Today's project was a sort of proof of concept. Ever since I saw the method for making a folded brim (like in the Oslo hat), I've had the idea that the same method would make nice channels for a cinch pouch, and the idea has just sort of been brewing in my brain since then. I finally tried out my idea today, and I think it worked pretty well! I definitely have a few changes in mind for the next one, namely for neater edges on the sides of the channels, but for a trial this turned out well.
If anyone is interested, I can write up what I did, but it won't be a pattern per se (no stitch counts or anything), more of a recipe or methodology of how I did it.
#description in alt text#knitting#knitblr#trans#trans fiber artist#knit#fiber arts#i also knit this with what's supposedly worsted but acts like dk on us 2 needles so the fabric is very nice and dense#which is what i wanted but made it work up a lot slower#currently it's holding my tablet weaving cards because the pouch id sewn for them wasn't quite the right size#i mean neither is the knit pouch (even with measuring guage its narrower than i wanted) but knitting stretches more than quilting cotton#so they fell well enough and ill make a better one for my second trial of the pattern

I ended up keeping two things for myself out of everything I made last year: the samples for Retiarius and Spurdog. The latter I’ve worn out and gotten compliments on, though I’ve only really styled the former and then gave it up. Anyhow, the actual secret to wearing this type of shawl even if you’re usually very masculine and minimalist in terms of personal style is to embody the attitude that you’re about to rob a train. You get all kinds of compliments.
#which was not what i was necessarily anticipating#knitting#knitblr#wool#cotton#knit#texture#handspun#thread#the other secret is a lot of the fabric can be tucked into your zipped-up jacket and thus obscured if you’re cold and feeling shy

If you have no idea what fiber art to start with - as in, you aren't sure what you'll like, and don't have much of a clue - you should honestly start with a mixture of whatever piques your interest. Knitting needles and crochet hooks, at the least, are often very cheap per set brand-new, or you can look at secondhand stores if you want them cheaper (other fiber arts tools like looms may be more pricey, depending on what you want). If you can, look for classes such as a crafts class - a library might have something akin to this, some will have craft spaces with a variety of little crafters things.
There's sometimes this idea floating around that you are only permitted to do one craft at once - this isn't true. You are a multifaceted, complex person. It only makes sense, then, that your art is the same. Fiber art is an expression of one's humanity in its rawest form, no matter what you pick up. This goes for all art beyond the fiber arts, too! Art is an expression of your humanity. Let it express that 💛
#art#fiber art#every fiber art is good! they ALL have their place and their benefits. there is NO wrong decision to make in what medium of fiber you choos#i know for knitting and crochet especially that beginners aren't sure which to pick up...#...the secret is that you can pick up BOTH. you don't have to settle 💛#you might like one better than the other and that is okay too - but you don't have to pressure yourself to pick one#there's a handloom at this secondhand store and it's a german one so the instructions. are in german. but i want her................ loom <#i absolutely don't need it and i probably shouldn't get it but. loom. fiber. fabric#was watching a crochet vs. knitting video but i don't know if i always agree that you should pick one up and almost shun the other#there are ways to make it work out - it's going to work out!!

The best thing about Italy and Europe is that linen just- exists here. I can go buy a shitty cheap 100% linen dress like I would go to Fry's and buy a shitty cheap 100% polyester dress in America. Absolutely revolutionary for my wardrobe. I can't actually buy wardrobe enhancements because I have a carry-on suitcase, but the fact I still have the option is amazing.
#I can't wear polyester because something about my sweat clings to the fibers. I can only wear >60% natural fibers. I've slowly been#weaning all poly out of my wardrobe. The restriction helps a lot preventing impulse buys; but here my impulse buy is only restricted by $$#i am absolutely not crying over the $350 linen women's suit jacket I saw :( UGH it was GORGEOUS and GREEN. I want a linen suit so bad#but honestly it's the kind of thing I should just spend a thousand on and get bespoke I think. It'd look better and feel classier#if you're spending that much money on a thick linen knit in the first place.#Okay tag essay: but can we talk about linen knit fabrics? I've seen so many beautiful linen weaves this weekend I'm losing my mind.#I think there was a kind of Tricot or Bird's Eye knit linen simple-curve dress that blew me away. The amount of work you can do with#two colors and a fashionable knit is insane. Then you wear a jacket over it and the linen is still light enough to wick away sweat but#heavy enough to look fashionable and stay flat. There's really this talented balance of texture that shines in linen. I love linen so much#Anyway! I should've made another post for this but none of these ramblings are important lol#I'm really tired after Anacapri. and dinner. Dinner was kind of dumb. There was confusion about what I wanted. We just wanted#appetizers to share but they gave me a whole plate of octopus. Which I feel bad about eating and don't like the texture after 10 bites.#So I had to give it to dad. Long story short I didn't want to eat anything at all; I wanted to WRITE. But I didn't write. I ate.#I'm already like 10 pounds heavier than when I left lmfao. It's starting to pack on my hips. Damn you Italy!#ptxt

far enough in the lace section that my golden autumn shawl actually looks like something
#sort of regretting not using more visible beads but it was hard finding something i really liked with this yarn#now im wondering if i should try a niebling doily next. the answer is no bc i should aim to knit something i can use ever#& not make choices that encourage me to buy even more $40 skeins of pure silk rather than using the many extremely nice yarns i have#but i do enjoy knitting mildly elaborate lace and feeling smug.#box opener#knitting#i'm using dyeforyarn laceweight tussah silk and it is SO nice i'm really loving it. was worried it'd be splitty but so far not much#very soft very pleasant fabric. this thing will probably come out kind of small given that i'm down to like 3mms to get a fabric i like#but if i wear it it'll be as a scarf anyway. and it's sooo soft so who cares.#look at that fun honeycombed lace netting between the floral motifs. what more can a man want in life

I'm going to be attempting to crochet at some point soon. Maybe even later today.
Needless to say
I don't have the best hand-eye coordination
So this is gonna be. Uh. Fun.
#meg is rambling#the reason cross stitching is one of my favourite crafts is because a lot of the fabrics have holes to aim for lol#somehow my brother can just crochet just like that. he's got masses of granny squares lol#I tried knitting when I was younger and i struggled with it. now idek what i did to do it lol

this is a normal and healthy way to plan sewing projects. yes i am ribbon binding my tulle for this petti.
yes i do have uhhh. apprx 7 and a half yards of this to do. and then. that again twice over. what of it
#i acknowledge that i become unhinged abt fiber arts projects#when it's knitting it's “just doublestrand this cobweb weight 2000yd beaded shawl it will be fun.”#“also let's do that in black on black. as a treat.”#when it is sewing it is apparently “oh i can totally make this out of chiffon. what do u mean beginner friendly fabrics”#and “lets ribbon bind this tulle by having to first iron the 5/8” ribbon in half“#life with sao#sewing adventures

I actually blocked a swatch for once be proud of me
#ngl i feel iffy about how thin the fabric turned out to be but it meets gauge for the sweater im planning to knit perfectly#i compared it to my favorite sweater and it is about the same so it'll be nice no matter what#but now i kinda wish id picked a thicker yarn#i might go down a size in needles and see if it'll still make gauge just with a thicker fabric#queer knitter#knitblr#knitting#fiber art

thank god i finally fucking did a tension swatch cause this sweater would've ended up wayyyy too small
#i think it would have still fit but i'd probably have run out of yarn#i got one of those caron pounds and bigger needles i'll do another swatch today see if that'll work#and depending on how much this pattern uses i'd like to make a second out of a big cake i have#maybe cropped???#i think i'll need close to 400g for the size i want and the cake is 300g and the one i got with the needles is 500 something g so test run#patterns are so fucking expensive but i'm not at a place in knitting where i can just go for it like i can in crochet#anyway the cake is what i used for the tension swatch i'm interested to try it again but i rlly wanna just get started so i'll just swatch#the new yarn & needles today#and then go from there#it's gonna be like a loose open knit pull over situation#cause i loveeee the way they look i've been wanting to make one for awhile#but it's so intimidating cause my last sweater i made some pretty significant mistakes lmso#and i'm actually gonna have to frog that one and start over#but that's very much a dead of winter sweater#i want a summer sweater rn#anyway#oh yeah and i finished the stuffie hammock!!!!!!#ended up crocheting the ties#gonna get it spouse's help to hang it up later i hope it works#it turned out sooooo cute#i love the fabric + yarn combo#kinda worked out that i ran out of ribbon

Shirt mockup was successful. Did a truly obscene amount of bringing in seams to get here
"But Jules, wouldn't it be easier to just widen the sleeves and neck of a raglan t-shirt instead of taking in a whole peasant shirt?"
I have never done anything the easy way and I have no plans to start now
#the thought process was i have the neckline and sleeve length/width#and i don't want to go through several passes of mockups cause i'm using a woven fabric and my tee pattern is for knits#and y'know what it worked wonderfully#i won't even need to add a zipper#those center seams will be gone eventually#......maybe this is why i stopped posting wips here i immediately forgot how to shut up about what i'm doing#sophie wip

In my quest to be a mediocre knitter, I started with twenty stitches after my cast-on and ended with twenty-two
#art#fiber art#knit#described images#image description in alt#somebody described what needles you ought to use if you are a loose or a tight knitter and i didnt get it and now. i do.#my knit stitches are. incredibly tight. and it's hard on these bamboo needles#somebody else described knit as crochet but with all the loops being active and not completed and. yeah actually#i looked at the bottom of the swatch and it's really similar to the foundation chain i'd use for crochet#part of my struggle is not holding the yarn at all. i'm using english style (throwing the yarn over) but i'm not holding it at all LMAO#i still prefer crochet so far but knit fabric is very nice compared to crochet fabric#i love how colour changes look on knitted fabric. i feel crocheted fabric is a bit bulky due to the nature of crochet#crochet is still easier i think

After three years of living alone and cooking for myself I have gone from being scared of being in the kitchen at the same time as my mother used the oven and only making microwave meals because it was too intimidating to actually cook to scraping off fried egg from a pan directly with my nails not ten seconds after turning the fire off because I didn't want to clean it yet but didn't want it to dry either so 1) look at how far we've come 2) new headcanon that Santa burns himself on that grill because after awhile you really do just unlearn a fear for cooking appliances I guess
#still very stupid but my mother also recently literally welded a string of fabric into her finger by accident#because she was just too used to it being part of the process of the thing she was knitting for me#so I'm willing to accept that's just how these things are and you lose common sense with familiarity and it goes well with my headcanons#he was so small when he started to take care of Akane there's no way there wasn't a learning curve and that he didn't get some scars from#doing certain domestic activities badly at first and then from being so used to it that he doesn't take proper care#my roomie has lived on her own and cooking for a lot longer and one of these days I don't remember why#but she was holding a pot fresh off the oven and was like wait is it still hot? and put her hand under it to check#and I was like what?? don't do that!#....and then proceeded to also hold my hand under it to check because something in my brain was like I don't think so but let me see#she bullies me for that to this day <3#Void fala aí
