So you admit that you NEVER watched Arcane? That you instantly dismissed as garbage, sight unseen, because it was a dark, serious fantasy-drama series? Because it was based on a video game you're snobbish towards because you hate its fanbase?
Tumblr media
Uh, Lily? Mortal Kombat, Warcraft 1, Wing Commander, Tomb Raider, Resident Evil and Max Payne are FANTASTIC GAMES. They're classics for a reason. Just because they had terrible movies does not automatically make them garbage. Then again, you never even played them because anything that isn't your precious Kingdom Hearts, World Of Warcraft, Knights Of The Old Republic II, Star Wars: The Old Republic, Coffin Of Andy And Leyley, Baldur's Gate II Incest Mod is "absolute junk devoid of any merit whatsoever".
You're not a critic, you're not a taste-maker. You're a shallow, narcissistic snob.
Once more: LILY ORCHARD ADMITS SHE NEVER WATCHED ARACNE.

Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger
Orchestral music swells as we are presented with the game’s title (accompanied by a tiger’s roar) and… actor credits!? Big names too, including Tom Wilson, Malcolm McDowell, and none other than Star Wars’s Mark Hamill as the star. Before long, a giant ship emerges from a jump point. With pointed, asymmetrical edges, it’s not unlike a giant mechanical claw, and it enters orbit over the homeworld of the Kilrathi Empire: Kilrah. A Confed commando team has been captured in the Kilrathi capital, led by none other than your beloved Jeannette “Angel” Devereaux. Brought before Prince Thrakhath and the Kilrathi Emperor himself, she remains defiant. On the planet Vespus, Col. Christopher Blair (that’s you!), examines the wreck of the TCS Concordia alongside James “Paladin” Taggart. You have once more lost the carrier you called home, and there is no news of Angel’s whereabouts. Admiral Tolwyn reassigns you to the TCS Victory, an old rust bucket quite unlike the top-of-the-line Concordia. On the way over, a news broadcast states that despite Confed’s statements to the contrary, the war is going badly for humanity, with rumors of a plan for an emergency evacuation of Earth. But your assignment to the Victory will prove to be much more fateful than you initially thought…

Solid Lily: "You know what would Mortal Kombat, Warcraft 1, Wing Commander, Tomb Raider, Resident Evil and Max Payne ACTUALLY GOOD GAMES? Make them all Kingdom Hearts clones with Andy and Leyley-styled art. Plus, TONS of sister-sex minigames!"

Having played the Super Famicom and Mega CD versions of Wing Commander 1 I decided to take a bit of a breather and pop in the 3DO update of it titled Super Wing Commander for a change.
Super Wing Commander was an enhanced port of the PC version of Wing Commander released for the 3DO in 1994. This version featured, among other additions, enhanced graphics, additional missions, and voice acting. Whereas some ports of this nature go horribly wrong, Super Wing Commander is a perfect example of where an enhanced port went right.
For this rendition of the game, we get the missions of the original PC game, both Secret Missions expansion packs and a new line of missions set between the two expansions. This leaves us with a very large bank of missions to play through, each offering a varying variety of objectives, playable fighters, and enemy spacecraft to battle. Missions are played from the cockpit of your chosen space fighter. You guide the ship in three dimensions in this manner, engaging in firefights with enemy ships, escorting supply ships, or any number of other objectives.
This is all accomplished in surroundings that look very pretty. The original looked good for its time and this version has been updated to look good for its slightly later release. The cockpit you pilot from also features a number of interesting details; however this leads to one of the game’s biggest problems, in my opinion, being that this blocks a larger portion of the screen than it really should. This makes it difficult to see the action at times, but it is a small nuisance easily overcome.
The story of Super Wing Commander centers around the crew of the Tiger’s Claw, a Terran ship on the frontlines of a war between Earth and a feline alien race called the Kilrathi. Through the course of the missions, you undertake the direction of the war is determined. Complete your missions well and the Terran forces will march towards victory. Fail repeatedly and the war turns towards the Kilrathi. Added are the expansion missions, guiding the war further through so-called “secret missions” for the Terran Confederation.
This seems like a good opportunity to mention the branching mission design signature to many entries in the franchise. Missions can be completed without fully completing their objectives, leading to alternate missions as the game continues. Put simply, winning a mission completely sends you to one mission, while failing a mission will send you to a different one. This leads to multiple game paths that can be taken in the war, some ending positively and some negatively.
In conclusion, Super Wing Commander is one of the best games on the 3DO. Fans of flight simulation games will be immediately drawn to it, while those who have never tried one before will not go wrong with this one. I actually really love it as much as I love Wing Commander 3 which is also on the 3DO.
