“Turning Wheel” by SPELLLING
MG:
One of my least favorite parts of trauma therapy is revisiting my past and discovering all the ways I betrayed myself, how powerless and defeated I was, and sometimes all I can do is cradle myself and cry, holding the past in my arms and attempting to rock it to sleep. As sad as I am every two weeks on Fridays, there’s also the flicker of self-discovery, of learning who I am and how to respect her. This year I put two Kate Bush references on my year end longlist. The first was “Parade” by Lydia Ainsworth, and it’s still a great song that I recommend if your favorite Kate Bush makes deals with God. The other was “Turning Wheel” and much to my surprise, my favorite Kate Bush is the ghost at the window. A little part of me feels slapped across the face because “Running Up That Hill” is and always was, from the very second I heard it, a perfect, perfect song. And “Wuthering Heights” was not. I am different now, no longer a girl behind a desk, alone in a classroom full of other teenagers, and when I heard Chrystia Cabral’s clarion voice sing “Dancing/ When you’re dancing” with her signature enchantment, that little part came home. “Turning Wheel” is equal parts fantastical and practical, a song set upon a hill and starring an alchemical instrument but also a song about the wisdom of knowing where you most belong.
DV:
Maybe it’s because YouTube is currently bombarding me with ads for Get Back (2021 Peter Jackson film based on a 1970 Michael Lindsay Hogg film), but I hear a lot of The Beatles in “Turning Wheel” - from the bounce in the bassline to the concluding trumpet fanfare. I also hear some of the same questions that band ran into half a century ago. “Lay down all your weapons/ We don’t have to fight” is a beautiful sentiment, but it only works when your opponent isn’t spoiling to provoke violence. The Beatles had to record a second version of “Revolution” because Lennon couldn’t figure out how he felt about violence! And it’s telling that the question’s no easier to tackle in a pop song more than 50 years later, and that trying to sidestep it with a utopian elision like “We don’t have to fight” trips me up when I listen closely. “Turning Wheel” makes it easy not to, though. SPELLLING paint a beautiful, pastoral soundscape that compels in spite of the real world complications that it indirectly invokes, an idyllic escape from reality as long as you relax enough to meet it where it hopes to be.
