Stormlight Characters! Shallan and Jasnah are dating! How do you react?
We’ve already imagined reactions to Shallan/Kaladin and Kaladin/Adolin. Let’s continue the series (?) by considering how people might react if Shallan started dating Jasnah!
Adolin: Is it odd for me to lose Shallan to the person who arranged my engagement to Shallan in the first place?
Adolin: Yes, a little!
Adolin: But, I mean, it’s Jasnah. Who can blame her, really?
Navani: That engagement was originally intended as a way to bind Shallan to the Kholin house.
Navani: Ah, Jasnah. Always deciding to just do things herself.
Balat: And to think this all started because we sent you to steal that Soulcaster, Small One.
Wikim: Love is a strange thing!
Jushu (muttering): Especially in our family.
Veil: I-I was kidding about only liking dumb women, of course! I am thrilled and not at all intimidated!
Radiant: As someone vaguely modeled after Jasnah, I feel very happy for Shallan!
Radiant: What was once but a splinter personality with slighter larger boobs is now Shallan’s reality!
Dalinar: I remember when Shallan suggested that Jasnah be made queen.
Dalinar: And now Shallan is dating the queen.
Dalinar: I won’t dwell on it.
Kabsal: Wow. So, I REALLY read that situation wrong!
Amaram: OHHHH... so THAT’S why Jasnah was never interested in me!
Amaram: I am so happy it was just that and no other reason!
Amaram: Why is everyone looking at me like that?!
Elhokar: Shallan was very brave during the mission to Kholinar, and she’s a Lightweaver just like I almost was!
Elhokar: I bet she’s WAY more trustworthy than my wife was!
Ivory: Surprise is.
Ivory: Jasnah is logical. Shallan is...not.
Pattern: Mmmm...humans say opposites attract.
Pattern: But by that, they mean people with a notable differences in personalities and not things that are actually opposites at all!
Pattern: Mmm...delicious human lies...
Ivory: ...
Ivory: Jasnah’s partners...why must they always be Lightweavers?
Hoid: Of course, as an immortal, I am used to my relationships having expiration dates!
Hoid: So I am totally fine with Jasnah leaving me for Shallan!
Design: More depression noodles?
Hoid: YES PLEASE

what I wouldn't give to see Adolin interacting with his brothers-in-law. I imagine it would be kind of awkward at first - Balat, Wikim, and Jushu would probably be kind of intimidated by this powerful highprince who's now somehow part of their screwed up family and I can see Adolin being at a loss as to how to connect with them right off the bat - but the hijinks the four of them would get up to once they become friends. Navani smells smoke somewhere in the tower and sighs because she thought the Davar family dinner was next week

my totally realistic predictions for the way of kings engame:
1. Wikim and Renarin get arranged married (they’re both creepy and weird and scare off the hoes. Also sudoku enthusiasts) so Shallan can go fuck off and be transgender elsewhere while accomplishing her task of securing her house to the kholin house
2. Adolin and Kaladin yaoi break for the next 10 years until Kaladin either kills himself (accidentally) or dies saving Dalinar (intentionally). Adolin learns to dual wield shardblades and it’s really sexy. Maybe he dabbles in gender by learning how to read.
3. Shallan fucks off and goes to be transgender elsewhere (not out of hate I just think she would really enjoy fucking off forever or at least until she got bored). Pattern is there. Also gaz.
4. Rock finally goes back to the peaks to see his wife and kids (rest of bridge 4 goes with him except moash (moash and elhokar are holding hands skipping around because they’re besties again))
5. Jasnah king emperor of roshar everyone please pay your respects to the new queen of everything forever 🙏🙏🙏🙏
see you all in 20 years when the final novel comes out and I’ll be right about everything.
#no predictions for Dalinar because I’m sure book 3 will go super well for him and I’ve yet to read it#I imagine when Renarin meets wikim in book3 he’s like ‘ah. I see. well I guess marrying this rando is better than killing myself. also#Shallan congrats on your future transition’ and she’s like Huh? Transition into what? and Renarin gives the camera a knowing look#I genuinely do think Kaladin is gonna die saving someone book 8/9. there’s no way he’s living to 40 with his lifestyle.#a day in the life of steeve#way of kings#stormlight archive

It would be so funny to me if Jasnah, after all Shallan's agonizing over whether she would discover her theft, could use the 'dud' Soulcaster anyway.

As kimchi has been drawing attention as a global healthy food trend, cabbage is one of the representative vegetables used as a main ingredient for manufacturing kimchi overseas. The annual global production of cabbage and other Brassica crops is reported to be 72 million tons, and more than 30% of them are estimated to be discarded during the manufacturing and distribution processes, causing environmental pollution as well as considerable waste disposal costs in the industry. In connection with this problem, Hae Choon Chang, President of the World Institute of Kimchi (WiKim), has announced that the institute has developed a bio-refactoring-based upcycling technology that can convert cabbage byproducts discarded as waste during the food manufacturing process into biodegradable plastics.

Round Two
The Hargreeves (The Umbrella Academy) VS House Davar (Stormlight Archive/Cosmere)
Fanart of House Davar by @lamaery
The Hargreeves
Members: Reginald, Luther, Diego, Allison, Klaus, Five, Ben, Viktor, Grace, Pogo
Propaganda:
"Forced family that cannot spend 3 minutes together without arguing. Has caused the world to end multiple times. Their father is a horribly abusive person who caused them to fight to always prove themselves better than their siblings to earn his love which was futile because he never loved or cared for any of them and also hes a supervillain. They lost and regained 2 of their siblings over the course of the show and straight up adopted alternate universe versions of their siblings against their will. That all said they STILL cant get along. Horrible ♡" "They were raised by a billionare after they were all taken by their families. Five left and ben died young. Now theyre all fucked up, kinda hate each other. Viktor almost killed allison, luther and diego have some kind of rivalry, they all get mad at klaus. Theyre all just fucked up and we love them for it <3" More propaganda here
House Davar
Members: Lin, Shallan, Helaran, Balat, Wikim, Jushu, Eylita, and Brightness Davar
Propaganda:
CW: murder, poisoning, stragulation
"Major spoilers. Lin is an abusive father who (according to his kids) killed his wife. Later his daughter Shallan poisoned him. The poison didn’t work fast enough so Shallan strangled him with a necklace while singing a lullaby that earlier in the book she sang to herself to comfort herself with while hearing him yelling at someone. Then a while later she stopped represing her memories so much and remembered that actually she had killed her mother but had convinced herself that her father had done it. Also Helaran joined an organization trying to bring about the apocalypse and died"

Continued Failure of the Biden Administration
“I want to make clear that we are realistic and clear-eyed about the prospects of breakthroughs on any of these issues,” an unnamed State Department official said when briefing reporters last week on Blinken’s agenda. This is how State warns in advance that the secretary will be wasting his time and our money during his encounters in Shanghai and Beijing.
What is this if not an admission of our secretary of state’s diplomatic impotence? Or do I mean incompetence? Or both? This is the man, after all, who arrived in Israel five days after the events of last Oct. 7 to announce, “I come before you as a Jew.” Does this guy understand diplomacy or what?
The media followed the State Department’ lead, naturally, in advising us of the pointlessness of Blinken’s sojourn in China—this at both ends of the Pacific. CNBC: “Washington is realistic about its expectations on Blinken’s visit in resolving key issues.” Japan Times: “While crucial for keeping lines of communication open, the visit is unlikely to yield major breakthroughs.”

Shallan Davar kind of hates her brothers. Sometimes, at least. They are lucky that she kind of loves them, too. Granted, not as much as she hates and loves herself (there is nothing "kind of" about that. Only sometimes). But still.
Her father is always doing his best to beat indifference into her (metaphorically at least) while her tutors call her a monster whenever she lets it slip how little she cares. Easy for them to say. They get to leave, after all. So it is proof of how important her brothers are to her, that she cares so much. Even if those feelings toe the line between loathing and disgust sometimes.
You can't really blame her, though. They are a bit pathetic. She isn't sure if it is something inherent to her or another piece molded by her father, but Shallan has always appreciated strength. It is only in the definition of what makes a strong person that her and father's opinions deviate. Most of the time, at least. (Probably not as often as she'd like).
Three older boys - men, really - with their entire sense of joy depending upon the whims of one little girl? Sometimes she can understand Helaran's urge to leave. Other times she thinks he is the most pathetic of them all.
Then again, she supposes it is not their fault. It was by design, after all. In a way, this is another twisted way father favored her. He breaks them apart so she can glue them back together. Because maybe she is weak, but she knows that they are even worse. Shallan, so kind, so delicate, so feminine, so submissive. Shallan, so observant and so smart, always aching, always better.
Her brothers are easy to figure out. Love, jokes, something to do. Most people are, if you strip back their layers of angst and self-important. In the end, all everyone wants is to be wanted.
(She is not exempt from that. She knows she is not exempt from that and she loathes it with everything in her being because it makes her feel stupid and vain and weak. It makes her average. Like everyone else.
So she locks it away, like everything else she is scared of. Aren't they easy, she'll think, seeing her brother's eyes lighten up when he receives another letter. And, if only for a moment, she'll feel good. A confirmation of what she already knows.)
Shallan has always loathed weakness, so of course she took the first chance to get out of there on her own. Wikim's laugh, once a warm blanket of approval, makes her want to grit her teeth. Balat's sad attempts at leadership, once a source of amusement, now make her want to punch him in the face. She could do a better job. She knows she could because she already did - rescuing her older brothers from despair. But they still just see her as a little girl. And Jushu? Everything about him vexes her. She can't hear any of their voices without wanting to throw up. "I'll do it for the family", she had said, amping up her part as the demure little sister. "You're so brave, Shallan" "You are our salvation, Shallan" "I know you can do it, Shallan".
Shallan looks over at her betrothed, his hair golden beneath the sunlight. Adolin Kholin is a beautiful man. And he wants her. (Of course he does - just like Jasnah wanted her brain, just like her brothers wanted her clever tongue, just like her father wanted her heart, just like her mother wanted her head)
Shallan looks over at her betrothed and smiles at him.
(A small ugly part of her was relieved that Jasnah didn't make it. At least she didn't have to go through it again. Watching helplessly as feelings of admiration and affection turn into anger and disgust. No way to escape or to stop it.)
Adolin Kholin, so strong, so handsome, so talented, so powerful.
(She thinks back to her brothers. She looks forward to being able to spend time with them again. She prays that, by the time they meet again, the distaste will have run its course. At least for now. She misses being able to stomach their presence and it hurts.)
The firstborn of the arguably most important man in the east and a girl from a small indebted house slowly collapsing into itself.
She wonders how much time they have.

Something I love about Adolin specifically in regards to his relationship with Shallan is how different he is from her whole family. Like he thinks she’s the coolest thing since fashion when they meet, and when he figures out she’s a radiant?? All bets are off, no one will ever be as cool as her. He doesn’t even seem jealous (so far, I’m still reading), unlike her mom who tried to kill her for what she is.
Unlike her father, he places the blame on the right people and doesn’t punish people for someone else. Like even at the height of his exasperation with Kaladin, he didn’t punish bridge 4 or other dark eyes, heck he doesn’t even punish Kaladin he just gets really sassy. He has such a strong sense of self that he doesn’t take his demons out on anyone else. Like the only issue I’ve seen so far is his playboy tendencies, and part of that is that he’s a powerful guy in his early 20s that has women falling over themselves for him, many of whom probably care more for his wealth and reputation than who he actually is.
Unlike Helaran he doesn’t leave or run away, and while Helaran was justified and I don’t blame him for leaving, Adolin faces most of his problems head on. They’re both Shardbearers but Shallan is able to see Adolin use his for good while she never knew Helaran as such.
Unlike Jushu, he takes direction and course corrects. Heck, even when he hated every moment, he did withdraw from the plateau when Kaladin told him to. When he figures out the best person to listen to, he listens to them, regardless of station. When he’s told not to do something, even something he loves and craves like dueling, he listens as long as you can give him solid reasons.
Unlike Wikim he’s not stuck in a cycle of depression, and I’m not blaming wikim in any way, but Shallan had to mother all of her older brothers in a way and when you grow up picking up slack for someone else, it’s often a relief to find someone who is the opposite from that. Adolin can stand as an independent person that can rely on Shallan as a partner, not as a parent or babysitter.
And what made me really think about this, is how different he is from Balat. He likes dueling but hates battle. He’s incredible at fighting and killing but will only do so if he must to protect people or serve his duty. Balat at least doesn’t hurt people at this point but he does destroy creatures weaker than him because he needs an ‘outlet’. He gets better admittedly, but the fact that Shallan knew about it when she was really young was obviously impactful.
Her siblings and father want her to fit a specific mold and even though she is good at drawing they want to limit her to appropriate subjects or just think it’s not that significant, but Adolin loves how much she cares about things, understands that she is brilliant, and is always impressed by even her casual drawings. Whatever insane direction she wants to go in, he’s there to support her not hinder her.
All the siblings give themselves the excuse of their terrible childhood and parents for their actions and attitudes. Shallan is growing out of that and was never as bad as her older brothers and Adolin’s family is perfect for her because they are also good at taking responsibility or learning to.
