The truth is out there! When the people fear their government, there is tyranny; when the government fears the people, there is liberty. What country can preserve its liberties if its rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve...

MDARD’s Plant Pathology Laboratory Achieves Nation’s First Core Accreditation from the National Plant Diagnostic Network
EAST LANSING, Mich. — The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) Director Tim Boring today heralded a monumental achievement as the department’s Plant Pathology Laboratory became the nation’s first to be granted accreditation status under the National Plant Diagnostic Network (NPDN) Core Accreditation Program. This accreditation went into effect on October 1, 2024. The laboratory earned this accreditation by successfully developing and implementing a comprehensive quality management system, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to meeting high standards in diagnosing plant diseases such as boxwood blight, Beech leaf disease, bacterial ring rot of potatoes and many others.
“This national achievement sets the bar for producing high-quality plant diagnostics for Michigan’s nursery and agricultural industries,” said Boring. “This accreditation is a testament to MDARD’s commitment to continuous improvement and quality plant diagnostics.”
The NPDN includes 70 diagnostic labs across the United States working to identify and respond to new plant pests and pathogens threatening agriculture and the environment. The NPDN created the Core Accreditation Program to provide an overarching framework and quality management approach. Core Accreditation ensures NPDN labs will meet quality standards and enhance professionalism, strengthening the state of readiness in performing timely and accurate detections while reducing the risk of exotic pathogens and pest establishments.
To achieve accreditation, the MDARD’s Plant Pathology Laboratory underwent extensive evaluations, including audits and compliance checks in areas such as standard operating procedures, record-keeping, and equipment maintenance. After months of careful review, the lab received accreditation for all its diagnostic services. The laboratory tests for plant disease organisms including bacteria, fungi, phytoplasmas, and viruses using a range of techniques, including microscopy, culture/isolation, serological tests, and molecular tests.
The Plant Pathology Laboratory is responsible for identifying plant diseases and pests regulated by MDARD, providing three primary services: diagnostics, export certification, and surveys. It also collaborates with the Michigan State University Plant Diagnostic Lab, U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), Michigan Department of Natural Resources, and other researchers to develop unified responses to new invasive plant diseases.

What makes a good neighbor?
What makes a good neighbor? I have been reading everyone’s response to this question and you all sound like this article: https://housenotebook.com/8-qualities-of-a-good-neighbor/ That being said, here is my take. A neighborhood is a family. Look at the relationships you have within your own family & now relate it to how you behave with your neighbors. Everyone answered this question…

What aspects of your cultural heritage are you most proud of or interested in? Now there’s an interesting question? What is my cultural heritage? 🤷🏽‍♂️ I am your typical American mutt born of ancestors from every continent of the 🌎. Here, in the UP of MI, I would have to say our culture is old worldly. Mainly Scandinavian with German, French, Polish, and Native influences. We farm, hunt, are…

What could you do more of? I have been trying to get more people to donate to our local animal shelter. Alger County Animal Shelter is a no kill receiving nothing from the state, county, nor city on taxes. They fund themselves entirely. Buddy is one special dog. Here’s his story via Alger: This is Buddy. Buddy came to our Shelter very emaciated and just wanting love and to be cared for. Buddy…

What are your favorite types of foods?
What are your favorite types of foods? Pastys. I live in the UP of MI. This is an every meal staple here. You need 2-10 pounds of hamburger. 2 pounds make about 3 pasties. 5 pounds of potatoes & 2 pounds of carrots if you are making towards 10, but really for 3 you need 3 potatoes & 2 carrots. You can dice them, shred them, however you want to cut them is fine. Salt & pepper to how you like. You…

How are you feeling right now?
How are you feeling right now? So many feelings right now. It has been a day! First let’s discuss the fact no one wants to do the speed limit and all believe the roads here are race tracks. Why go 55 when you can go 155? We are seeing more accidents with this mindset. Then yesterday, I saw people in a brown truck following a yellow semi with a huge E on it driving through the old Super One Food…

How would you design the city of the future? I asked Grok and this is what I got. Definitely not what this gamer would choose. 🤣 I do love the forest and wood stoves. Cooking over a bon fire is amazing fun. Fishing along side the river bank without a care in the world. Gardens and trees to eat freely. Cabins. Yeah. In other words, no city. 🤣🤣🤣 Ah, designing the city of the future? Let’s get…
