I have always recognized the importance of great drummers: Stewart Copeland (The Police), George Hurley (Minutemen and Firehose), and more recently Morgan Simpson (black midi). But I’ve never really gotten into the drummer AS the primary artist. Sure, there are plenty of examples: Buddy Rich, Anthony Williams, and countless others.

I don’t want to start a fight over best drummers. I simply want to acknowledge the greatness of Makaya McCraven. As usual, I’m late to this game seeing as he is several albums into his career and this is only the E & F side release of “Universal Beings.”

“Beat Science” is one of those songs that gives you an inkling of the energy that must have been present during the live recording. This is being released by International Anthem Recording Co. (Chicago).

bei dischi usciti nel 2020

A differenza dell’anno scorso, per i miei gusti nel 2020 non è uscito nessun album davvero clamoroso. O comunque non l’ho trovato.

Semplicemente capita, è fisiologico: non ho mai creduto a tutti quei discorsi “la musica sta cambiando” e via dicendo. Sì, la musica cambia, ma lo fa in continuazione e la roba figa sbuca spesso dal nulla. È un discorso diverso.

Detto questo, qualcosa di carino è sicuramente uscito in quest’anno strano complicato di merda e quindi mi va di condividere una manciata di nomi in ordine rigorosamente sparso (non me li sono preparati, li tiro fuori mentre scrivo).

Phoebe Bridgers - Punisher. Giochiamocelo subito. Non mi ha preso come mi sarei aspettato, ma è sicuramente un album maturo, ben scritto e ben suonato (ci hanno collaborato tipo 20 persone, dai Bright Eyes al completo a Nick Zinner).

Makaya McCraven ha rielaborato il grande classico di Gil Scott-Heron rendendolo un elegante gioiello “nu jazz” per niente banale.

Sul fronte post-hardcore e affini: gran bel disco dei debuttanti Dogleg (nella top 3 di quest’anno, sicuramente), mentre Lament dei Touché Amoré per me è forse il loro secondo miglior album, quindi che dire...

William Basinski praticamente ha tirato fuori un suo bignami personale, che non suona né troppo datato né “troppo moderno”. Molto bello, secondo me.

Gordi, Julianna Barwick e Adrianne Lenker sono voci che adoro e che quest’anno non mi hanno deluso; così come non mi ha deluso Kevin Morby col suo rilassante disco acustico da tramonto estivo.

Elettronica: Four Tet niente di pazzesco ma sicuramente piacevole. Lorenzo Senni non proprio roba che ascolto spesso, ma mi ha colpito.

Che altro... ah quello di Sufjan era il mio album più atteso, ma lo trovo parecchio fuori fuoco e inutile. Salvo tre-quattro canzoni davvero belle, però.

Dei Nothing invece non ricordo nemmeno un brano, così su due piedi, ma il loro è un lavoro che si apprezza nella sua completezza. Probabilmente il loro migliore.

Ah ecco... menzione per gli epic45, che da una quindicina d’anni non smettono di tirar fuori piccoli gioiellini ambient/dreampop, e per Alle Onde, l’unico disco italiano uscito quest’anno che ho ascoltato più volte.

E niente, questo è tutto. Magari inizierò a scrivere un pochino su questo tumblr, vediamo un po’ come va.

The AM: October 3, 2022

Three fairly self-contained hours this week—ambient electronics up front, shoegaze to end things off, and jazz and Latin sounds in between. The second hour is probably some of my favourite music I’ve played on the show in a while—those ‘60s and ‘70s Latin pop vibes are exactly what I need, it seems, so hopefully you feel the same. In any case, the sounds may be eclectic, but the mood is consistently dreams, so tune in and start your week right.
