More about her here:
The Ubena of Bremen is a replica of a 14th century Hanseatic cog found in the mud of the River Weser in 1962. The sensational find was reconstructed piece by piece (more than 2,000 individual parts) at the German Maritime Museum in Bremerhaven, measured and preserved for posterity in a conservation bath (800,000 litre capacity with a mixture of water and polyethylene glycol) for 15 years, and is now open to the public.

Nordenham in the Wesermarsch district of Niedersachsen (Lower Saxony), Northern Germany, sits at the mouth of the Weser river on the Butjadingen peninsula on the Nordsee (North Sea). The large seaport of Bremerhaven is located on the other side of the river. The Midgard-seaport in Nordenham is the largest private-owned harbor in Germany.
Nordenham evolved from the town of Atens due to the efforts by merchant Wilhelm Müller who traded cattle and sheep to England in the late 1800s. Some of the oldest parts of town are the old villages of Blexen, Einswarden, and Atens. Bishop Willehad, a Northumbrian-born missionary of the Frisians, died in Blexen in 789, which is commonly accepted to be Blexen's year of foundation. Nordenham's town founder Wilhelm Müller later built his farm house and a restaurant on the same site, which have since been demolished.
Roy Uwe Ludwig Horn (*1944) is the city's most famous son as a member of "Siegfried & Roy" of Las Vegas fame. He grew up in Blexen but left town rightafter school and supposedly never returned after his remarkable breakthrough as a magician. In the movie "Siegfried & Roy: The Magic Box" (1999) his youth was briefly mentioned, but the landscape shown did not bear any resemblance to the real thing.

Voyage Repair in Ship Repair: Ensuring Safe and Efficient Maritime Operations
Voyage repair is an important part of ship maintenance. It helps keep vessels safe, efficient, and aligned with international standards during their journeys. These repairs happen while a vessel is still on a voyage or transiting via channels/straits. These repairs help technical managers to reduce the idle time for repairs.
Unlike conventional dry dock-based repairs, voyage repairs can rectify defects without interrupting the shipping schedule, preserving the vessel's operational integrity and meeting critical delivery deadlines.
Importance of Voyage Repair
Voyage repair plays a vital role in maintaining a vessel's integrity and performance. By addressing issues promptly during a voyage, ship operators can prevent minor problems from escalating into major faults that could jeopardize safety and lead to costly repairs.
This approach ensures that ships remain operational and can continue their voyages without significant interruptions.
Reduced Downtime: Time spent at sea can be long. Going back to port for small repairs can be costly and wasteful. Voyage repairs allow for operational continuity.
Cost Efficiency: Fixing the ship while still working can reduce docking fees. It also lowers labor costs in big ports and lessens the financial impact of delays.
Improved Safety: Fixing problems quickly while at sea makes it safer. This helps protect the crew, the cargo, and the environment. This helps reduce risks linked to operational failure.
Key Components of Voyage Repair
Periodic Inspections: Regular inspections are essential to monitor the condition of critical ship components such as the hull, engines, and electrical systems. Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) techniques, including Ultrasonic Testing (UT) and Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI), are employed to detect hidden flaws without dismantling parts of the ship.
Troubleshooting and Repairs: When malfunctions occur, voyage repair teams quickly identify and rectify the issues. This may involve repairing engine parts, fixing leaks, or addressing electrical failures to ensure the ship's systems operate smoothly.
Condition Monitoring: Continuous monitoring of ship components helps track their performance over time. Technologies like vibration analysis and ultrasonic testing predict potential failures, allowing maintenance personnel to schedule repairs before problems become severe.
Predictive Maintenance: By analyzing data from condition monitoring, predictive maintenance strategies anticipate when components will need repairs or replacements. This foresight reduces unexpected breakdowns and optimizes maintenance schedules.
Best Practices for Effective Voyage Repair
Effective Planning and Scheduling: Detailed planning ensures that repair activities are well-coordinated and do not disrupt the ship’s operations. Flexible scheduling accommodates unexpected changes in repair scope, ensuring timely completion.
Skilled Workforce: A highly trained and experienced crew is essential for successful voyage repairs. Continuous training programs keep technicians updated with the latest repair techniques and technologies.
Compliance with Regulations: Adhering to international maritime regulations and standards ensures that repairs meet safety and performance criteria. This compliance is crucial for avoiding legal issues and maintaining the ship’s certification.
Voyage Repair in Ship Repair: A Comprehensive Guide
Voyage repair is an essential practice in the maritime industry, allowing repairs to be conducted while a vessel is still at sea. This method helps reduce downtime and keep ships operational, avoiding costly delays. The ability to perform repairs while the vessel continues its journey is crucial for maintaining a competitive shipping schedule, minimizing risks, and controlling costs. In this article, we’ll explore the technical aspects of voyage repair, its advantages, challenges, and future trends.
1. Importance of Voyage Repair
Shipping companies face high demands for efficiency and reliability. Any breakdown at sea can lead to delays, penalties, and even cargo loss. Voyage repair offers a solution to address problems without returning to port, making it a critical strategy for modern shipping operations. The key benefits include:
Operational Continuity: Repairs can be made while the vessel is still underway, ensuring that schedules remain intact.
Cost Efficiency: Avoiding port calls for minor repairs saves money on docking fees and labor costs.
Safety: Fixing issues as soon as they arise ensures the safety of the crew, cargo, and vessel.
2. Types of Repairs Conducted During Voyages
Several types of repairs are common during voyages, each serving a critical function in maintaining the vessel’s operation:
Mechanical Repairs: Engines, pumps, and compressors often require adjustments or part replacements. Common tasks include engine repairs, shaft realignment, and pump maintenance.
Electrical Repairs: Electrical systems, including power distribution and navigation equipment, can malfunction during a voyage. Repairs may include fixing wiring, circuit breakers, and key navigational tools like radar and GPS.
Structural Repairs: These include minor fixes to the hull or deck, corrosion control, and even underwater repairs using specialized teams or ROVs (Remotely Operated Vehicles).
3. Methods of Performing Voyage Repairs
The execution of repairs during voyages involves a combination of onboard crew expertise, specialized technicians, and advanced technology:
Onboard Teams: Ship crews often include personnel trained to handle routine repairs. For more complex tasks, technicians can be flown to the ship at sea or meet the ship at its next port.
Mobile Workshops: Some companies provide mobile workshops, equipped with tools and spare parts, that can be deployed to the vessel’s location.
Condition Monitoring: Modern vessels use condition monitoring systems to detect issues before they become critical. This data allows repairs to be scheduled at the optimal time during a voyage.
Underwater ROVs and Divers: When structural or hull repairs are necessary, ROVs and divers can perform inspections and repairs in deep waters.
Benefits of Voyage Repair
Enhanced Safety: Regular and timely repairs reduce the risk of accidents and ensure that all ship systems function correctly.
Increased Reliability: Ships that undergo voyage repairs are less likely to experience unexpected breakdowns, ensuring smooth and uninterrupted voyages.
Cost Efficiency: Proactive maintenance and repairs prevent costly emergency fixes and extend the lifespan of ship components.
Regulatory Compliance: Maintaining compliance with maritime standards through regular repairs avoids penalties and ensures the ship remains certified for operation.
Conclusion
Voyage repair is indispensable for maintaining the safety, efficiency, and reliability of maritime operations. By integrating advanced technologies and adhering to best practices, ship operators can ensure their vessels remain in optimal condition throughout their voyages. This proactive maintenance approach improves the lifespan and performance of ships. It also helps the sustainability and competitiveness of the maritime industry.

The Bremer Kogge, c. 1380
The wreck itself was found in the Weser in 1962 and was 23.23 metres long, 7.78 metres wide and 7.04 metres high including the aft quarter. In order to salvage it, it had to be completely dismantled, then reassembled with over 2000 individual parts and preserved.
For this purpose, the cog disappeared for another 19 years in a huge bathtub filled with 800,000 litres of polyethylene glycol. This is a soluble artificial wax that displaces the water from the wood over time and, at the end of the procedure, gives the fragile structure greater strength as it slowly dries out and Since 2001, the good ship has been on display at the German Maritime Museum in Bremerhaven.

mythopoesis a speculative ethnography of Bremen Exhibition opening 31.1.2020 - 19:00 hrs + Sphere's farewell PARTY Exhibition is open on Saturday 1th and Sunday 2nd January from 14:00 - 18:00 Exhibition description: From an imaginary future, we look into the past in an attempt to comprehend the present. Bremen is seen through the fascinated yet naive eyes of foreigners trying to make sense of complex idiosyncrasies through the superficial scrutiny of significant cultural artifacts. Utilizing the colonial tropes of discovery and exploration, the city at the Weser is the object of study of a team of four fictitious ethnographers, archeologists and anthropologists. The alternate time in which the exhibition takes place is articulated through various forms of fictioning present in the pieces exhibited, as well as in the museography and the accompanying support material. The exhibition will consist of a set of small artistic gestures like photofilms, interactive websites, video, audio and 3D scanned objects. These will explore themes such as maritime flag storytelling, the interesting self-referential qualities of artifacts like souvenirs, the recurrence of the number four in Bremen’s iconography and the usage of the stacking morphology as seen in the sculpture of the Bremer Stadtmusikanten. As well as displaying forms of fictioning already present such as how architectural renders of future spaces coexist with historical buildings in the urban landscape. As students coming from colonized territories in Latin America we are familiar to seeing past and present cultures reduced to artifacts and inductive descriptions in sterile museum spaces. By employing scientific reasoning and data collection, culture is quantified and human experiences are diagnosed and logged. With these actions we seek to reflect upon colonial practices, power relations and the tools used to understand and depict the ‘other’. Finally, through the use fictioning and playfulness we seek an alternative approach.

Bye Europe!
My last few days on this continent I joined up with a friend from Aus and her travel companions, at the tail end of their 'fairytales' tour in Germany. 23 - 27 August.
It was great to wind down with a few days staying in the one spot and doing day trips to surrounding towns.
I met up with them in Hanover and joined them exploring neighbouring towns like Bremen a city straddling the Weser river in North West Germany. It was known for its role in maritime trade and for the gorgeous Hanseatic buildings on the market square. We went in search of the statue of the town musicians of Bremen - a donkey, a dog, a cat and a rooster all standing on each other. Apparently if you touch the donkeys front legs you get your wishes granted, I shall let you know how that one turns out! The fairy tale is worth reading. The city was bustling with people the day we went. Could have been that it was Saturday or could have been because it's a cool place. The UNESCO listed old town area was beautiful with tiny little stone alleyways and a gorgeous lolly shop. The nearby Schnoor neighbourhood is the only preserved medieval part of the city and was great fun to wander its tiny streets and take in the fabulous architecture. A beer and a Bratwurst were a must have along the wonderful waterfront area, taking in some people watching and just enjoying a wonderful summer day.

Hamelin, another town along the Weser river, is best known for the tale of the pied piper. For more than 60 years the Hochzeitshaus-Terrase is the place to see the Pied piper tale live. We got there on the Sunday and just made the 12pm start... The show is in German, but if you know the story you can follow along well enough. Local amateur actors including children perform the story over about 30 mins to the joy of the large crowds that show up to see them. It was a really hot day, so I hope the poor rats survived in their costumes! Great fun, great day and a heap of fun walking around a very empty town most things are closed on a Sunday!)

Hanover is the capital of Lower Saxony area, with over 500000 residents and is a major crossing point of the railway lines and highways. Its a lovely city and while we were there we visited the heritage from the Kings of Hanover, Herrenhausen gardens , palace and museum. These are considered some of the most famous attractions in Hanover. The gardens were amazing, it was a very very hot day, and a walk through the sprinklers was well worth it! The museum within the palace held some amazing artefacts and was an intriguing way to spend a few hours walking around taking it all in. We then headed back to the city area to walk the ‘red thread’. The red thread is Hanovers clever way of assisting tourists with ‘do it yourself’ exploring of the city. It’s a red line painted on the pavement weaving its way through the inner city joining up 36 attractions, including the town hall, the modern art installation the nanas, the Aegidienkirche a bombed out church that has been retained in memory of war. The booklet that my friends got from the information centre, fills you in on the history of what you are looking at, giving you a fantastic trip around the city and its history. That day needless to say was over 22000 steps, so we deserved our beers with our fabulous traditional German meal at the oldest restaurant in Hanover that night!

That was it, all of a sudden I was about to leave Europe , and head to the USA. I’m excited, but it also feels somewhat sad that I wont be back here again any time soon. It may better when it comes to border crossings though as the last 3 I have had have involved me being held up and having a far more lengthy conversation about what I have been doing and usually having to show the staff member the location of the most recent stamp in the Schenghen country (because they couldn’t find it easily). Understandable really, because when i look at it , it seriously looks like a child has had at it with a stamp pad - there is no logical flow of the stamps, some are over each other and they are on random pages...
27th August - time to leave and head to my next adventures!

Uniper And Titan LNG To Cooperate Boosting LNG Wilhelmshaven Terminal Functionality
Uniper SE and the Dutch Titan LNG signed a Memorandum of Understanding to accelerate the growth of Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) as a fuel in the downstream markets for industry, road fuel and shipping fuel in Germany. The parties are planning to develop a user-friendly technical interface and commercial products for small-scale LNG players from the Wilhelmshaven Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) for LNG. The terminal in Wilhelmshaven will enable the loading of small LNG seagoing vessels and barges. In addition, several truck loading bays are planned to enable the onward transport of LNG by road.
The distribution of LNG by truck from Wilhelmshaven is seen as an important impulse for the establishment of LNG as truck fuel. Numerous LNG filling stations are currently under construction in Germany. Compared to diesel, LNG will significantly reduce CO2 emissions. In addition, no particles will be emitted and nitrogen and sulfur oxide emissions will be greatly reduced. The German Federal Government supports logistics companies with subsidies and the toll-free use of German roads for LNG-powered trucks.
With its proximity to the Jade Weser Port, Bremerhaven and the German Bight, Wilhelmshaven is a very suitable location to supply LNG for all downstream markets and in particular for marine fuels. The market for so-called small-scale LNG is gaining in importance due to its proven economic benefits. As a fuel, LNG already meets the more stringent environmental requirements for ocean shipping.
Keith Martin, Member of the Executive Board and Chief Commercial Officer of Uniper SE: “The agreement with an experienced and established market player in the small-scale LNG sector such as Titan LNG is another important step for the FSRU Wilhelmshaven project. Titan LNG has extensive know-how in the development of attractive products for customers in this segment. With Wilhelmshaven, we offer a first-class location for supplying the shipping and road fuel markets with LNG. With this cooperation, the FSRU Wilhelmshaven project can make an important contribution to reducing CO2 and pollutant emissions”.
Niels den Nijs, Chief Executive Officer of Titan LNG: “Titan LNG is pleased that we can contribute the know-how we have built up over the last six years to this project for the LNG downstream market. We believe that the short distances to the markets will help to boost LNG as a fuel. Our existing and future customers will benefit from the economic and environmental advantages of this fuel.”
Titan LNG and Uniper have been leading suppliers in the small-scale LNG market segment for years. Uniper is currently developing a Floating Storage and Regasification Terminal (FSRU) at its Wilhelmshaven site. The FSRU will have a natural gas send-out capacity of 10 billion cubic meters per year and an LNG storage capacity of more than 263,000 m³. The terminal is scheduled to go into operation in the second half of 2022. In Wilhelmshaven, Uniper can use existing infrastructure. It is the only German site with a deep-water port and can be reached without tidal constraints. In addition, Wilhelmshaven is ideally located with regard to the existing pipeline and gas storage infrastructure.
FSRU technology is often used in the LNG industry. Compared to an onshore facility, a FSRU can be built faster and more cost-effectively, reducing risks during the construction phase.
In December 2018, Uniper signed a memorandum of understanding with the Japanese shipping company Mitsui O.S.K. Line (MOL). MOL will own, finance and operate the FSRU. Uniper is currently coordinating the permits for the operation of the facility with the relevant authorities.
