hi im ranting (positively! this game kills me but in a good way) about breath of the wild again
i know it's controversial but i love the way the story of the game is told. because you start the game in the middle, perhaps near the end, of the story. the game is entirely through link's perspective and he wakes up knowing and remembering nothing. in turn, the player starts off knowing nothing. the past is revealed as the story goes along, and the player learns about the past and about the land as link does. there are little tidbits about hyrule and about the calamity scattered across the land. an old woman in hateno village tells you of an age of desolation that she grew up in. the travellers you see on the road are younger people because they're described by older characters as more bold, whereas the older characters grew up being told to never leave the village, it's too dangerous outside (compare this even to tears of the kingdom, where travellers are more common because the land has been safer. even older characters have left their home to travel elsewhere (not including the lurelin villagers)). battlefields are still strewn with old rusty weapons and deactivated guardians that no one but monsters will go near. myths and legends about the princess and hero have been passed down, to the point where their legitmacy is questioned and everyone has a different opinion on them.
it's environmental storytelling. it's things like seeing drawings and a bow in zelda's study and seeing a child reading a storybook with a hero that wears a blue tunic similar to link's. it's the stories that the villagers share about old myths that turn out to be true. it's the ruins scattered across the land, long since overtaken by monster camps but still unmistakably being houses that people once lived in. it's the utter lack of civilization anywhere remotely near the castle and the feeling of dread in the ruins of the town that surrounds it. it's a kingdom entrenched in its past, with no ability to move away from it until the calamity is finally defeated.
#head into the wall. i love this game so much#legend of zelda#breath of the wild#and no i dont hate totk for getting rid of the sheikah tech and replacing it with zonai tech#the zonai tech is foreign and new to the people of hyrule and theyre EXCITED about it#how many zonai researchers are there in totk vs how many sheikah researchers in botw?#people are wary of the technology that destroyed their home a century ago#and they're terrified of the guardians that still roam the land#i still hold that link likely was behind the reason why the shrine of resurrection was completely dismantled#it's kinda like majora's mask in which half of the story is in the side quests and the characters#mm had a plot yeah but it kind of accompanied the rest of the setting#link had a goal but he also had so many people to talk to#botw is similar. link has a goal in mind but he's also one to help others#and if someone literally just lost their chickens or if their husband is sick and needs medicine. he's willing to help them out#the world is just as important as the plot itself and i think i like that more#than just a linear plot which is accompanied by the world#botw totk and mm reward you for exploring#(along with some of the others like twilight princess and a link between worlds)#but it's very different i think when half of the game is about exploring#or more than half even. you have your goal but you have to get there first#and there are so many ways you can get there and so much you can encounter along the way#biting screaming crying#the bow is in zelda's room but close enough

it's kind of funny to me, albeit very interesting, that I'm a very picky eater and yet have also become a locavore and something of a 'foodie' per se, I really enjoy food (and cooking!), and going to unique and sometimes upscale restaurants serving ~local ingredients~ and I really value a quality dining experience and learning the character of new places through their food. yet I got a 29 on that picky eater test lol
#is this a contradiction? like im just wondering if there's other picky eaters out there who also are really into food#picky eaters get stereotyped into 'so you only eat chicken nuggets and french fries'#but I almost never go out to eat unless i'm traveling#I cook all my meals and I love discovering new combinations of foods and flavors I like and I eat quite healthy#(I don't really like fried foods or fast food so like. what foods one is picky about varies way more than is commonly realized)#like an average dinner for me is wild-caught salmon with garlic-sauteed swiss chard and wild rice#but the number of foods i do not like is. through the roof according to mainstream society or smth.#and it's true i dislike a Lot of vegetables and fruits. but the things i do like I try to eat a lot of#there's a pretty small sliver of flavors and ingredients i enjoy from the total global pool of foods. but within it i try to be creative#and i love food and cooking more than anything#food is one of the greatest joys of life for me#idk. i just have not heard about others having this sort of dichotomy and i'd like to know if this is a thing#maybe bc i'm an ecologist? like all my coworkers are either vegans or hunters or locavores#i'll eat p much any game or fish#my desire to eat local is an ideological one as much as a flavor and nutritional one#and because of my ulcerative colitis i have additional restrictions (not enforced. but Recommended) on my diet#such as reducing processed sugar for unrefined sugars and using gluten alternatives when i bake etc#it's just an interesting mix of things imo and it seems inexplicable to people i try to explain it to irl

#it's 3 am and I can't fall asleep again#I just woke up from a nightmare where I got stabbed#it was a cool dream in a way because I was reading a newspaper and there was a report about some stabbing#and only through that I found out that I was the victim and that I'm actually dead#cool but I woke up all shaky#then I was laying in my bed trying to fall asleep when I realised I forgot to take out the chicken from the freezer#so I gather all my strength and get to the kitchen only to find out that there's no more chicken#now I'm back in bed and there's a fucking fly in my bedroom#it's buzzing nonstop and soon I think I willget into full Walter White mode#i also dreamt about elevators just riding them constantly in some huge New York looking city#and in the end I found out thay that city wasn't real and it was only a model of a city in someone's room#isn't it torture when I talk about my dreams?#also my stomach is killing me maybe that's why I'm having those crazy dreams#i think I'll try to go and try to sleep again#i just wanted to share my wild Saturday night with you#goodnight!!!

Facebook group post P1: what did people feed quail before purina was a thing? P2: they didn't! quail are wild animals and they didn't keep them Me: did anyone inform 11th Century China they weren't supposed to keep and breed quail? Or 12th Century Japan, who bred and competed them as song birds with benefits. What about the ancient Egyptians... and not sure what bird they were eating the Bible - better double check that quail are kosher. Also those pesky Victorians, can't keep their paws off keeping and breeding every single animal known to man.
#ffs just because quail weren't commonly kept outside of japan and china until the mid-19ths century#doesn't mean no one else was keeping them#like not to be that person but coturnix coturnix is literally called PHAROAH quail and JAPANESE quail#honestly I suspect europeans weren't keeping them because they had pigeons which are more or less quail that fly LOL#or quail are pigeons that don't fly#anyway they fill the same niche along with bantam chickens#which were more popular in the new world than either pigeons or quail#until cities started systemically banning them#after the world war 2? I believe it was 2#I suspect the reason quail are becoming popular in the US right now is people are trying to skirt those restrictions#because they're realizing they want some control over their food supply#its like domestic rats#people don't seem to realize rats were kept in Japan before the Victorians started breeding them as pets/novelties#very few common place animals of today weren't kept in the past by various cultures#there are several species of domestic finch that come from SE Asia and straight up don't exist in the wild#see also mule canaries ie. hybrids between canaries and goldfinches

When I was in vet school I went to this one lecture that I will never forget. Various clubs would have different guest lecturers come in to talk about relevant topics and since I was in the Wildlife Disease Association club I naturally attended all the wildlife and conservation discussions. Well on this particular occasion, the speakers started off telling us they had been working on a project involving the conservation of lemurs in Madagascar. Lemurs exist only in Madagascar, and they are in real trouble; they’re considered the most endangered group of mammals on Earth. This team of veterinarians was initially assembled to address threats to lemur health and work on conservation solutions to try and save as many lemur species from extinction as possible. As they explored the most present dangers to lemurs they found that although habitat loss was the primary problem for these vulnerable animals, predation by humans was a significant cause of losses as well. The vets realized it was crucial for the hunting of lemurs by native people to stop, but of course this is not so simple a problem.
The local Malagasy people are dealing with extreme poverty and food insecurity, with nearly half of children under five years old suffering from chronic malnutrition. The local people have always subsisted on hunting wildlife for food, and as Madagascar’s wildlife population declines, the people who rely on so-called bushmeat to survive are struggling more and more. People are literally starving.
Our conservation team thought about this a lot. They had initially intended to focus efforts on education but came to understand that this is not an issue arising from a lack of knowledge. For these people it is a question of survival. It doesn’t matter how many times a foreigner tells you not to eat an animal you’ve hunted your entire life, if your child is starving you are going to do everything in your power to keep your family alive.
So the vets changed course. Rather than focus efforts on simply teaching people about lemurs, they decided to try and use veterinary medicine to reduce the underlying issue of food insecurity. They supposed that if a reliable protein source could be introduced for the people who needed it, the dependence on meat from wildlife would greatly decrease. So they got to work establishing new flocks of chickens in the most at-risk communities, and also initiated an aggressive vaccination program for Newcastle disease (an infectious illness of poultry that is of particular concern in this area). They worked with over 600 households to ensure appropriate husbandry and vaccination for every flock, and soon found these communities were being transformed by the introduction of a steady protein source. Families with a healthy flock of chickens were far less likely to hunt wild animals like lemurs, and fewer kids went hungry. Thats what we call a win-win situation.
This chicken vaccine program became just one small part of an amazing conservation outreach initiative in Madagascar that puts local people at the center of everything they do. Helping these vulnerable communities of people helps similarly vulnerable wildlife, always. If we go into a country guns-blazing with that fire for conservation in our hearts and a plan to save native animals, we simply cannot ignore the humans who live around them. Doing so is counterintuitive to creating an effective plan because whether we recognize it or not, humans and animals are inextricably linked in many ways. A true conservation success story is one that doesn’t leave needy humans in its wake, and that is why I think this particular story has stuck with me for so long.

I'm howling with laughter because I just found a manhwa that has the same premise as Cluck of the Wild
#its called princess in the henhouse and its about a princess who got turned into a chicken#and only one person (the hero) can understand her when she talks#everything else is pretty different though lmao#ok real talk I swear I am either developing psychic powers or people are mining my google docs for ideas#bc in cluck one of my ideas was 'haha the new champions fight the blights alongside link in this'#and then the totk trailer came out that revealed you fight alongside the sages (which are mostly the new champions except tulin)#and I thought 'oh haha that makes sense i guess we had the same idea'#then a while later I was mulling over a different fanfic idea for zelda but this time it was an original set of incarnations#and my idea was essentially 'what if demise had an incarnation before ganondorf (that wasn't vaati)'#so i thought i would set this story arouns the time of hyrule's founding and also rauru from OoT would be a character in this one#he'd be a relative of zelda's like her uncle or something#and then totk comes out and. well#AND THE ONE THAT CLINCHES IT FOR ME#is that in my femlink and zel story#link's sword gets blessed by din at one point so I thought 'it needs a cool name... sword of power is too on the nose how about a synonym'#so i called it the sword of Might. and then echoes of wisdom comes out. and take a wild guess what the sword in that game is called.#i swear to fucking god i know I have no way or proving this but it is all true I am clairvoyant or getting hacked
