Whumptober day 15- regret
Ok no colored picture today, I just don’t have the strength to color every one 😭 I kinda hate how today turned out but I simply didn’t have time to make it the way I wanted it to. I hope y’all like it tho
No warnings this is a chill one.
~~~~~
Three days have passed for the men in the inn. Resting and doing nothing physically demanding helped the others recover, with Benji walking on his feet again and Ammon acting more like himself. Rusl was feeling much better too, though he was very anxious to get out of the room (though without something to wheel him around, he had to stay in the bed). Overall, staying in one place was good for the group, but Leon was getting worried about rupees again. After what happened last time, he doubted that the others would want to go rupee hunting, but they couldn’t get kicked out. He sighed, deciding to go to the owner of the inn, hoping that he could negotiate with them to let them stay longer.
Leon traveled downstairs, being hit with loud chatter and a humid smell that made him want to retreat, but he needed to do this. He’s messed up several times lately as the men’s leader—he needed to make up for it.
As soon as he entered the restaurant, he nearly got rammed into by a young woman, who mumbled apologies and looked like she was about to have a meltdown.
“I-I’m so sorry,” she whispered, and an older, plump woman walked up to her and rested her hand on her shoulder.
“It’s ok sweetie, just keep goin’.”
Leon gave the young woman the warmest smile he could muster, and she ran off into the kitchen, leaving him alone with the other woman.
Very sorry about that, sir,” she said, patting his arm. “She’s kinda new.”
“Oh, it’s alright—”
“But ya shouldn’t be loiterin’ around here. You’re gonna get run over by us zippin’ back and forth this place.”
“Oh, I’m sorry–”
“The ‘Night and Day’ performance is comin’ up, so tons of people are visitin’, makin’ us the busiest we’ve ever been!”
“R-Right, well, I’m just looking for the owner of this inn,” Leon explained, wanting to walk away from the rambling woman, but she gave him a look and shifted her feet.
“I’m the owner you’re lookin’ for, what can I do for ya, sir?”
“Oh.” Great.
“Here, let’s move outta the way, honey,” she said, moving him away from the loud tables. When they got somewhere more quiet she put her hands on her hips and waited patiently. Leon swallowed, fearing of how she’d react to his request.
“Listen, the men I’ve been traveling with have… gone through a lot these past few days. We’ve been here for a while but… we need more time. We’re almost out of rupees—“
“You don’t have rupees, you can’t stay, sorry honey,” she cut in, looking like she’s had this conversation before.
“No no, please. A lot of them are injured and the doctors here won’t help!”
“That’s not my problem honey, sorry.”
“Please, I will do anything for you if it means that my friends have a place to stay. Anything.”
The woman paused and raised her eyebrow, looking him up and down.
“Anything, you say?”
Leon nodded, having some hope be rekindled. The woman smiled and nodded.
“Alright. Get some of your friends down here and I’ll tell ya what you can do for me.”
~~~~~~
“This is not what I had in mind!”
Leon stared at the aprons handed to him, Linebeck, and Benji, a disgusted look on his face.
“You want us to… to be waiters?”
The owner of the inn, Shirley, raised an eyebrow and rested her weight on one leg.
“Now I thought you’d do anything to stay longer.”
“I-I mean—“ Leon ran his hand through his hair and huffed. He did say he’d do anything, but he thought he’d kill monsters or kick out rude guests! Not… this!
“Listen, I said that the Night and Day performance nearby has made us busy, so busy that my only waitress is gonna break down any moment! We could use all the help we can get!”
Leon sighed and glanced at Linebeck and Benji, who both looked regretful in volunteering themselves for whatever Leon needed.
“Of course. Sorry. I’ve just… I’ve never done this before.”
Shirley laughed and punched his arm. “You’ll get used to it. You’re a strong man too, I think you’ll do fine.” Shirley suddenly grabbed all three and began to shove them out the kitchen. “Now get out there boys! We have the whole place booked!”
“Wait wait!” Linebeck yelled before they left the kitchen. “What the heck do we do?”
“Ask them what they wanna eat and drink and write it down, honey! Now go!”
The men all yelped as they were pushed out, and they stared at the crowded dining room, it looking more like a battlefield than anything. Leon sighed and attempted to put the apron on while Linebeck and Benji glared at him. Leon sighed and struggled to tie a knot, which Linebeck finished off for him.
“I… um… I’m sorry guys,” he muttered, and they rolled their eyes, splitting up to deal with the loud customers screaming at each other.
Leon had dealt with hard things in his life, but being a waiter was the hardest and most humiliating thing he had to do. Everyone was loud, rude, and disrespectful, and Leon would always give them a piece of his mind if they gave him trouble. Yet for some reason, “back-talking” the customers was a wrong thing to do. In his era, if the customers said one thing that angered the workers, they’d be kicked out. It was almost bizarre at how he wasn’t treated like a person, and instead a machine that did whatever they desired.
Unfortunately, Leon was terrible at hiding his true emotions, so whenever a customer made him upset, he made sure they knew. And he would get in plenty of trouble for it. This was why he was the first knight, and not a waiter. At least if his men were being stupid, he would tell them and they’d knock it off—here, he wasn’t allowed to call anyone stupid to their faces, no matter how much he wanted to.
By the end of the day, he was absolutely exhausted. His feet, legs, and lower back were aching, and he was relieved when it grew empty. His whole body felt like it wanted to kill him for what he put it through, and his mind kept running from everything he had to see and listen to that day. Goddesses he was so overstimulated…
“Well, I must say, I don’t regret hirin’ you guys,” Shirley said, a proud smile on her face. “This day went pretty smoothly if ya ask me.”
“That was the worst day of my life,” Leon said breathlessly, staring blankly at a wall. Shirley let out a laugh and slapped his shoulder playfully.
“Try goin’ through that with just one server. Trust me, you guys helped a lot.”
Leon nodded, at least grateful that it was over, and that he and the others didn’t have to pay to stay anymore. He’d go through that again and again for his friends.
“Lucky you guys, you’ll have to go through all of it again tomorrow at sunrise!” Shirley said cheerily, and Leon sighed. Actually, maybe he was having second thoughts.
“Well I think today was great!” Benji shouted, bouncing a little bag around. “Look at all this tip money! I must say this was the best decision I’ve ever made!”
Leon stared. “Tip money?”
“Yeah. You see Leon, when you’re nice to the customers, they actually pay you! Isn’t that something?”
Leon rolled his eyes and Linebeck stepped up next to Benji, with his own rupees in his hands.
“Yeah the money is nice, but it still sucked,” he whined, counting the rupees. “How are you so… energetic after that?”
“Not the first time I’ve been a waiter,” Benji simply explained, “though it’s been a while, but I forgot how much I enjoy talking to people.”
“Well I’m glad you’re at least enjoying yourself, Benji,” Leon mumbled, “We’re going to be doing this until everyone feels better.”
Linebeck groaned and Benji only shrugged. “Well good thing my ankle feels better.”
Leon nodded, knowing the others would not be able to handle this. It was just them three.
“Well, you boys did good today,” Shirley said, wiping her hand on her apron. “You all can work here as long as ya need. We open first thing tomorrow though, so be ready, you hear?”
Leon nodded. “Thank you. I know I was complaining earlier but you have no idea how much this helps us.”
Shirley laughed again. “Well you have no idea how much this helps me, so consider us even. Now get some rest. You’re going to need it for these next few days.”
Leon winced and nodded, getting up and leading the other two to their room. He gave a nod to the other waitress who was named Erika. She nodded back and smiled, waving goodbye as they dragged themselves up the steps to their rooms.
“Can someone tell me why we decided to get a room on the third floor?” Linebeck complained, groaning as he lifted his tired legs onto the next step.
“Well I’m sorry we didn’t get the luxurious bedroom on the first floor! We were kinda desperate!” Benji said sarcastically.
“How’d you guys get Rusl up here anyways?” Leon asked, reaching the end of the stairs.
“I dunno, Talon’s freakishly strong. He kinda scares me,” Benji answered, resting with his hands on his knees and panting.
“Well, at least you all got him up here safely.” Leon opened the door to their room, where he saw Kass and Ammon resting on the couch. The two stood up and walked over to them, worried looks on their faces.
“Where were you guys? We were getting worried,” Ammon said. Leon opened his mouth to say something but Benji walked past them and plopped himself on the couch, instantly falling asleep. Ammon looked between Benji, Leon, and Linebeck who was leaning against the doorway with a baffled look on his face.
“We found a way to stay longer,” Leon simply explained, walking to the couch and laying on the ground. “You all have nothing to worry about…”
He heard a chuckle come from someone, and the weight of a blanket being laid on top of him was felt, relaxing him further.
“Get some rest then,” he heard Ammon say, a hint of amusement in his voice, and Leon closed his eyes, falling into a deep sleep.

Broadchurch: The Next Chapter
Chapter 15 - The Weekend
Alec had planned the weekend getaway meticulously. He wanted everything to be perfect - a quiet, romantic weekend in the country where he and Anna could spend time alone together, away from work and the ever growing list of jobs around the house. But as soon as they arrived, things started to go wrong.
The weather had taken a turn for the worse, with rain pouring down nearly the entire time. The cozy little inn Alec had booked had somehow lost their reservation, leaving them scrambling to find another place to stay. The restaurant he'd hoped to take her to was closed for renovations, and even the quiet country walk he'd imagined had turned into a cold, wet trudge through the rain.
Despite all this, Anna remained upbeat, teasing Alec about their misfortunes, but he could tell she was concerned. Alec had been carrying the engagement ring around in his pocket for weeks now, waiting for the perfect moment to propose, and every time he thought about it, his nerves wound tighter. The weekend was supposed to be the right time, but nothing had gone according to plan.
By the time they were driving home, the tension in the car was palpable. Anna glanced over at Alec, sensing that his frustration went beyond the weekend’s mishaps. “You’ve been a bit off all weekend, Alec,” she said gently. “What’s really going on?”
Alec kept his eyes on the road, his hands gripping the steering wheel a little too tightly. “It just… it didn’t go the way I wanted, that’s all.”
Anna raised an eyebrow, clearly unconvinced. “Hmm, I feel like there’s more to it than that. What’s really on your mind?”
Alec's stomach churned as he pulled the car over onto the side of the quiet country road. He turned off the engine but didn’t look at her right away, taking a deep breath to steady himself. Anna watched him curiously, waiting patiently but her concern growing.
Finally, Alec reached into his coat pocket and pulled out the small velvet box that had been weighing him down for weeks. He opened it, revealing the engagement ring, and looked at Anna, his usual composed demeanor slipping into something more vulnerable.
“I’ve been carrying this around for so long,” he said quietly, his voice rough with emotion. “Waiting for the right moment… but it never seemed to come. Everything this weekend was supposed to be perfect, but nothing went how I wanted it to.”
Anna’s eyes widened as she stared at the ring, and then back at Alec, her breath catching in her throat.
“I was going to ask you properly,” Alec continued, his gaze locked on hers. “But I can’t wait any longer. Anna, will you marry me?”
For a moment, there was only the sound of the rain tapping softly against the windshield. Then Anna broke into a wide smile, her eyes filling with happy tears. “Alec Hardy, you are the most stubborn, frustrating, and absolutely wonderful man I’ve ever met,” she said, laughing softly as she reached for his hand. “Of course I’ll marry you.”
Alec let out a breath he hadn’t realized he was holding, relief flooding through him. He slipped the ring onto her finger, his hands steadying now that the question had been asked.
Anna looked at the ring for a moment, then at him, grinning. “But really? In the car, on the side of the road?” she teased, shaking her head in amusement.
Alec smirked, his tension finally melting away. “It’s not how I planned it.”
“Clearly,” Anna laughed. “But you know what? I love it. It was completely unexpected and absolutely perfect in its own way.”
Alec smiled, his eyes soft as he pulled her into a kiss. As they pulled back, Anna touched his face gently. “You really couldn’t wait, could you?”
He shook his head, still smiling. “No. I couldn’t. I thought I was going to have another bloody heart attack.”
They sat there for a while, the world outside the car feeling distant and irrelevant as they basked in the moment. The weekend might not have gone the way Alec had imagined, but in the end, it didn’t matter. They were engaged, and that was more perfect than anything he could have planned.

Let's (re)Read The Great Hunt! Chapter 39: Flight from the White Tower
Yeah, we spent a book and a half getting here, but it's already time to get going again. That's the problem with fantasy novels. You never get a chance to appreciate the scenery of anything. The best lodgings you can hope for are the same inns that all the other tourists (most of them in ominous black cloaks that hide their features) are staying at. You never get a chance to find the little restaurants the locals go to or find the attractions no one's even heard about. You don't even get a chance to avoid spoilers like I'm giving you here by saying this post spoils the whole damn Wheel of Time series. Don't keep reading if you don't want that.
We have the Ogier symbol again, because now it's the girls' turn to go through the Waygates.
Even a few men had come with petitions, standing by themselves, looking unsure about being in the White Tower, and eyeing everyone else uneasily.
Not gonna lie, if I ever had to visit the White Tower I'd spend the whole time worrying that I was a male channeler who just didn't know it yet and that at any minute the Amyrlin and the whole of the Red Ajah would descend upon me like locusts.
“This would do better for a turn in some lord’s park than a ride to Toman Head,” Nynaeve had said dryly as Egwene helped her with the buttons of a gray silk with thread-of-gold work and pearled flowers across the bosom and down the sleeves, “but it may allow us to leave unnoticed.”
People joke about Jordan's fashion obsession, but note here that these details are only important as part of the jarring contrast to the uniforms the girls were wearing previously.
Min had kept her breeches and baggy man’s shirt under a boy’s brown cloak and coat, with an old, wide-brimmed hat pulled down over her short hair. “One of us has to be the servant,” she had said, laughing.
That's not a convenient excuse at all, Min. You clearly just like men's clothes. It's a shame you forget that later because even if we just assume it's a personal preference as opposed to anything genderqueer, it's still a hell of a standout trait.
The Aes Sedai had not seen them yet, but Egwene recognized her; Takima, of the Brown Ajah, who taught the history of the White Tower and Aes Sedai, and who could recognize one of her pupils at a hundred paces.
The in-universe stereotype of the Browns as too wrapped up in their reading to notice the world is demonstrated to be false yet again. It's almost a surprise it catches on at all, with Takima likely being so many women's first introduction to the Ajah.
Also note how decayed the White Tower is that a Sitter, who by all rights should be quite busy with her job, is also a teacher, which should be another full-time job.
She found it hard to think that there had been a time when she had been eager to have an adventure, to do something dangerous and exciting like the people in stories. Now she thought the exciting part was what you remembered when you looked back, and the stories left out a good deal of unpleasantness.
Remember when Rand was convinced until Shadar Logoth that Egwene was having a great time and didn't have a care in the world? Remember when Perrin was grumbling about how she was obsessed with dancing with Aram? Those POVs sure are unreliable, aren't they
The man blinked at Nynaeve’s ring, then at her. “I was told two,” he said at last, sounding unimpressed.
Plan B failing to work here, it naturally graduates to Plan A for all three of these ladies going forward.
As they were riding out, Elayne tossed him a coin and murmured, “For your trouble, goodman. You have done well.” Outside, she caught Egwene’s eye and smiled. “Mother says a stick and honey always work better than a stick alone.”
I think Machiavelli said something like that too, though he also said the stick alone was better than the honey alone and I'm not convinced. Nynaeve of course is much too used to having to fight her way to get anything to remember that honey is an option.
By the outer side of the wall, carriages, carts, and people bustled along a street, while inside lay a wilderness of sorts. The grove had neither the tame look of a park nor the complete haphazardness of the forest depths. Rather, it seemed to be the ideal of nature, as if this were the perfect woods, the most beautiful forest that could be.
No doubt the Ogier laid it all out for the optimal growth of everything inside, a pattern that nature tries to use but is always forced away from by terrain and weather.
“Forgive us, Liandrin Sedai. They did not tell us; we overheard. We did not mean to listen to anything we should not have, but we did overhear. And we want to help Rand al’Thor, too. And the other boys, of course,” she added quickly.
"I think their names are Map and Terrin?"
Do you not think there are those who would question you when they are found to be gone? Do you believe the Black Ajah would be gentle with you just because you are heir to a throne? Had you remained in the White Tower, you might not have lived the night.
Note that at no point does Liandrin say that she did anything to stop such a thing, which would have been false but a lot more reassuring.
“You do not have to come,” Liandrin said. “You can wait here for me, safely enclosed by the fence until I come for you. Or perhaps the Black Ajah will find you before anyone else.” Her smile was not pleasant.
Then Liandrin started cackling and after she recovered began to mutter to herself about how she'd show "them", she'd show them all!
And none of the girls were the least bit suspicious. I can get Elayne (too used to Elaida) and Egwene (too eager to be the best) not getting it but Nynaeve and Min should be ashamed.
Time seemed to stretch out, as if the cold crept over her by the width of one hair at a time, and every hair took minutes.
Really it's a miracle any person or animal can cross this kind of threshold at all. It must do terrible things to your blood pressure. (Have I already said that? I should look back but I'm not going to! Suck it, readers!)
“As long as you know you deserved to,” she murmured, “then you didn’t deserve to.” Suddenly she chuckled. “Sometimes I think it was sayings like that more than anything else that created the title of Wisdom. Well, here’s another. You break your neck, and I’ll see it mended just so I can break it again.”
1. Yeah, Egwene definitely has humility at times. Haters forget that.
2. Nynaeve absolutely would. I imagine she never finds out about Rand's post-series situation because if she did she'd kill him and raise him again just for leaving everyone in the lurch like that.
“Elaida taught me a little about the Ways. She would not say much. Not enough,” she added glumly. “Or maybe too much.”
You know, considering that pre-series Elaida isn't a powermad fool corrupted by a source of evil so foul it violently reacts with actual evil, I don't think we give her enough credit for how miserable it must have been being Elayne's tutor. "What are the Ways? What's a sa'angreal? How many people can I link with? What if I did X to a ter'angreal instead of Y? Is there a weave to cure all of the injured animals I found in the last three months?"
“Elaida says the rules of nature do not hold in the Ways. At least, not the way they do outside.”
I feel like we had this infodump before. Frankly, I actually find it kinda realistic that Egwene has absolutely no memory of it now though (Ha! Now my poor memory has a point! Suck it again, readers!).
Somehow, she had thought the Shadow’s taint on the Ways would hide it from her. She could sense that taint, after a fashion. It was faint and had nothing to do with saidar, but she was sure that reaching for the True Source here would be like baring her arm to foul, greasy smoke in order to reach a clean cup.
I feel like this was probably meant to hint at some aspect of the metaphysics that came to play when cleansing the taint or maybe using Callandor, but it never quite went anywhere. It is good confirmation at least that what's gone wrong with saidin isn't something unique to men.
“Moiraine does not know so much as she thinks.” She popped the cheese into her mouth with a smile.
Liandrin isn't as right as she thinks, I suspect, but I do enjoy the smugness. What tools might she have to deal with the Black Wind herself? I doubt very much that the Forsaken have any expertise or tools for this kind of scenario, so if she does have a method, it's something the Third Age Aes Sedai came up with.
Egwene, what if, after all you are going through for him, Rand doesn’t marry you? What if he marries some woman you’ve never seen before, or Elayne, or me? What then?
Min is using the inclusive or, naturally.
Egwene made herself go along with it, saying if she did become a Green she would have ten Warders.
Well, she's one-seventh Green and one seventh of ten is one and some, which is basically the total number of Warders Egwene takes. Completely accidental non-foreshadowing arrived at through dumb math tricks and either acknowledging that Egeanin isn't much of a Warder or, more popularly with the fandom, suggesting that Gawyn is a fraction of a person - and a smaller fraction at that.
She would not let anyone glimpse the parchment she compared to the Guidings, stuffing it away with a curt, “It is nothing you would understand,” when Nynaeve asked.
Considering Liandrin's track record, we must assume that she's actually being at least Aes Sedai honest here and that Nynaeve wouldn't understand what she's seeing. So either it's very esoteric or it's at least a subtle affirmation of Liandrin's being evil and not a glaring sign of one.
“We are here,” Liandrin said, smiling. “I have brought you at last to where you must go.”
Speaking of glaring signs...
Oh wait, we're at the end of the chapter. I'm not going to talk about anything now. Next time: Damane.

We arrived at 1a to our hotel, in the rain. It is a room in a cave which is cool. But we didn’t spend much time enjoying the room, as we were tired and also knew we would need to wake up at 7:30a the next day.
Our guide and taxi driver (two separate people) met us at 9a at the hotel. Due to Gokay’s dad being famous in the tourism industry here, somehow his mom and dad convinced the dean of the local tourism school to have one of the grad students give us a two-day personal tour of the area.
He was very knowledgeable, speaks both Turkish and English, and was all around a lovely 30-year-old who’s getting married in 24 days! Had to share his “meet-cute.” His fiancé was on one of his tours, they connected on social media because he thought she was cute. After 2 years of conversing on social media, he asked her on a date… they live 12 hours (driving) apart from each other!
Luckily, it was cloudy but not raining this morning. So, we started at Devrent, a rock formation on the side of the road, which the guide called “imagination valley” because you can see a variety of shapes (e.g. camel and Virgin Mary) in the rock formations aka “fairy chimneys.”
Then we went to two sites, Zelve and Pasabaglari which were both government protected, so we paid to get in. But they were incredible! This area was covered in ash by 3 volcanoes at least 9 million years ago, which created this easy to carve, sandstone. Hence the cave hotels, and also these amazing sites of formations formed by air, water and change in temperature as well as caves dug into the rocks. If you’ve ever been to the indigenous sites near Sedona, it’s similar.
After that we went to a local pottery workshop (Alaaddin), where learned about the pottery of the region and the two types of clay they use. First red terracotta, from the river bottom. And the second was a white clay they mixed with quartz to make it strong. We got to try using their foot powered pottery wheel, with a pottery master, to make terracotta bowls. This was Gokay’s first time doing pottery!
We took a nice walk down the river walk, and then headed to lunch, at an old “kervansaray” (Caravan Palace for the music fans out there). An old inn to bring animals to and stay as a stop during a long journey. We had a fixed menu of soup, borek/appetizers, an entre with meat and rice, and then a fruit dessert. Can’t forget to mention the local wine. Due to the ash this region is great for growing wine grapes.
During lunch it started pouring but somehow the rest of the afternoon we were lucky because we were inside or in caves while it was raining and walking outside when it wasn’t.
We spent the afternoon seeing more caves and rock formations. We saw an old church built into a hill side with old frescos. This church was not government protected, so it was not in great shape. It was under someone’s current cave house that was also a cafe we had tea at as it poured rain.
Next we saw the famous “love valley” which has the most phalic shaped fairy chimneys. It was amazing because it cleared up enough for us to see one of the younger volcanoes of the region covered in snow.
We finished our day at Ortahisar looking out on the large fairy chimney has previously been a castle, because it’s so easily guarded. Sadly, a lot of it has collapsed.
We needed a nap at the end of this long day, but we went out to the local town of Urgup near our hotel and had a local dinner at “Cappadocia restaurant.” It was recommended by the guide and it was yummy.
We were going to do a balloon ride early tomorrow but with the possible rain, it got moved to Wednesday morning, so we have a chill night and tomorrow morning before we go around again.

The Remains of One Hoppin’ Hotel in Photos – Part 2
(Publisher's Note: This is the second in a two-part series that covers the history of the former Wheeling Inn hotel on the corner of 10th and Main streets in downtown Wheeling. The structure, thanks to a recent vote by Wheeling's City Council, will be demolished soon, but there was a stretch of time when the lodge's rooms were full, the restaurant was considered one of the best in town, and the views of the Wheeling Suspension Bridge were priceless. This series initially was published more than a year ago.) Lunch at the Tea Room in the basement of Stone & Thomas was special because the place was proper, despite featuring a lunch-counter kind of menu. There were napkins and polished silverware perfectly placed on each table, and the patrons were usually dressed in clothes usually reserved for Sunday services. The food, though, was prepared out of sight, and the atmosphere was far less casual than what was found inside an Elby’s or Burger Chef. The Tea Room – if space was even available, that is – was a part of “going to the city” for thousands of residents throughout the Upper Ohio Valley when they made the trek to downtown Wheeling during the 1950s through the 1980s. Main and Markets streets during those days offered a wide array of commerce with everything from hammers and nails to fine jewels and silk neckties. Most communities up and down the Ohio River were stoked by local industry and five-and-dimes like G.C. Murphy anchored the downtowns in cities like Martins Ferry and Moundsville, but Wheeling served as the metropolis for the region because, throughout the history of the Friendly City, it was where everyone came to find everything they could possibly need. That began to change, though, during the 1980s because the Ohio Valley Mall featured the new trend in the retail industry, and that was one-stop-shopping like downtowns offered but now a roof covered consumers as they strolled from store to store inside the biggest one-story building anyone had ever seen. Stores like Stones and L.S. Good suddenly became anchor stores at the mall, so the existing business owners began leaning on live entertainment more than ever. The Best Western Wheeling Inn was very popular when Jamboree USA hosted two shows each Saturday in downtown Wheeling. “That’s when we heard a lot more about what shows were at the Civic Center and the Capitol (Theatre), and the (Best Western Wheeling Inn) was packed every weekend,” recalled Lynne Walton, a former bartender at the Riverside Lounge that operated inside the hotel. “I had always heard there were a lot of Canadians that came to Wheeling for the Jamboree shows, and that was true. There were more than I imagined. “The businesses leaving downtown was a topic people talked about a lot, but it didn’t seem like it was doomsday or anything,” she said. “The hotel seemed like it was always crowded.” That’s because there was always a party in the bar and on the balconies of the former Best Western Wheeling Inn. Fabulous Fanny’s was the first bar inside the Wheeling Inn when the hotel first opened in the early 1980s, and it was a small pub tucked away just off of the lobby and behind an Elby’s. Then came the Riverside Restaurant, a popular eatery that kept the Boury family in the food service business following the 1988 sale of 73 Elby’s locations in four states to Elias Brothers. “The food was great, too,” Walton remembered. “I didn’t wait on many of the tables back then, but we had a lot of people who sat at the bar to eat their dinners while they met with their friends. “With all of the news about the hotel and the demolition that’s coming sometime soon, I’ve thought about a lot of the people I used to work with and all of the friends I made,” she added. “So many people are really sad to see it go, but the Riverside closed a long time ago and that was really surprising to me because of the view from that back deck. Everyone always wanted to sit there.” While the front signage for the Wheeling Inn and the Riverside was removed late last week, a demolition date has not been finalized by the owners, the Wheeling Convention and Visitors Bureau. “There are steps that have to be taken, but we’re moving forward with all of it so that corner can have a new future,” said Frank O’Brien, the executive director of the Wheeling CVB. “The most important step has been taken, and we’re having a lot of conversations about what could be next for that part of our downtown.” The glasses used at the Riverside Restaurant were still in place when the Wheeling CVB the hotel in mid-January. The area of the hotel where the Riverside Restaurant operated had not been utilized by the most recent owner at the time of the January 17th purchase. The inside of the former Riverside Restaurant has been heavily damaged by water over the years. This area of the former Fabulous Fannie's Lounge was used as a banquet area when the bar was closed, and most recently for storage for old mattresses and furniture. An Elby's Family Restaurant and a Young's Cafeteria did business in the hotel several years ago. Fabulous Fannie's was one of the most popular bars in the valley let alone downtown Wheeling. These two pink booths were very popular seating areas at the former Riverside Restaurant. The spa area was located in the basement of the Wheeling Inn. The hot tub was a popular destination for hotel guests for many years. When the Best Western Wheeling Open re-opened in the early 1980s, the entrance to the hotel was staffed with greeters and bell boys. Read the full article

Buffalo River VRBO
We took a little VRBO getaway trip to a cabin near Jasper, one of our favorite places only a couple minutes from the Buffalo River.
We don’t have very much good to say about the cabin… except the company we kept was really good!
The cabin wasn’t much bigger (as you can see) than a one-car garage. But even as small as it was, it took hours for the heat pump to warm the place up.
We thoroughly enjoyed the portions of the Buffalo River Trail that we hiked. Driving backroads backwoods was fun, too. Dunebuggy, the name of our car, enjoyed nearly ‘off-roading’. He wasn’t real happy about not being allowed to truly prove himself. He doesn’t quite understand that his front-wheel drive doesn’t compare with his all-wheel drive cousin.
The Buffalo River bluffs are spectacular! The trail was very nice and… we had it all to ourselves!
We visited two restaurants that have been on our list for some time. The Low Gap Café, formerly of Low Gap, Arkansas, is a multi-star chef must visit stop. (https://www.facebook.com/people/Low-Gap-Cafe/100063573190514/)
The Cliff House Restaurant was still open (closed in the winter), but not on our schedule this trip. (https://www.facebook.com/people/Cliff-House-Inn/100075442017849/)
Having been a different sort of summer and fall, the getaway was welcomed, but like most people, we’re really glad to be home.

First Day Shop Open
Visitors: 37 Sales:15.50 Books Found: 7
A lot of tourists in Wigtown today and lots of foot traffic. One customer looking for Rudyard Kipling but we couldn't find any. Later I found a book with an essay about Kipling in it. At home I got rid of my Kipling because of his rascism, so I'm glad I didn't have it.
While searching all day for the "fake book" a note says we should find for the treasure (honestly it's all I can think of now) I found a book called White Rights...I pulled it immediately, horrified. And found out it is a book about "Rights" in a legal sense, written by an Alan White. Come on publishers, what were you thinking when you manufactured that one?
Another older gentleman came in looking for Oxford Classics (you know what I mean!) I didn't but then I figured out they are the little blue books that were printed by Oxford, called World Classics in some cases. He parked himself on the floor crosslegged to examine them but told us they were Abridged and he wants Unabridged. I'm sure Shaun B. would know what he means. He didn't take any.
A group of university students from Glasgow came in and bought 2 children's books.
Frank the handyman came by and put caster wheels on the bookshelves. He emptied and restocked too, though I said I would do it. While he worked he told me and my niece from Kirkcudbright about the Martyrs. After we closed shop Michael and I walked down to see the sight.
Marilyn (whose name I couldn't catch with the accent until she rescued me by saying Marilyn Monroe!) and Lydia invited me to come and speak to their seniors group at The Smiddy on Wednesday. They need a speaker and want me to talk about how I came to the Open Book. Michael will come too for tea. She told me it will be a small group and some will sleep while I talk.
We would like to have an author's reading on Friday at 4 pm and we are hopeing that Shaun B. and any other local authors will come and read with me (MJ Malleck). Sign up in the store.
Our display window is Trains for Shaun, and inside we cound some Canadian books for our Canada table. One is a history of the Hudson Bay Company. A woman asked if we had Anne of Green Gables, but unfortunately we don't. I am sad we don't have any Alice Munro or Margaret Atwood in stock.
Ate lunch and dinner at The Cobweb when we drove to Bladnoch and the inn was closed. Yesterday two locals (Anne and Colin) both suggested the carvery down the road but we didn't know what they meant and Google Maps couldn't find a Carvery Restaurant near us. Now we know it means the Sunday meat buffet, not the restaurant's name. But we missed it.
