In celebration of Nonesuch Records’ 60th anniversary comes Michael Wilson / 25 Years: A Nonesuch Collection—100 box sets of 20 newly created prints from photographer Michael Wilson's Nonesuch archive, including this 2003 image of David Byrne taken in New York City. Wilson says: “We must have met, but I can’t remember anything we talked about! I can tell from the pictures that the day was bright and clear—and most likely cold. One of the pictures we made (not this one) was used on the silvery cover of David’s Grown Backwards album. This picture comes from near the end of our time together with the sun going down fast like it does in the December sky. 214: "Various Bulgarians" // Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares vol. 2

Incredibly annoying album to cite properly, I must say. Like its predecessor, Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares vol. 2 is usually credited to either the Bulgarian State Radio and Television Female Vocal Choir, who sing 10 of 17 songs collected here, or to the Swiss ethnomusicologist Marcel Cellier, who recorded most of these tracks over a 17-year period. (There is one recording of the Orchestra Yivan Kirev from ’57.) There’s a bit of an air of overaccentuated exoticism to how this stuff is packaged, from retaining the French title (with improper title casing!) for the English market release, to emphasizing Cellier’s curatorial work over that of the arrangers and performers in the narrative around the album. Realistically, we’d probably be better off crediting this one to Various Bulgarians, both for reasons of accuracy and because it’s an exceptionally melodic turn of phrase.

Listening to Le Mystère, though, I understand why those who championed this music hoped to keep it obscure. People consistently describe this stuff as sounding angelic, elven, ethereal, alien—yes, yes, yes, and yes. Wouldn’t want the realities of corrupt little Bulgaria, with its grim concerns about GDP and the Cold War, dirtying the seraphic mantle you know! The basis of these songs is not, to my ear, wildly far from the familiar choral music of Western Europe, but some combination of the brilliant syncopated vocal arrangements, the technical ability of the singers, and the Bulgarian language itself push the recordings into a realm of stranger light. The vocals often sound like the screams of beings with higher, more delicate instruments in their throats than regular humans have, and whether you envision a great stone cathedral or a starlit clearing in a pagan wood, it’s not hard to sense something holy transpiring here.

The Black Keys “El Camino” 2011. Nonesuch Records. Today, April 15th, is Keys drummer Patrick Carney’s 40th birthday (b. 1980) so I’m spinning their 7th LP, also one of their most successful (I really like it, but it’s not my favorite; I’m partial to their earlier releases). It hit #2 upon its release in the US and went to #6 in the UK and earned a Grammy for the Best Rock Album. El Camino’s lead single, “Lonely Boy” went to #64 in the US on the Hot 100 chart but went to #1 on the alternative charts and to #1 on the rock chart and won Grammy’s for Best Rock Performance and Best Rock Song; it’s a great rocker filled with infectious hooks, super radio-friendly. Also released as singles were “Gold on the Ceiling” (which I really like) which hit #94 on the Hot 100 and #1 on the alternative chart, “Dead and Gone” (Europe only; it’s a fine song but there are better on the LP) and “Little Black Submarines” (#2 alternative chart) which is my favorite track on El Camino. I love the quiet acoustic melancholy bluesy ballad start that explodes into a massive rocker, reminiscent of a good old Zeppelin track that has jock-rock” guitar jams (Dan Auerbach’s words, not mine) mixed with garage rock/punk blues rhythm. I also really like the groovin’ “Money Maker” with its 60′s style garage rock melodic beat and “Stop Stop” that also has a 60′s vibe, but it’s a more psychedelic mixed with soul 60′s. Produced (and largely co-written) by Danger Mouse, El Camino is way slicker than their early super-lo-fi releases, so of course it sounds better but it does lose that DIY charm.

This 20 minute beast of a track is one of those bits of audio that's so intense and striking that I can't tell whether or not I've heard it before. I remember the first time I heard Gwen Stefani's Sweet Escape, I was convinced Akon's "wee-oohs" were a sample from some 60s Beach Boys-type rock group. Similarly, this Indonesian Monkey Chant feels straight out of a 2000s party anthem, you can almost hear Pitbull yelling "Mr. Worldwide!" Sometimes a song just hits you square on and blows past quaint notions like memory, history, time, space.

Listening to this in the car, my daughter asked what instrument they were using. It's vocals! The alpha and omega of instruments.

SHOW PREVIEW: Angel Olsen at Lincoln Theatre

Angel Olsen is set to play at Lincoln Theatre on November 1, 2019, the third night of a 30-show North American tour with Vagabon. This will be Olsen’s first tour in two years, last having played in DC at 9:30 Club in 2017 following the release of her breakout 2016 album, My Woman.

Olsen is a St. Louis, MI native, currently based in Asheville, NC. Once pigeonholed as a melancholy folk artist, over the last decade she evolved, one release at a time, into a bonafide rock’n’roller. She writes songs that are dreamy yet have a bite to them, rooted in the sounds of ‘50s and ‘60s rock music yet still tied, loosely at times, to her folk roots. Her songs are filled with such an honesty of emotion that it sometimes hurts to listen — and yet it is often hard to resist dancing along as her tracks build from softly crooning vocals into a crescendo of shredding guitar and the full power of her voice lets loose. Olsen’s voice feels almost like it belongs in another era, yet her music is contemporary in a way that seems it will never grow old. She is positioned to become a new classic in the rock world, having released music to critical and popular acclaim through the better part of a decade. Olsen made a name for herself with My Woman, released on big deal indie label Jagjaguwar, and followed it with the beautiful collection Phases in 2017. Though she has not released anything since Phases, this tour hints at new material on the horizon with the announcement video containing a snippet of an unreleased song that growls beneath the video.

From folk to folk-rock to rock’n’roll, Angel Olsen never fails to captivate. Her astounding ability to capture emotion in the songs she writes and the stories she tells within them are rooted in a deep connection to what makes people tick, what makes them hurt, what draws them together, and tears them apart. This rooting in the humanity of her music can, too, be traced through the work of special guest on tour with Olsen, Vagabon, the project of Brooklyn based artist Laetitia Tamko. Vagabon explores space, memory, and self on songs that range from so tender they threaten to fall apart to moments of shredding guitar that could cut down anything in their path. All the Women in Me, Vagabon’s newly announced follow up to her 2017 debut, Infinite Words, is out September 27, 2019 on Nonesuch.

Announcing: Offa Rex

Adored Mailing List Recipients,

The disembodied entity who typically writes these missives is on vacation; this is being written by me, Colin Meloy. And I want to bend your ear about something.

A few years ago, I had a chance to hear a record by a fantastic artist, one Olivia Chaney. She made a record called The Longest River and I was so taken by it, particularly her arrangement of the old folk song “The False Bride.” She seemed to me to be channeling the great female folk singers of the British folk revival: Sandy Denny, Anne Briggs, June Tabor, Norma & Lal Waterson, Shirley Collins and Maddy Prior. We invited her to open a bunch of Decemberists shows in 2015 and afterward I made a pitch to her: let us be the Albion Dance Band to your Shirley Collins. Let’s start a band. Let’s make a record of old folk songs that will be as much about rediscovering ancient songs as it is an homage to that incredible era of British music, the 60s and 70s folk revival.

She, very kindly, agreed.

And so we Decemberists are very proud to announce the arrival of OFFA REX, our collaboration between the band and Olivia Chaney.

We rehearsed and arranged the songs out on my farm outside of Portland last summer; we recorded it with Tucker Martine at Flora Recording & Playback that fall. I sing two songs, Olivia sings eight of ’em. One of the songs is an instrumental medley of two old Morris dance tunes, arranged by Jenny on accordion. Here’s the track listing:

You can listen to “The Queen of Hearts,” a song we learned from Martin Carthy, here. It’s about heartbreak in the face of unrequited love; to my ears it’s as fresh today as it was when it was written three hundred years ago. That’s kind of the spirit of the record.

Offa Rex will be playing a pair of shows in Portland and New York City in late July, leading into XPoNential Festival in Philadelphia and Newport Folk Festival. We’re also playing Travelers’ Rest, the festival the band is hosting in Missoula, Montana in August.

Well be performing songs from the record as well as songs from the Olivia Chaney and Decemberists catalogues, reimagined through the lens of Offa Rex.

And expect to see Offa Rex appear, mid-set, for a couple songs when Olivia opens The Decemberists’ summer tour dates. You can find all of the details below.

Este fin de semana Fleet Foxes estrenaron una de las canciones de “Crack-Up”, que va a ser su tercer LP, y primero en 6 años, y lo va a sacar Nonesuch exactamente dentro de un mes, 16-6-2017.

Me gusta este “Fool´s Errand”, es muy sesentas, hasta un poco beat, pero no 60´s de libro sino más a su aire. En abierto y sin renunciar a las sonoridades folk y country que les hicieron célebres hace unos años. 

Es una de las nuevas 11 canciones que ha firmado el líder Robin Pecknold para la reentré discográfica de la banda de Seattle.

El regreso de Fleet Foxes debería ser prácticamente una maravilla habida cuenta de los exagerados plazos de tiempo entre disco y disco. Más les vale.
