Wish Granted 🌟👩🏾🎶 (Wish Reimagined)
Chapter 1: Once Upon A Time...
✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨
We open up our story with the Disney 100th anniversary logo:
youtube
Then it transitions to the Walt Disney Productions title with the overture from Snow White playing, followed by the casts of the story and the people who worked together to create it. The next shot brings us a message from Walt himself, leftover from his very first movie.
Tumblr media
(They had the AUDACITY to leave that out!? Shows how grateful they are...)
It fades to black and shows the camera panning over to a fancy 3D storybook with the title "Wish Granted" on the cover, and it slowly opens up, turning to the first couple of pages.
Tumblr media
The narration begins with a young woman's voice reading in a calm, yet cheerful voice.
Once upon a time, in a land…pretty far away, there was a kingdom off the coast of the Iberian Peninsula. A Kingdom full of magic, dreams and wonder, Rosas.
The book then turns a page to show two pictures, one portraying a man, a woman and a lynx. The other showing a large kingdom near the sea.
In this kingdom ruled by King Magnifico and Queen Amaya, Rosas is a safe place for people all over the world. No matter where a person is from, they will have a safe and happy life. However.....
The book flips to the next page, showing Magnifico taking a wish from a citizen. On the first page, the woman his happily giving it to him, but on the second, she looks incredibly sad, gently clutching her chest with sorrow.
When you arrive, you must give your greatest wish to the king in exchange to live there. The cost of it leaves with you with an empty feeling inside, never being able to fill the hole in your heart until the king grants it himself.
The book flips to another page showing a girl in purple, a yellow glowing person, their pet goat looking upwards and the shadowy figure of the royals holding the wishes in their hands.
This is a story about a girl, a star, a goat, a kingdom and a wish. This is a story about how anyone can make their wishes come true....
The camera then zooms in on the next page, transitions into 2D as it goes directly into the storybook.
Tumblr media
We see few boats crossing the sea, making their way towards Rosas. A little redheaded girl is taking a look at the approaching kingdom. "Look, mommy! Is that it? Is that our new home?" she asked enthusiastically, pointing ahead. Her mother joined her and nodded as a smile crept across her face. "Yes, dear. That's Rosas." she said with hope in her eyes as they approach the new land.
Speaking of the new land, one of the citizens is seen at the port. A teen boy with collar length blonde hair, was waiting to greet them. The biggest thing that stood out to him was the red tunic and yellow scarf around his neck. The boy was waving a flag with the symbol of Ross' embroided on it, signaling them to the port.
The teen took a deep breath and started pacing back and forth, talking to himself. "All right, Flazino. You can do this. You've done this dozens of times. Just pretend you're not sending them to their possible suffering....I've got a bad feeling about it."
Flazino heard the people approaching and quickly slapped on a smile. He spun around and greeted the newcomers with open arms.
"Haha! Hola, Shalom, Salam! Welcome to your new home! You're going to love it here, especially our magnificent rulers! Everyone ready?"
The travelers cheer in agreement and follow the boy through the gates of the kingdom.
🎵 Welcome to Rosas 🎵🌹
Flazino
Magnifico
Amaya
Group singing
Tumblr media
Oh, Welcome to Rosas, an amazing kingdom. Where the possibilities are more than you can fathom!
(Flazino signals for the crowd to follow him as they pass through the gates)
There's no other place just as full of surprise, Where your dreams and your reality can collide!
(He passes by a man who's juggling 10 balls at once, hinting that his wish was to be the best juggler in the kingdom)
The most magical place on Earth, where most wondrous ideas give birth! You want to make dreams your come true? Well, have I got good news for you!
(He gives a wink and other residents start appear around him for the chorus)
(The background characters- I mean the Rosas citizens who haven't had their life force drained yet start to dance)
'Cause here in the city of Rosas (Oh, ah-ah)
You can turn all your wanting to wishing No what-ifs, ands or buts Oh, here in the city of Rosas (Oh, ah-ah) It's unlikely that you’ll be unhappy No need to make a fuss
(Flazino lifts the little girl onto his shoulders as they continue) A home for me (Me) For you (You) And all of us (Us) Thе city of Rosas
(He leads the group over to a small theater showing little muppets of Magnifico and Amaya. The following moments and dancing scenes are also a reference to the "Topsy Turvy" song number from the Hunchback of Notre Dame. Love that movie)
So like, we have this king named Magnifico
(He points to muppet versions of the royals, with the Magnifico one holding his scepter high)
He built Rosas many years ago
(the background has a little cardboard replica of the kingdom rising behind it.)
With lightning for hands and eyes that can glow
(He raises his hands creepily and jokingly to the child, but she gasps in fear)
No, no, no, I'm just kidding! But he is powerful! They're just like us with a twist.
(He ruffles her hair playfully)
So much power, too much to list! (Oh, wow!) The magic exists, And there you have it, poof, there's your wish! Oh and, hey did I mention when you turn eighteen? You get to give your wish in a ceremony And he keeps them safe, every wish he acquires (Wish he acquires) And once a month he grants someone’s greatest desire (Greatest desire)
(The puppets show the King taking a tiny blue orb from a puppet citizen, then it dances around as if it just won a million dollars)
It could be you someday, or you, even you! Oh, I can't wait! (He points to three different people on each "you", with a couple them looking doubtful)
(A man asks) Does it hurt? (the girls asks) Do you cry?
(Before Flazino can reply, Magnifico just pops in in front of him, the boy giving a look that says "Where the he'll did you come from!?") Oh, no, and you won't even miss it when you say "goodbye"
(He holds the note on "bye" to show off his singing, while Flazino rolls his eyes in annoyance)
(Then Amaya jumps in to take over part of the final chorus) 'Cause here in the city of Rosas (Oh, ah-ah) You can turn all your wanting to wishing
No what-ifs ands or buts,
Oh, here in the city of Rosas (Oh, ah-ah) It's unlikely that you’ll be unhappy
No need to make a fuss
(The royals take this chours proudly singing, while Sabor stands with a sly smile as he basks in all the attention they're getting. Flazino is visually annoyed and rolls his eyes. He then tries to look for an opening so he can finish the song)
A home for me (Me)
For you (You)
And all of us (Us)
The city of Rosas
(Flazino quickly steps in front of the royals during "And all of us" to try and finish the song, then Magnifico steps in front of him and blocks him with his cape. During the final line, He then raises his hands to the sky and releases an explosion of fireworks and it decorates the area in magical sparkles)
Tumblr media
As sparkles and rose petals shower the audience, applause echoes throughout the stadium. The newcomers were chatting and cheering amongst each other. Flazino was used to this part, its practically pure dopamine when people first arrive and hear one man can grant people's desires. This whole song their idea in the first place, and he's performed it a hundred times. You'd think they at least let him sing the propaganda song!
"I can't wait to get my wish granted now!"
"There's so much I want to ask for!"
"They're such a beautiful couple!"
The little redhead girl from earlier was especially excited. "I'm gonna wish for something real big when I grow up! I want to bring everyone I can here so they can be happy like us!" She giggled and continued to clap her hands.
Flazino's smile faded hearing this. This kid was going to grow up and loose her happiness in the blink of an eye.
Magnifico could see the boy's expression change and cleared his throat. "Well now, I suppose that's enough excitement for you today. We've made good work making our new friends feel welcome." He said sternly.
The boy quickly changed his demeanor. "O-oh. T-thank you, your high-"
He was interrupted by the sudden appearance of a lynx inches away from his face. The feline had a rather angry look on his face. Though he's usually like that when he's has to deal with anyone but his beloved owner. He was being carried by his arms by the Queen.
"Now that all that noise is finished. "You can make yourself useful by giving Sabor here his breakfast." She demanded. "Poor dear must be starving. Aren't you?" she cooed.
Sabor purred....and licked his mouth as he looked Flazino as if he was the breakfast himself. That's definitely not a good sign.
"Uh....yeah, I'll get right on that." The boy responded as he gingerly picked up the lynx and did his best to carry him in his arms. He was only a couple years old, but he weighed as much as a full grown goat. That or the boy wasn't all that strong. "How much do you eat anyway?" Sabor grunted in offense.
"That's a good apprentice! Run along, now!" Magnifico slightly mocked the boy as he left. In a low voice he mumbled. "Peasant boy."
Flazino stopped walking for a moment and looked behind him. He saw the two royals eating up the praise and attention they were getting from the people. The newcomers were enamored with them while the longtime citizens gently clapped, but not nearly as enthusiastically. In fact, they seemed a little sleepy, some with half lidded eyelids.
The boy felt a sharp pain on his shoulder, which made him come back to his senses. Sabor had scratched his shoulder to remind him of his obviously more important meal. (Can you say "spoiled"?)
"Yeah, yeah, I get it. I'll get Dhalia to make your breakfast." He mumbled as he walked down from the stage and away from the crowd.
Tumblr media
We crossfade to outside of the Kingdom, as hours pass and day turns to night. Its been a long, stressful day for Flazino, especially when most of tasks were just basic chores, going on errands and maybe learn some magic from Magnifico, if he decided he was ready. Its all become the norm. But there was one thing he was able to do without the watchful eye of the king.
"About that time of month again?" asked a girl as she brought Flazino a horse. The sorcerers' apprentice gathered his bags for his trip and gave the girl a nod. "You got it, Bazeema. Those mushrooms take a whole month to grow, and you know much the king loves those." He gently patted the horse on the snout then proceed to mount it. He pulled up the hood over to seemingly cover his head from the chill air.
"Would you mind finding some herbs while you're there? Just a few things like parsley, rosemary and thyme." she asked softly.
"Sure thing." the boy said with a smile. He signed the horse to start walking towards the gate.
"Are you sure those bag aren't too heavy for you?" Bazeema asked, looking worried about the weight it could put both his back and the horse's.
Flazino waved a hand as he continued forward, not looking back. "No need to worry, I'm not helpless." he called to her, with a laugh.
He quietly passed through the gates. Looking in all directions to make sure no one else was nearby. Once the coast was clear. The boy said in a low voice, "I'm far from helpless." He tightened the reins and made the horse transition from a gallop to a run.
Tumblr media
The horse reacted and took off at a great speed. Flazino traveled further and further forward until Ross was no longer visible. He traveled for about an hour, passing a giant obnoxious sign of the smug king pointing to the kingdom with a sign that read: "To Rosas: Where all your wishes will come true".
The trees became a blur as he ran through the forest like a ghost. He finally reached the deepest part of the woods, were many branches of trees overlapped each other, as if blocking something from entering.
Flazino reached into one of his bags and pulled out a small green vial, that glowed brightly in his hands. He uncorked the vial and whispered to it in latin: "Ineo."
He threw the liquid at the branch's and waited. The branches started to shake, startling the horse. Flazino patted him on the head. "Easy, Achilles. Nothing to be scared off." ,he comforted the animal. Magnifico may not have taught him much magic like he wished for, but the boy watched and learned whenever the King performed his spells. It payed off rather well for him.
The branches slowly opened up, revealing an entrance to a hidden village within the forest itself.
Tumblr media
The trees closed off the entrance behind him as Flazino slowly entered the safe haven for those who fled from the Royal's tyranny. This was the Hamlet.

OH MY GOD, ITS FINALLY DONE! CHAPTER 1 IS HERE AND DONE! AAAAAAAAAAAA!!!
Would you believe that this took over a week to do this? This wasn't meant to be that long, but the way I write, everything plays out like a movie, so that's why its a bit longer. 😅 I also chose this way to start it because a majority of rewrites usually start with Asha in some way, so I wanted to do a bit of a twist and start it off through Flazino instead and then lead to Asha.
Another fun thing is that while I haven't read all the rewrites out there (I don't have all that time, unfortunately), but I rarely see Flazino used, if at all. So it was like I was given a clean slate to work with. Plus some people figured out he was helping the Hamlet in the deleted scenes and was the original Sorcerers' Apprentice, which gave me inspiration for this. He's like a double agent in this telling, and he'll be important to the story later on. The design I had in mind for him was a reference to Arthur from The Sword in the Stone, with a bit of Jim Lake from Troll hunters mixed in. Sooooo imagine he's voiced by Josh Keaton, he's a good VA for these types of roles (As you can tell, I may have gotten attached to this guy, lol 😅) So he'll be getting his own bio later on.
And how about those royals, huh? THEY ARE TOTAL GLORY HOGS! 😂 They're incredibly narcissistic in this version, but most people see it as charming and don't catch on. Plus I wanted them to have have the classic Disney broadway sequence during the song, cause I think the movie would've benefited from it. (Flazino is more like a jester to them than an apprentice, hence the Clopin reference.) They put on smiles, act nice and give you the Hollywood treatment, but its all just to get those wishes. There is no redeeming them here, they're villains. Straight up.
Also, BIG thank you to @signed-sapphire for helping me with rewriting the Rosas song too! They gave me a great guide to making new lyrics and it really worked out! And for everyone who took the time to read to this point! You earned a big hug! 😊
It'll be a while before chapter 2, cause I want to finish Kingdom of Wishes first,in case I get more ideas. But for now, feel free to ask any questions on my rewrite and leave as many comments as you want!
Thanks for reading!

"Welcome to Rosas" took inspo from the wrong opening songs
Tumblr media
"Wish" is an exhausting topic, but this is not the last time I'm gonna talk about it! I don't remember all the influences the song was said to take influence from, but "Welcome to Rosas" seemed to embody the more upbeat Disney openings, songs that embraced community and how the protagonist fit into it, such as...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
However, I think Disney should've went in a different direction, going for a worldbuilding song that was epic and mysterious, dramatic and foreboding, just as much haunting as it was enticing, such as...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Just now realizing we haven't gotten many epic opening songs for the musicals that fit the criteria lately.)
As an amateur songwriter, I know how hard it can be to write an opening song, but WTR just didn't work, neither in production, lyrics, or entertainment.

🌟 Out of all the characters in Disney’s “Wish”, Queen Amaya is among my favorites, next to Star. About two weeks ago, me and a friend of my mom’s saw the new Disney movie on an early Thursday afternoon. It was during a day-off from work. On social media, I saw many, many mixed to negative reactions about “Wish”, but thought that maybe I ought to see it in the theater or when it’s available for streaming on Disney+. I really enjoyed Queen Amaya’s dynamic with Asha, the lead character. As well as her verse in the song “Knowing What We Know Now”. Anyway, me and my mom’s friend saw the movie and liked it.
Thinking of it now, I give the movie 7 out of 10 stars. My main criticisms are how too quirky Asha is, though she does follow in the footsteps of quirky female characters like Rapunzel, Anna, Moana, and Mirabel. King Magnifico is another weak villain , motivated by greed. Yet, I really enjoyed the visual and verbal Easter eggs and anecdotes throughout the movie to commemorate Disney’s 100th anniversary. 👑

3. This Journey To The Past (From "Anastasia")

Welcome to Hamelin (Parody of "Welcome to Rosas" from "Wish") is about when in the film and social media art and literature platform’s opening number, Amelia (voiced by Ariana DeBose in her singing role) introduces us to the town of Hamelin where she lives from her new home, where everyone is content because they know the rat catcher and magical flutist Pied Piper (Emmanuel Pahud, the flutist when Pied Piper is unable or chooses not to speak) for their hearts desires and wishes for him to tell the story of him for the 5th anniversary of the story of The Pied Piper of Hamelin.
I Almost Remember (Once Upon A December) (From "Anastasia") is about when Amelia is reminiscing about her life as the princess of Hamelin. She distantly remembers of her childhood living within the palace, and she feels a strong sense of nostalgia as she wanders from room to room. Later on, she imagines the ballroom coming to life as dancers waltz across the floor. She sings of remembrance, memories, and a sense of forgetting something she once held near and dear to her heart.
This Journey To The Past (From "Anastasia") is about Amelia has just recently wandered the forest and is now making her way to the kingdom of Far, Far Away in an impulsive decision to find her old home. She sings about finding her path through life and making it to her way, where her old home must live and where her past must reside. In other words, she is on a “journey to the past”—the past that she had been her old home before. Pied Piper follows his lead to Amelia's path.
Life's Too Short (From "Frozen") is the hero and villain duet song is about Amelia trying to using Goldilocks to be her sister, and the two former sisters finally being friends now that Goldilocks' secret is revealed. Their opposite personalities keep them away from one another, though.
And This Is The Thanks I Get?! (From "Wish") is the villain song is about the citizens of Hamelin and the people of Far, Far Away are close to revolt as they press Goldilocks (voiced by Judy Kuhn in her singing role) for greater transparency regarding what she is doing with her entire life as she spies on Amelia falling in love with Pied Piper. Goldilocks goes back into the Far, Far Away palace and vents about the ingratitude of her subjects, amid much complimenting herself on her good looks.
I Make This Wish (From "Wish") is about Amelia (voiced by Ariana DeBose in her singing role) has found out that Pied Piper (voiced by Emmanuel Pahud, the flutist when Pied Piper is unable or chooses not to speak) has no intention of not paying the piper that the citizens of Hamelin have fooled to him. Outraged, she finds a high spot outside the castle and sings this song about wishing she had the power to help not only Pied Piper or Goldilocks, but everyone in the town of Hamelin and even the kingdom of Far, Far Away. And she looks up the stars and makes her wish.
Let It Go (From "Frozen") is about Amelia with her struggles to find her place in a world that knows her and a life she’s knew that she too many bad things of.
Let It Go (Reprise) (A Fanmade song from "Frozen") is about when Amelia (Ariana DeBose in her singing role) pleads to the people of Far, Far Away and the citizens of Hamelin to change its future and stop Goldilocks (Florence Pugh in her speaking role).
And the final song is I Make This Wish (Reprise) (From "Wish") is about an aftermath of Goldilocks' defeat, Amelia saw Pied Piper statues him to death, she wishes for him to come back alive, promises him to see her as the magic of an act of true love. Amelia hugs Pied Piper and cries. The people of Far, Far Away and the citizens of Hamelin watches in shocked despair and in somber silence. But all of the sudden, Amelia's wish was granted and it came true, Pied Piper begins to thaw, the statues breaks and cracks, he came back alive! And Pied Piper embraces Amelia as the magic of an act of true love.

Note
what do you think of the song welcome to rosas from disney's wish?
I thought it was pretty as well as did a pretty good job of basically telling that King Magnifico holds everyone's wishes hostage with little hope of it actually happening. :/

Welcome to Rosas! (my ver.) 🌟
Okay, I’m not as talented at songwriting as others so bare with me.
______________________________________________
Asha: Okay, okay. Deep breaths (breathes), bright smile, motivation from the kid…
Valentino: Maaaa!
Asha: *giggles* Well… here I go.
*Asha opens the big gates*
Asha: Hello everyone! Welcome one and all! I’m Princess Asha and I’m here to show you this beautiful kingdom of wishes! I hope you love my home just as much as I do.
Welcome to Rosas, come on, right this way. All the greatest creations are here on display. There’s no other kingdom as full of surprise. Where your dreams and your reality can collide. You wanna dance? Or sing? Take to the skies like birds in the spring? Go to outer space? Well hey, you’ve come to the perfect place.
‘Cause here, in the kingdom of Rosas! You can turn all your wanting to wishing, no what-ifs and no wonders. It’s clear, in the kingdom of Rosas! It’s unlikely that you’ll be unhappy with so much to discover. A home for me, for you, and all of us. The kingdom of *clap* *clap* Rosas!
My father, the king, is Magnifico. He helped build this kingdom so many years ago. With lightning bolt hands and eyes that can glow. No, no, I’m kidding. But there’s more you should know. He protects us with his life…
Male villager: He even has a magnificent wife.
Just one magic swish… and poof! There it is, it’s your wish.
Oh!
When you’re eighteen, the king, smart and wise. Will let you give him your wish, any shape, any size. And he’ll keep it safe, any wish he’ll acquire. And every month he’ll grant somebody’s greatest desire. It could be you, just wait. Even mine… if it’s never too late.
Male tourist: Does it hurt?
Child tourist: Do you cry?
You won’t even feel a bit of regret if you keep your dreams alive.

Say what you want about Disney’s upcoming movie Wish, I’m still mad that 6 months ago, Good Morning America invited a fan who was promised her that she was going to walk the red carpet w/Ariana DeBose her to the movie’s premiere, only for that promise to be broken because SAG-AFTRA won’t accept a half-baked offer from the AMPTP.
My wish? JUSTICE FOR JAZZ SMITH!!!
Stay strong, SAG-AFTRA!
youtube
And yes, I know that Ariana DeBose was part of that talk w/Fran Drescher that George Clooney organized, but STILL, JUSTICE FOR JAZZ SMITH!!!

Pop songs I wish "Wish" had taken inspiration from for their soundtrack
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For context:
"Bigger" for "Welcome to Rosas." Kind of a cheat since "Bigger" is from a soundtrack (one affiliated with Disney, too), but it's an impactful opening track written and performed by a pop icon. The message of being part of something amazing and bigger than yourself is a wonderful message that WTR could've done well with, rather than a simple welcome song. Plus it could also show the desperation to have your wish granted, a selfishness beneath the surface, Disney-level altruism.
"Someone You Loved" for "At All Costs." Granted, AAC is the strongest song from the soundtrack. However, it was a missed opportunity to dive into Magnifco and Asha's pasts and motivations more. A bittersweet song like SYL (which was about losing someone close to you) would've been good inspiration to make this song just as wistful as it was beautiful.
"Sine From Above" for "This Wish." TW is...it's just so basic. If the rumors about Julia Michaels having three weeks to make the soundtrack and no changes is true, then I can't blame her. But the song is still terrible and lacks the awe and majesty that the marketing song should have. SFA is the better version of this song, basically.
"Just Like Magic" for "I'm a Star." Hot take: I wanted IAS to be a powerful ballad rather than a flat, cute-sy song, which may not be a popular idea since it'd come right after a powerful ballad. But anything was better than the educational tv-vibes it gave off. JLM is about the Laws of Attraction, about putting out good energy into the world and getting it back into yourself. Asha would need something like that after the "devastating" realization she discovered about her kingdom.
"This is Why We Can't Have Nice Things" for "This is the Thanks I Get?!" Honestly, this is self-explanatory when you listen to both songs. It's like Taylor wrote a Magnifico song herself. And it's not even about being a villain! It's about being taken advantage of and dealing with ungrateful people. And on a darker note: Magnifico could be losing his sanity and hallucinating himself back in his village and saying how they wouldn't be ungrateful--or having to remind himself that he has to deal with ungrateful people, as that's the price for keeping their lives safe.
"Wide Awake" for "Knowing What I Know Now." Seeing how WA is about having a crushing realization hit you and feeling the freedom to move on from it is a powerful feeling, something that would've been better than KWIKN--though I do blame part of the song's failure on the fact that Asha's friends aren't fleshed out enough for the song not to be sung by random people.

Welcome to Rosas
I just had the horrifying realization of how long the comic of the song will take and I need to map out what will happen for each lyric.
I'm going to write out my version of the song before I complete my comic. Sung by Dahlia, Bazeema, and Hal
Lyrics are color coded as to the characters listed
Black - Everyone
Blue - Newcomers
Welcome to Rosas, come in and this way
We hope you love it and choose to stay
There's no other so full of surprise
Where all of your dreams and realty can collide
The most magical place on Earth
Full of riches, joy, mirth
Want great strength or build a vase
Well, hey, you've come the right place
Cause here, in the Kingdom of Rosas
We'll turn your wanting to wishing, no what-ifs and no wonders
Oh here, in the Kingdom of Rosas
It's unlikely to be unhappy
With so much to discover
A home for me, for you
For all of us
The Kingdom of Rosas
So we have a king named Magnifico
And he built Rosas many years ago
With might beyond man
He grew Rosas from sand
And made us the envy of all the sea and land
The Queen will ease any fret
And the King will fight off any threat
With no sort of catch? This is too good to be true
Okay, let me mention the only thing that's due
Should you at least be eighteen and decide to stay here
You must give a wish to the King once a year
You may go about and take your fill
And soon the King shall grant your greatest will
Though, you will forget what it used to be
But the ignorance will undo your prospects and set you free
Here, in the Kingdom of Rosas
We'll turn your wanting to wishing, not what ifs and no wonders
Oh here, in the Kingdom of Rosas
You can always be happy with so much to uncover
A home for me
For you
For all of us
The Kingdom of Rosas
*song writing is hard but tell me what you think

MartianBugsBunny Reviews: The Music of Wish
I'v been working on this for the past week or so and I have now seen the movie...eight times I think? Four on one Sunday and four on the next lmao
Let’s get the basics out of the way first! Overall, a lot of these songs were mediocre but probably would’ve been things I’d sing in the shower ad nauseam if it weren’t for one or two really horrible lines. That’s kind of the overall theme of the music from Wish, to be honest. I liked the music/tunes of most of these, though. I also noticed that the lyrics have this weird dichotomy of “let’s rhyme these things even if it doesn’t make sense” and “let’s just not care about the rhymes,” both of which were kind of off-putting to me.
I think the voices they got to sing this stuff were MEGA wasted. Ariana DeBose has the most heavenly voice; her higher register has a gorgeous sound. Chris Pine is better at singing than I would've expected. Both of them are good at those subtle shifts in pitch (I think it's called melisma? but don't quote me on that) that I can and will go nuts over. They deserved better material to work with. Now onto the specifics! I’m gonna rank each song out of ten (totally arbitrary lol) and ramble about why for a while. It's not too long, so if you have a little time on yours hands, read on and enjoy!
Welcome To Rosas 5/10 Not bad. It terms of tune, it has some decent flavor, but the lyrics are pretty forgettable. I think using a song to set up the concepts that they did was a good idea, like the first song in Encanto, but I just don't like it much. I think part of that is the informal tone??? like when Asha says "so like, we have this king" or "I'm totally kidding" or "oh hey, did I mention," that kinda gets on my nerves. and yes, I'm well aware that's a little hypocritical bc The Family Madrigal did some of the same things, but WTR isn't super strong to begin with so I instantly become more annoyed at the little details. Also, Asha's literally being a tour guide for the kingdom and that's not professional imo.
At All Costs …… I’m not scoring this one. I don’t know how to. I’m addicted to the chorus, that’s the first thing I’ll say; I watched Wish four times on the first day I watched it, and that was the first part I started singing along with. The harmonies get into my gut. But honestly, in terms of context, it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. The lyrics sound like they should be directed at a person, not inanimate objects, which takes me out of the moment when I’m watching the movie. Some parts are a little clumsy, but if I’m viewing it as a love song it’s stunning, and DeBose and Pine's voices are heavenly together. I will say that subjectively, it's my favorite song in the soundtrack, I fell for it so hard and fast. <3
This Wish 7/10 In terms of Disney “I Want” songs this is at the bottom of the rankings, let’s be real. I like the sound of it, especially the non-syllabic vocalizations at the end of the chorus, but a lot of the lyrics just do not hit. Now, I will say that I saw a lot of people ragging on “to have something more for us than this,” and that’s actually one of my favorite parts of the song. It captures that feeling of longing for more without knowing exactly what that means or how to phrase it out loud so neatly. On the other hand, I definitely agree with the critiques of “throwing caution to every warning sign,” that’s one of my least favorite lyrics in the whole movie.
You’re A Star 6/10 Oddly, this one was less horrible than I expected. It delivered absolutely nothing, don’t get me wrong. It tried to tackle the idea of people and stars being made out of the same stuff and basically living as different notes in the same symphony and failed spectacularly. The big question “have you ever wondered why you look up at the sky for answers?” was one of my favorite lyrics in the entire soundtrack and there was NO payoff. (Plus, if I mixed up “elegant” and “eloquent” in a multi-million dollar movie I would never be able to look myself in the face again.) The entire second half of the song was pure lyrical garbage. But I like the tune and the animals are pretty cute, and despite being relatively hollow I found myself enjoying this one.
This Is The Thanks I Get 7/10 I’ve already said this but I’m gonna repeat myself: tonally this song was all wrong. 0/10 for that if I’m being perfectly honest. Something more along the lines of Hellfire or Be Prepared would’ve hit a lot harder—more sinister, more in line with the descent-into-madness thing that was occurring in the plot, would’ve improved this section of the soundtrack SO MUCH. With that complaint out of the way, the song we got was fine. Some of the lines were either poorly-written or repetitive, but as a whole I kind of enjoy it and would definitely dance around amateurishly in my room to it. It’s just too silly.
Knowing What We Know Now 1/10 This was my least favorite song in the entire movie. I just hate it. The lyrics are so sloppy.
This Wish (Reprise) 7/10 Honestly I think I liked this part better than the original song. Asha starting by herself and gradually being joined by her friends and the entire city was incredibly moving, and I might go so far as to say that this was the most powerful moment of the movie. I also enjoyed the twists on the original lyrics, particularly “we’re past dipping our toes in, we know it’s do or die, it’s sink or swim.” That part just felt really well done.
