Westway Lab: um laboratório para novas descobertas

Tendo já começado o Espaço de Criação e de Conferências PRO em Guimarães, na passada quarta-feira, 10 de Abril, o Westway Lab começou o seu Festival no dia 12 de Abril. As hostilidades foram abertas no Centro Cultural Vila Flor (CCVF) por Luís Severo, seguindo-se Bardino, Silly, Riça e Capicua. No sábado, o dia começou com uma série de concertos abertos à comunidade e em diversos locais da cidade, nos quais se incluíram Remna, Sónia Trópicos, Grand Sun, debdepan, J.P. Coimbra, Corvo, Melquiades, Franek Warzywa e Młody Budda e Trigaida. A partir das 21h30, os concertos concentraram-se de novo no CCVF, começando com Júlia Mestre. Conferência Inferno, UTO, Unsafe Space Garden e NewDad foram os actos seguintes. Para encerrar, o Westway Lab organizou uma Festa de Encerramento, no CAAA, que contou com os DJ Sets de A Boy Named Sue, Rodrigo Areias e Jorge Quintela.

A honestidade de Luís Severo

Foi, então, no Auditório do CCVF que o Festival WestWay Lab teve o seu início e tomou forma pelas mãos de Luís Severo, que sozinho ao piano nos agraciou com a honestidade e sensibilidade com que escreve os seus temas. Após as duas primeiras músicas a solo no piano onde nos falou sobre amores e desamores, certezas e incertezas, angústias e felicidades, Luís Severo agarrou a guitarra acústica e Catarina Branco tomou o piano e apoiou na voz.

Foi em “Cedo ou Tarde” que se juntou um coro de duas vozes aos dois artistas já no palco para nos expressar que viver é um desafio, não só connosco mesmos, mas também face aos tempos que se impõem. Porém, como explicou Luís Severo antes de começar: “este é um daqueles dias que é bom” e, até ao final da sua performance sentida, o artista teve, ainda, tempo para estrear duas músicas novas, uma delas de nome “Insónia” que como disse “não a preciso de explicar, o seu nome fala por si mesmo”.

A conjugação inteligente e intrigante entre o jazz e a electrónica dos Bardino

No Café Concerto do CCVF, os Bardino subiram ao palco para nos fazer dar um ‘pézinho de dança’ fora da caixa. Foi para apresentar o seu último disco “Memória de Pedra Mãe”, mas não só, que o trio constituído por Nuno Fulgêncio (bateria), Diogo Silva (baixo) e Rui Martins (teclados e vozes) desafiou a ‘classificação em caixinhas’.

Caracterizando-se por uma fusão de eletrónica, rock e jazz com nuances de krautrock, fusion jazz ou ambiente electrónica, os Bardino fazem-nos viajar no passado, no presente e no futuro, mas estando sempre presentes no momento.

E, do mesmo modo que o seu recente álbum se inicia com a frase “Tenho uma história bonita, tenho uma história linda (…)”, o trio portuense ecoou perante uma plateia surpreendida e curiosa com a audácia que uma linda história contou.

Silly: um coração que tanto almeja e se agiganta a cada melodia

Foi com o “Intro” encaixado no segundo tema “Encontrar”, tal como acontece no seu álbum de estreia “Miguela”, que Silly iniciou a viagem por um coração que tanto almeja e se agiganta a cada melodia. Com uma aura complexa demais para ser colocada por palavras, Maria Bentes (Silly) e Fred – que também colaborou na concepção deste trabalho – fizeram-nos viajar com as rimas reflectidas e sentidas e com a conjugação perfeita entre as batidas, os teclados, a guitarra e todo o ambiente criado pelo inteligente jogo de luzes e fumos.

“Coisas Fracas”, “Silêncio”, “No Que Procurei”, “Água Doce”, “Solitude”, “Herança”, “Cavalo à Solta” ou “Inquietação” foram alguns dos temas percorridos pelos artistas, acrescentando-lhes sempre diferentes nuances ao registo do álbum e, assim, ganhando ainda mais vida. Entre “Miguela”, Silly presenteou o público com um cover de “Prognósticos” de B Fachada, um tema que a artista admite cantar como se tivesse sido da sua autoria, de tal sentir a canção como sua.

E, nesta espécie de bolha em que estivemos imersos imperou e prosperou a tranquilidade e a delicadeza mesmo quando a viagem relatava um mundo nem sempre feliz ou nem sempre leve ou o quão intranquilo, inquieto e perdido um ser humano se pode sentir. No entanto, a mensagem é evidente: em toda a parte é possível encontrar um pouco de amor e um pouco de compreensão e é a isso que nos devemos agarrar mesmo quando temos que seguir “em frente diante o vento forte”.

E foi mesmo com “Vento Forte” que Silly e Fred encerraram esta experiência imersiva que durou pouco mais de 45 anos, que nos permitiu estar noutra realidade e onde “Miguela” é mais e mais um pouco de nós e do que sentimos e nos é tão complicado expressar.

Os vegetais delirantes de Franek Warzywa e Młody Budda

Foi através de pouco mais do que um sampler, de uma guitarra e da voz que Franek Warzywa e Młody Budda deram uma performance surpreendentemente enérgica que cruzou os mais diferentes géneros musicais de uma forma “esquizofrénica”.

Tendo-se tornado virais no TikTok e tendo ganho notoriedade entre o público após um concerto explosivo no OFF Festival, o duo polaco não esconde que canta sobre temas como os vegetais, nomeadamente batatas, mas também sobre o seu computador que está constantemente a avariar. Havendo ainda tempo para falar sobre o sol e sobre o mau tempo que tanto se sente nas terras de onde são oriundos.

No CAAA apresentaram os seus visuais relativos a este tal computador que tanto avaria e durante cerca de 40 minutos cruzaram géneros musicais que rapidamente transitavam: num momento soava a pop, no seguinte estaríamos perante nuances de metal core e, no mesmo tema, poderia ainda existir tempo para uma sonoridade mais electrónica. Mas, rock, math rock, techno são também opções e energia e entrega não lhes faltou!

Trigaida: a herança búlgara cruzada com a electrónica

Bem sucedidos no Got Talent da Bulgária de 2022, Trigaida são um fenómeno recente na electrónica contemporânea da Bulgária. “Elate” é o álbum de estreia da banda e é uma fusão única entre o folclore tradicional búlgaro e a música eletrónica.

Parte das influências são também o drum‘n bass, o dubstep, o trip hop, oferecendo assim sonoridades que chegam ao jazz contemporâneo, à world music e ao neoclássico e, tal se fez sentir no CAAA, em Guimarães.

Com Ivan Shopov enquanto produtor e MC, Asya Pincheva na voz e Georgi (Horhe) Marinov na gaita de foles e didgeridoo, os Trigaida surpreenderam o público que não deixou de expressar o seu entusiasmo e de dançar ao som desta herança combinada com o contemporâneo.

Julia Mestre: uma contadora de histórias nata

Com um ambiente intimista, o público presente no Auditório do CCVF foi plateia atenta e deliciada perante a doçura de Julia Mestre. A vocalista de Bala Desejo fez-nos viajar pelos temas do seu mais recente álbum “Arrepiada” (2023), mas não só.

Acompanhada apenas pela sua guitarra e através da sua voz, a cantora brasileira contou histórias. As história que criaram as suas músicas e as suas letras, como foi caso de “Chuva de Caju” que nos fala sobre o encontro da artista com Ana Caetano; “do do u”, um romance da artista com alguém que esteve pelos Estados Unidos da América durante três meses e veio a falar um misto de português com inglês; ou “Deusa Inebriante”, que foi a forma que a Julia Mestre encontrou para lidar com o facto de não ter conseguido despedir-se de um familiar próximo que caiu num “sono profundo” em período de covid-19.

“el fuego del amor”, “Sentimentos Blues” ou “Sonhos e Ilusões” que, no álbum de 2023 tem a participação de MARO, foram mais alguns dos temas que Julia Mestre nos ofereceu com a gentileza e sensibilidade que lhe é tão intrínseca.

Conferência Inferno: um exorcismo às ansiedades

Foi para apresentar o “Pós-Esmeralda”, mas sem esquecer temas do seu primeiro LP, que o trio do Porto se juntou no Café Concerto do CCVF. Com o punk e o new wave no seu ADN, Raul Mendiratta, Francisco Lima e José Miguel Silva entregaram-nos as suas canções negras que exaltam os espíritos.

Com a energia punk sempre em crescendo e os ritmos new wave como uma constante, a ironia, a agonia e o êxtase que tanto é característica do trio não foram excepção nesta performance. Foi uma ode a este pandemónio em que vivemos que prova que, no desespero, entre chorar e dançar, dancemos e berremos e exorcizemos as ansiedades.

“Perdi a conta dos passos, não consigo contar. Encontro a múltipla no escuro sempre a pairar. Encosto os drunfos à parede, eu não consigo parar. Cedo-te múltiplo futuro sem vacilar. Somos todos corpos. A distopia pródiga”, ecoaram os Conferência Inferno para encerrar o ritual.

O je ne sais quoi dos UTO

Presenciar os UTO foi como entrar num espaço celestial. Neysa Mae Barnett e Emile Larroche constituem a dupla parisiense que, como tem vindo a ser habitual neste festival, não é simples classificar. Não é só pop, mas também não se reduz a vagas noções de electrónica.

Assim, o trip hop, o dream pop, o techno ou o synth pop ajudam a criar um ambiente fantasmagórico e alienígena deste duo que teve como seu álbum de estreia “Touch The Lock” (2022) e que, segundo o Pitchfork é “prismático”, no sentido em que é uma introdução perfeita ao maravilhoso e estranho mundo de Neysa e Emile, onde a imaginação e a liberdade imperam.

Através da voz, dos sintetizadores e da guitarra, os UTO abriram-nos a porta ao seu mundo vasto e preenchido de coisas que não se vêem, mas tanto se sentem.

A exaltação humorística dos Unsafe Space Garden

Oriundos de Guimarães, os Unsafe Space Garden tratam as confusões existenciais de forma peculiar e entre os ingredientes estão o humor, a energia, a cor, o absurdo, o caos e a intimidade e, tudo isto, faz que o momento seja muito mais do que só um concerto.

Alexandra Saldanha, no sintetizador e na voz; Nuno Duarte, na guitarra e na voz; Filipe Louro, no baixo e na voz; Diogo Costa, no sintetizador e nos samples; José Vale, na guitarra; e João Cardita, na bateria tornam a sua sonoridade única, percorrendo sonoridades mais electrónicas com timbres mais jazz que chegam ao rock, post-rock e, até mesmo, ao post-metal.

Em cinco anos, lançaram quatro trabalhos discográficos: o EP “Bubble Burst” (2019), o LP “Guilty Measures” (2020), o LP “Bro, You Got Something In Your Eye - A Guided Meditation” (2021) e, o seu mais recente, “Where’s the Ground” (2023) e somaram uma avalanche de concertos em território nacional, incluindo o Tremor e o Primavera Sound Porto. E a ideia é simples: comunicar o que se sente sem pudor e com uma pitada de ironia e de humor, pois faz parte aceitar toda a confusão e arrebatamento que na vida acontecem e de que tanto falam nos seus temas. O concerto no Café Concerto do CCVF não foi diferente.

NewDad: comunicar o que não tem outro modo de ser expressado

Da Irlanda directamente até Guimarães, os NewDad vieram apresentar o seu novo e álbum de estreia “Madra” (2024), uma fusão magnífica entre o dream-pop, o post-punk e o shoegaze que pretende comunicar aquilo que não tem outro modo de ser expressado e os NewDad fazem-no de forma exímia, como se sentiu na Box do CCVF.

É explorando emoções profundas que a cantora e guitarrista Julie Dawson expressa o que lhe corre dentro da alma: serena, mas ciente do furacão que se pode viver por dentro. A ela se junta Sean O'Dowd (na guitarra solo), Cara Joshi (no baixo) e Fiachra Parslow (na bateria) que ajudam na criação de um ambiente que nos faz entrar numa catarse para também nós lidarmos com as nossas lutas emocionais: “See, it's easy for you. It's easy for you to forget. Because you're not in my head. You're not in my head”, exalta “In My Head”, por exemplo.

“Madra” (a palavra irlandesa para cão) foi apresentado de fio a pavio e demonstrou a evolução sonora da banda que existe desde 2018, explicando na perfeição os concertos lotados na sua tour no Reino Unido e na Irlanda. Porém, na sua estreia em Portugal, Julie quis fazer algo novo e ofereceu-nos uma versão mais intimista de “White Ribbons”: apenas ela e a guitarra, encerrando uma performance que comprova que os voos elevados de NewDad ainda estão apenas a começar.

Westway LAB: A Criatura está viva e desperta consciências… (Festival, dia 2) | Reportagem (parte 3)

Como habitualmente no Westway LAB, ficou reservado para o último dia a tournée por diversos espaços na cidade, neste passado sábado, 15 de abril. Uma programação apelidada de ‘City Showcases’ levou concertos ao Convívio Associação Cultural, ao Oub’Lá, ao Tribuna e no Ramada 1930. Todos estes locais recebem frequentemente atividades culturais.

Com os ‘City Showcases’ a terem início de 30 em 30 minutos optei, este ano, por seguir um determinado roteiro em vez de percorrer todos os concertos. Tal permitiu assistir tranquilamente às atuações escolhidas. De fora ficaram Isa Leen, Ledher Blue e Yann Cleary. Como já vi os dois primeiros, a escolha tornou-se simples, dei prioridade aquilo que ainda não tinha visto ao vivo.

Sábado à tarde - City Showcases

Beatriz Bronze mais conhecida por Evaya tocou no Convívio Associação Cultural a partir das 15h. Era o primeiro ponto do roteiro vespertino e foi aqui que iniciei a minha caminhada pelo centro de Guimarães. A produtora, compositora e cantora portuguesa teve uma atuação com alguns percalços, devido a dificuldades técnicas, e procurou sempre que tal não a distraísse. Efetivamente tal foi difícil… A artista deu o seu melhor e quando tudo estava a correr suavemente deu para ter um gostinho do seu trabalho. Ritmos eletrónicos experimentais conjugados cuidadosamente com as suas vocalizações. Evaya utilizou os seus sintetizadores e fez ainda questão de manipular as luzes. O seu eletro-pop está em evolução e é um nome a ter em atenção.

Às 16 horas cheguei ao Ramada 1930 para deparar-me com alterações que não estava a contar. Pela primeira vez o palco mudou para a zona descoberta. Embora estivesse encostado ao muro com sombra para os músicos, para o público era menos cómodo. A tarde estava calorenta e solarenga pelo que ficar ao sol e assistir aos Cave Story era uma tarefa desaconselhada. Daí que as pessoas procuraram ficar resguardadas nos sítios que davam sombra.

Cave Story na tarde de sábado no Ramada [mais fotos clicar aqui] A banda das Caldas da Rainha fez ainda uns ajustes sonoros de última hora e iniciou a sua atuação com um atraso de 10 minutos. 'Punk Academics' de 2017 foi o álbum mais abordado. Naturalmente 'Wide Wall, Tree Tall', lançado bem recentemente, teve devidas referências. Gostei bastante de ouvir os Cave Story, para mais ter a oportunidade para ouvir novos temas, eles que tocaram "Sing Something for Us Now" e "Ice Sandwich" desse último lançamento. Cumprida a missão no Westway LAB a banda de Gonçalo Formiga seguiu para Aveiro para outro concerto no mesmo dia. Ao Convívio Associação Cultural voltei para o momento de maior expetativa da tarde cujo início ocorreu às 17 horas. Aí tocaram os X IT, um projeto com músicos que se conheceram neste mesmo festival no ano passado nas residências artísticas.

X IT em estreia total [mais fotos clicar aqui] São eles o produtor português Tiago Sampaio (St. James Park), o pianista holandês Daniël Tomàs (Daniël vd Duim) e a vocalista holandesa/alemã Élénie Wagner (Eliën). A atuação foi empolgante e o eletropop que estrearam em Portugal é altamente melódico e dançante. A voz de Élénie é, sem dúvida, a cereja no topo deste bolo musical.

A viagem dos concertos pela cidade terminou, num regresso ao Ramada 1930, às 18 horas para escutar os Ezpalak. Esta banda de rock alternativo chegou à Cidade-Berço vindo de Zestoa, do País Basco espanhol. Este quarteto anda a promover ‘Hortz Aina Hots’, o seu trabalho discográfico mais recente. Juanjo Berasain é o vocalista e possuidor de uma energia bem própria do estilo musical.

Juanjo Berasain e os Ezpalak em estreia total em Guimarães [mais fotos clicar aqui] Mesmo com letras cantadas em euskara a atuação não deixou ninguém indiferente. O espaço, ao contrário de 2 horas mais cedo, já não estava ao sol. Foi uma performance bem concorrida. Durante os quase 50 minutos de atuação, algumas dos temas mais recentes dos Ezpalak não faltaram à chamada, como por exemplo, Kontran (a 1ª tocada), “Zu Izan” ou “Itzala”. Sábado – Noite 2 do Festival

Nacho Vegas foi o primeiro artista a tocar, a partir das 21:35h, nesta segunda e última noite do Westway LAB em 2023. O cantautor, um nome conhecido da música popular no país de nuestros hermanos atuou a solo. "La Septima Ola" (primeira tocada), "Ser árbol", "Ciudad Vampira" ou "Que te vaya bien, Miss Carrusel" (a última interpretada) foram alguns dos temas que o artista espanhol trouxe a Guimarães. Com letras em espanhol, acompanhado da sua guitarra clássica e da sua voz (sem efeitos) rubricou uma atuação sóbria, porém que nada de novo trouxe, ao Grande Auditório Francisca Abreu.

No cardápio seguiu-se algo radicalmente diferente. Segui as escadas em direção ao Café Concerto do Centro Cultural Vila Flor para La Furia, o projeto de Nerea Loron. Esta rapper, vinda do País Basco, esteve em residência artística no festival e neste último sábado voltou ao palco para apresentar-se em nome próprio.

La Furia numa atuação bem enérgica [mais fotos clicar aqui] Esteve acompanhada de uma DJ e de duas bailarinas. "Estrellitas en el Cielo de Tu Cama", foi a primeira interpretada sendo que " Que Se Muera la Pena", “Eh!” ou “Ladrido” fizeram parte também da setlist. Numa atuação surpreendente, altamente irreverente e bem animada fez um manifesto em favor do feminismo e de um papel de assunção da mulher na sociedade. Letras apimentadas com mensagens fortes, mensagens essas passadas também nas comunicações em espanhol nas pausas entre temas para uma audiência que preenchia o espaço.

A lusitana Rita Vian, tem vindo a ter mais louvores e reconhecimento desde 2021, ano em que lançou o EP ‘CAOS'A’, e que a levaram a festivais como o NOS Primavera Sound, Bons Sons ou Vodafone Paredes de Coura. Ela foi a seguinte nesta noite de sábado. Pela primeira vez apresentou-se ao vivo em Guimarães, neste Westway LAB 2023. Houve uma belíssima enchente para ouvir esta lusitana e notou-se que esse magote de pessoas estavam curiosas. Rita Vian começou com o tema "Plana", eram já 23h. Início do concerto com muita pouca luz e em tons de azul, algo que ocorreu várias vezes ao longo da atuação. Ela deambulou de um lado ao outro do palco, tal como é-lhe habitual. Fez-se acompanhar por João Pimenta Gomes, responsável pela parte eletrónica. Não faltaram temas bem conhecidos como “Sereia”, “Tudo Vira” ou "Purga".

Rita Vian num dos momentos mais profundos da sua atuação [mais fotos clicar aqui] Houve até momento para desempenhar uma canção especial, um dueto que os avós costumavam cantar. A mostra original da mistura da modernidade do universo dos sons digitais com a tradição lusitana marcam o som diferenciado de Rita Vian. Além de “picar” a géneros como o R&B, as influências no fado e noutros elementos da música popular portuguesa são claras. A atuação foi sólida e bem construída, ela que foi comunicando entre canções.

Catarina Munhá munida de cavaquinho foi acompanhada por 2 músicos que tocaram violoncelo, piano e percussão. Ela que apresentou canções de 'Animal de Domesticação', o seu álbum de estreia. A artista fez questão de frisar que são “canções para cada divisão da casa”. Com uma presença simples, delicada e atenciosa tocou o seu repertório do qual não faltou "Cópia Pirata", tema que já vai tendo algum airplay nas rádios nacionais.

A jovem Catarinha Munhá no Café Concerto do CCVF [mais fotos clicar aqui] Fiquei com a sensação de a querer ver e ouvir novamente noutro panorama. Tal como na noite de sexta-feira, aconteceu novamente o ruído de conversas um bocado acima do desejável… O Café Concerto acabou por ser, para alguns, um ponto de passagem para uma bebida e relax entre atuações.

Um dos momentos âncora do Westway LAB em 2023 aconteceu no concerto final com a performance dos Criatura. Foi a minha estreia com este sui generis projeto nacional, felizmente e finalmente, direi eu. A formação desta banda é uma amálgama de muitos músicos, estiveram 10 em palco numa conjugação bem eclética. Todos eles muito competentes. Amálgama quase infindável de instrumentos, muitos deles tradicionais como adufe, bandolim ou gaita-de-foles. Com o tema "Anunciação" a festa foi devidamente aberta e o público esteve correspondeu de forma colaborativa.

Gil Dionísio, uma força da natureza [mais fotos clicar aqui] Gil Dionísio, foi o mestre das cerimónias, um show dentro do show. Com a sua personalidade irreverente e irresistível levou toda a gente a seguir atentamente as letras bem curiosas das canções. Igualmente a “beber” das suas mensagens de intervenção social. Foi, literalmente, um “bate o pé” coletivo.

Edgar Valente (músico também faz parte dos Bandua) participa com a sua voz e toca também teclados e adufe ajudou igualmente à animação na qual não faltaram canções como “Da Praxe”, “À Mãe” ou “A Noiva”. A formidável atuação terminou com “Tempo” e saí com uma sensação wow deste concerto. Outra das coisas que ficou na memória é a incrível voz de Gil Dionísio.

O Westway LAB teve mais uma edição de sucesso entre os dias 12 e 15 de abril. Alguns concertos incríveis, um ou outro nem por isso, o que importa ressalvar é a alta qualidade geral do evento e da sua organização. Mais uma vez as Residências Artísticas deram resultado a showcases bastantes agradáveis. Após a 10ª edição é preciso assinalar que o festival está cada vez mais a cumprir o seu objetivo e o público geral, ao esgotar o evento, revela que está atento passando uma mensagem bem definida.

The 405 goes to Westway LAB in Guimarães, Portugal

Guimarães is the birthplace of the Portuguese nationality. Statues and murals around the exquisite old town centre proudly display it, a sense of history that does not weigh the place down but enthuses it with historical immortality. Nestled in the rolling hills of Northern Portugal, it is one of Europe’s most beautiful secrets, a town that remains largely untouched by the crawling hegemony of the modern West. It has also played host to one of Europe’s most quietly respected annual music showcases for the last five years, and this sixth installment is no exception. We took it upon ourselves to get down to Guimarães to pick out the highlights of Westway LAB 2019.

Not unreasonably, Portuguese acts occupy more than their fair share of the lineup, offering an impressively varied snapshot of the country’s current musical output. For such a historical site, what could be more appropriate than one of the foremost representatives of Portuguese folk music, Marta Pereira da Costa. A master of fado, the mournful, working-class traditional music of this country, she leads her quintet through a stirring set that, although intricately arranged, erupts into emotional outbursts at several points. Da Costa is the first and currently only professional female fado guitarist in the world, her Portuguese guitarra fluttering with butterfly wing beauty, her dexterity hard to keep pace with even as just a listener. The setting – a sharply upholstered classical auditorium – rises to the occasion, its acoustics elevating every note, especially during a maudlin interpolation of ‘Summertime’ or the rousing, skipping final piece that has the audience spontaneously clapping along. It is an authentic experience, a blend that has been perfected over hundreds of years.

One of the weekend’s most rapturous receptions is earned by The Black Mamba, the Portuguese/Brazilian R&B/jazz/funk outfit that appears in their expanded eight-piece lineup on Saturday night. Led by the restless Pedro Tatanka on guitar, they barrel through decades of musical history, his guitar soaring and crying, usually at the same time, channelling a path somewhere between Eddie Hazel and David Gilmour. We get sax solos that shoot fountains into the sky and bass solos that damn near create cracks in the ground; we get the wiry space guitar of Prince on ‘It Ain’t You’ and the steaminess of Al Green on ‘I’ll Meet You There’. They are a walking encyclopedia of the last fifty years and Guimarães laps up every second.

Westway LAB has a tradition of bringing together artists in first-time collaboration, allowing them to present their results in a debut performance at the festival. One such example this year sees a coming together between João Pascoal and Sofia Ribeiro, who together produce an electronic combination that expertly takes its time in burying its way into your cortex, slowly seizing its tentacles around your temples until it is moving you at the pulse that it has decided it right for you. The slow build is in fact a gradual, imperceptible hypnosis in preparation for the great catharsis of the payoff, they keys and bass synths eventually exploding in tantric climax. Not bad for a first time.

One of the features this year is the showcasing of new Canadian talent, with a group of artists playing on Friday evening. The endearing Saskatchewan country singer Megan Nash is the most likeable stage presence of the festival, regaling us with tales of her small town existence, whilst The East Pointers bring their party from Prince Edward Island, their fiddle and banjo led mix calling to mind a traditional Irish ceilidh, with songs about shipwrecks and wildfires alongside a rousing version of Nirvana’s ‘In Bloom’. A much more classic vintage of rock is brought to mind by Tribe Royal, complete with Allman Brothers hair and 70s AOR riffage. A step above your average bar band and a step below Almost Famous’ Stillwater, they may not be at the vanguard of anything, but they are easy crowd pleasers.

The clear standout of the Canada Country Focus is Les Deuxluxes, a riotous duo that high kick their way into the hearts of Westway LAB. Working with double the conviction in an attempt to overcome the extremely un-rock’n’roll surroundings of the aforementioned classical auditorium, with its soft seats and bourgeois ambience, singer Anna Frances Meyer is a constant provocateur, galvanising the sedentary audience into something mildly approaching a frenzy. Meyer and partner Etienne Barry duel on guitar, Barry hammering a kick drum with his foot all the while; they draw from glam, psych and punk but they operate at their own wavelength, a spiky, angular cool that earns a legit standing ovation as they leave the stage.

Away from Portugal and Canada, Westway LAB plays host to an international bill. The focus artist spotlight on Thursday night falls upon Italy’s Violetta Zironi, a singer-songwriter with the poise of Marianne Faithful and the tunefulness of France Gall. She sings in English throughout, mining the truthfulness out her songs despite their apparent simplicity. She jokes of the modicum of fame that having a song featured in the German version of The Bachelor brought her before embarking on a version of Billy Joel’s ‘She’s Always a Woman’ at the keyboard. She debuts multiple new songs across the set too, a confident and winning performance.

The Los Angeles ambient experimental composer Tashi Wada represents the U.S. on the lineup with the weekend’s most gradual and involved set. Featuring the great Julia Holter on keys and vocals, Wada presents a set of glacial horror, calling to mind the work of Krzysztof Penderecki, only perhaps at an even more languorous pace. The trio conjure a sense of complete freedom on stage, the drummer using the handle end of his sticks more often than the tip, Wada himself cracking out the bagpipes on occasion to add an extra sense of chaos. At one stage the drummer adjusts his seat and it is hard to tell whether he is playing it as an instrument. At another there appears to emerge a conversation between a bell and a triangle from opposite sides of the stage. The further we descent into the avant-garde jungle, the more that some of the passing crowd decide that there might be a preferable alternative. For those ready to engage, however, there is something transformative about this performance, a metabolism shifter in the tradition of the Steve Reich and Lamonte Young experiments of yesteryear. It is the sort of set that proves that Westway LAB is a place of artistic freedom, a space where just about anything might happen. Just don’t tell too many people, it’s still a secret.

INES Showcase Festival Network announces 104 talented artists!

Several thousand bands and musicians from the participating 12 countries (Austria, Germany, Luxembourg, Great Britain, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Sweden, Spain, Slovenia, Hungary, Czech Republic) have applied for the second year of the INES#talent support program. Now the 104 new #talents have been announced - including Mavi Phoenix, Hope and ShaoDow!

Applications were being accepted until July 31, 2018 which were available to all bands and musicians from the participating countries. From all applications received, the festival partners have now nominated the best young musicians from their respective countries for INES#talent 2019. And now that three new members have been added into the network since this past June, INES#talents from Hungary, the Czech Republic and Italy will officially be there for the first time!

With INES#talent in 2019, the most promising young artists in Europe will have the chance to perform at up to 12 showcase festivals and thus present themselves to an international audience, but above all to the international music industry.

A total of over 100 slots will be available exclusively for the sponsored artists at all participating events in the coming year.

Westway LAB: E tudo a Linda Levou... (Festival, dia 1) | Reportagem (parte 2)

Após 2 noites a assistir às criações originais dos artistas que estiveram em residência artística chegou a primeira noite do festival propriamente dito. Pela primeira vez, passes gerais e bilhetes diários esgotaram antes do início da parcela paga do evento. Esta jornada inaugural presenteou-nos com 5 concertos e todos eles de géneros musicais bem distintos uns dos outros. Pode-se dizer que foi uma viagem agitada numa montanha russa.

Tal como gosto de fazer, quando é o início de um evento, foi altura para observar o recinto, a organização e as pessoas. Perceber diferenças para o ano transato. Faltavam ainda 45 minutos para o concerto de abertura por isso deu tempo.

A troca de passes e bilhetes diário durante alguns minutos foi demorada e esteve parada, estávamos apenas a 40 minutos de distância do primeiro concerto da noite. Alguns problemas técnicos estavam a impedir o andamento do processo. Enquanto presenciei não se formou uma longa fila, pelo que pelo menos durante o tempo que pude observar não causou demasiado transtorno. As pessoas iam afluindo ao Centro Cultural Vila Flor aos poucos e poucos.

Zona de acesso ao festival [mais fotos clicar aqui] Vamos a diferenças para 2022. Deixou de existir o palco exterior no pátio, uma opção positiva em vários sentidos, sendo um deles, um maior conforto para as pessoas. O pórtico de boas vindas estava lá, o da entrada principal, a diferença é que o controlo de entradas passou a ser feito somente à porta das salas.

Esta noite de 14 de abril iniciou-se com o compositor, multi-instrumentista e produtor Bernardo Fachada no Auditório, com lugares sentados disponíveis. O público foi entrando aos poucos e o concerto de abertura da programação principal teve uma sala bem composta. O artista de Coimbra apresentou-se com uma visível boa disposição. A boa receção do público aos temas de B Fachada animou ainda mais o músico e tal como afirmou na parte final “Disseram que era para dar tudo em 45. Dei tudo em 45” referindo-se ao tempo previsto para a sua atuação. Efetivamente assim foi e marcou indelevelmente esta edição de 2023. Melhor início era difícil.

B Fachada com uma excelente atuação [mais fotos clicar aqui] O álbum 'Rapazes e Raposas' foi bem focado durante a sua atuação sendo que as primeiras três que tocou foram "Namorada", "O anti-fado" e "Canção de rejeição". Munido da sua Viola Braguesa e de caixa de ritmos, Bernardo Fachada cantou o seu “cancioneiro” mais recente para uma audiência animada e a vivenciar a atuação. Ao ponto de ser irresistível para algumas pessoas: deixaram as suas cadeiras e deram uns passos de dança. Algo que aconteceu, por exemplo, de forma mais evidenciada ao 4º tema: "Padeirinha". A sua performance evoluiu, a voz tem também algum reverb em certas ocasiões e as batidas conferem um som mais tradicional às suas canções.

"Adoro vir ao Minho… "Aqui está toda a gente e é uma maravilha" afirmou B Fachada e pela reação das pessoas e certamente ele há-de continuar a vir à nossa bela região. Ele que até voltou ao palco para um encore, já depois de ter tocado "Prognósticos".

Redoma, a dupla vinda do Porto [mais fotos clicar aqui] Carolina Viana (cantora e rapper) e Joana Rodrigues (produtora) são o duo feminino Redoma e quando já estavam em cima do palco do Café Concerto a plateia estava quase despida. O público estava ainda retido em B Fachada. A atuação destas artistas podia ter sido atrasada um pouco… Ambas vestidas de negro, com Joana sentada a fornecer os sons e Carolina de microfone na mão partiram para a sua performance. Entre rap e, por vezes, uma espécie de ritmo de spoken word foram apresentando os seus temas, o EP ‘Parte’, que contém 6 temas, foi apresentado na íntegra. Deu para desfrutar um pouco deste projeto que não conhecia. Estas meninas do Porto tiveram ainda duas dificuldades, o som não estava no seu melhor e quando o espaço ficou mais preenchido virou uma espécie de lounge… Na frontline ouvia-se muita conversa de fundo, algo que não foi nada agradável. “Poço”, a primeira faixa de ‘Parte’ , foi a última apresentada.

De seguida foi altura para estrear a Box, o palco em cima… do palco. Lá tocou Ana Lua Caiano em formato one-woman show. Este talento emergente era a minha grande curiosidade da noite. As indicações super positivas desta jovem artista confirmaram-se. Aos 23 anos demonstra, ao mesmo tempo, uma delicadeza e uma maturidade deveras impressionantes. Entre loops, bombos, sintetizadores, melodias de voz e de teclas parece que faz a festa toda: lança os foguetes e apanha as canas. Ela que une melodias e ritmos tradicionais portugueses com a modernidade dos elementos que a eletrónica permite.

Ana Lua Caiano, um concerto muito esperado [mais fotos clicar aqui] “Olha a Maria” foi a primeira da sua setlist e o mote perfeito para a apresentação de ‘Cheguei Tarde A Ontem’ o seu Extended Play de debute. Ao som de "Ando em Círculos" houve algum público feminino que não se faz rogado e deu trabalho às pernas. Lá à frente as coisas estavam bem animadas. "Nem mal nem queres" e "Sai da frente, vou passar" temas que não podiam faltar tiveram o olhar e a audição atenta de Hélio Morais dos Linda Martini. "Mão na mão" foi mesmo a última interpretada pese embora os pedidos de encore do público e da própria Ana ao backstage para voltar… A performance foi coroada de êxito e adocicou-me a curiosidade.

Mais uma moedinha, mais uma voltinha, eis que regressei ao Café Concerto. Em palco já estavam os Azar Azar, este é o projeto de Sérgio Alves, produtor e teclista portuense. Ele que trouxe consigo banda completa. O jazz, o soul e funk são os géneros mais percetíveis do som deste seu projeto e maioritariamente instrumental. O single de avanço "Dreaming Ways" não faltou e teve em Helena Neto, convidada especial, e que fez uso da sua voz. Com o aproximar das 0:30h houve uma significativa debandada de pessoas: aproximava-se a hora da Linda Martini. Assim também o fiz, após ouvir atentamente alguns longos minutos de Azar Azar.

Azar Azar, em formato banda [mais fotos clicar aqui] Após 20 anos na presença dos portugueses os Linda Martini já não necessitam apresentações. Eles que neste 2023 estão em digressão com a tournée “Merda & Ouro”, uma celebração do 20º aniversário.

Quando atuam dão tudo: por entre a exigência constante de Hélio Morais, o impecável compromisso de Rui Carvalho (o incrível substituto de Pedro Geraldes e novo membro da banda), a sensualidade rock de Cláudia Guerreiro e a determinação vibrante de André Henriques. Foi o único concerto que teve apoio visual de uma tela gigante atrás do palco da Box. O que assisti foi a uma total sintonia entre público e banda numa altura de pico de adesão. Já era expectável.

A sensualidade rock de Cláudia Guerreiro [mais fotos clicar aqui] “Eu nem vi” foi o tema de abertura e logo aí "sem ti sou só eu" foi cantarolado com bastante vontade. Os temas passavam e o empenho dos fãs não esmorecia. Foi mesmo um concerto intenso e sentido de forma especial. “Putos Bons”, “Amor Combate”, “Belarmino Vs”, “Ratos” e “Rádio Comercial” não faltaram na setlist. O quarteto regressou ao palco respondendo à solicitação dos fãs e tocaram "Dá-me a tua melhor faca" num encore que não estava mesmo previsto. A noite terminou com altíssima nota e com público bastante satisfeito.

MDARD Announces Value Added and Regional Food Systems Grant Project Awardees

LANSING, Mich. – Today, Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Director Jamie Clover Adams announced nine projects awarded funds under the competitive Value Added and Regional Food System Grant Program.

"Michigan continues to assert itself as a leader in food and agriculture both nationally and globally, and these grants clearly reflect that," said Clover Adams. "Not only do these projects offer opportunity for additional growth in revenue and jobs, but they also demonstrate the vision, ambition, and leadership of our state’s incredible food and agriculture companies."

The department received 62 proposals with requests totaling more than $6.6 million. Of those, MDARD awarded the following nine projects leveraging more than $1 million in matching funds:

Campbell Milarch Vines LLC of Copemish - $140,400. Produce and market the first locally sourced and cold-hardy vinifera “Truly Michigan Vines” for Michigan vineyard owners and grape growers.

Michigan Sugar Company of Bay City - $100,000. Construct a liquid feed plant in Carrollton in partnership with Westway Feed Products, adding value to beet molasses.

Rainbow Packing Inc. of Escanaba - $100,000. Expand facility to keep pace with meat processing needs in the Upper Peninsula.

Sprout Urban Farms Inc. of Battle Creek - $65,000. Increase food hub producers and double sales of regional produce through wholesale markets.
