I think you might appreciate this summary of all the jewelry worn by all the non-British royals at Chuck’s shindig? https://www.thecourtjeweller.com/2023/05/foreign-royal-jewels-with-another-secret-tiara-moment-at-the-coronation-of-king-charles-iii-and-queen-camilla.html
As much as I dislike the Windsors, man, what a fascinating article to read. For those who are also iffy on the British Royalty, the article is about the foreign royals invited to the event and some of them are a) hot as fuck and b) wearing gorgeous jewelry.
Also I sent this to my mother, who loves all things royalty regardless of who or where, and she was DELIGHTED. We agreed the Queen of Eswatini is wearing what mushrooms would look like if they were a dress, but also that it's a gorgeous dress and she's wearing the hell out of it.
I was bummed to discover the Crown Princess of Greece brought a clutch shaped like a book rather than bringing an actual book.
(Michaelis brought a book to Gregory's coronation. Well, the thing is HOURS long and he was seated where nobody could see him. It was Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.)
Royal jewelry is an insane rabbit hole to climb down -- the last time I was looking up royals, because my parents decided to switch allegiance from the British to the Norwegians, who are more attractive and less....Like That, I found this messageboard that I still check regularly because it's fascinating.

White Bears
So the other day I was flipping through my Kay Nielsen-illustrated “East of the Sun and West of the Moon” collection with my mom, because she’d never seen the illustrations before, and they’re some of my favorites. And we weren’t actually reading the stories this time; we were just there to look at pretty pictures.
The book starts with the titular “East of the Sun, West of the Moon,” and therefore some illustrations of white bears. And then we keep going through a few more pages, and suddenly there’s another illustration of a white bear, and at this point I’m thinking “oh, right, ‘White Bear King Valemon.’ Huh. It’s kinda strange that there would be two Norwegian enchanted bridegroom stories where the bridegroom is specifically a white bear.”
And then I flip to the next page, and, granted, at this time I haven’t read “White Bear King Valemon” in a few years, but the next illustration was not at all consistent with what I remembered. So I went back a few pages to discover that this set of white bear illustrations was actually for “The Blue Belt,” and this collection didn’t even include “White Bear King Valemon.”
So let’s talk today about the enchanted bridegroom subset “white bears in Norway.”
Now, the reason I'd forgotten about the white bear bit of "The Blue Belt" is that it's largely inconsequential, just another crazy element in a story packed with crazy. The main character is never actually turned into a bear, but does convincingly disguise himself as one to meet the princess he loves in secret, allowing him to collect insider information to win her hand. The main thing about this story is that, as irrelevant as his white bear disguise is to the plot as a whole, it has resulted in a couple of fantastic illustrations that can easily be used for bear-based enchanted bridegroom stories. But primarily we're here to talk about "East of the Sun, West of the Moon" and "White Bear King Valemon," which are very similar but also completely distinct stories. You can read all about "East-West" here, and this post will be mainly running through how "King Valemon" is different and why we care.
So first off, this is another of those stories where youngest kid is best kid and therefore wins, and specifically the kind of story where it's not something you really want to win - in this case, the right to be kidnapped by a polar bear. All three sisters are princesses, and the bear deemed the older two unworthy to be kidnapped, possibly because they had brains in their heads, which our girl does not seem to.
Bear whisks girl away to palace, joins her in bed at night in human form. And, okay. Remember how in "East of the Sun, West of the Moon," the girl and the enchanted bear have to share a bed for a year, and we really don't know exactly what all they're doing in that bed?
In "White Bear King Valemon," we know exactly what they're doing, and it's exactly what you think. She lives with the bear for three years, and in that time she has three babies. All of whom the bear whisks away immediately. Which, dude, yikes.
I mean, ambiguous bed-sharing with a stranger for one year is already a little, um...well. But getting knocked up by a stranger? Three times? And having all the babies kidnapped by the same white bear who kidnapped you? Who you may or may not have gathered by now is also the stranger who knocked you up? (My money's on not gathering that, because our girl doesn't strike me as the brightest, so far.) Again, yikes. I'm just, like, I'm at a loss for words. "Yikes" is all I've got, guys.
Why does she keep having sex with this man? Does she have a choice? Is this consensual? Why isn't she questioning this man about what on earth is going on here? Why is she not having an enormous fight with the bear and demanding her children back? Why is she allowing herself to become pregnant again when she knows that the baby is going to be taken away by the bear? What does she even think the bear is doing with the babies?
There comes a time when you just have to say, okay, either the sex stops or we explore period-appropriate alternatives to birth control, because I refuse to bring another child into this world to be eaten by a bear.
After three years and three stolen babies, the girl convinces the bear to let her visit home. Where her mom does the whole "You're doing what? With who? You haven't even seen his face?" bit, only she's even more justified in her concern than the East-West mom, because her daughter is reproducing with this man and then allowing her grandbabies to be taken away and possibly eaten by a talking bear. Like, yes, mom, you tell her; she should absolutely be gathering more information about this situation. There is a time and a place to go with the flow, and that is not here and now, sweetheart.
So she goes back with the white bear and lights her little candle, and he wakes up when the tallow drips on him and acts like this is some great betrayal, and not the sensible thing she should have done two and a half years ago when she realized she was pregnant the first time.
He is, like in East-West, just one month from the curse being broken, and I would like to just take a moment to say that is not fair, the troll who cursed him is not playing by the rules, everyone knows the time frame in situations like this is a year and a day, what is this slightly over three years crap?
Bear switches from hot guy back to bear and runs off to where he's supposed to meet the troll or whatever, idk - the girl grabs his fur and tries to go with him, but falls off in the forest somewhere.
She does her best to catch up with him on foot, and on the way she meets three little girls, living with three old women, and each of these girls gives her a gift; these gifts are what she will trade to the troll for three nights with the white bear - well, with King Valemon, now that his bear-curse is over. He's drugged on the first two nights, and they can finally talk on the third, just like in East-West. But instead of Fun With Laundry, in this story they make a trap door for the troll to fall through when she's walking down the aisle. Which. Lame.
With the troll handled, King Valemon takes our girl home, but on the way we stop to collect the three little girls who helped her. Because those are their kids, who he, get this, "had taken so they could aid in her quest." The quest that didn't exist yet at the time, because he hadn't been taken by the troll yet, and had no reason yet to suspect that she would look at his face - I mean, the girl was having babies with him and not bothering about the face, so I would have considered it a safe bet that she would continue not bothering, and taking the babies was definitely overkill.
Also, like. She lived with him for three years and had three babies. After three years, she visits her parents, and then she looks at him with the candle; this all seems to happen pretty quickly. Which means the oldest girl might, maybe, possibly be as old as three, but probably she's younger. We should have an age range of infant to toddler here. And yet all three are described as little girls, not babies, and all three seem able to effectively communicate. So that's a bit of a plot hole. Gotta love timeline inconsistency.
In conclusion: "East of the Sun, West of the Moon"? Beautiful, meaningful story, perfect, magnificent, 25 out of ten. "White Bear King Valemon?" Garbage story full of garbage characters who make garbage decisions, not worth the paper it's printed on, only redeeming feature is mom not putting up with her daughter's absolute idiocy.

'Frozen 2' has a secret weapon: singer Aurora
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/be9955a3d847cb8f792c15df614bd420/bf25922967c64f52-7d/s540x810/5b36b3f76babe1fff1659e2a4179f66bb0ec10cc.jpg)
Interview by Johnny Oleksinski for New York Post (November 21st, 2019).
She shares a name with the main character from “Sleeping Beauty,” and she’s one-half of the northern lights. All things considered, the singer Aurora would seem the perfect fit for Disney’s “Frozen 2” — the woman’s Norwegian, for Thor’s sake! — in which she duets with Idina Menzel on the movie’s showstopper, “Into the Unknown.”
But the 23-year-old isn’t a Broadway-star-turned-cartoon-princess, a la Judy Kuhn (Pocahontas), Lea Salonga (Jasmine and Mulan) and Jodi Benson (Ariel in “The Little Mermaid”). Her music, including “Running With the Wolves” and “Murder Song (5, 4, 3, 2, 1),” is earthy and dark. She’s covered David Bowie and names Leonard Cohen and Enya among her musical influences. “Hallelujah” is not exactly “Be Our Guest.”
Au contraire, insists Aurora. She and the House of Mouse are actually on the very same storybook page.
“I always liked, as a child, that Disney movies were not afraid to be sad or horrible,” she tells The Post by phone from Oslo, Norway. “I hate movies that clearly underestimate children, and I love the fact that, throughout the years, Disney has not.”
She’s right. From Bambi’s mom to Elsa fleeing her lifelong home, Disney has rarely let its protagonists take the happy-go-lucky road. Aurora’s favorite movie as a child was “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” about a man ostracized from society for his looks.

“I feel like I would really get along with Quasimodo up there,” she says. “He would be a really true friend to me.”
In “Frozen 2,” out Friday, the mature conflict comes in the form of a siren call in the distance, beckoning Elsa to leave her Arendelle kingdom and discover the secrets of her past. That’s when she sings “Into the Unknown,” with Aurora providing the haunting “Ah-ah-ah-ah!” we hear during the song and throughout the film.

“Into the Unknown,” from the “Frozen 2“ soundtrack, featuring Aurora.
“t was like a puzzle . . . falling together,” she says. “It felt right for me to be a part of that, because I’m a big supporter of following your instincts.”
That confidence has served her well. Aurora Aksnes, who started singing at age 6, dropped her debut album, “All My Demons Greeting Me as a Friend,” in 2016 at just 19 years old. She also found a famous fan in Katy Perry. In 2015, the “Firework” singer tweeted, “Finally. New music that makes my heart a flutter.”
Around the same time, Tom MacDougall, executive vice president of music at Disney, was smitten too. And on the lookout for exciting new talent.
“She’s incredible, isn’t she?” says MacDougall, who’s helped shape the sound of the studio’s films going all the way back to “The Lion King.” “She’s sort of Björk-ish in that, ‘Wow. I haven’t seen anything like this before’ way.”
MacDougall first saw Aurora perform during an artist showcase five years ago, and thought there was something about this intriguing performer with an impressive range that could be a good fit for Disney. He eventually had her record a cover of “Baby Mine,” used in the 2019 “Dumbo” trailer. And then the perfect project came along — the Scandinavia-inspired “Frozen 2.”
“Knowing that was she Norwegian, I thought, ‘Well, who knows?’ At that point the character didn’t exist, but she was an interesting artist,” he says. “When this character came up — this voice — I pitched Aurora.
“It was a no-brainer. She had to be our voice.”
Aurora thought so too. Besides the movie’s strong message, the singer loved the ties to her culture, and the spectacular depictions of nature, which she says look just like Norway. Aurora grew up in the faraway town of Os, surrounded by forests where she spent much of her days. The outdoors are still important to her.
Menzel and Aurora harmonize to make a sumptuous sound, but the two performers never set foot in the same recording studio. Aurora recorded her part over two days in London, while Menzel set her track stateside. Not sure of what to expect, experiencing the finished product was an emotional experience for Aurora.
“I got goosebumps, which I don’t often get,” she says of watching the film. “Seeing something you know will be so important for so many children all over the world . . . It’s a really special thing.”
Aurora, who also produces her own music, has a full dance card. She released her second studio album, “A Different Kind of Human (Step 2),” in June, and has already begun working on her next one, with two more in mind. She also wants to try her hand at acting and filmmaking. Her restlessness to try scary new things is a lot like Elsa’s.
“I barely can sleep!” she says.

Chapter II: Fake It Until You Make It
It hadn't taken too long before Elsa felt the hope fading away. As she approached the Hufflepuff table, panic rose again in her belly at the realization that people sat way too close to each other and there was no way around it since the number of chairs seemed to be close to the number of students. Someone might end up touching her, which wasn't something she had been prepared to see happening.
Even if her ice powers weren't dark, they could still hurt people. In the past three years, the girl had been touched only by her parents. Since her magic had been growing more and more out of control, she had started considering it dangerous to be even in the same room as other people. Despite her concerns, both her mother and her father had still been able to soothe her into a hug sometimes, but Elsa never allowed herself in situations in which accidental touching could happen.
This time, however, there was no escape from the fact that she had to sit right beside the other Hufflepuff students. So, clenching her hands in front of her chest, the girl resumed her walk and offered the others the tense smile she usually reserved for her parents' political acquaintances that had insisted on meeting her in the past. To Elsa's immense relief, they turned their attention back to the hat as soon as the next student got sorted.
Elsa herself directed her eyes toward the hat, but she wasn't paying attention. What would she do if people wanted to shake hands with her? So far, her gloves had been a rather safe barrier to her magic, but what would happen if she completely lost control? What if she hurt someone? Would they be able to fix it as easily as Dumbledore had guaranteed they would, back when he first came to visit her in Arendelle? Would the teachers and other students judge her for her lack of control?
Trying not to succumb to panic, Elsa did her best to act natural, clapping whenever someone was sorted to Hufflepuff. It all seemed to last an eternity and the girl couldn't help but hope the feast would be over as soon as possible. Dumbledore had warned her that she would be sharing a dormitory with the other girls in her house and year. Each bed was surrounded by a curtain, however, to give the students some privacy; so, the princess was hopeful that she would be able to put some space between herself and the others once she arrived there.
Finally, Lars Westley was sorted into Ravenclaw and Professor McGonagall took the hat away, putting an end to the ceremony. At that, as if following a script, the Headmaster raised from his seat, his gaze wandering through the hall and arms wide open as if he wished to embrace each and every one of his students. His warm eyes met Elsa's for a moment, making the girl feel a little calmer—Dumbledore seemed to have an aura around him that would always make the girl feel safe.
"Welcome to one more year at Hogwarts. Before you dig into this excellent banquet, I'd like to say a few words. First, meet your new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher: Professor Scamander." A red-haired man in his late early fifties rose from his seat, bending his head and raising one hand in response to the welcome applause he received from the students and the staff.
Watching the new professor, she realized he was rather nervous, his face slightly reddened by the attention. Er han sjenert? Hearing her classmates talking about his reaction, she realized she hadn't been the only one to notice how shy the man was. "It's rather cute, isn't it?" A blonde girl sitting across the table told the brunette beside her.
Dumbledore only restarted speaking when the claps died and the professor was once again sitting, "also, I should warn you that three more items have been added to the banned list— you will find it hanging beside the door of Mr. Filch's office— and that the Dark Forest is off-limits to all of the students." He made a small pause to allow the students to process the information. "Now— shall we dig in?"
Elsa turned to look at the dishes in front of her and was astonished to realize they were now full of all sorts of food. She was relieved to realize that some of it were rather familiar; the girl hadn't been worried about the British eating habits until she had come across the snacks they sold on the train. That had seemed to be a minor concern in comparison to the language barrier and her ability to accidentally freeze things.
Being the crown princess, Elsa had eaten some foreign food before with the children of dignitaries or rulers of other countries. Learning how to please and entertain guests on such occasions, sometimes even going as far as pretending to like a dish, had been one of the first lessons in a princess' curriculum.
The notion that she would have to eat that every day and night while at school hadn't crossed her mind, however, until she was on her way to Hogwarts. The shock of learning about the candies and snacks, so different from what she usually ate at home, came with one more wave of anxiety that she had only been able to put aside as she saw the castle for the first time.
It was, therefore, with a heavy sigh of relief that she reached out to help herself with peas, carrots, mashed potatoes, and a type of roasted meat that seemed to be beef. It was a slow process, considering that she had to be careful not to touch the people beside her and that she had been trained to avoid messes at all costs.
Although she managed to serve herself without issues, people noticed her slowness as they waited for her to finish. Despite her upbringing, the girl had never felt comfortable being the center of attention and flushed furiously when she realized that there were other children watching her.
"Do you have a contagious skin disease or something?" The blonde girl in front of her asked with intense curiosity. The blunt question had been made in such an innocent manner, however, that Elsa wondered if she had understood it correctly or if there was a hidden meaning in the words that, being not British herself, she couldn't grasp. "I mean— it is kind of hot to be wearing gloves, isn't it?"
Oh. The gloves. Of course. No Norwegian would wear gloves in England during the summer— her father had told her that in an attempt to convince her not to wear them at all. After Dumbledore's reassurance that they could take care of repercussions if Elsa lost control over her powers, the King had been trying to talk her into putting them aside while she was at Hogwarts. At that time, the girl hadn't thought much of his comment as she usually felt no cold nor heat. She hadn't realized, though, that people would find it strange.
"No, it are— is a family tradition." It was easier, she realized, to lie in her broken version of the English language than it would have been in Norwegian. Elsa had no clue why, but, although there was a hint of curiosity in her mind, she was too focused on trying to interact with the other children without making a mess of herself to pay attention to her mind's curious behavior.
"That is mean, though," a voice coming from Elsa's left stated, making her flinch in concern. Had she offended her classmates? Was it because she hadn't greeted and introduced herself first? How could have she forgotten that? What would her parents have said if they had seen her at that moment? They would be angry, for sure; as they had been when, a few months before the accident that had changed their lives, Anna had pointed out that the Danish ambassador had "fake hair".
Elsa's thoughts were interrupted, however, at the sight of the blonde girl's cheek reddening. "I'm sorry. I was curious, that's all." As the princess was too shocked to reply, the other seemed to take the silence as a sign of disapproval and grow even more uncomfortable. "My mum— well, she's always saying I should think before saying things. I am Arcadia, by the way, Adie for short."
"'Must be a mum thing, 'cause mine also says this sort of stuff all the time to me," the person sitting beside Elsa— much to her surprise, a pink-haired girl—replied with a groan and the blonde, Adie, seemed to relax a little at the sound. "I'm Tonks. You're Elsa, right?" Without a warning, she took Elsa's hand to shake it. Before the princess could feel fright, though, it was over as the other was already retreating.
"Ja—" the princess was too astonished by the variety of emotions and situations that had been passing in the past few seconds to even consider replying to the other two in English. Her hands were visibly shaking, but Elsa was too astonished for a moment to try and make them stop. No stranger had ever touched or talked to her so unceremoniously; even Dumbledore had treated her with a level of deference—not as much as the tutors her parents had hired before, but much more than the other Hufflepuff girls were showing.
It had been agreed that, while it wasn't properly a secret, her royal background shouldn't be common knowledge among the other students. Dumbledore had told the King and Queen of Arendelle that the people in the wizarding world didn't always comprehend the non-magical government. Even those who did understand it, however, wouldn't answer to it since Wizards and Witches had their own sort of government.
A few weeks after Dumbledore's visit, the monarchs of Arendelle received the visit of both the Arendellian Ministers for Magic Tharald Lund and his British counterpart Millicent Bagnold. Elsa never learned exactly what they had been discussing with the King and the Queen before she was called to meet them since all of the adults ceased to talk when she walked into the throne room and her parents had told her she was too young to fully understand the conversation.
Elsa was intelligent and had enough political instruction, however, to figure that there had been a firm understanding between all the parts that it would be better if the crown princess had her magical education far from Arendelle. It didn't take long before she realized that the heir to the Arendellian throne studying magic in a Scandinavian country could cause some political conflicts in both the wizarding and the non-magical world.
It was no wonder, then, that Tonks and Adie had been treating Elsa in such an informal manner. There was no way they would know they had been speaking to the future Queen of Arendelle—if they did allow her to inherit the crown, in the first place. If the insistence of Minister Lund for her to study at a foreign magic school was any indication of the political nightmare that she had become, Elsa was certain that she would be encouraged to abdicate.
"You're not from here, are you?" Adie asked again, sending an apologetic glance to the other two girls that expressed the internal conflict between her curiosity and her desire to respect people's boundaries. It was a rather familiar gesture to Elsa, who had seen it whenever Anna woke her up in the middle of the night to invite her to play or talk. The warmth that followed this realization made the girl come to the conclusion that she actually liked Adie.
"I am from Arendelle. It is North from Norway." Even as she spoke the words, the girl already knew the phrasing wasn't quite right. Her knowledge in foreign languages was above average in comparison to people of her own age, but there was a long way to go, however, before she could be considered fluent in them. Optimistic, the King had told her she spoke as well as any native in no time and, while the girl had trouble believing him, she hoped he was right. As they were, her English pronunciation and wording would attract too much attention, which was the last thing Elsa wanted.
She also didn't want to make friends. Between her ice magic and status as royalty, there was much that Elsa felt compelled to hide from her peers. The closer they were to her, the harder it would be to keep this information to herself and the more likely she would hurt them—and herself. Although she liked the way Adie reminded her of Anna, even though Tonks had been nice enough to come to rescue her, becoming friends with them could make her life even more difficult than it already was.
How was she sorted into Hufflepuff, anyway, when all she had done in the past three years was lying to the person she loved the most? What had gone through the hat's mind to place her in the house that valued honesty and fair play, when her intentions from even before she had first set foot in the castle had been to hide who she was? Was it because the hat had thought she belonged to nowhere at all and Hufflepuff was the one to accept people who didn't fit in the houses? That would make sense.
In terror, Elsa realized her gloves had started feeling small due to the thick layer of ice between her fingers and the fabric. Between Tonks' touch, Adie's questions, and the knowledge of her self-imposed isolation—as well as the trouble it could cause to her—, the princess was the closest she had been to losing control ever since the few days after the accident with Anna. She had never liked being under the spotlight, but it was even worst when she was far away from everything and everyone she knew.
"Elsa? Are you okay?" The princess looked up to face a growing frown on Tonks' face. By her expression, it was clear that she had been far too distracted to notice the other girls' previous words to her. Adie, the princess noticed with the corner of her eyes, was watching her carefully.
Clenching her hands, Elsa tried to control the flow of emotions rushing through her body and the magic flooding from the tip of her fingers. Conceal, don't feel, her father's words were grounding and calming even when she spoke them inside her own mind. To other people, the mantra might have sounded cold-hearted and unhelpful, but, to the princess, it meant pretending everything was fine until it was, faking control and self-restraint to the point it came naturally to her.
"I am sorry. What said you?" Elsa tried not to worry if Tonks or Adie would end up asking her what she had been thinking about. Overthinking would always work against her; it only served for her to suffer twice. Conceal, don't feel. Hide your fears under a mask of confidence, don't panic. Fake it until you make it.
Much to her relief, Tonks made no comment about her distraction. "Not much, actually. I was saying that I haven't heard about it," the pink-haired shrugged and offered Elsa a kind smile before turning to Adie. "What about you, Adie? Where are you from?" The princess sighed, feeling her body relax when the other blonde started telling them about her childhood in Cornwall.
Elsa was smart enough to know that Tonks had diverged the focus of the conversation from her to Adie on purpose. The pink-haired girl had noticed she was uncomfortable with the attention and had distracted the other girl with a topic that would keep her from inquiring further on the princess' background and mannerisms. It was a very insightful approach from an eleven-year-old, one that adult politicians and ambassadors had often failed to master.
Paying half-attention to the conversation around her, Elsa tried to eat some of the food on her plate. Adie's parents, she found out soon enough, were both magical, although her mother was a muggle-born; the girl had two younger siblings: a brother and a sister. Tonks, on the other hand, had been raised as an only child in Somerset by her magical parents.
Every time Adie turned to Elsa and opened her mouth to inquire about something, Tonks intervened before the question was made. After a few minutes of tension, the princess finally started relaxing and the food became more and more delicious. The conversation around her was friendly, the first-years getting to know each other or asking questions to older students. Elsa was beginning to understand how one's house became their family when they were at school.
It was funny how different these people were. While the school tried to assemble them and label them, it took only a couple of hours for Elsa to realize they couldn't be more distinct and start questioning the whole notion of sorting students into a house. As informative as the book was, "Hogwarts, a History" had failed to point out the problems that this system could cause. People, the princess concluded, were too complex to fit labels.
Despite her deep thoughts and criticism, however, Elsa did appreciate what she was eating. The flavors were rather unfamiliar, but the contrast to what she usually had at home hadn't been unwelcome. The princess wasn't picky, but foreign dishes were sometimes unpalatable; so, the knowledge that the food in Hogwarts was actually tasty was a relief. One less thing to worry about.
Finally, the girl set her fork back on her plate, wondering when they would be allowed to the dormitories. Her belly full and her mind as relaxed as it could be when she was surrounded by hundreds of people, Elsa was starting to feel drowsy. It had been a long and difficult day, but things didn't turn out as bad as she had first thought they would. After all, she hadn't cursed anybody.
In a few weeks, her parents' Council would find a way to remove her from Hogwarts and Elsa would be back to where she belonged. All she had to do until then was to keep her head low: stay away from trouble, draw no attention to herself, make no friends, keep control over her magic. Be patient, calm, and sober. Smart. Conceal, don't feel.

Changed Pronouns Hamlet
So I wanted to see what a classic story like Hamlet would be like if all the male characters were female and vice versa. So I just took the Wikipedia summary, and changed only the names and pronouns. The results really interested me, and I think this would be a very epic play... Disclaimers: 1. I changed some of the names more than others, mainly because some of them were so ingrained in my head as one gender or another that I needed to distance myself further from that association. 2. I chose to go with the name ‘Amla’ as a feminized tribute to the original historical Prince Amleth, on whom Hamlet is based. 3. I chose to use binary male/female genders for this experiment because I wanted to explore the contrasts and stereotypes of the roles that we expect binary male and female characters in literature to fulfill. (The only gender neutral change I made was to change ‘What a piece of work is a man’ to ‘humanity’ instead, since it is used in a gender neutral way in the play. I am aware that this would necessitate further challenges with the wordplay on ‘man’ that follows in the actual script, but this change suffices for now.) All that to say, non-binary version of this story or of some of the characters therein would also be epic as well, and if you write that one I would love to read it.
Act I
The protagonist of Amla is Princess Amla of Denmark, daughter of the recently deceased Queen Amla, and niece of Queen Claudia, her mother's sister and successor. Claudia hastily married Queen Amla's widower, Gerald, Amla's father, and took the throne for herself. Denmark has a long-standing feud with neighbouring Norway, in which Queen Amla slew Queen Floria of Norway in a battle some years ago. Although Denmark defeated Norway and the Norwegian throne fell to Queen Floria's infirm sister, Denmark fears that an invasion led by the dead Norwegian queen's daughter, Princess Floria, is imminent.
On a cold night on the ramparts of Elsinore, the Danish royal castle, the sentries Bernadette and Marcella discuss a ghost resembling the late Queen Amla which they have recently seen, and bring Princess Amla's friend Hanna as a witness. After the ghost appears again, the three vow to tell Princess Amla what they have witnessed.
As the court gathers the next day, while Queen Claudia and King Gerald discuss affairs of state with their elderly adviser Polina, Amla looks on glumly. During the court, Claudia grants permission for Polina's daughter Laetitia to return to school in France and sends envoys to inform the Queen of Norway about Floria. Claudia also scolds Amla for continuing to grieve over her mother and forbids her to return to her schooling in Wittenberg. After the court exits, Amla despairs of her mother's death and her father's hasty remarriage. Learning of the ghost from Hanna, Amla resolves to see it herself.
As Polina's daughter Laetitia prepares to depart for a visit to France, Polina offers her advice that culminates in the maxim "to thine own self be true.” Polina's son, Orpheus, admits his interest in Amla, but Laetitia warns him against seeking the princess' attention, and Polina orders him to reject her advances. That night on the rampart, the ghost appears to Amla, telling the princess that she was murdered by Claudia and demanding that Amla avenge her. Amla agrees, and the ghost vanishes. The princess confides to Hanna and the sentries that from now on she plans to "put an antic disposition on", or act as though she has gone mad, and forces them to swear to keep her plans for revenge secret; however, she remains uncertain of the ghost's reliability.
Act II
Soon thereafter, Orpheus rushes to his mother, telling her that Amla arrived at his door the prior night half-undressed and behaving erratically. Polina blames love for Amla's madness and resolves to inform Claudia and Gerald. As she enters to do so, the Queen and King finish welcoming Rosaline and Genevieve, two student acquaintances of Amla, to Elsinore. The royal couple has requested that the students investigate the cause of Amla's mood and behaviour. Additional news requires that Polina wait to be heard: messengers from Norway inform Claudia that the Queen of Norway has rebuked Princess Floria for attempting to re-fight her mother's battles. The forces that Floria had conscripted to march against Denmark will instead be sent against Poland, though they will pass through Danish territory to get there.
Polina tells Claudia and Gerald her theory regarding Amla's behaviour and speaks to Amla in a hall of the castle to try to uncover more information. Amla feigns madness and subtly insults Polina all the while. When Roseline and Genevieve arrive, Amla greets her "friends" warmly but quickly discerns that they are spies. Amla admits that she is upset at her situation but refuses to give the true reason, instead commenting on "What a piece of work is humanity". Roseline and Genevieve tell Amla that they have brought along a troupe of actors that they met while traveling to Elsinore. Amla, after welcoming the actors and dismissing her friends-turned-spies, asks them to deliver a soliloquy about the death of the Queen and King at the climax of the Trojan War. Impressed by their delivery of the speech, she plots to stage The Murder of Gonzaga, a play featuring a death in the style of her mother's murder and to determine the truth of the ghost's story, as well as Claudia’s guilt or innocence, by studying Claudia's reaction.
Act III
Polina forces Orpheus to return Amla's love letters and tokens of affection to the princess while she and Claudia watch from afar to evaluate Amla's reaction. Amla is walking alone in the hall as the Queen and Polina await Orpheus's entrance, musing whether "to be or not to be". When Orpheus enters and tries to return Amla's things, Amla accuses him of immodesty and cries "get thee to a monastery", though it is unclear whether this, too, is a show of madness or genuine distress. Her reaction convinces Claudia that Amla is not mad for love. Shortly thereafter, the court assembles to watch the play Amla has commissioned. After seeing the Player Queen murdered by her rival pouring poison in her ear, Claudia abruptly rises and runs from the room; for Amla, this is proof positive of her aunt's guilt.
Gerald summons Amla to his chamber to demand an explanation. Meanwhile, Claudia talks to herself about the impossibility of repenting, since she still has possession of her ill-gotten goods: her sister's crown and husband. She sinks to her knees. Amla, on her way to visit her father, sneaks up behind her but does not kill her, reasoning that killing Claudia while she is praying will send her straight to heaven while her mother's ghost is stuck in purgatory. In the King's bedchamber, Amla and Gerald fight bitterly. Polina, spying on the conversation from behind a tapestry, calls for help as Gerald, believing Amla wants to kill him, calls out for help himself.
Amla, believing it is Claudia, stabs wildly, killing Polina, but she pulls aside the curtain and sees her mistake. In a rage, Amla brutally insults her father for his apparent ignorance of Claudia's villainy, but the ghost of her mother re-enters and reprimands Amla for her inaction and harsh words. Unable to see or hear the ghost himself, Gerald takes Amla's conversation with it as further evidence of madness. After begging the King to stop sleeping with Claudia, Amla leaves, dragging Polina's corpse away.
Act IV
Amla jokes with Claudia about where she has hidden Polina's body, and the Queen, fearing for her life, sends Roseline and Genevieve to accompany Amla to England with a sealed letter to the English Queen requesting that Amla be executed immediately.
Unhinged by grief at Polina's death, Orpheus wanders Elsinore. Laetitia arrives back from France, enraged by her mother's death and her brother's madness. Claudia convinces Laetitia that Amla is solely responsible, but a letter soon arrives indicating that Amla has returned to Denmark, foiling Claudia's plan. Claudia switches tactics, proposing a fencing match between Laetitia and Amla to settle their differences. Laetitia will be given a poison-tipped foil, and, if that fails, Claudia will offer Amla poisoned wine as a congratulation. Gerald interrupts to report that Orpheus has drowned, though it is unclear whether it was suicide or an accident caused by his madness.
Act V
Hanna has received a letter from Amla, explaining that the princess escaped by negotiating with pirates who attempted to attack her England-bound ship, and the friends reunite offstage. Two gravediggers discuss Orpheus’s apparent suicide while digging his grave. Amla arrives with Hanna and banters with one of the gravediggers, who unearths the skull of a jester from Amla's childhood, Yora. Amla picks up the skull, saying "alas, poor Yora" as she contemplates mortality. Orpheus's funeral procession approaches, led by Laetitia. Amla and Hanna initially hide, but when Amla realizes that Orpheus is the one being buried, she reveals herself, proclaiming her love for him. Laetitia and Amla fight by Orpheus's graveside, but the brawl is broken up.
Back at Elsinore, Amla explains to Hanna that she had discovered Claudia's letter with Roseline and Genevieve's belongings and replaced it with a forged copy indicating that her former friends should be killed instead. A foppish courtier, Osra, interrupts the conversation to deliver the fencing challenge to Amla. Amla, despite Hanna's pleas, accepts it. Amla does well at first, leading the match by two hits to none, and Gerald raises a toast to her using the poisoned glass of wine Claudia had set aside for Amla. Claudia tries to stop him but is too late: he drinks, and Laetitia realizes the plot will be revealed. Laetitia slashes Amla with her poisoned blade. In the ensuing scuffle, they switch weapons, and Amla wounds Laetitia with her own poisoned sword. Gerald collapses and, claiming he has been poisoned, dies. In her dying moments, Laetitia reconciles with Amla and reveals Claudia's plan. Amla rushes at Claudia and kills her. As the poison takes effect, Amla, hearing that Floria is marching through the area, names the Norwegian princess as her successor. Hanna, distraught at the thought of being the last survivor and living whilst Amla does not, says she will commit suicide by drinking the dregs of Gerald's poisoned wine, but Amla begs her to live on and tell her story. Amla dies in Hanna's arms, proclaiming "the rest is silence". Floria, who was ostensibly marching towards Poland with her army, arrives at the palace, along with an English ambassador bringing news of Roseline and Genevieve's deaths. Hanna promises to recount the full story of what happened, and Floria, seeing the entire Danish royal family dead, takes the crown for herself and orders a military funeral to honour Amla.

Ever arrived home from a holiday wishing it went for just a little (or a lot) longer?
Viking Cruises has formed the perfect solution for eager travellers not scared of committing to the ultimate long-haul, with its 245-day Ultimate World Cruise onboard the Viking Sun. Yes, 245 days.
>> Scroll down to enter a competition to win the cruise of a lifetime!
VIKING CRUISES
Viking Sun cruising into Sydney.
The eight-month cruise visits six continents, 59 countries and 113 ports with an itinerary that allows guests to explore the most beautiful parts of the world, from the Amazon to the Middle East.
Viking’s Ultimate World Cruise is due to set sail in August later this year, but earlier this year we had the chance to sample life on the ship as it embarked on its 128-day journey from Miami to London.

SUPPLIED
Touring to luxury locations like Bora Bora.
9Honey Travel spoke with passengers onboard the Viking Sun – some of whom have been sailing non-stop since December, 2018 – to get a sense of what you’re really in for when you embark on such an extensive sea journey. This is what they had to say about it.
128 days on the Viking Sun
It’s no secret that 128 days is a bloody long time to be on a boat – enough to scare some travellers away. But when chatting to the world travellers – dubbed ‘Worldies’ by crew – the lengthy trip doesn’t feel like such a chore.
SUPPLIED
Poolside on the Viking Sun.
“It feels like home,” Karen Koleceski told 9Honey Travel. “How could you ever get sick of home?”
Sounds hard to believe that a ship could ever truly feel like home, but the Viking Sun, comes close.
The nine-deck vessel comes with all the comforts of land, kitted out with restaurants for every kind of diner, bars, free Wi-Fi, an impressive fitness centre, spa, cinema and pool – that’s not even mentioning the on-shore excursions and countless onboard activities.
SUPPLIED
Your room for possibly several months.
It also helps that the Viking Sun is an all-veranda ship, with a wide variety of staterooms to choose from, each featuring their very own veranda space.
Solo traveller Dietmar Georg is travelling the entire leg from Miami to London, and stressed the importance of finding your own sense of home onboard the ship.
“This is my first cruise longer than one week and my first solo cruise,” said Georg. For such a long journey you need to be prepared to make the ship – and especially your cabin – your home for four-and-a-half months. That is the only way.”
VIKING CRUISES
The Viking Sun in Venice.
If 128 days sounds a bit much, you may prefer a capped itinerary – Viking allows guests to select certain legs to cut your journey down to a more suitable length.
“The whole journey was probably too long for us,” said Jean Loussarian from South Carolina, who travelled on the Viking Sun from Chile to Australia. “Our trip was just 32 days.”
Keeping busy at sea
The thing about world cruises is that the distance between ports are lengthy and sea days are inevitable.
Luckily, the ship is designed so guests will never be strapped for something to do with a range of activities on rotation, from fitness classes and bridge walks to history lectures or learning an entirely new skill.
“One of my favourite things on the boat was the enrichment talks,” said traveller Jean Loussarian. “I guess I learned a lot about the history of the areas we were visiting, and the voyages which happened in the same places many years ago.”
Solo traveller Dietmar shared his favourite ways to stay busy on sea days. “I enjoy the nightly get together and dinners with fellow solo travellers,” said Georg. “There’s also my daily gym and sauna routine and friendly team trivia competition.
“Oh, and of course the glorious food in all its variety.”
Choosing the right long-term cruise
There’s a real thirst for world or long-term cruises right now, particularly among the retiree market, with more and more cruise companies crafting extended itineraries to meet growing demand. Of course it goes without saying, when you’re in it for the long-haul it’s important to choose the right one for you.
When Viking launches its 245-day Ultimate World Cruise itinerary later this year, they will officially hold the record for the world’s longest sea journey, a milestone years in the making. And it’s not hard to see why the company have cornered the market in this space.
“We have been on about 20 cruises, and three times with Viking,” said Jean Loussarian. “We have sailed on Princess, Norwegian, Costa, Queen Mary II, NCL, Holland America and Royal Caribbean, but to us, Viking is number one.”
“On other ships you have too many people and children, we like that there are only 930 guests onboard the Viking Sun. Plus, the WiFi and excursions are free – that’s important to us.”
Dietmar saw the itinerary and was sold.
“Most of all I chose this itinerary because of the 44 scheduled ports and cities, of which I had previously seen only three – Miami, London, Sydney.
“All of South America, New Zealand, Southern and Western Australia, all of Sub-Saharan Africa, French Polynesia, was – is – virgin territory to me.”
And would he do it again? “I would look forward to it.
“There are many, many parts of the world for me to still discover.”
The writer was a guest of Viking Cruises.
