Hey guess what!? Reblogging myself to add that I just googled this and Kathleen Wynne actually had one planned from Toronto to Windsor. It was cancelled by Ford. Cool cool cool. Love him. He's great. No complaints. Please tell me again about how Wynne is the devil incarnate and destroyed the province? Oh sorry briefly forgot women shouldn't have power I guess. Brb dying of frustration.

Last night’s election result is a nightmare for most of us and I’m sure nobody is interested in dwelling on that, but there are a few specific things I wanted to talk about, both good and bad.

Turnout

As it stands, Elections Ontario has the turnout count pegged at 43%. The ridings with the highest turnout are Huron—Bruce with 54%, and then both Niagara West and Parry Sound—Muskoka with 53%. The ridings with the lowest turnout were Kiiwetinoong with 28% (only 92% of results are in), Humber River—Black Creek with 32%, and Windsor West with 33%.

It’s impossible to gauge how many voters were discouraged from voting by polls that consistently showed the PCs with a strong advantage. We also don’t know how many people didn’t vote due to Covid-19 infection or a lack of easy access to a nearby polling station. All parties were handed a major setback yesterday when a tech issue prevented them from downloading lists of which voters had already cast a ballot and which hadn’t yet, so their ability to work strategically yesterday was limited. Regardless, 43% is a pathetic turnout rate.

It’s worth noting that the Green Party campaigned relentlessly in Parry Sound—Muskoka because, with no Liberal candidate running, they had a good chance of winning that seat. A lot of effort was made to engage with voters and win their support, both from the Greens and the incumbent PCs. Niagara West is Sam Oosterhoff’s riding, where he can mobilize a large group of supporters from his church to canvass and help people vote. Running an energetic campaign is a candidate’s job, but for the rest of us, volunteering and helping to get people to a polling station really does help. Persuading friends and family to vote helps. We’re at a disadvantage in a first past the post electoral system, so there’s zero room for apathy.

Andrea Horwath and the NDP

After four elections as leader, Andrea Horwath read the room and stepped down after running a low-energy and uninspiring campaign. In Brampton, deputy party leader Sara Singh lost her seat, as did Gurratan Singh. The PCs secured several union endorsements over the traditionally more labour-friendly NDP. The Liberals will get more attention for their trainwreck of an election, but yesterday was awful for the NDP.

With Horwath quitting, the NDP’s other deputy leader, John Vanthof, may be interested in running for the party leadership. Joel Harden and Marit Stiles are other potential contenders.

Notable losers

New Blue MPP Belinda Karahalios and New Blue leader Jim Karahalios both lost badly in Cambridge and Kitchener—Conestoga respectively. Derek Sloan also lost by a huge margin. The former Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders lost in Kathleen Wynne’s old riding.

The Liberals took the riding of Kingston and the Islands from the NDP, beating Mary Rita Holland, the former president of Ontario’s NDP. Sandeep Singh, who was controversially chosen as the NDP candidate in Brampton North over the incumbent, Kevin Yarde, also lost.

Steven Del Duca has stepped down after failing to secure party status for the Liberals or win in Vaughan—Woodbridge. After flipping from the PCs to the Liberals in 2020, MPP Amanda Simard lost her seat and two of the most well-known Liberal newbie candidates, nurse Tyler Watt and vaccination advocate Jill Promoli, also lost.

There’s not much for the PCs to be disappointed about, but their candidate in Haldimand—Norfolk lost to an independent. Former seven-term PC MPP Toby Barrett chose not to run in this election, but he endorsed his assistant Bobbi Ann Brady who was running as an independent. 

Notable winners

After narrowly losing in 2018, Chandra Pasma unexpectedly flipped Ottawa West—Nepean to the NDP. With the NDP’s only other flip, Lise Vaugeois won in Thunder Bay—Superior North.

The biggest winners are obviously the PCs. It’s rare to win a comfortable majority and then increase that majority in the next election. Opposition to Doug Ford and the PCs over the last four years has been ineffective, and we need a hard reset in terms of organization. Signing petitions, marching to Queen’s Park, and literally begging Lisa MacLeod for help has made no material difference on PC policy. I hope that the NDP will fix their deep-seated problems and set the party on a better path, but mostly I hope that people who are upset today will feel motivated to help their neighbours who will be hit hardest by four more years of PC cuts and also to join a group organizing for material and achievable wins.

Here’s an event coming up on January 12th, 2018 in Windsor, Ontario in response to companies like Tim Hortons cutting benefits from workers in response to Ontario’s minimum wage rising to $14/hour.

Information:

Effective January 1st, the minimum wage of Ontario rose from $11.60 per hour to $14.00 per hour. The increase in minimum wage to achieve a living wage has caused backlash from wealthy companies. Making the headlines, we have seen Tim Hortons heirs cut paid breaks and workers benefits - unsurprisingly, the heirs of Tim Hortons could not be reached because of their vacationing at their Florida winter home. From the Tim Hortons corporate website, "You must have $1.5million in net worth and $500,000 liquid assets in order to qualify. Financial requirements may be lower or higher depending on the transaction type" - these are NOT small business owners. We are rallying to demand an increase in pro-worker labour laws from the Wynne government - a step that could have been previously taken to prevent employers from lashing back at employees. Ontario’s Integrity Commissioner has released info about each MPP’s income, assets, and liabilities, and it’s kind of ridiculous to see how many MPPs own or partially own “investment properties” they can rent out to make more money.

The map above doesn’t even capture the full extent of what’s happening - Roman Baber and Stan Cho have three and four investment properties, respectively, in Toronto; Rudy Cuzzetto and his wife have nine, spread across Oakville, Burlington, Niagara Falls, and Montreal. In total, 17 PC MPPs own 31 investment properties, 7 NDP MPPs own 8, and 2 Liberal MPPs own 2.

That’s a huge number of landlords sitting in Queen’s Park. With home ownership being out of reach for an increasing number of people and with rent costs for retail spaces skyrocketing, especially in the GTA, it’s hard not to feel like this is a problem. Additionally, we can’t trust any of these MPPs to protect renters given that deregulation allows them to increase their profits.

Tadhg Barry is released from prison this month after serving only one quarter of his sentence, shortly after the end of a brief hunger strike.

Nine year old Frances Griffiths (1907–86) and her aunt Elsie Wright (1901–88) took the first in a series of five photographs in their garden that became rather famous. Some people accepted the images as genuine, but others believed they had been faked.

In 1985 Elsie said; 

Two village kids and a brilliant man like Conan Doyle – well, we could only keep quiet.

In the same interview Frances said;

I never even thought of it as being a fraud – it was just Elsie and I having a bit of fun and I can't understand to this day why they were taken in – they wanted to be taken in.

10 July – After the death of Willie Redmond in Flanders, a by-election is held in East Clare which is won by the Sinn Féin candidate, Éamon de Valera who received 71% of the vote in 'the most important election that has ever taken place, or ever will, in Irish history.'

12 July – Bisbee Deportation: The Phelps Dodge Corporation assembled a posse of over 2,000 men to ‘arrest’ 1,286 striking mine workers and under gunpoint load them into 23 cattle cars which took them 195 miles from Bisbee, Arizona to Hermanas, New Mexico. Phelps Dodge executives refused to let Western Union send wires out of town, and stopped Associated Press reporters from filing stories.

News of the Bisbee Deportation was made known only after an International Workers of the World (IWW) attorney, who met the train in Hermanas, issued a press release.

14 July – Cabinet decide to pursue a consistent policy of prosecuting by court martial anybody found participating in public marching and drilling (a total of 89 prisoners are committed to Irish prisons following court martial in 1917 compared to 29 people in 1916)

Hedd Wynn’s Black Chair

15 July – Welsh-language poet Hedd Wyn began composing 'Yr Arwr' (The Hero’) in October 1916, before he was forced, under the Military Conscription Act 1916, to join the army and sail to France in June 1917. He completed the ode while he was on the battlefield, and posted it back to Wales as his entry for the poetry competition at the National Eisteddfod of Wales from the village of Fléchin in northern France in July 1917. Within a few weeks, on 31 July 1917, he had also lost his life in the battle of Pilkem Ridge near Ypres.

On September 6 at the ceremony of Chairing of the Bard at the Eisteddfod, held at Birkenhead, the empty druidical chair which Wyn, as winner, should have occupied is draped in a black sheet, "The festival in tears and the poet in his grave." This becomes known as "The Eisteddfodd of the Black Chair."

31 July – Battle of Passchendaele: Allied offensive operations commence in Flanders

The 36th (Ulster) Division took part in the opening attack on the strong German positions to the east of Ypres. The heavy rain, which continued for a month, made conditions impossible

Francis Ledwidge (b. 1887), the “poet of the blackbird”, is killed by a German shell, along with five other Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, while they were working behind the lines near Boezinge. Fr. Devas, the chaplain who had given Ledwidge communion earlier in the day, wrote in his diary “Ledwidge killed, blown to bits.”

Hedd Wyn (b. 1887), Welsh poet, was one of 32,000 to die at the battle of Pilckem Ridge.

... we were going over the top at half past four. We started over Canal Bank at Ypres, and he was killed half way across Pilckem (Ridge). I've heard many say that they were with Hedd Wyn and this and that, well I was with him as a boy from Llanuwchllyn and him from Trawsfynydd. I saw him fall and I can say that it was a nosecap shell in his stomach that killed him. You could tell that. You couldn't stay with him - you had to keep going, you see.
