Just saw a sneak preview screening of Wish and it was fun. “Knowing What I Know Now” and “This Wish (Reprise)” are bangers that are going to be stuck in my head for awhile.

MartianBugsBunny Reviews: The Music of Wish
I'v been working on this for the past week or so and I have now seen the movie...eight times I think? Four on one Sunday and four on the next lmao
Let’s get the basics out of the way first! Overall, a lot of these songs were mediocre but probably would’ve been things I’d sing in the shower ad nauseam if it weren’t for one or two really horrible lines. That’s kind of the overall theme of the music from Wish, to be honest. I liked the music/tunes of most of these, though. I also noticed that the lyrics have this weird dichotomy of “let’s rhyme these things even if it doesn’t make sense” and “let’s just not care about the rhymes,” both of which were kind of off-putting to me.
I think the voices they got to sing this stuff were MEGA wasted. Ariana DeBose has the most heavenly voice; her higher register has a gorgeous sound. Chris Pine is better at singing than I would've expected. Both of them are good at those subtle shifts in pitch (I think it's called melisma? but don't quote me on that) that I can and will go nuts over. They deserved better material to work with. Now onto the specifics! I’m gonna rank each song out of ten (totally arbitrary lol) and ramble about why for a while. It's not too long, so if you have a little time on yours hands, read on and enjoy!
Welcome To Rosas 5/10 Not bad. It terms of tune, it has some decent flavor, but the lyrics are pretty forgettable. I think using a song to set up the concepts that they did was a good idea, like the first song in Encanto, but I just don't like it much. I think part of that is the informal tone??? like when Asha says "so like, we have this king" or "I'm totally kidding" or "oh hey, did I mention," that kinda gets on my nerves. and yes, I'm well aware that's a little hypocritical bc The Family Madrigal did some of the same things, but WTR isn't super strong to begin with so I instantly become more annoyed at the little details. Also, Asha's literally being a tour guide for the kingdom and that's not professional imo.
At All Costs …… I’m not scoring this one. I don’t know how to. I’m addicted to the chorus, that’s the first thing I’ll say; I watched Wish four times on the first day I watched it, and that was the first part I started singing along with. The harmonies get into my gut. But honestly, in terms of context, it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. The lyrics sound like they should be directed at a person, not inanimate objects, which takes me out of the moment when I’m watching the movie. Some parts are a little clumsy, but if I’m viewing it as a love song it’s stunning, and DeBose and Pine's voices are heavenly together. I will say that subjectively, it's my favorite song in the soundtrack, I fell for it so hard and fast. <3
This Wish 7/10 In terms of Disney “I Want” songs this is at the bottom of the rankings, let’s be real. I like the sound of it, especially the non-syllabic vocalizations at the end of the chorus, but a lot of the lyrics just do not hit. Now, I will say that I saw a lot of people ragging on “to have something more for us than this,” and that’s actually one of my favorite parts of the song. It captures that feeling of longing for more without knowing exactly what that means or how to phrase it out loud so neatly. On the other hand, I definitely agree with the critiques of “throwing caution to every warning sign,” that’s one of my least favorite lyrics in the whole movie.
You’re A Star 6/10 Oddly, this one was less horrible than I expected. It delivered absolutely nothing, don’t get me wrong. It tried to tackle the idea of people and stars being made out of the same stuff and basically living as different notes in the same symphony and failed spectacularly. The big question “have you ever wondered why you look up at the sky for answers?” was one of my favorite lyrics in the entire soundtrack and there was NO payoff. (Plus, if I mixed up “elegant” and “eloquent” in a multi-million dollar movie I would never be able to look myself in the face again.) The entire second half of the song was pure lyrical garbage. But I like the tune and the animals are pretty cute, and despite being relatively hollow I found myself enjoying this one.
This Is The Thanks I Get 7/10 I’ve already said this but I’m gonna repeat myself: tonally this song was all wrong. 0/10 for that if I’m being perfectly honest. Something more along the lines of Hellfire or Be Prepared would’ve hit a lot harder—more sinister, more in line with the descent-into-madness thing that was occurring in the plot, would’ve improved this section of the soundtrack SO MUCH. With that complaint out of the way, the song we got was fine. Some of the lines were either poorly-written or repetitive, but as a whole I kind of enjoy it and would definitely dance around amateurishly in my room to it. It’s just too silly.
Knowing What We Know Now 1/10 This was my least favorite song in the entire movie. I just hate it. The lyrics are so sloppy.
This Wish (Reprise) 7/10 Honestly I think I liked this part better than the original song. Asha starting by herself and gradually being joined by her friends and the entire city was incredibly moving, and I might go so far as to say that this was the most powerful moment of the movie. I also enjoyed the twists on the original lyrics, particularly “we’re past dipping our toes in, we know it’s do or die, it’s sink or swim.” That part just felt really well done.

never not thinking about “I really hope you get it and you don’t live to regret it” because it is so tragic. Glinda did get what she chose and she regretted it deeply. Elphaba never got anything out of the path she chose but she still chose it again because her morals were more important to her, so she couldn’t regret it. That moment puts them on paths that are destined to never converge and they try so hard to bring themselves back to each other but they can’t do it for longer than the few minutes For Good takes. They say “I hope you’re happy in the end” and to everyone’s surprise Elphaba is and Glinda is not. But they never get what they really want which is to be together again.

oki but like merging "Cool As I Think I Am" and "If I Loved You" in the reprise is like fucking genius tbh like I am genuinely impressed by how both of the arcs explored in both songs were summed up neatly in the reprise in a sense that Pete finds his solid sense of identity and a big reason for that is Steph loving him despite not readily admitting it LIKE "If I really really did love you, you'd have to say-" "I know." ESPECIALLY WITH THE MAIN MESSAGE OF "IF I LOVED YOU" BEING THAT OF THE TWO DENYING THEIR FEELINGS FOR ONE ANOTHER BECAUSE THEY'D MAKE IT SUPER DAMN CLEAR TO THE OTHER IF THEY DID HAVE THEM SO WITH PETE SAYING THAT HE KNOWS AND WITH HIM LETTING STEPH KNOW HE DOES LOVE HER BACK BY BEING WILLING TO TAKE THE BULLET FOR HER LIKE FJSJDJAFJSJD

glinda doesn't have an "i want" song in the musical and it's something that doesn't devastate me to think about. not at all.

I'm sure it has been said a million times already (it's a sad tale, but we post it anyways) but heartbroken the new live London recording of Hadestown cuts so much, especially from act two.

never realized that Chant II is the soundtrack version meanwhile Chant (reprise) is the production version? i could be wrong with my wording, but i didn’t even realize we hadn’t heard Persephone’s “When i was a young girl…” line.
i think that’s a shame because that whole moment adds so much to the woman’s side of both these relationships, now it seems like the parallels stop at Orpheus and Hades but don’t continue with Eurydice and Persephone. it would’ve added that perfect cherry on top to the whole story tbh plus it gives persephone a perspective/backstory (which we technically do not have that information now if you’ve only seen the production, think of deleted scenes versus official movie, it’s not technically known info if it’s from an outside source that ISNT the final cut :/)

i've seen a lot of people say that 'the summoning' is the most unnerving song in npmd, and for good reason; it is immensely well-executed and excellently communicates how terrifying the lords in black can be. however, i don't see many people talking about 'cool as i think i am (reprise)' in this respect. yes, it's primarily meant to be tragic and pull on your heartstrings, because it makes you believe that pete is going to die and steph, his lover, will be the culprit. but honestly, the first time i listened to it, it was genuinely unsettling because of the contrast between the lyrics and its perceived purpose. at this point in the show, we've heard the song before and we know that it precedes tragedy. however, in this context, when pete and steph are finally revealing their feelings for one another, this song is when we as the audience are given the "confession of love" moment. thus, it is framed as a love song (however tragic). but the lyrics are literally pete trying to convince steph to kill him. it was very disconcerting, at least personally on the first watch.

ohoho i found new stuff
this time it’s the playbill for the 1963 She Loves Me tryouts!! (parts of it at least)
There is a plethora of information in here, but the soundtrack is especially interesting
Tumblr media
many of the songs present in the composer’s demo were still in the show at this point, but there are a few oddballs.
major changes (all comparisons are with the original 1963 broadway production and the 1963 demo recordings)
firstly, because ‘vanilla ice cream’ was not yet part of the show (at this point having its place taken by ‘the gift of magic’), the song reprised at the end of the show was instead ‘no more candy’. in the final version of the reprise, Georg recites Amalia’s letter from ‘ice cream’, revealing to her that he is Dear Friend. I wonder how this would have played out with ‘no more candy’ as the song being reprised?
there is also ‘seasonal pleasures’ which is present where ‘letters’ would eventually be. this song is not present in the demos, but i assume would probably have served the same purpose as ‘letters’, showing the passage of time and setting up Georg and Amalia’s upcoming date. there always seems to be another version of ‘letters’! (this brings the total to four!)
minor changes
the second reprise of ‘good morning, good day’ seems to have been cut by this point, but not the first one. huh.
‘days gone by’ comes before ‘sounds while selling’ for some reason.
‘will he like me?’ is directly after ‘i don’t know his name’, instead of after ‘goodbye georg’.
and i think that’s everything!

11. Least favorite character?
15. Have you learned any Mac Hacks?
16. What’s your favorite cold open?
Least favorite character?
When I remember that he exists it's Russ. Bad guys insist on calling Mac "Angus." He just seemed kind of skeevy and slippery to me, and I kept expecting the story to reveal he had sinister or at least extremely selfish plans and was using Mac and the Phoenix for his own nefarious purposes.
Otherwise, it's James. Bad guys insist on calling Mac "Angus." But James serves my purposes and makes Jack's character even more compelling. I wouldn't trust the show to handle it well, but I think he offers a lot for the fanfic authors to use and explore
Have you learned any Mac Hacks?
I haven't finished writing it yet but years ago I found this article about this group of doctors who were on a hiking/climbing trip and intubated and bagged an injured hiker with a water bladder until a rescue team could get to them.
Last winter, I was able to test the "use your car's floor mats for traction if you get stuck in snow or ice." And in theory I know how to get out of quicksand. I've written very few Mac Hacks.
What’s your favorite cold open?
I love the conversation and belt grab of 1x02, and Riley imitating Jack so Mac can think of 2x21 but I think my favorite has to be 1x12. We've got the vocal styling of Jack Dalton. Drugged Jack unable to hold back how he really feels. Jack thinking for a minute that Mac was shot and is dying on the other side of the door. And a great big hug
