AlCale Fanfiction Recommendations from a Crazy Person (Updating…)
For those who can accept anything.
All the works are from sotdae (솟대). I recommend reading in this order…!
I Don’t Love You (나는 당신을 사랑해지 않는다)
Part 1 • Part 2 • Part 2 (R18) • Epilogue (R18)
_
Of course it matters who the Young Master Shield dates! The mere rumor of the Rowoon Empire losing their Moon, their Silver Light, to a lover from a foreign power is already causing an uproar in the nobles’ conference—what more if the citizens caught wind? All the development in post-war stability will be for naught… unless…
“…What is it, Your Majesty?”
“Will you go out with me?”
“Are you crazy?”
If problems can be solved with bigger problems, then scandals can be solved with even bigger scandals.
Alver and Cale fake-date for political reasons. It progresses exactly how you’d expect it to.
_
Beautifully written. The author was able to excellently capture how two of the most calculating bastards would get together in their own special way.
Plot and Dialogue : S-Tier
_
Real Person Can Sue You
Part 1 • Part 2 • Part 2 (R18)
_
‘Why would he do something so stupid? He was so rich that additional income didn’t mean anything, and the honor he could lose was endless.’
OR
The one where Cale picks up a strange hobby after everything’s settled down.
_
If ancient Mesopotamia could churn out fanfiction for their local heroes Gilgamesh and Enkidu, then who’s to say Rowoon won’t have the same for their beloved Sun and Moon? Anyways, I dub this the “fujo cale fanfic”. It was a very funny unhinged premise, but still.
Plot and Dialogue : S-Tier
_
Hand (손)
Oneshot
_
There’s nothing in the hands of Rowoon’s newly crowned King that Cale desires.
Alver knows this.
And really, it’s not a bad thing at all.
“When you could read love in my eyes, did you think I couldn’t read love in yours?”
_
Well, I thought this was really… the character interpretation… I can see it in canon. Cale sat Alver on the throne because he knows that by then, the other’s number one priority will always be Rowoon. The second that priority wavers, Cale will definitely beat the King back to his senses. Don’t be distracted by useless emotions and focus. It was bittersweet, but the ending was really good. Alcale is real…
Plot and Dialogue: S-Tier

Bum of the Governor’s Family (관찰사댁의 한량이 되었다)
Part 1 • Part 2
(I’m not doing it any justice—but basically the title is a parody of the original work. Maybe a more literal translation of the title would be “I Became The Bum Bride of the Governor’s Household” because of 관찰사댁의. Also 한량이 is the more ancient term equivalent for “Slacker” with use dating back to the 900’s Goryeo Dynasty—so just imagine that setting and time period.)
_
A white hand like snow stretched out in front of Alver’s eyes.
“Take it, Your Highness. Then I’ll give you the world.”
The sweetest temptation.
Alver took its hand.
_
Oriental AU. Characteristics of secondary-sex and pheromones, but not necessarily omegaverse. If you’re a fan of Kingmaker Cale, then this one’s for you. Cunning til the end, while it does roughly follow the plot of the original—there are still some moments that will make you go: ah!
Plot and Dialogue: S-tier
_
Love Potion (사랑의 묘약)
Oneshot
_
There lay an empty a glass plate, its previous contents reduced to mere crumbs of sugar.
Funny thing is, apparently one of them had… a love potion!?
“Your Majesty, if you’re in love with me right now, give me a week’s vacation.”
“Well, the potion’s effects only last for three days…”
“Tch. Then three days.”
Alver smiled faintly.
“Young Master Cale, if you’re in love with me right now, please review this budget report.”
_
It was funny how they couldn’t tell who took the love potion. Whatever they felt has always been, in their own definition, love. A very sweet story.
Plot and Dialogue: S-tier
_
Jane
Part 1 • Part 2 • Part 3 (R18)
WARNING: The content of this story may not be suitable for those who are sensitive to: Rape, Adultery, Self-Harm, Blackmail (incest), Graphic descriptions of Death/Murder (infants, toddlers).
Please read with caution.
-
“Don’t call me, I won’t answer.”
“Then how do I catch you?”
Cale, who was inclined against the bedside, smiled brightly. He leaned his red head against the window, long hair flowing down and mixing with the moonlight.
“How can you catch me?”
_
If you can handle the heavy themes listed in the warning, then PLEASE give “Jane” a chance. No words can describe the emotional rollercoaster that was this story. Every description was as vivid as it was jarring. The downwards slope came gradually, but when it got steep—it felt impossible to turn back. For you as a reader, and for them as characters. Think about if Alver and Cale’s usual tacit agreement with each other took a twisted turn. I can guarantee none of what you’re thinking of now could prepare you for this fic.
Plot and Dialogue: SSS-Tier
_
copycat
Part 1 • Part 2 • Part 3 • Part 4 • Part 5 (R18) • Part 6 (R18) • Part 7 (R18) • Part 8 • Part 9
_
Basically LCF if it were the Sci-Fi genre. No excerpt, there are too many incredible parts. Heads up for scientists on steroids instead of mages, advanced AI robots instead of dragons, cyborgs instead of necromancers, and sick eugenicist AI White Star. Give it a read if you’re a fan of rich world building!

38, 40 & 41 for the movie asks! 💕
38 > in your opinion what is the most overrated movie?
idk what I think "thee" most overrated movie is like, there's just to many movies to narrow it down but one of MY most overrated movies will always be An American in Paris fucking waste of my god damn time like older films have a different sort of flow and pace compared to modern films and that's not the issue I can watch an older film and still vibe - I actually liked Judy Garland's A Star is Born even with all the obvious issues, Philadelphia Story wasn't bad either, Gentlemen Prefer Blonde's is delightful, etc - but like nothing fucking happens in An American in Paris worst is that the last 20-ish minute of the film is just Gene Kelly flexing just one long run-on dance scene that's not even like connected together??? It's just in his head with different set pieces and a means to flex Nina Foch as his dance partner
The only other film that inspires that much this shit is so fucking overrated to me is Singin in the Rain which I also didn't like. The songs were okay and yeah everybody in the cast can dance like whoa but the story is boring - I'd rather watch a documentary on actors being dubbed post silent era tbh it'd be more interesting - and Debbie Reynolds has no chemistry with Gene Kelly.
Maybe I don't like Gene Kelly movies lmao I find these two specifically "overrated" b/c they're considered "classics" in cinema and like I get why but also I hate them
A more modern day overrated pick is Captain America Civil War, fuck that movie oh and Blade Runner fuck that movie too
40 > a film you think everyone should see at least once
Fuck this is DIFFICULT so I'ma cheat lmao
Titanic - if only for the sheer power and brilliance of Cameron's direction like if you're a fan of film making I think you should watch this movie. The scene where the ship sets sail and the head on shot is so freaking well done it's phenomenal. Cameron is a good direction, I've seen a lot of his films and what I like about him is he makes good films that are well made but accessible.
Princess Mononoke OR Ponyo - I think these two are two of Miyazaki's best work in terms of animation. Storywise I prefer PM but Ponyo has just some absolutely amazing animation. What I really love about Miyazaki's direction is the still moments he has in his films, there's a lot of shots in PM where nothing is happening except a butterfly landing on a tree branch, or a character looking at the moon.
Tale of Princess Kaguya - speaking of Ghibli I feel like when it comes to Isao Takahata's work everyone recommends Grave of the Fireflies which is totally fair and I def think that film is 1000% worth watching but I think ToPK is his crowning jewel the animation is BRILLIANT and the story is heart wrenching. It really combines everything Takahata's work was so good at - tragedy, beauty, stillness, how the lack of community hurts us all ugh so good
NGE End of Eva - honestly this film is my Clockwork Orange in film bro terms lmao like I don't know if I "recommend" this b/c it's confusing - you gotta watch Death/Rebirth to even understand it at all and even THEN it's confusing - but it's so VISCERAL like def one of the most visceral experiences I've had watching a film and for that I think it's 100% worth watching
I also think it's worth checking out Martin Scorsese and Hayao Miyazaki's recommend films list
41 > name three movies you consider “classics” (yeah I cheated again sue me)
Ghost in the Shell (1995) for the sheer insane influence it had on cyberpunk and sci-fi
Metropolis (1927 and 2001) the OG film is really if you want to see how classic movies worked and if you like history, the 2001 is animated and not a remake but is beautifully animated and has one of the BEST climaxes of any film I've seen
Pretty Woman
Evil Dead
Princess Bride
Hero

Headcanons for Roy x Sue
Roy really enjoys doing outdoors activities with Sue, such as hiking, camping, fishing and hunting. He feels it's relaxing
Roy likes it when Sue sings to him, Sacae folksongs or anything really
Sue is an early riser, she wakes up to see the sunrise every morning. She often wakes Roy to have lazy morning sex
Sue likes painting pictures of nature and animals. Roy often gifts her sketchbooks, canvas and brushes
Roy likes to write poems in his diary and Sue keeps some in her bedside
Fae is always roaming in Pherae and she has her own room in the castle
They traveled together once or twice with Fae. Sue toured her around Sacae and Roy showed her Lycia
In her wedding, Sue wore beautiful wreath of ivy in her hair which was the symbol of her motherland
Autumn wedding. She walked barefooted on a field of leaves to reach her groom
When the two were about to kiss, an eagle landed next to them and spread the wings, covering the two. This symbolized their union, and the bird or prey reminded them to protect those under their care
After Sue refused Roy's first proposal, Roy met her again in Sacae when he had gone to meet Dayan. He was dumbstruck when he saw Sue, but this time she simply said with a calm smile: 'yes Roy' and he immediately understood
Sacae threw a big party to celebrate the bethroral. He held her close as they danced the night away around the bonfire
When Sue first arrived Pherae Castle, every kind of rumours started around her, that she was an exotic beauty brought as Roy's slave, a barbarian from the mountains, or even a witch. But that was soon put to rest
They decided to spend the anniversary of their wedding camping in the wilderness
Sue becomes a respected diplomat. She improves relations between Sacae and and Pherae. In Lycia she is the person to talk about Sacae matters
Roy gifted Sue a pendant of a doe and the doe became her symbol and protected animal
As the lady of the castle, Sue takes the noblewomen to horse riding and when it's raining she gives meditation lessons. At first they thought Sue was crazy, as they were expecting tea parties and sewing; but Sue was patient and with time they loved it
Sue found an injured eaglet, she brought home and trained it to fly. The eagle become very fond of Roy and often landed in their shoulders
Pherae castle is filled with animals: dogs, cats, birds and even wolves. Some pets sleep in their bedroom and Roy has no say in that
Sue brought new traditions to Pherae like falconry, which the other nobles thought was odd, but fun. She also introduced the custom of asking for the blessing of the birds, and celebrating every equinox
He does everything to protect Sue from political intrigue in the court but she is just "relax darling". He finds her calmness refreshing
When Eliwood passed away Roy seemed to spiral into despair, but Sue comforts him, she takes him out to walks in the forest and sunrise while they talk about Eliwood, and Roy eventually comes to terms with his passing
Sue hates prisons and in silence, with Roy's blessing, she takes care of the prisoners in the castle
Roy and Sue name their children after nature: flower, rivers, stones, natural phenomenons
Wolt, Lilina and Fae are among the godparents of their children
Visits to grandpa Dayan. They see him once a year and bring gifts from Pherae. Their children are quite familiar with the forest and Way of Sacae, Sue instructs them in the traditions and the warrior code of her tribe
Their children only become fully aware of their parents power and heroism, by hearing the story from their knights or when they go to study in Ostia and they are recognized and asked about the 'heroine' Sue and 'legendary' Roy
When Roy talked to his children about the past it was stories about a war, not about heroic deeds. Sue rarely talked about it
Sue never wears the extravagant clothes and jewels that she is gifted from dignitaries or nobles. She puts them in the closet. Roy just smiles at her saying he knows she doesn't like them
Roy knows exactly how to make Sue laugh and he loves how Sue's lips curve around when she smiles

365 Marvel Comics Paper Cut-Out SuperHeroes - One Hero, Every Day, All Year…
November 9th - Prince Namor the Sub-Mariner
Namor McKenzie is the king and ruler of the undersea kingdom of Atlantis. He was born as a Mutant-hybrid son of a human father (an explorer named Leonard McKenzie) and an Atlantean mother (The Princess Fenn). He was named Namor which in the language of Atlantis means ‘avenging son.’
As a product of his mixed heritage and possessing the X-gene, Namor has been bestowed tremendous powers This includes greatly enhanced strength, speed and durability, a significantly extended lifespan and the capacity to fly and swim at a tremendous speed. Despite his differences and his having a human father, Namor’s power and his being the grandson of Emperor Thakorr led to his being named heir to the throne of Atlantis.
As the human would further encroached onto the seven seas, Namor ventured out to interact with the world of man. His initial forays were aggressive as he arrived in New York City and declared the oceans off limits to mankind under the punishment of war. It was herein that Namor was first referred to as ‘The Sub-Mariner.’ Namor’s decree led to numerous altercations between Thw Sub-Mariner and the surface world hero, Human Torch (Jim Hammond).
The intrepid police woman, Betty Dean, was able to broker a truce between the two combatants. Namor was taken by Dean’s bravery and honor; so much so that it changed his mind about humans. Not long thereafter, the outbreak of the Second World War saw Namor and The Human Torch becoming allies so to battle the evil of the Axis Forces. The two were later partnered with Captain America and Bucky in forming the Allied super team, The Invaders.
Some time after the war, a villain named Paul Destine used the powerful Serpents’ Crown to instill in Namor a pervasive amnesia that made him forget who he was and where he came from. Many years later, Namor was discovered in a Manhattan flophouse by Johnny Storm of the recently established Fantastic Four. Johnny was able to recognize Namor as the Sub-Mariner. Hoping to break Namor out of his stupor, Johnny dumped him into the Hudson River. This had the effect of freeing Namor from his amnesia and much of his memory returned.
Namor made his way to an Atlantean outpost under the sea, only to discover that it had been destroyed by the US Military’s testing of nuclear weapons. Namor vowed vengeance on the surface world and attacked it, using the giant sea monster Giganto. The Fantastic Four were able to stop the Sub-Mariner. During the fight, he became instantly enamored of Sue Storm, and offered to make her his bride and queen of Atlantis. Namor carried the romantic crush with him for years and she even reciprocated the feelings for a while, which first became apparent when Namor teamed up with Doctor Doom to destroy the Fantastic Four.
Following further clashes with the super heroes of the surface world, Namor returned to Atlantis and was named king. He continued to battle with the surface world as well as fighting off undersea threats to the city like the rebel leader Attuma. Namor married the Atlantian dignitary, Lady Dorma whom he had fallen in love with. Sadly, Dorma was kidnapped and later killed by the villainess Llyra.
Although Namor often fought with the surface world there were also many times where he allied himself with human heroes against superordinate threats. He was a founding member of The Defenders, a frequent alley of The Fantastic Four and also briefly acted as a member of The Avengers. During this time, Namor purchased a corporation called Oracle Incorporated that worked toward producing clean energy whist promoting an environmentalist agenda.
Following the M-Day decimation, Namor loaned his support to his fellow Mutants among the X-Men, ultimately joining their ranks for a time. During his tenure with the X-Men, Namor became possessed by The Phoenix Force resulting in his waging war on Wakanda and sacking the Golden City.
Amidst all this, Namor also became a part of a secret cabal of luminaries known as The Illuminati who would periodically gather to address partially dire threats to the earth. He left the group in objection to their decision to exile The Incredible Hulk into outer space.
Prior to the Secret Wars event, Atlantis was destroyed by the forces of Wakanda in retribution for Namor’s attack on Wakanda whist possessed by the Phoenix Force. An embittered Namor joined the Black Order as part of a more aggressive effort to battle off the cascading incursions of alternate universes that ultimately resulted in the destruction and recreation of reality entailed in The Secret Wars event.
Namor was killed by the Squadron Supreme in the aftermath of Secret Wars, yet was quickly resurrected and all of Atlantis was recreated as well. Namor was once more seated as emperor and has dedicated himself to safeguarding his people and his realm by any means necessary.
Actor Tenoch Huerta portrays Namor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, debuting in the movie, Wakanda Forever. Prince Namor the Sub-Mariner first appeared in the pages of Motion Picture Funnies Weekly #1 (1939).

OUAT AND ME: SEASON 4
Story - The story for the first half of the season is the Frozen Saga and the story for the second half is the Operation Mongoose Saga. The Frozen Saga is about Elsa from Arendelle crossing over into Storybrooke in search of her sister Anna, bonding with Emma in the process and helping her face another Snow Queen who has a secret connection to both of them, while the Operation Mongoose Saga is about heroes and villains alike searching for the elusive author of Henry's storybook so that he can give them their happy endings.
The Frozen Saga is noteworthy for being the last time that OUAT was big in the mainstream, due to the ubiquitous nature of the Disney phenomenon it was capitalizing on not even a year after its release in theaters. And despite the initial apprehension of many, it's actually the Frozen elements that are the strongest part of this story. The flashbacks tell an interconnecting tale serving as the backstory of the present-day events much like the flashbacks of the Dark Curse Saga did, making excellent use of both Frozen and OUAT's established mythology. And the present-day story is all about the unexpected yet perfectly natural bond between Emma and Elsa, and it's honestly one of the strongest depicted friendships the show has ever had. The way the two of them are further linked through the Big Bad is also ingenious, bringing about a great feeling of cohesion to the narrative.
In fact, rewatching this arc after Frozen 2, it's kind of funny how I actually prefer it as a sequel to the original movie than the actual sequel! Like Frozen 2, this arc deals with why Elsa and Anna's parents left on their fateful voyage, the discovery of a secret from their mother's side of the family, a revelation of what the source of Elsa's power is, Elsa making peace with herself while Anna learns to be more independent and ends up marrying Kristoff, and a location called the Enchanted Forest. But it does so in a way that feels more true to the characters from the original film and avoids all of the pratfalls that Frozen 2 stumbled into. There's no over-its-head political message, no sisterly separation ending, and no Olaf.
Unfortunately, there are two subplots that put a damper on things. The first subplot starts off well enough, with Rumpelstiltskin returning to his former villainous glory as he sneaks and schemes and manipulates his way through a plan to obtain the power of the Sorcerer's Hat of Fantasia fame, but it sadly fails to stick the landing in a way that matches the build-up and there end up being no lingering consequences to it when there really should have been. The second subplot is horrendous, focusing on the increasingly skeevy romance between Regina and Robin Hood while also pushing Regina forward on a ridiculous quest to find the Author of Henry's storybook. Why? She believes some cosmic rule is preventing her from having a happy ending because she was written as a villain in the book (and not because, y'know, she was actually a villain in the past), and if she's rewritten as a hero she thinks that will change. Yes, that is the absurd idea that this whole subplot is founded upon, and the fact that everyone goes along with it as if there is an ounce of logic behind it is cringe-inducing.
Sadly, that subplot ends up becoming the plot of the Operation Mongoose Saga, which on the one hand gives Season 4 more connection between its two arcs than Season 3 had, but on the other hand it's so fucking stupid. Now, whenever it's Rumple leading around his villainous team, "the Queens of Darkness", to find the Author before the heroes can, things are fun and watchable in spite of the plot's stupidity. But whenever it's Regina and Robin's continued relationship angst or a horrendous new subplot about Snow and Charming having secretly been villains in the past by causing Maleficent to lose her child, it's tiresome and insulting. The finale, a two-parter actually named "Operation Mongoose", is highly enjoyable, but it can't fully wash away the taste of what came before it....or what it sets up to come after it.
Characters - Heroes and villains everywhere, and not always where you expect.
* Remember how in Season 3, Emma had a great character arc in the Neverland Saga but then it came to a halt in the Wicked Saga until the two-part season finale finally picked it up and resolved it? And that the Wicked Saga did her dirty by building her up as the only one who could defeat Zelena only for Regina to defeat her instead? Season 4 does kind of a repeating of these problems, except this time around they are a lot more glaring.
For most of the Frozen Saga, Emma has a great arc that's essentially her and Elsa's shared journey toward self-love; learning from each other to accept themselves and their innate powers without having to always rely on the approval of a loved one. But then, after a huge broo-ha-ha is made about how Emma must be the one to defeat the Snow Queen....she doesn't, and Anna barges in to help the Snow Queen see the error of her ways before Emma can lift a finger. She isn't even the one to save her own boyfriend from Rumple afterward, Belle does it instead. It makes Emma look like the definition of a Boring Failure Heroine.
And things don't improve for her in the Operation Mongoose Saga. Her roles are being subservient to Regina in spite of the abuse Regina had thrown her way in the previous arc, being unreasonably angry at her parents for keeping a secret from her, being vilified for daring to kill a heinous villain in defense of her son, going back and forth between being a friend or an enemy to her "dark half" Lily, and being hyped as the key to restoring reality to the way it was in the season finale...only for Regina, yet again, to end up taking that role away from her. I think it was Disney's insistence that Emma be tied to Elsa and have that arc in the Frozen Saga, because Adam and Eddy clearly couldn't care less about her.
* Snow and Charming....SIGH. In the Frozen Saga, Snow is the new mayor of Storybrooke...until the Operation Mongoose Saga, where she suddenly isn't anymore and Regina takes up the mantle again. Through both arcs, Snow reaches new levels of bad motherhood toward Emma while continuing to coddle Regina, which is not touching, it's creepy. Charming, meanwhile, is revealed to have been a long-haired coward during his shepherd days and owes his bravery and swordsman skills to Anna, which neuters just about any coolness he ever had. And then, of course, there's the egg-napping subplot from the Operation Mongoose Saga, where Snow and Charming are revealed to have stolen the egg containing Maleficent's baby, transferred Emma's darkness into it while Emma was still in Snow's womb, and then sent it away in a portal. All because of some nebulous prophesizing and interference from Isaac. And this revelation means, according to the show, that they were villains all along and thus all this time have been pious hypocrites who just do things the easy way rather than the right way. Doesn't Regina look so much better in comparison to them now? Because that's clearly the intent behind this fucking writing decision. Character assassination at its finest.
* Henry sucks, Henry sucks, Henry.....doesn't suck? Yes, for most of the season Henry is lamer than he's ever been, still being treated like a precocious kid character even though Jared Gilmore has clearly entered puberty. But then he ends up as the leading character of the season finale, and shockingly rises to the occasion. It concludes with him becoming the new Author, and this marks a turning point in Henry's character that has been a long time coming, which I will go more into detail about when I talk about the next two seasons.
* This is the season where Regina officially crossed the line into Mary Sue territory. She decides that Marian's reappearance means that she is being punished for being a villain...not because she actually was a villain, but because some Author dared to write her as a villain in a storybook, and that he needs to rewrite her into a hero so that she can get the happy ending that she's entitled to. And in true Mary Sue fashion, she warps the plot and characters around her so that nobody objects to this idea and instead whole-heartedly embrace it.
Every good guy in Storybrooke fights to help Regina get her happy ending, constantly repeating that she "deserves it" and has "come so far" even as she continues to act in ways contradicting that notion. In the end, she doesn't even need the Author since she gets Robin Hood back, gets the adulation of being a "Light Savior" who restores reality back to normal, and has Emma sacrifice herself to the Dark One curse in order to save Regina and her "hard-earned" happy ending. I think the scene that best displays the problem is in the flashback of the episode "Mother", where we see Regina in the past remorselessly murder a groom on his wedding day for no good reason, then immediately go cry over Daniel's grave since this is the anniversary of his death, and then we cut to present-day Regina mention how life always "kicks her in the teeth". Yeah, I kinda think life kicked that groom in the teeth WAY more. So where the Hell is the Author who's gonna give his poor widowed bride her happy ending?
* Rumple, for the most part, is great in this season. In the Frozen Saga, we see him going back to his Dark Curse Saga roots as he plays the role of the true villainous mastermind behind the female Big Bad, dealing and manipulating his way toward one single objective - in this case being to use the power of the Sorcerer's Hat to "cleave" himself from the Dark One dagger. And in the Operation Mongoose Saga, he steps up as the direct Big Bad who leads a team of other villains in pursuit of the Author, under the promise that he can give them their happy endings. It helps that Robert Carlyle is clearly enjoying himself; that fun is infectious.
Unfortunately, there is a problem: Rumple fails to stick the landing in his last three episodes of both arcs. In the Frozen Saga, his failure to absorb Emma into the Sorcerer's Hat seems to drive him bonkers because he then rips out Hook's heart, relying solely on commanding him to do his dirty work all while ranting and raving repetitively about how when the stars in the sky and the stars in the hat are aligned, he will cleave himself of the dagger and he will kill Hook to do so, and that Hook better enjoy so-and-so because it'll be his last and blah blah blah. It's boring and silly, and Rumple's arrogance as he keeps saying it just makes his failure that much more pathetic. And in the Operation Mongoose Saga, his suddenly revealed heart condition ends up taking its toll on him and he is ultimately unable to mount a final assault against the heroes on his own, requiring the far less impressive Isaac to do so instead. The "Light One" version of him that Isaac overwrites him with manages to put up a fight, but that's not nearly as good. Rumple as the Big Bad should have gone out with a bang, not a whimper.
* Hook remains one of the best characters in the ensemble, forced to reconcile his pirate past with his heroic present in both the Frozen Saga and the Operation Mongoose Saga. In the former, his fears of regressing allow Rumple to manipulate him into servitude, which Hook ends up fighting against until Rumple rips out his heart. In the latter, he contends with the way in which he'd wronged Ursula in the past, and with the help of Ariel (whom he also finally does right by), he is able to rectify his mistake and grant Ursula her true happy ending. I'm not really a big fan of his new modern leather jacket, though. The pirate coat was iconic!
* Following such a good Season 3 performance, Belle looks like she's on track to become even better at the end of the Frozen Saga when she finally sees Rumple for who he is and dumps his ass all the way across the town line. It was a powerful scene with some great lines from Belle, and by all logic it should have been the end of her and Rumple as a romantic pairing. They needed to be done after that, with Belle now being free to develop her character entirely apart from Rumple. But of course, Adam and Eddy would never allow that, so all she does in the Operation Mongoose Saga is date a man she doesn't actually love to soothe her heartbreak, fall passed out on the floor, have her heart stolen by Regina and then have it recovered by Rumple which causes her to inevitably crawl back to him at the end of the finale. As the next seasons will show, this damaged Belle's character beyond repair, turning her into the very Stockholm Syndrome-afflicted abuse victim that stupid detractors of the Disney version always claimed she was. This isn't a love story anymore. It's a horror story.
* Robin Hood is a regular for this season in all but title, being present for many episodes in the Frozen Saga and even getting his own focus episode in the Operation Mongoose Saga. If there was any chance of salvaging this horrendously misused character, it died the moment it showed that he still desired a relationship with Regina even after learning that she was the one who killed Marian, which would have stuck if not for Emma and Hook's time travel adventure. I'm sorry, who does that!? That is not realistic human behavior! And it only gets worse when he ends up deliberately and vocally throwing away his honor code by cheating on Marian with Regina while Marian is frozen solid and could possibly die! Oh, but Marian ends up being Zelena anyway, so all's cool. No! All's not cool! Why did this show make Robin Hood into such a lame character!? It's especially a disservice to Sean Maguire, who's a smooth and funny guy in real life and the Robin Hood he plays utilizes none of his charm.
* And then we have the regular in title only, Robin's former associate Will Scarlet, carried over from Once Upon a Time in Wonderland. Of all the screwed-over regulars the show has had, none can compare with Will Scarlet. He does little of interest in the Frozen Saga except for enticing viewers with various mysteries about who he is, why he's here and what's he up to...and those mysteries get absolutely no pay-off in the Operation Mongoose Saga, where he barely shows up and when he does is mainly just Belle's new boyfriend (whom she scarcely interacts with directly!) so that Rumple can get jealous and more determined to find the Author. In the end, Will Scarlet is a nuisance who has fuck-all to do with anything that's going on in the season, leaving viewers scratching their heads as to why he was included to begin with. I can't believe that in his last speaking appearance, the show actually has him deliver the line "I warn ya, I'm scrappy", to which Rumple replies "All right, Scrappy." It's funny because Scrappy, in the TV Tropes usage of the word, perfectly describes Will here.
So, what went wrong? Well, originally the Wonderland spin-off was meant to take place during Season 2 of the main show, with the originally filmed pilot making this explicit. So Will in Season 4 was to be the Will we have after the Wonderland Saga's conclusion, meaning somehow he'd gone back to Storybrooke and regressed back into a selfish, self-esteem lacking, seemingly heartless thief separated from his true love Anastasia / the Red Queen. Highly unoriginal of Adam and Eddy, but whatever, there were still plans to move forward with him as a character on the main show. But those plans failed to materialize and Michael Socha spent a lot of time on set doing nothing, a miserable experience which he was very vocal about afterward. And what was Adam and Eddy's excuse? "It’s just, you know, there’s just so many…there’s just so many people that it’s like, it’s sometimes hard to do that story and sacrifice Regina’s story. That’s just showbiz." It all comes down to Regina. Of course.
In the end it's for the best that the confirmation of the Wonderland Saga as taking place in Season 2 never happened in the pilot we actually got, since Will's existence in this season only makes sense now if it was happening before the Wonderland Saga rather than after, thus my headcanon will always be that Will's fateful break-in to Granny's was after it closed up on the night "Operation Mongoose" ended on rather than the night of the wraith attack.
* Elsa, Anna, Kristoff, Sven, Hans, Grand Pabbie, Oaken, the Duke of Weselton, and the former King and Queen of Arendelle are all lifted from Frozen to OUAT, and for every character that required an actor they got an actor who perfectly brought the animated movie character to life. They are also written accurately as well, with Elsa naturally being the stand-out given how much she gets to do and the bond she forges with Emma. And then there are the new Frozen characters invented for the show: Elsa and Anna's aunts - the deceased Helga and the icy-powered Ingrid, who is also the Frozen Saga's Big Bad, the Snow Queen. Ingrid, played beautifully by Elizabeth Mitchell, is essentially what Elsa might have become if Anna hadn't been so unconditionally loving toward her - her mind warped by her past pain and trauma, embittered toward all normal people, and willing to cross any moral boundary to find a family and place to belong to. Her connection to Elsa and Anna is perfectly exploited, her interactions with characters like Emma and Rumple are fascinating, and her ending where she realizes the error of her ways and sacrifices her life to reverse the damage she's done is the show's most beautiful, emotional send-offs for a villain since Rumple's death.
* The Queens of Darkness are Rumple's cohorts in the Operation Mongoose Saga who also desire the Author to write them a happy ending. The initial group is the trio of Maleficent, Ursula and Cruella De Vil, and it's later revealed that not-so-dead Zelena is also a member.
Maleficent, in spite of being played competently by Kristen Bauer van Straten and having great fashion sense in both worlds, is the weakest of the initial trio, since she is saddled with the mind-bogglingly stupid eggnapping subplot. Ursula isn't actually reflective of the Disney version of the character (Regina already did that in Season 3) and is more like a dark version of Ariel in regards to her backstory. She also isn't nearly as villainous as her peers and naturally she is redeemed rather quickly and easily as a result. And then there's Cruella De Vil, who is not a fairy tale character so everyone feared how she'd come off. Well, she's not only the best of the trio but one of the show's best villains, period. Victoria Smurfit looks, sounds and moves like the cartoon character made flesh, backed up by strong writing that makes her both funny and menacing - especially the latter when it comes to her backstory, a twisted little tale that subverts the show's usual "evil isn't born, it's made" mantra HARD.
Zelena.....SIGH. Like I said before, Adam and Eddy were dropping obvious clues that she wasn't really dead at the end of Season 3, which begged the question why they did a fake-out death to begin with. Apparently, it's because of this season's twist where, with almost no foreshadowing whatsoever, Marian is revealed to actually be Zelena in disguise, having traveled back in time with Emma and Hook and then killed the real Marian in order to take her place. She's revealed to then be pregnant with Robin Hood's child (since he slept with her thinking she was Marian...therefore, she raped him) before being hauled right on back to Storybrooke prison again. It's awful writing, salvaged only by Rebecca Mader's performance.
* We get some welcome returning characters this season, including Sydney Glass, Blackbeard, Ariel, Cora, and against all expectations August Booth. There are some interesting new side characters introduced as well, such as warlord Bo Peep (yes, really), Ursula's father Poseidon played by the great Ernie Hudson, and the Sorcerer's Apprentice, keeper of the Sorcerer's Hat and the Author's boss, meaning he naturally plays a major role throughout the season. The Author himself is Isaac Heller, played by Patrick Fischler, and he turns out to be a surprise villain who abuses his powers to influence events, which an Author is not supposed to do. While I wish he didn't take over the Big Bad position to such a degree in the finale, Isaac is still a very entertaining villain, especially when he's playing off of Regina and Rumple. His sardonic and cynical attitude also make him the perfect foil to Henry.
And then there's this season's biggest waste of a new character: Lilith "Lily" Page. There are three major problems with Lily. First of all, her origin - she's Maleficent's child that Snow and Charming kidnapped, passed all of Emma's natural-born darkness onto, and sent through a portal when she was still in an egg. It's so utterly stupid. Second, she is played by a Latino actress as a child only to have a white actress playing her as an adult. How does that work!? Finally, for all of the build-up she receives, she and her story go absolutely nowhere after she is reunited with her mother. They even make a point of giving her a scene toward the end about wanting to find who her father is, and that never gets followed up on. Even worse, the next story arc is all about Emma going dark, which Rumple had been trying to make happen throughout this arc and Lily was linked to, and yet Lily, her literal dark half, ISN'T involved!? Honestly, Mal from Descendants made a better "daughter of Maleficent" character! MAL!
Atmosphere - The Frozen Saga's atmosphere is very...Frozen-y; I don't really know another word to describe it. At least whenever it's focused on the Frozen characters. The Rumple subplot gets progressively darker to the point of becoming unpleasant, while the Regina subplot is just romantic and existential angst 24/7. These atmospheres don't fit in with the Frozen one at all, which is a testament to how Adam and Eddy are going the wrong direction with this show. Once the Operation Mongoose Saga happens, the atmosphere of the show goes insane, flip-flopping back and forth between family fairy tale wholesomeness to dark and disturbing and depressing to campiness on a level that feels off even for this show.
Episode Quality - For the most part, the Frozen Saga's episodes are perfectly fine and entertaining, although stretching out the 8th episode, "Smash the Mirror", into a two-parter was a horrible idea that cost the show terribly in the ratings. The only two standouts of badness are the 5th episode, "Breaking Glass", which introduces Lily in the flashback story while the present day story is all about Emma just having to sit back and take Regina's verbal abuse in spite of doing nothing to deserve it, and the final episode, "Heroes and Villains", whose only redeeming quality is the scene with Rumple and Belle at the town line, which doesn't even have lasting consequences. For the rest of the episode, we either spend time giving the Frozen cast a rushed, underwhelming send-off, having Rumple continue to abuse Hook while none of the idiot heroes catch on, fixating even more on Regina's angst as she has to let Robin Hood leave town in order to "save" "Marian", and watching a stupid Rumbelle-based flashback introducing the Queen of Darkness trio. In short, the episode is more the start of the Operation Mongoose Saga than it is the end of the Frozen Saga, which feels like a slap in the face to the last thing that made this show relevant to the mainstream.
And the Operation Mongoose Saga's episodes....actually got a lot better on a rewatch!? Don't get me wrong, this story arc is BAD. But when you detach yourself emotionally from the show and its characters, it becomes So Bad It's Good. It's as if the entire saga is Isaac's fanfiction; after all, it truly got started in "Heroes and Villains", and that's the name of Isaac's book in the "Operation Mongoose" two-part finale. Some episodes are unironically fun: "Darkness on the Edge of Town", "Poor Unfortunate Soul" and "Sympathy For the De Vil", but the other episodes are also fun when you just embrace how batshit crazy this whole story is and just enjoy watching how these poor actors are struggling to make something out of the material, and it's just as much fun when they fail as it is when they succeed. "Heart of Gold", the Robin Hood focus episode that reveals the Marian = Zelena twist, is one I have a soft spot for, because between Mader and Carlyle's acting, the scene of that reveal is hilarious.
Overall - Season 4 is basically the inverse of Season 2. Whereas Season 2 was horribly structured but a lot of strong material in either writing or acting was able to make it stronger than the sum of its parts. Season 4, on the other hand, has a solid structure with two inter-connected story arcs, but the material gets so increasingly shoddy that it doesn't matter. Until Seasons 6 and 7 came along, this was definitely the weakest season the show had to offer. If you don't mind a So Bad It's Good quality, then you should stick with the entire thing. But if you only want something that's actually good, then just watch all of the Frozen material.

Army of Darkness (who knew the last film of a series could be the greatest?)
[All images owned by Universal and Renaissance Pictures. Still too broke to sue]
OK, bit of a background first...
In 1981, then-unknown director/producer Sam Raimi made a horror film on what would now be a shoestring budget ($90K) that starred his childhood friend, a then-unknown Bruce Campbell...
(Thanks to Wikipedia)
The film opened to largely positive reviews (kind of a novelty in horror films at the time) It featured some graphic scenes, (and at least one disturbing one involving one of the women getting raped by a tree) but what Raimi didn’t count on was that many viewers found it funny.
in 1987, Raimi and Campbell teamed up again for a sequel (of sorts)
(Thanks again to Wikipedia)
The movie was more-or-less a re-imagining of The Evil Dead that removed all the characters from the first film except Campbell’s character Ash (no last name was ever given, but every write-up I’ve seen says it's Williams) and his girlfriend Linda. In this case, Raimi doubled down on the comedy while still maintaining the creepy atmosphere of the first. It should be noted (because it will be important) the evil in the film somehow possessed Ash’s hand, so he removed it with a chainsaw (that he later modified to attach to his stump)
Then, in 1993...
(Thanks to Amazon)
(Bruce Campbell vs.) Army of Darkness (it is kinda weird that they used the actor’s name instead of the character’s) threw the majority of the horror out the window in favor of comedy (at times slapstick, especially when dealing with the zombies Deadites) It ranks up there with Die Hard, The Princess Bride, and Monty Python & the Holy Grail in terms of memorable quotes (I’ll be sure to point them out as they come up. I guarantee you’ll know at least one, even if you don’t know the reference)
And it’s these character moments (both in the comedy and the quotability) where Campbell shines. He is pretty much an asshole everyman thrust in over his head. Thanks to this film we have been...err, “graced” with such B-movie (and B-TV) classics as Bubba Ho-Tep and The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. And who can forget his cameos in Raimi’s Spider-Man films?
Anyway, enough gushing about Bruce Campbell, on to the schlock-fest!
The movie more-or-less begins where Evil Dead 2 ends, with Ash and his car being sucked into the very vortex that he helped open to banish the Deadites from the cabin and sent back in time...
...and into the end of a battle between two factions, with Ash being mistaken as a member of the losing side (led by Henry the Red), despite the fact that he’s not dressed anything like them and a wise man advising the winning lord (named Arthur) that Ash may be a prophesied hero destined to defeat the Deadites (if that’s the case, they’re in trouble...) Ash and the remnants of Henry’s forces are dragged to Arthur’s castle where they are to be dropped into a pit with a captured Deadite within (so they’re trying to destroy the Deadites but they keep one as a pet?)
The first of Henry’s men is dropped in...
...and if the spray of blood is any indication, he would’ve likely died of high blood pressure soon if he wasn’t zombie chow already.
Eventually, Ash was dropped in. What follows is a surprisingly even fight until the wise man (for some reason) tosses his modified chainsaw into the pit. Somehow it lands perfectly on Ash’s stump and he makes short work of the Deadite. He then climbs out of the pit...
youtube
(Thanks to M. Enois Duarte)
OK, so a few notes on that clip...
1. That monologue is the first of the very quotable lines
2. Ash’s holster was empty when he got out of the pit. Where the hell did the boomstick come from?
3. How does a double-barreled shotgun fire 3 slugs without reloading?
After handling two Deadites with relative ease, Arthur realizes that the wise man may be right about Ash being the prophesied one (yep, they’re in trouble)
A bit later (after a change of clothes and at least a couple of baths), the wise man explains that the way to get home is described in the Necronomicon, which they also need to defeat the Deadites. He further explains that only the prophesied one can retrieve it. After seeing one of the castle’s servants transformed into a Deadite before them, (and defeating her after another quotable line: “Yo, she-bitch...Let’s go”) Ash reluctantly agrees, but recruits the castle blacksmith to help him build a new hand first.
(“Groovy”)
While preparing, one of the castle’s maidens, Sheila, falls for Ash and gives him a night to remember (”Give me some sugar, baby”) before he sets out the next morning.
You can tell Ash is the hero of the story, as he’s the only one on a white horse (and for some reason they didn’t bother giving him any armor)
The wise man gives Ash detailed instructions on where to find the book and the exact words he needs to recite to render the book’s power inert: “Klaatu Verada Nikto” You know, if they know exactly how to get the Necronomicon, why the hell do they need Ash?
Some time later, as Ash head to the cemetery where the book is waiting, something spooks his horse. Something...evil (it should be noted that, in three movies, you never see exactly what the evil presence looks like, but it’s enough to scare the hell out of anyone who sees it) It chases Ash to an old windmill where Ash camps out for the night.
During the night, Ash sees his face in a mirror. He suddenly remembers that his reflection came to life and mocked him in Evil Dead 2, so he smashed it. Thinking that was the end of it, he went back to his dinner. However...
...the mini-Ashes in the shards come to life, leave the shards, and attack Ash. He winds up slipping and falling on his head, knocking himself out. He eventually wakes up to find himself tied down. The mini-Ashes force his mouth open while one of their number jumps down his throat. This is somehow enough of an adrenaline rush to allow Ash to break free. He then sets about dealing with his unwanted dinner...
youtube
(Thanks to Fandango)
It’s never said what happened to the other mini-Ashes...or how “Bad Ash” has two good hands despite appearing on Ash’s right side (the side that has the prosthetic) and yet Ash is still nicknamed “Stumpy”
And yes, we have at least one more quotable line in that clip.
Ash straps Bad Ash to a table and uses his chainsaw to carve him up like a Thanksgiving turkey. He then buries the pieces (but not before Bad Ash mocks him a couple of more times) before continuing on his way.
Upon reaching the graveyard, he encounters a bit of a problem...
youtube
(Thanks again to Fandango)
And so, having cleverly deduced which is the true Necronomicon, Ash has merely to recite...the...what are those words again? Ash can’t remember the third word! I mean, he knows it begins with an N...
(Thanks to gfycat)
“Klaatu Verada N-KOFFKOFF!”
Close enough, right?
HELL NO!
Evil can’t take a joke and the graveyard comes to life (so to speak) Ash attempts to leave with the Necronomicon, but is tripped by skeletal hands and becomes the punchline of an undead Three Stooges routine...
(Thanks again to gfycat)
What’s more, Bad Ash reforms into a zombie badass...
(A face only a mother could love...)
Upon Ash’s return, the wise man forces Ash to admit he done fucked up, informing Ash that since the words didn’t bind the book’s power they couldn’t use it to defeat the Deadites (but all Ash cares about is that it can still send him home) Once Arthur’s people realize Ash won’t help them they pretty much turn their backs on him, until...
...a flying Deadite takes Sheila!
Suddenly, Ash grows a spine and vows to keep the army of the dead from coming to take the Necronomicon, including sending a message to Henry the Red to help. Arthur and his men agree to make their stand and preparations start.
But he’s not the only Ash making preparations...
Using special effects worthy of a bad Hercules movie, Bad Ash is digging up an army of skeletons and zombies to take the Necronomicon from Arthur. Then the flying Deadite shows up with a special delivery...
“Give me some sugar, baby!”
Let’s leave the two lovebirds for now and go back to Arthur’s castle, where Ash is single-handedly getting Arthur’s men out of the 14th century. First he and the blacksmith convert Ash’s Oldsmobile into a death machine. Then he teaches the wise man how to make gunpowder using a college chemistry text. Finally, he teaches basic tactics to a group of experienced soldiers. There is so much absurdity I could comment on here...
Eventually, Bad Ash is ready to attack, with his new bride by his side...
“I may be bad...but I feel...good!”
...and the army advances on the castle (with more bad special effects). Ash realizes just how badly outnumbered they are, but (somehow) puts on a brave front for the men.
Inevitably, the Deadites advance, but a volley of arrows loaded with gunpowder make short work of them, as well as flaming catapult loads...
Eventually (if nothing else due to sheer numbers) enough Deadites get through and lay a bridge across the moat so they could ram the drawbridge (why was the portcullis still up?) and are met with resistance within, though not enough to stop them. All seems lost until...
...Ash reveals his Death Wagon. Ash mows down dozens of Deadites until...
Sheila appears like a vision before him. He quickly wrecks the car to avoid hitting her. That’s when she revers back to the Queen of the Deadites and attacks Ash! Bad Ash then appears on the scene as Arthur is single-handedly defending the staircase to where the Necronomicon is held. All seems lost!
Then Henry the Red comes over the horizon and enters the fray! Unfortunately...
...Bad Ash has gotten past Arthur and is approaching the book. Ash manages to get there beforehand, so Bad Ash sends his men after him and Ash is somehow able to deal with them all (probably because they learned from the Hong Kong School of Mookdom that states only one mook can attack the hero at a time) Then it’s more-or-less down to Ash vs. Bad Ash. Then...
“You found me beautiful once...”
“Honey, you got real ugly!”
Sheila lines Ash up against the rampart and charges, but Ash manages to toss her over. Now back to Bad Ash. Ash manages to throw a spear through Bad Ash’s chest, but all it does is distract him from the book and make him angry. Ash realizes he’s out of his depth and runs, Bad Ash giving chase (at least he doesn’t have the book yet...)
The pair sword fight across the castle, but Ash is eventually disarmed (in that he lost his sword, not that he once again needs to be nicknamed Stumpy) Ash grabs a nearby torch and...
Unfortunately...
...once again all it does is piss him off.
“I’ve got a bone to pick with you!”
And now it’s Ash’s turn to fight the bad special effects, as Bad Ash is reduced to a skeleton. Bad Ash throws Ash off the wall, but somehow he’s fine, landing near a catapult full of gunpowder load (and the fuse was lit by Ash’s torch)
Meanwhile, Bad Ash has obtained the Necronomicon and jumps down to gloat (three guesses what he lands on) Ash cuts Bad Ash’s hand off (and getting the book back) and launches the catapult, ensuring bad Ash goes out with a bang.
This is enough for the army (despite still outnumbering the mortals) to retreat. In the aftermath, two things happen. First, Sheila reverts to human (good thing she was a zombie when she went over the wall or she’d be dead), and second...
...Arthur and Henry make peace.
Ash is given a potion and is given a certain trio of words to recite as he drinks it to return to his own time.
We then fade to S-Mart, where Ash is finishing telling fellow employees (played by Sam Raini’s brother Ted) his tale.
youtube
(Thanks again to Fandango)
Thus ends the tale (until the Showtime series Ash vs. Evil Dead) However, that wasn’t the way it was supposed to end...
youtube
(Thanks to kruegerfan96)
Let me know which ending you prefer.
“Hail to the king, baby!”

Date Flowers
So I finally get around to posting this, a week late, but here is my Lukanette Exchange fic! This one is for @thenovelartist, I’m so sorry that my fic is late by a few days.
@lukanette-exchange, here I am, yip yip. Ao3 link will be in the reblog.
The requirements were: Fluff is required, otherwise, open to anything: AU, aged-up, I like
Excludes: No angst (like, drama and tension okay, but don’t make the whole thing angsty)
So hopefully I did it justice!
Also, I wrote this before I found out the Snake’s powers in-show, and then I said “Nope, not in this fic. I’m keeping it to Hypnotize.”
-------------------
She brings a hand made cloth flower to each date.
At first it was small and plain, but each date, it got bigger and bigger, more complex each date.
He made a garden arrangement in his living room, the smaller, simpler ones at the edges with the larger and more ornate ones in the center.
Five years of dates, Luka thought as he stared at the floral arrangement. He had no idea where he was going to put any new flowers, he wanted to keep the flowers as private as possible.
This time, they were going to celebrate her twenty-third birthday. He nervously thumbed the ring box, before putting it into his pocket. He drove over to her apartment, and his jaw dropped as she walked towards his car.
Her qipao went from dark blue to purple, with a faint hint of a reddish hue at the hem. Silver dots - stars, Luka realized, formed constellations in the fabric. The qipao was sleeveless, her arm muscles too large for a normal sleeve, and she probably didn’t have enough fabric for a sleeve anyways. Besides, she liked sleeveless dresses, keeps the creeps away, she says. Her upper arms were adorned with silver bracelets in the shape of snakes, one had green-blue eyes, the other red. A black bracelet - from their first date - was on her left wrist. Her hair was down, grown out to mid-shoulder blade after two years of a pixie cut. In her hands was a massive red flower, the stem beautiful and long. Luka scrambled to open the door for her.
“You take my breath away,” Luka murmured, pressing a kiss to her cheeks in greeting. Marinette did the same.
“For you, love,” Marinette said, holding the flower out. Luka took it in both hands and nearly fainted from the sheer detail. The petals alternated between red and pink, some shades lighter or darker.
“You are absolutely amazing, I wish I had a gift that could compare to this,” Luka said, finding his words. Technically, I do have something that could compare but I had help to make it.
“You don’t need to. It’s something I like to do.” Marinette said. Luka smiled, and gestures for her to get in the car. Marinette obliged.
<>-<>-<>-<>
“Thanks for the dinner, Luka,” Marinette said, as they got into Luka’s apartment. Luka grinned, and picked up his guitar.
“Your birthday’s not over yet,” Luka said, beginning to strum his guitar, briefly playing her heart song. Marinette raises a brow.
“Oh?”
“You might as well had the Snake Miraculous, you hypnotized me with your art,” Luka began to sing.
“Sass helped you, didn’t he?” Luka shrugged, and gestured that he had a little bit of help with the words.
“You are the love and the light of my life, and I will always listen to your singing heart,” Luka continued, “For it brings me joy and happiness to hear you happy, and I love you even when the days have you snappy. I’ll love you forever, if you’ll have me, and even if you don’t, I still will. You taught me the greatest and purest form of love, from the battles to just standing still. And you, whether you’re Marinette or Ladybug, I will stand by your side, as Luka and Viperion, and I’ll do so even if the world ends. I sing this from my heart, with the most sincere melody that is you, I’ll love you forever if you’ll have me…”
“Always, Luper,” Marinette said, leaning in for a kiss.
“I’m not done,” Luka said, “for I, Luka Couffaine, wielder of the Snake Miraculous ask one Marinette Dupain-Chang, wielder of the Ladybug Miraculous, will you marry me?” Luka set aside his guitar and pulled out the ring box, presenting the ring.
“YES!” Marinette practically shrieked, launching herself at Luka, nearly taking him to the ground. Momentarily forgetting the ring, Marinette kissed Luka, joy rushing through her body. Luka pulled away, panting.
“The ring,” Luka gasped. Marinette chuckled.
“Sorry,” Marinette said, her hand reaching out as Luka put the ring on her finger.
“I love you, high energy and all,” Luka murmured, going back for another kiss.
“And I love you for everything,” Marinette murmured, then closed the gap between the two.
<>-<>-<>-<>
Her wedding dress is white with pinkish tones, flowing, sleeveless, and in the light, sparkle due to the hidden stars she sewed in. In short, she was drop-dead gorgeous.
The wedding is just as beautiful as the bride, and the entire venue radiates enough joy to power the entirety of France, if such a thing were possible. Compliments and well-wishes poured onto the new Dupain-Cheng couple, as Juleka threw a smile from across the room every time Luka’s new last name was said. He and Marinette jumped back onto the dance floor, the music surging in his veins, a siren to dance with his wife. Couples swirled around him, but Luka didn’t care about them. He only had eyes for Marinette.
“Mr. Dupain-Cheng,” Marinette teased, dropping into the most faux reporter voice she could manage and pressed a kiss to his cheek, “How does it feel to take on your wife’s last name instead of traditionally keeping your last name and hers changing?”
“The best decision ever, since the only other option we thought of was to go with ‘Couffaine-Dupain-Cheng - “
“Bullies would have a difficult time,” Marinette noted.
“Oh my goodness, last-name-only-basis-bullies. No wonder why you’re such a great Ladybug. You think of every possibility.” Luka whispers so that no one else could hear, but before Marinette could respond, the music changed for something with a faster tempo, and Luka couldn’t help but roll along with it, he and Marinette danced in sync, moving together effortlessly. The crowd’s hoarse from cheering them on all day, but they cheer nonetheless. Sass and Tikki enjoyed watching the festivities from afar, their chosens moving with each other. A dance floor isn’t so different from a battlefield after all.
<>-<>-<>-<>
Ladybug and Viperion were on patrol that night. Chat couldn’t make it, said that he would be too tired from his day job. The others mentioned a big event that day as well, and big days the next day. Ladybug and Viperion thus decided to step up, enjoy Paris as newlyweds and hope that an akuma wouldn’t attack that night. They rendezvoused at the Eiffel Tower ten minutes before midnight, one last look at the night Parisian skyline before heading home.
“I never did ask how Queen Bee fought in those high heels,” Ladybug said from her perch, massaging her feet.
“She was never one for practical battle outfits,” Viperion commented. Ladybug shrugged, then scooted herself across the beam to spoon with Viperion.
“Think this is safe?” Ladybug asked. Viperion glanced down at her.
“We’re the heroes of Paris, we can do this. I can sit here all night, considering I have a Ladybug on my lap. It’d be bad luck to remove her.” Viperion teased. Ladybug gave a fake gasp.
“I’d say it’d be bad luck to offend Lady Luck,” Ladybug responded, but remained where she lay, grinning at her husband.
“How would you feel if Falena released an akuma tonight?” Viperion asked. Ladybug rolled her eyes.
“I’d snap her neck myself,” Ladybug growled, “Because it’s our wedding night, and all I want to do is be with you. So sue me for being selfish on wanting to be with the ones I love.”
“I’ll be right beside you if that happens. Ready to head home?” Viperion asked. Ladybug sighed, then pulled herself up.
“I’ll race you home,” Ladybug said.
“Not fair, you have the yo-yo,” Viperion mock-protested.
“Fine, I’ll carry you bridal-style across Paris,” Ladybug said.
“Please do. Broadcast to Paris that we’re married.” Viperion said.
“You’re on,” Ladybug said. She and Viperion leaped off, Ladybug’s yo-yo snagging onto something so they could swing around as she grabbed him out of the air. Whooping, the couple swung onto a rooftop, Ladybug easily running across the rooftops, Viperion moving his body so that he was balanced and so that she could see. Easily, they dropped onto their balcony, making sure no one saw the heroes of Paris before making their way inside.
“Sass, scales rest,” Viperion said, opening the fridge as soon as Sass came out from the bracelet. Luka quickly put the small plate of chicken into the microwave, Sass eagerly waiting for his food.
“Tikki, spots off,” Ladybug said, Tikki dropped out of one of the earrings, and eagerly dove into the plate of cookies that they left.
“Good night, Sass,” Luka said as the microwave dinged and Luka pulled the chicken out for Sass. Sass mumbled good night back, mouth full of chicken.
“‘Night, Tikki,” Marinette said, gently kissing the kwami.
“Good night, you two,” Tikki said, smiling. Smiling, Luka and Marinette left the kitchen and into the darkness of their bedroom.
“A rarity, a Snake and a Ladybug,” Sass observes from his plate. Tikki smiles.
“The Black Cat and Ladybug don’t always have to be together. Sometimes they work as platonic friends. Other times, the relationship fails completely. Ladybug and Chat Noir are lucky - they get to be friends even after all these years.” Tikki says, then drifts over to Sass.
“In this day and age, love and life are easier,” Sass muses, a note of sadness in his voice. Tikki pats his back gently, as both kwamis thought of their past holders who more or less martyred themselves; such as the more well-known Joan of Arc and the lesser known Snake holders during World War II, making the ultimate sacrifices that never failed to bring the kwamis to tears.
“Indeed they are. After all, how often is it that you get Music and Creation together?” Tikki asked.
“Don’t remember the last time that happened,” Sass said, “Shall we celebrate with the other kwamis?” Tikki giggled.
“Of course!” Tikki said, swiftly darting out the apartment, Sass hot on her heels, “Race you!”
“You’re on!” Sass hissed playfully, and the two kwamis darted into the night, to celebrate with their fellow kwamis, as their holders slept, holding each other close.

“A story like mine”
It’s 2009 and I’m 14 and I’m crying
Not really sure where I am but I’m holding the hand of my best friend, Sam
In the waiting room of a Planned Parenthood
The air is sterile and clean and the walls are that not grey, but green
And the lights are so bright they could’ve burnt a hole through the seam of my jeans
And my phone is buzzing in the pocket
My mom is asking me if I remembered my keys
‘Cause she’s closing the door and she needs to lock it
But I can’t tell my mom where I’ve gone
I can’t tell anyone at all
You see, my best friend Sam was raped by a man that we knew ‘cause he worked in the after-school program
And he held her down with her textbooks beside her
And he covered her mouth and then he...came inside her
So now I’m with Sam, at a place with a plan
Waiting for the results of a medical exam
And she’s praying she doesn’t need an abortion, she couldn’t afford it
And her parents would, like, totally kill her
It’s 2002 and my family just moved and the only people I know are my mom’s friend, Sue, and her son
He’s got a case of Matchbox cars and he says he’ll teach me to play the guitar if I just keep quiet
And the stairwell beside apartment 1245 will haunt me in my sleep for as long as I’m alive
And I’m too young to know why it aches in my thighs, but I must lie, I must lie
It’s 2012 and I’m dating a guy and I sleep in his bed and I just learned how to drive
And he’s older than me and he drinks whiskey neat
And he’s paying for everything
This adult thing, it’s not cheap
We’ve been fighting a lot, almost 10 times a week
And he wants to have sex and I just want to sleep
But he says I can’t say no to him
This much I owe to him
He buys my dinner, so I have to blow him
He’s taken to forcing me down on my knees
And I’m confused ‘cause he’s hurting me while he says ‘please’
And he’s only a man and these things he just needs
He’s my boyfriend, so why am I filled with unease?
It’s 2017 and I live like a queen
And I’ve followed damn near every one of my dreams
I’m invincible and I’m so fucking naive
I believe I’m protected ‘cause I live on a screen
Nobody would dare act that way around me
I’ve earned my protection, eternally clean
Until a man that I trust gets his hands in my pants
But I don’t want none of that, I just wanted to dance
And I wake up the next morning like I’m in a trance and there’s blood
Is that my blood?
Ho-Hold on a minute
You see, I’ve worked every day since I was 18
I’ve toured everywhere from Japan to Mar-a-Lago
I even went on stage that night in Chicago when I was having a miscarriage
I mean, I pied the piper, I put on a diaper
And sang out my spleen to a room full of teens
What do you mean this happened to me?
You can’t put your hands on me
You don’t know what my body has been through
I’m supposed to be safe now
I earned it
It’s 2018 and I’ve realized nobody’s safe long as she’s alive
And every friend that I know has a story like mine
And the world tells me we should take it as a compliment
But then heroes like Ashley and Simone and Gabby, McKayla and Gaga, Rosario, Aly
Remind me that this is the beginning, it is jot the finale
And that’s why we’re here
And that’s why we rally
It’s Olympians and a medical resident and not one fucking word from the man that is President
It’s about closed doors and secrets and legs and stilettos from the Hollywood hills to the projects in ghettos
When babies are ripped from the arms of teen mothers and child brides cry globally under the covers
Who don’t have a voice on the magazine covers
They tell us to take cover
But we are not free until all of us are free
So love your neighbor, please treat her kindly
Ask her her story and then shut up and listen
Black, Asian, poor, wealthy, trans, cis, Muslim, Christian
Listen, listen and then yell at the top of your lungs
Be a voice for all those who have prisoner tongues
For the people who had to grow up way too young
There is work to be done
There are songs to be sung
Lord knows, there’s a war to be won

Arthur Dayne, Smiling Knight- Jaime’s Journey in ASOS
“The boy had wanted to be Ser Arthur Dayne, but someplace along the way he had become the Smiling Knight instead.” - Jaime VIII, ASOS
This is Jaime Lannister’s big thesis, the one that every person who’s ever read a “good to evil” arc is familiar with- you either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain.
Jaime, at age 34, has been “the villain” of the story since he was 17, and though when we first see him he is the king-like twin of the queen, we don’t really remember much about Jaime before the famous line “The things I do for love.” Another of Jaime’s theses, it’s what defines him up to his fateful bath with Brienne. Jaime Lannister is the tool of love- that is, the tool of his lover-twin, and to a lesser degree, his father. Cersei commands him to do something, so Jaime does it, even if it is tossing a seven year old out a window, or killing a ten year old girl.
Look. No one ever said Jaime isn’t one MAJORLY fucked up sisterfucker.
Jaime Lannister, as has been noted by others, is a person with a very weird combination of PTSD, total lack of autonomy, and the brain of a 17 year old. Jaime never grew past killing Aerys, right up to his imprisonment when, cut off from Cersei, he falls into a deep dark depression that he only really emerges out of when he goes back to save Brienne. During this depression, Jaime spends about a year and a half entirely within his own mind, which is why Jaime’s 33 year old mind in ASOS is significantly different from Jon’s 16 year old mind in ASOS. Jaime gets the chance to examine his past, completely uninterrupted. Cersei’s not wrong to think he came back changed in ways other than just the missing hand- Jaime had the chance to finally be older than seventeen in those two years he was away. He has changed.
Jaime, from ages fifteen through seventeen, acts as our window into the court of 281-283, the years most ASOIAF fans will recall as the years of Robert’s Rebellion. Through his flashbacks we get to see Rhaella’s misery, Aerys’s madness, Rhaegar’s galantry and carelessness, Arthur Dayne’s all-around Stellarness (heh) as we won’t see again until Barristan in ADWD. The Targaryen Court of 281-283 was Fucked Up in ways that Robert’s 298 court can really only dream of. And Jaime’s still there in his mind, still sixteen, forced to be silent and still, watcher and witness as a king rapes his queen and plots the demise of all those around him. Jaime comes away from this deeply troubled and deeply traumatized, helped along by his codependent relationship with his twin and an utter lack of validation from friends, family, and strangers. The very instant Jaime strikes Aerys down, one of the single most heroic and knightly things ever done in this series, Jaime becomes a villain in the eyes of his peers. Normally when one slays the wicked beast one becomes king and is paraded through the streets and given the fairest maid as a bride, but Jaime receives none of this. Jon sees the Kingslayer sweep off his helmet and thinks this is what a king should look like and Jaime’s mind agrees. The hell did Robert do but kill the Silver Prince, sanction the murder of children, and rape Jaime’s sister? Robert should be the villain- he stole Jaime’s prize for putting up with Aerys as long as he did! HE STOLE CERSEI!
A Smiling Knight is born- antithesis and answer for knighthood in one, gallant and chivalrous and mad.
Elsewhere, in Dorne, at the base of Rapunzel’s Tower, Ned Stark slays another Smiling Knight: Ser Arthur Dayne, the Sword of the Morning, Jaime’s mentor, co-conspirator in the kidnapping and rape of Lyanna Stark. Who knows what went on in that Tower? Lyanna is dead, her ghost nothing but a blue rose growing from a chink in a wall, the two other kingsguard dead, slain for keeping Ned from his sister, and Arthur Dayne, dead at the hands of a northern lord and a crannogman. Four humans came away from the Tower of Joy, and only one is still alive for certain to tell us what happened. The Tower of Joy is another place where fates interwove, just like the Trident, just like Aerys’s throne room, just like Craster’s Keep, the Fist of the First Men, Harrenhal, Volantis, Meereen, Old Town’s High Tower, Winterfell; the Tower of Joy is a horror story. Woe betide any whose storyline crosses its path! The Tower of Joy is a brand of death.
Fifteen years pass. Jaime does not grow, but he becomes the father of future kings, husband-in-nature of a queen, beautiful and strong and hated by all. When he rides up, all fall silent but for the whisper of Kingslayer, Kingslayer, Kingslayer. Beauty and Beast in one.
Jaime is captured by a widow and a king. Jaime is separated from his queen, and he finally begins to grow after the long winter of his mind that was the Long Summer.
ENTER BRIENNE.
Brienne the Beauty, Brienne the Blue, Brienne the Maid of Tarth! Yellow hair, the texture of straw, blows in the wind over banners of blue and rose, and men whisper Kingslayer, Kingslayer, Kingslayer once more. Beauty and Beast in one.
They loathe each other, for Brienne is not a Kingslayer. Brienne is a witness. Brienne has been the recipient of violence and hatred, misogyny and sexism, and yet she refuses to back down. “I am a knight!” Brienne cries. “WHY IN THE NAME OF ALL SEVEN HELLS WOULD YOU WANT TO BE?!” Jaime screams back, as Rhaella cries for her brother’s mercy. They battle, parrying to and fro, innocence and experience, idealism and broken dreams, Maiden and Warrior. SanSan sues for plagarism.
ENTER THE MONSTER.
Two knights are captured, bound to each other. “The Lovers” they are named, and lovers they will be, but not yet. A lion is maimed, a monstrously cruel act, leaving him bewildered and saddened. A maid is nearly raped, over and over, but for the promise of sapphires. Our heroes are led to the Monster’s Lair, an old castle, twisted and evil, a Thin Place where none ought dare to tread.
The villain monologues. The reveal comes: I am a monster because you believe me to be one. The Smiling Knight dies a little and as he dies, a piece is offered up: a thunderous whisper, a demand of validation and respect, “MY NAME IS JAIME!” roars a lion.
“Kingslayer,” sneers the world.
Jaime rides away, Jaime is reminded of his failure, Jaime decides “fuck this, my name is Jaime fucking Lannister bitches”, Jaime returns to save our fair maiden from a monstrous bear. Our heroes continue on toward the Grand Palace. The maid is too late to complete her quest. Jaime sends her off with a new sword and a new quest. “I am a knight!” Brienne cries. “That you are,” Jaime responds. He smiles as the blue maid goes off on her quest. He wonders if he will ever see her again. He will.
Jaime is alone. He sees corruption, he whispers “my name is Jaime” and counsels a young man. He sees a monster dead, he whispers “my name is Jaime” and ignores the death of his child. He sees an innocent man set to die, he whispers “my name is Jaime” and he frees his son’s murderer.
“My name is Jaime,” declares a knight. He is not Arthur Dayne yet, but he is no longer the Smiling Knight.
Jaime does good things, Jaime does cruel things. Jaime is finally growing. Perhaps he is growing towards his own destruction, but he is growing nonetheless.

As twisted and unromantic as that demand may appear, it does seem doable, right? Unfortunately, there’s an even greater moral obstruction standing between Shougo and a rich happily ever after, as one of the students attending the school is Shougo’s long lost little sister… and he has no idea which one she is! Can Shougo navigate this minefield and find a future bride without committing a major sin? And if his little sister is revealed, will it be in a manner that’s socially acceptable? Insanity is hereditary and Shougo’s about to go sibling crazy in NAKAIMO – My Little Sister is Among Them!

Manga the Week of 7/21/21
SEAN: July continues to exist, despite the best efforts of calendar cancellers. What manga do we have?
ASH: A fair bit, it would seem!
SEAN: Airship has digital-first releases for Adachi and Shimamura 6 and Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear 7. In print, they debut Reborn as a Space Mercenary: I Woke Up Piloting the Strongest Starship!, and we also get the 4th volume of The Invincible Shovel.
Ghost Ship debuts Call Girl in Another World (Isekai demo Fuuzokujou Yatte Mita). A sex worker who works at a soapland suddenly finds herself in another world! In order to return, well, if you guessed “she has to be a sex worker in this fantasy world”, you’re on the nose. This is NOT the same as JK Haru Is a Sex Worker in Another World, FYI, and I suspect is far more interested in the sex. It runs in Houbunsha’s Comic Trail.
J-Novel Club, first of all, has all the print books I mentioned two weeks ago – they were delayed due to ongoing shipping issues from the Suez Canal blockage earlier in the year.
ASH: It’s been a rather chaotic time for the shipping industry. (And just about every other industry, for that matter.)
SEAN: Digitally, we see Cooking with Wild Game 13, The Master of Ragnarok and Blesser of Einherjar 16, Tearmoon Empire 5, and the 5th and final volume of The White Cat’s Revenge as Plotted from the Dragon King’s Lap. Tearmoon Empire is essential reading for shoujo light novel fans.
Kaiten Books has a lot of new print volumes for series that were previously digital. We get debuts for Gacha Girls Corps, UzaMaid: Our Maid Is Way Too Annoying!, and The Yakuza’s Guide to Babysitting.
They’ve also got the 2nd volume of The Yakuza’s Guide to Babysitting digitally.
Kodansha has a print debut that may seem a bit familiar: Battle Angel Alita is coming out with a new translation in paperback. This is the original version from 1990.
ASH: Interesting. I’d missed that this was going to be a new translation.
MELINDA: I guess I’m kind of interested.
SEAN: There’s also more Battle Angel Alita with the 7th volume of Mars Chronicle. And we get L*DK 16, the 14th and final volume of The Quintessential Quintuplets, Rent-a-Girlfriend 7, Sue and Tai-chan 3, To Your Eternity 14, and The Witch and the Beast 6.
ASH: To Your Eternity has my attention. (And probably the attention of even more people now that there’s an anime adaptation.)
MELINDA: Oh, hm. I may have to check it out.
SEAN: Digitally we get Saving Sweets for After-Hours (Sweets wa Teiji no Ato de). It’s from Kodansha’s Palcy, and stars a tall beauty who nevertheless has no romance in her life as men seem to want her to dominate them. Her fortunes change, however, when she meets a co-worker with a secret. This may appeal to Sweat and Soap fans.
Other E-Books: Blue Lock 5, Boss Wife 2, Cells at Work: Platelets! 3, the 4th and final volume of The Honey-blood Beauty & Her Vampire, I Guess I Became the Mother of the Great Demon King’s 10 Children in Another World 4, Kakafukaka 12 (also a final volume), Ran the Peerless Beauty 9, Undead Girl Murder Farce 2, We’re New at This 8, and Will It Be the World or Her? 7.
MICHELLE: I still need to get going on Blue Lock, but huzzah for more Ran the Peerless Beauty!
SEAN: One Peace has The New Gate 6.
Seven Seas has two debuts. The Dangers in My Heart (Boku no Kokoro no Yabai Yatsu) is an award-winning manga from Akita Shoten’s Manga Cross about the romance between a boy who pretends to be an edgy sociopath and the school beauty, who he longs for and who turns out to be a bit strange herself.
ASH: I am intrigued.
ANNA: Sounds like it might have potential.
MELINDA: Hm.
SEAN: The other debut is She Professed Herself Pupil of the Wise Man (Kenja no Deshi wo Nanoru Kenja), based on the light novel which Seven Seas has coming out in a month or so. A gamer is transported to the game world he loves… but not as the old, powerful wizard he played! He’s a cute girl instead. Can he get by pretending to be his own student?
We also get The Ancient Magus’ Bride: Jack Flash and the Faerie Case Files 3, Cutie and the Beast 3, and Otaku Elf 2.
Sol Press has Redefining the META at VRMMO Academy 4.
Tokyopop has a new BL one-shot, Chéri, My Destiny! (Cheri, Unmei no Hito!). This is from Kaiousha’s Gush, and is about a candy war that turns into passion.
Viz has two debuts. The first is a Jump series, so it’s odd to see it this late in the month. MASHLE: Magic & Muscles is about a world where everyone can use magic… except our hero. So he decides to bulk up instead. This has gotten pretty popular.
The other debut is long-awaited. No. 5, a Taiyo Matsumoto title from 2001 that ran in Shogakukan’s Ikki. Viz was putting it out at the time on their Ikki website, but when the various Ikki series didn’t sell great the site kinda floundered, and this was dropped. It’s back now, in Viz Signature edition. As for the plot, well, it’s Matsumoto doing After The Apocalypse.
ASH: I am so excited to see this being released! I’ve held onto my copies of the two volumes that previously made it into print but won’t hesitate to double-dip.
ANNA: Nice.
MELINDA: Oh!
SEAN: We also get BEASTARS 13, Children of the Whales 17, Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku 9, and RWBY: Official Manga Anthology 5.
Yen On has High School DxD 4, the 5th and final volume of Last Round Arthurs, So I’m a Spider, So What? 12, and Unnamed Memory 3.
Yen Press’ debut is The Whole of Humanity Has Gone Yuri Except for Me (Watashi Igai Jinrui Zenin Yuri), a Kadokawa title from Shonen Ace about a “normal” girl who suddenly finds herself in a world where there are only women. Can she find her way back to her own world? And what is “normal” anyway? This is complete in one omnibus.
Yen Press also has Solo Leveling 2.
ASH: I’ve heard good things about Solo Leveling, I should maybe check it out before I get too far behind.
SEAN: Chunky week. Anything appealing?
MICHELLE: I’m too inundated with everything I’m far behind on to find anything that appealing, to be honest!
ANNA: Me too!!

so I'm watching Corman's FF and it's bad, but I love it and I think it's my fave FF movie and I wanted to know what you think of it?
I also love it a lot! There are so many things to love! Thank you for giving me an excuse to rewatch it, lol.
I would recommend the 1990s FF animated show if you liked that! I actually think the show’s better once you get past the first season. There are some really terrific episodes.
Some thoughts:
Reed and Victor being actual friends in college who cared about each other is good! There’s SOME justification for this in 616 canon – specifically the flashbacks in Claremont’s Fantastic Four vs. the X-Men, although other writers have seen things differently.
Why Ben, a jock, is sitting in on Reed’s advanced astrophysics class I do not understand. Was he just taking it to keep his boyfriend Reed company?
The Storm boardinghouse, run by Johnny and Sue’s mother! Which makes zero sense in 616 canon where Franklin Storm was a rich neurosurgeon until his wife Mary Storm died in a car accident, but there are certain 616 writers who didn’t get the memo (RAS – that was just…careless and sloppy on his part, but clearly he was basing it on this film).
Oh, my god, the opening scenes featuring teeny tiny Johnny with Ben and Reed are just INCREDIBLY cute. I wish 616 comics actually for once showed us how Johnny met them! How has no writer ever bothered showing us this?!!!
Cut for length.
I still hate Byrne’s ReedSue origin and am glad it is no longer canon because it never should have been.
No, but, really, tiny Johnny is the cutest, can he be in everything?
Okay, but Harmony from BTVS as little Sue is cute too.
Victor and Reed just mad sciencing and freaking everyone out.
I love how Ben sees weird scifi lightning in the sky and immediately knows it’s Reed who is responsible. And then, of course, runs TOWARDS the creepy lightning like a not very sensible person because he’s afraid Reed is/will be injured.
I honestly like Reed’s involvement in Doom’s accident! It makes everything between them seem so much more personal and real than just, “Victor’s colossal ego cannot stand the fact that there is someone else in the world as brilliant as he is.”
Reed’s horror and concern for Victor as Victor’s being electrocuted, Ben saving Victor’s life! Victor’s (supposed) death! Which Reed feels responsible for! And cries over! Ben hugging Reed gently as he cries about Victor’s death! This Reed just has so many things to feel guilty about. It’s so Reed.
“Hi, Mrs. Storm! Can Johnny and Susan go to outer space with us?” Reed needs a crew for his spaceship…so Ben talks him into showing up out of the blue and asking two people he knew ten years ago when they were little kids and who have zero experience as astronauts. How could this go wrong?
…I still find this ReedSue origin VERY unsettling.
Mrs. Storm randomly giving them their future team name pre-spaceflight is…A Choice.
I generally enjoy the Mole Man but I do not enjoy this Mole Man.
Ben falling in love with Alicia the second he sees her! Lifting her in the air like that! Reed teasing Ben about it! It’s cute! I approve.
The whole spaceflight mission being in honor of Victor!
…Reed really talks about Victor as though he’s his ex…
Doom actually looks like Doom which is a plus.
I don’t know how much I like the spaceflight accident being the result of deliberate sabotage. I think it works better in the original. Here there’s just…very little for Reed to feel guilty about, while in the 616 version, well, he wrongly calculated that the ship’s shielding was enough to keep the cosmic rays from affecting them. He put his faith in the numbers, and he learned too late that they can sometimes be wrong and that some things cannot be predicted or accounted for. In this film, he never learns that lesson.
THANK YOU FOR ACTUALLY DEPICTING THE CRASH AS A TERRIBLE TRAGEDY THAT THE FF ARE LUCKY TO HAVE SURVIVED, WRITERS, AND ALL OF THEM AS FREAKING OUT OVER HAVING THEIR BODIES ALTERED IN TERRIFYING WAYS WITHOUT THEIR CONSENT.
I like that Reed immediately picks up on the fact that there’s something off about the fact that they’re all in one piece despite crashing all the way from space. Really, they should not have survived this. Also that the FF are stranded alone in the middle of nowhere for days after the crash before they’re found by anyone.
I do like that they gave Alicia a fairly major role, even if I like what they did with her significantly less. I truly loathe the “Powerful man kidnaps and tries to coerce woman into being his bride!” trope because it’s really just saying that the man wants to rape the woman without actually saying it, and can the story arcs of less female characters be about rape – explicit or implicit, please?
The little montage where Dr. Hauptmann’s trying to take blood samples from them and growing increasingly anxious and terrified is pretty funny. Johnny freaking out EVERY SINGLE TIME he flames on is especially hilarious.
Victor…really likes creepily groping people’s faces.
Dr. Hauptmann’s inclusion is a nice nod to 616 Doom’s pet Nazi scientist.
It takes Reed far too long to piece together the fact that there’s something fishy about the people who rescued them.
I like that they have Reed do the little chin stroking thing that he always does in the comics.
I like that Reed tells Ben to knock out the prison guards with a single look and Ben immediately knows what he means.
I don’t really like Ben immediately settling on his “It’s clobberin’ time!” catchphrase -- in the comics, it was several issues before he came up with it.
....there’s....no explanation for how the FF got back to the U.S. from Latveria...did they get on a flight?
The FF’s uniforms being one-piece leotards is...an odd choice. I actually don’t know how much I like Sue making them their uniforms so soon because that happened only after a few issues in the comics -- they weren’t planning on using them initially, and from what I’ve read Lee/Kirby weren’t necessarily planning on ever giving them uniforms at all.
There also just doesn’t seem to be any discussion about them becoming superheroes here -- Sue just makes the costumes -- with a ‘4,′ btw, despite the fact that Ben had, apparently, left them -- without talking about it first. I like that the FF all jointly DECIDED to become heroes in the comics -- they didn’t necessarily have to go down that route.
Doom using a regular gun is just...odd.
Victor and his creepy face-touching make a reappearance. Poor Alicia. Apparently, she’s just in this movie to be creeped on by creepy men.
Someone needs to explain to the actor who plays Doom that less is more when it comes to hand-acting. Seriously, every syllable he says, he accompanies with some kind of gesture.
Sue and Reed confessing they love each other in front of Ben and Johnny and then being interrupted by Johnny, perennial third wheel, is hilarious.
Reed freeing himself and the others from the forcefield prisons Victor put them in by literally kicking the generator over is also hilarious.
“It’s nice to meet you” in much-too-pleased, even turned-on tone from Alicia, right after she feels Ben’s rocky skin the first time. Oh, Alicia, you and your thing for uniquely textured men. (I just got to Byrne’s run in my FF readthrough, and he’s really going hard on the “Alicia loves the Thing, not Ben” theory, which has certain implications I’m not totally sure he considered.)
The special effects -- especially for Johnny -- in this film are very hokey and very 1990s.
How is Johnny flying in space? No, really, there’s no oxygen. Never in 616 canon has he been able to fly in space.
Reed and Sue’s wedding! I love their wedding.
