Eight Comics to Sooth a Savage Soul
From Primordial Warriors and Jungle Heroes to Woodland Wildmen and Mutant Berserkers, here are eight comics appeasing our animalistic, hunter/predator-fight or flight-lizard brains. Reminders that man is just an animal trapped in his own zoo
Lord of the Jungle (2022)
A compelling tale starring the og jungle hero, Tarzan! I picked this up on a whim and it became one of my most anticipated reads each month. The writing pulled me through each page as effortlessly as the gorgeous art swings Tarzan from tree to tree
Ka-Zar Lord Of The Savage Land (2021)
Ka-Zar is essentially Marvel’s answer to Tarzan. With animal based powers and a family to protect against the invasive technological metaphor for deforestation, fracking and industrial pollution, this is a really cool and gorgeous miniseries
All Against All (2022)
Pushing “Tarzan” even further into the realm of sci-fi than “Ka-Zar”, this story centers parental trauma around an alien war mining Earth’s creatures for biological weaponry. Ultra violent with hyper intense art enhancing the vibes
Sheena Queen of the Jungle: Fatal Exams (2023)
Sheena is back and is now attending prep school? I’m gonna be honest, not having read any previous “Sheena”, I’m not really sure why she’s there or how old she’s supposed to be, but the school drama is fun between her ecoterrorism!
Bloodrik (2023)
A hyborian hunter looking to eat! This is a 3 issue mini, with the finale issue set to drop next month. Minimalist storytelling sets the stage for phenomenal art with heavy metal overtones, while it’s unique page layouts are giving CLAMP on T
Kroma (2022)
This comic is very different from the others on this list, playing a sort of twist on the Giver crossed with elements of the Wickerman. An absolutely stunning story about propaganda, religious indoctrination, and a sacrificial scapegoat ready to bring it all down
Shirtless Bear-Fighter! (2017)
Are you ready to punch some bears!? Shirtless dedicated his life to protecting the forest, until something happened that turned him onto the war against bearrorism! A really cute comedy with a surprising amount of depth. Raunchy but fairly tame tbh
Wolverine (2020)
Of course I’m adding the most iconic wild man of our time to the list! The current run is a great place to start, especially when paired with X-Force (2020), but any entry in his bibliography is gonna be a wild, messy ride from start to finish.
Thanks for reading my list! Hopefully one of them peaked your interest enough to check out. Here are a few savagely honorable mentions that’re also definitely worth looking into:
Animal Man, Berserk, Conan the Barbarian, Red Sonja, Sabretooth, Swamp Thing
What are some of y’all favorite wild man comics?

While not based on an actual video game, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is an amazing video game movie.
It manages to stand outside of the typical action movie, and has serval hilarious video game references that really make it stand out as a film. I original started watching it because it was recommended through my young sheldon/why women kill/grey’s anatomy YouTube shorts, and I was drawn in by Jack Black (I can’t help it I love Jack Black he is like a better Danny DeVito).
Now, I know I have been critical of Rock movies, I believe a lot of his movies have bad plots, weird morals, lack any quality themes, and place ass-kicking over plot. I also know, I love those movies. Action movies are cool as fuck and it’s fun to watch over choreographed fight sequences that make me believe anyone can do a cartwheel-kick-split-spin-punch. Jumanji is a great blend of the typical action movie with puzzles, and that problem solving/ violence is what makes me love video games too.
Yes, some of the puzzles are kind of silly, but while I was watching the movie I totally envisioned trying to play it as a video game. Especially during the scene where (spoilers) The Rock had to find a different way to reach the Jaguar so he had to take the path through the trees. Yes, at the end it became more action movie, but the awesome cutscenes, the annoying npcs, a cool villain that so many people would 100% cosplay, boss drum music, it’s all there. I really appreciated the bits that felt like I was in a video game like thinking you completed a level only to have to do one last thing, calculating if you have enough lives left, the thought put into the number of lives and the system. It really felt like there were actual stakes in the movie, like what if they just killed off Nick Jonas and didn’t bring him home? It felt like there was a good amount of though actually put into the writing and directing, I just really appreciated the vibes.
I know there’s most likely not a huge fan base for these movies, but I do feel like certain people who are turning video games into movies *cough cough* Nintendo *cough* that should really watch and take some notes on how this movie handles the video game feel.
#I kept referring the to the characters by their names#it was wild to watch Jack Black the Rock Nebuala and Nick Jonas adventure together#also the effects in this movie weren’t half bad#I lowkey forgot to check if it past the Bechtel test#did Jack black count as a girl? he did use she/her pronouns#Jack black teaching what is mean to be a girl was everything to me#he should have been in the barbie movie#nintendo#watch this movie#if you make the legend of Zelda movie dumb I’m going to be so mad#jumanji#jumanji welcome to the jungle#and why was it lowkey so funny#movie review#movie#review#the rock#I’m very drunk posting this so I’m so sorry if this makes no sense#alchol has been consumed in the making of this post

Erotic films. They are almost as old as the cinema itself. Nevertheless, it is still taboo to talk about its evolution, its importance within the cinema's history, and its link with the political, cultural and social context of its time. This series of blog posts aims to explore through 4 films, the rises and falls of erotic cinema.
Episode 1: Tarzan the Ape Man (1932), Tarzan and His Mate (1934) and Tarzan Escapes (1936)
Even if the first film with a scene considered erotic, The Kiss by William Heise, is from 1896, nudity is more and more visible on screen after the apparition of cinema censorship, in 1907 in the US, and 1909 in the UK and in France. Two ways are developed to bypass the censorship: a clandestine one with real nude scenes for the bourgeoisie, and a more mainstream one where everything is based on suggestion.
In 1930 was put in place one of the most famous censorship restrictions in cinema History: the Hays Code. We are not here to talk about the Code in particular but to focus on the Tarzan trilogy and the impact of the Code on the erotism it showed in the two first movies.
youtube
Indeed, Tarzan the Ape Man and Tarzan and His Mate are good examples of what we call the pre-code period, a time before 1934 when there was not a hard application of it. Jane, the Tarzan’s mate, played by Maureen O'Sullivan, wears a simple halter-top and a loincloth letting her thighs and hips exposed to the audience's eyes. Tarzan and His Mate create a controversy due to this immorality for the time. In several scenes, Jane appears naked, and in particular, shows her sleeping in Tarzan’s arms whereas they are not married. Moreover, a scene later called the “underwater ballet” was edited into three different versions by MGM to suit the different legislation in force in the different areas of film exploitation.
youtube
But with Tarzan Escapes, released in 1936, just 2 years after Tarzan and His Mate, the party is over. In a reproduction of the “underwater ballet”, Jane wears sort of a jumpsuit, hiding her curves to please the censorship, embodying the end of the pre-code era. Low-cut necklines are limited, and even navels are forbidden on screen! Unseemly movements such as caresses, passionate embraces or dirty dancing can’t be shown. Erotism has to be suggested to exist, and paradoxically, it is at that time that codes of erotism on screen are created.
youtube
Our next blog post will bring us to 1952, a symbolic date with the Supreme Court decision to preserve the First Amendment of the US Constitution, starting a period of liberation on screen, until 1968.
