Civics teacher name Kevin (Oscar Chiu) who meets an older factory owner, Jin-Wu Gao (Chin-HaoChang), at a bathhouse and embarks on an intense relationship fraught with multiple issues for both.  While Kevin experiences homophobic taunts from his students and frequent warnings from his Principal, Gao has a wife (Winnie Shih-Ying Chang) who knows about his sexuality but still wants them to conceive a baby. That Gao has HIV only serves to complicate matters all around.
While featuring honest, passionate performances, the film unfortunately suffers from a plodding pace and an often on-the-nose screenplay.  As such, it feels like an issue-driven film instead of a finely detailed character study. We know very little about Gao and how he feels about the many conflicts in his life. He remains fairly quiet and stoic, even when his crises escalate. Perhaps it’s a result of his character’s maturity, but it results in him feeling dramatically inert.
Conversely, Kevin’s character has a terrific arc and his passion and anger builds nicely to a raw face-off scene at a hospital.  Where his character ends up also feels like a revolutionary statement, especially for Taiwan.  The somewhat frank depictions of gay sex also feel pretty rebellious. Additionally, Kevin has a well-drawn relationship with his mother (Tzu-hua Ho), who loves her son and wants to talk about his concerns way more than he does.
Gao’s wife also has a complicated role as someone who has been hurt badly but wants to support her husband no matter what.  A sequence in which she purchases and subsequently uses a hammer quietly showcases the deftness in her performance, which won her an award at Taiwan’s prestigious Golden Horse Film Festival.  Hers remains the most interesting character, since she’s less a villain and more of a pragmatic and strong presence.
The dynamic between Kevin and his Principal also merits attention.  At first he admonishes Kevin for having hair a bit too well-coiffed.  Later, when they lay things out on the table, Kevin’s sexuality feels like less of an issue than we may have thought.  It, along with the presence of Kevin’s more radical, more visually out best friend, feels like Taiwanese cinema may break open even more after this.  If only the central relationship had more layers than what we’re given.
I’m having a hard time being too harsh on this film.  It means well but tackles issues we’ve seen far too often in Western culture.  In Taiwan, I’m guessing it may have had more of an impact, with stories like this rarely seen until now.  We’ve been a little spoiled, resulting in The Teacher feeling a little dated.  Still, I’m really glad it exists so that we can welcome Taiwan into the world of queer representation.  I hope we see even more subversive works from this emerging country’s queer cinema. Think of The Teacher as their An Early Frost, a little safe but brave.  One day, I hope to see their equivalent of The Living End.
