Build Up Ep 1, Part 2

Hello! When we left off in my Build Up Recap adventure, we had just finished the first part of episode 1. In this post, we'll get through more of episode 1, and we'll learn why this man is making this face!

Let's do it!

A reminder on the color coding: blue is soul, orange is allround, green is unique, and purple is power.

We just saw Seongjeong the leaping lizard do his amazing intro.

Then of course it’s time for everyone to talk about who looks like who, as seems to happen at the beginning of every variety show like this, and as usual I don’t see most of them.

They say that Choi Suhwan looks like Onestar, and for this one, I guess maybe. (You may remember Onestar from his time as a vocal trainer on various Produce seasons.)

No one talks about how Hyukjin looks like Lee Yedam from Boys Planet/Onepact. (Or is it just me?)

Everyone says that Bitsaeon from M.O.N.T. looks exactly like Code Kunst. He doesn’t really, except that both of them have ears that stick out. Everyone seems to be talking about that, so he introduces himself as someone who wants to be as famous as Code Kunst. 

Just then (at least in the edit), V36 starts to play -- it’s Rose Blossom by H1-Key, as performed by Bitsaeon. (I’d have to assume that the song played first, then he introduced himself by name afterward…?) 

Seunghun from CIX starts dancing along as his new friend Hwanhee tries to place the song.

Everyone seems to like the performance, including me! He sounds great, and Sunghun from CIX interviews that their voices would harmonize well. Jay says, “aju nice!” when it’s done -- I wonder if he recognized it as Bitseon, since they probably know each other.  

Bitseon gets 21 votes, and says he’ll prove himself to those who didn’t pick him. 

Seongjeong the leaping musical actor says to his neighbor Joohee that there are a lot of idols here. That leads into a montage of performances from idol singers, all of whom are wondering, will anyone like my voice? (At least, the caption says they are.)

Donghun interviews that he’s here as a main vocal, and he’s expecting to see many other main vocalists. 

Every time I see Donghun in this episode, between his loosened tie and ill-fitting blazer and tired demeanor, all I can see is a beat cop in a police procedural who's ready to interrogate a subject.

Is it just me?

So, in honor of that, I'm going to call him "Detective Donghun" to remember him. As with all my nicknames, they're done to help us remember who is who and they're laced with love.

Kim Seoyhung says that he can’t sing stylish trendy songs, like the way idols sing. Yoon Inhwan interviews that all the idols sound the same, which is I think is unfair. Hwanhee, in particular, doesn’t sound like the others at all. Inhwan is mostly worried that their voices wouldn’t mix well, and I could say something like “I wonder if anyone’s voice would mix with yours, after you drank that gallon of milk before you sang?” But that would be mean. I try not to be mean, you guys. 

All the idol main vocalists get relatively low scores.

Hwanhee gets 14, Seokhwa gets 15, Donghun gets 18, and Geonu gets 11. I wonder if Hwanhee’s low vote tally is as much to do with his sort of sharp vocal color? I love the way it comes through in Up10tion songs but I could imagine people worrying about his harmonizing. Or maybe they didn’t think he showed enough in his teaser, since he sang a pop song and had backup vocals. 

Meanwhile, Seunghun from CIX is super nervous. 

It seems like he and Hwanhee have struck up a bit of a friendship. Hwanhee asks him if he often gets nervous, and Seunghun is like, I really, really do. Even at the pre-tape meeting, he was shaking. Hwanhee is like, there’s nothing to be nervous about -- you already recorded your teaser, so you can relax, right? (“Plus, we don’t have to dance!” -- Hwanhee, probably) But Seunghun is just a bag of anxiety wearing a brown jacket. 

When the voice says V1 will play, he reacts so strongly that it must be obvious that he is V1. As I said in my intro posts, I don’t think he was super successful in this performance, so I can understand why he’d be nervous. Like, you know you screwed up, and now everyone else is going to know, too. Aww, poor guy. When the song finishes playing, everyone applauds, but few had voted for him -- only 7. At the reveal of this low number, a bunch of the guys cover their mouth in shock.

Park Jeup, he of the powerful pussy bow, said he didn’t understand the low result -- in his opinion, this is a voice that would match with anyone’s. But Hong Seongjun from BDC, he of the white jacket with the mandarin collar, said it was “lacking.” Jay interviews that he didn’t vote for it or even really listen because it was in the ballad style, which wouldn’t match with his style.

Seunghun says, “I haven’t shown 20% of my voice. I will be the vocalist that could match anyone’s voice.” Everyone applauds. Fighting! Taehwan from Vanner says to Bitseon, “It’s a voice that could match with anything,” and Bitseon agrees. That’s sweet. 

Kindly hyung Hwanhee reaches out to touch Seunghun’s shoulder. “Do you feel better now that it’s over?” Seunghun says, “I feel better, but it’s a bummer.” He says he knew that the competition would be tough, but he’s still ashamed of the result. I think he might be fighting back tears. Oh no! Poor guy. I think we’ve all been there -- it’s too late to fix it so you just have to ride it out.

After that, we jump straight to V07.

If you’re just reading the recaps and didn’t necessarily listen to all the teasers, be sure to check this one out. Just try to picture someone who’d be singing it. 

The guys all react the moment it begins to play. 

Inhwan likes it. I think. I guess? Not sure. 

Seunghun likes it. I think. I guess? Not sure. 

Ma Jaekyung (former Romeo) says, “oh, what a nice voice.” Bitsaeon (M.O.N.T.) says, “Wow, this is truly unique.” The vote tally immediately begins to climb. Basically, everyone loves it, even Dahee. Kim Seongjeong, our leaping lizard, says that this person has a monster talent.  Jay says, “He was the one I wanted to work with the most out of all 40 people.” Sunyoul from Up10tion is like, just tell us who it is already!! 

Park Jeup (former IMFACT), with his puissant pussy bow, leans over the red-suited Hyukjin (100%/Fave1) to point out Neon, wearing green. They think it’s him singing. 

Side note: Google translate swears up and down that Park Jeup’s name is “Taxidermy”. Taxidermy is apparently 박제술, andJeup’s name is  박제업. So the first two syllables are the same. That’s unfortunate! 

So, who could it be? Who could be the owner of this interesting voice that won 27 votes, taking over first place…? They expected someone with that voice to be kind of old, but it’s youthful, soft-voiced (when speaking) Kang Hayoon.

He introduces himself with an anacrotic poem with the syllables of his name. “I’ll appeal strongly/ dear god, for me to debut/ please allow me.” Everyone says, “cyooo!” 

Up next is V33, sung by Neon (the one wearing green). It’s Rush Hour. Did he get permission from Jay to sing this? And did he get permission to do what he does next, which is get out of his chair and say things like “make some fucking noise!” making it really clear that he’s the one singing...? It seems at least against the spirit of the rules, if not actually against the letter, but no one is stopping him, so he’s just going to do that.  

A bunch of them get up to dance, including Woong and Sunyoul, both of whom seem ready to have fun here. I enjoy a joiner. 

Choi Haram, in his houndstooth gray and white blazer thing, interviews, “I’m a big introvert, He looked so cool. I was jealous.” I’ll call him introverted Haram. 

Neon introduces himself as an R&B/Soul singer-songwriter. He says he ran around to give them all energy. The running around thing was maybe a mistake, because a few of them say, “oh no, I was too busy dancing to vote!” He only gets 13 votes.  Donghun from ACE would have voted for him, and I think Seokhwa would have too. Neon interviews, “Considering those who forgot to vote out of surprise, I guess I did ok.” 

We find out that Woong from AB6IX has forgotten to vote more than once -- including during Pixar character Jo Hwanji’s audition with Swing My Baby. We see a bit of Woong’s pre-show taping interview, where he is wearing a denim jacket on top of another denim jacket on top of a hoodie. Do they not heat these studios at all or what?

He says, “It’s really hard to be the son of MNET. Right now, I’m the son of Rhymer from Brand New Music.” (AB6IX is under Brand New Music, and Rhymer is the founder.)  “But I’m open to anything. I love you, boss MNET!” 

So, how did Woong do with his singing? Let’s find out! 

He’s V11. The on screen caption says “Unique and captivating voice,” and as you know if you read my episode 0 guides, I like his singing, though I’m not quite sure how trained he is. It just sounds good. Bitsaeon points out that V11 (Woong) does well with the rhythm, and that’s true, he definitely does. As Woong dances along to his own singing, everyone is voting for him. Lee Gwangseok says, “That was outstanding.” And getting a bit of Woong’s personality along with the voice definitely makes the performance… well… sing.

Even though everyone seemed to enjoy the performance, Woong only gets 14 votes, but he stays cheerful. Woong says, “the result is different form the response. I’m still happy with the result. I’ll seize my chance and become the son of MNET. Fighting!”

Fighting! Also here is a picture of Inseok from KNK for my readers who love him. Also, why does Yeo One clap that way? That’s a weird way to clap. LTR: Yeo One, Inseok, and Ma Jaekyoung from Romeo.

Most of the guys laugh and clap for Woong’s enthusiasm, but Hong Seungjun is a bit more serious. 

His group, BDC, was also from Brand New Music, but basically disbanded in August of 2023. BDC even went on Peak Time to try to stir up some interest first, but the group was eliminated in the first round. Basically, Seungjun has had a tough road and it makes sense that he might be a little, I don’t know... maybe "bitter" is too harsh a word, but I think you know what I mean. Like, he’s been through it. And it must be extra galling that AB6IX is doing comparatively well, being from the same agency and all that. 

Seungjun voiceovers, “I thought it was odd. They’re still performing and doing pretty well. I’m wondering, what are they doing here? Especially Yeo One-sunbaenim from Pentagon.”

As if in response, Yeo One interviews, “I’ve been in this filed for a long time. I got 10 seconds, max 20 seconds in each song. I always had the third to sing for 10 years that can never be quenched. I’m here because I want to sing. I’m here to sing. I want people to watch me singing. That’s all I want.”

Then V40 plays -- it’s Yeo One. People seem to be enjoying it, and the vote tally creeps up. They like his expressiveness, which I can understand. Bitsaeon from MONT says, “I want to listen to that before I go to bed.” Personally, I put on a Jenny Nicholson video. Is that weird? Probably. Anyway, Yeo One gets 22 votes, which is pretty good. “I’m happy that people listened to me singing,” he interviews. Ok, Yeo One, we get it, sweetie. 

Little Kang Hayoon is still in first place, and Seunghun from CIX is in last. Dahee asks Hayoon if he thinks he’ll stay in first place, and Hayoon is like, “Didn’t even cross my mind.” 

But now it’s time for… V19. Will Hayoon be deposed? A rough, sweet, textured voice fills the studio. Everyone interviews things like “How can anyone even sing that well?” “It was such a deep voice. I was so surprised by it.” The vote tally is over the top -- it’s 32, leaving Hayoon in the dust. “It kind of poked my heart,” Hayoon says, of falling to second place. And whose voice is it? It’s Lee Gwangseok, the guy in the leather jacket. 

It seems unfair to everyone that such a tall, good looking guy (his normal job is to be a model!) with no training at all can just sing like that.Well, that’s how it be, sometimes, I guess! Sunyoul from Up10tion interviews, “The world is messed up!” and laughs. 

“I never majored in singing or learned it before,” Gwangseok says. I just was hoping I’d get more than 5 votes. I’m grateful they liked my voice. As someone who dreamed of becoming a singer, I’m glad.” 

No one wants to follow that, but Jeup feels like it’s going to be him. We hear from a few of the contestants, including Hwanhee from Up10tion, that the “guy in red” (Hyukjin) and “the guy in the ribbon” (Jeup) are ones to watch. Sunyoul says that Jeup is a “monstrous vocalist”, that he’s so good that it’s like he’s cheating.

We get to hear some of V34, ie, Jeup. It is some serious technique on display. Everyone seems to respect what they heard, saying that it deserves a standing ovation and stuff like that. But the vote tally doesn’t quite reflect that. He gets only 28 votes, putting him in second place. Some of them find if very strange, including Jay and Hwang Inhyuk. 

Geonu from Just B and Sunyoul from Up10tion both interview that they’re hesitant to team up with someone so good. “Because he’s so good, I want to work with him,” Sunyoul says, laughing, “but at the same time, because he’s so good, I don’t want to work with him.”

I can’t understand how on earth Kim Minseo was rated so low. I also think that Lee Minwook and Bain were much lower than they should have been. The fact that Yoon Inhwan ranked as high as he did is surprising to me -- for me, it was one of the worst performances of the teasers. I guess the guys and I have different taste in singers. 

After the reveal of the rankings, we hear from a few of the guys about how they felt. We hear from Lim Junhyuk and Seunghun about how they feel about being ranked so low, but we don't hear from Intae, despite him coming in last. Ah, MNET. I didn't even have time to miss you.

Dahee announces the next mission: The “Prefour” mission. Bain says, in English, “What’s that?” (He’s sitting next to Jay and using it as an opportunity to practice his English.) It’s where they make groups of four and perform one of these songs.

And you’re sitting there saying to yourself “TOMBOY AGAIN?!” but no, it’s a different Tomboy.

It’s is a good reminder that for Koreans living in Korea, kpop is just part of their musical sphere of influence, along with ballads, trot, and other genres. Often enough on Korean top 40s you’ll see very popular ballads, mixed in with the kpop. I think some Western listeners also like some ballads, but I think most of us aren't as interested in them, so we can easily forget how important they are in Korea.

To be clear, I differentiate between a song that is slow and an actual k-ballad. I just don't like 99% of k-ballads. The arrangements are usually straightforward and they’re played on vibraphones with cheesy percussion. Also, the style of singing is just not my favorite. and are always delivered in the most overwrought singing style ever, with way too much vibrato. It can border on operettic but a lot more nasal. I am not saying, for example, that the singing in the original of “Shall I Love You Again?” linked above is bad. I just saying that it’s really not to my taste. But meanwhile, if you watch the clip, the audience is so into it. They’re like, in tears. So who am I to say that it's bad?  This is a genre of music that just isn't for me. I will have to do my best going through this show.

Anyway, everyone’s a bit intimidated by the songs, many of which seme to be well respected classics. Detective Donghun from A.C.E. wonders out loud who would be able to sing Ditto because it has so much English in it. That must be a real issue for idols these days. Ditto is at least 50%, maybe 60%, English.

Speaking of English, my love Bain is speaking it still. When the guys find out that they get to pick the songs they want to do based on the ranking they got in the first round,  Bain says, in English: “I wanna go home!”.

Dahee explains that though the song is a group challenge, they’ll be evaluated individually. A “top tier” contestant will be chosen from each group and will get a benefit. The lower ranked trainees are spurred to promise to try even harder. 

We see a super brief clip of the guys running in all directions to choose the song they want -- I’m assuming we’ll see more of this later -- before we jump to… some time later.

4. BEAUTIFUL

 JINWOOK: His eyes sparkled in amazement when he saw you coming down the stairs. You’re wearing that yellow dress the color of lemons which he bought you. It fits perfectly on you. A ready smile was on his face as always. Whatever you say or do for him, those smiles gave you assurance of how he appreciates everything about you. Slowly you took the last two steps toward him. “I knew it will look beautiful on you,” he said, the smile never fading. “You’re beautiful.” He took your hand like you’re some royalty, turning you around.

SOOIL: “What do you think of me?” you asked him with anticipation. The question just fell on your lips. He suddenly raised an eyebrow. Alright, you were curious. His easy expression was back again when you decided to take it back. “Forget I asked.” He shook his head and said, “What do you mean? Do you want to know if I like you? I thought I already made myself clear on that. If that isn’t the answer then I’ll give you another one: I think you’re beautiful.” It was your turn to raise an eyebrow and sigh. “I know that,” you said, matching his smile.

MINSOO: The warm morning sunlight hit you after opening the window in your room. Messages from him greeted you first thing in the morning. He asked to see you before he go to work. When he arrived you took one last look in the mirror before meeting him outside. He leaned beside his car and he looked dashing doing nothing. He didn’t wait for you to come near him. The sunlight gave out a magical effect. It’s only 6:27am and sleep was still in your eyes. You can’t look at him but he held your chin up and said, “Hey, beautiful. Sorry for interrupting your sleep.”

JINHYUK: The muffled sound of people’s chatter with the music in the background combined weren’t enough to drown your thoughts. He’s just behind those glass windows yet his presence felt tangible. You looked away, hoping to clear your mind of the memories. Meanwhile, he was trying hard not to be obvious catching glances at you. Didn’t he choose to ignore you back then? Now he’s checking you out. You’ve always been beautiful in his eyes yet he thought of it as a superficial reason to be in love. He stood there contemplating going to you or let this moment pass.

CHANGHYUN: “Are you joking? You’re beautiful enough,” he stated, gazing at you. It wasn’t the first time he told you that but the heart-fluttering feeling relives the magic every time. “You don’t have to change the way you dress even how you do your makeup for me. Whatever makes you feel comfortable makes you beautiful. I don’t need much from you. What I want is for you to be happy.” It’s the first time he told you those things your heart can’t handle his sincerity and you were filled with love for this man who accepted everything about you.

WOOSEOK: You wrung your hands out of anxiety. Today you dared yourself to let him read what you wrote for him. Since he loves reading poetry, you tried doing one for him. If you want him to know how you feel, you thought it better to be creative. “Don’t you think I don’t notice your feelings?” he said when he was done reading. “Somehow I already have a clue. I like how you put it into words, though.” He took a step closer until your nerves became a mess due to his distance. You scolded yourself in your mind for not being able to speak. “I didn’t think someone will find loving me beautiful.” Closing the little distance left, he kissed you on the lips gently.

YEIN: Staring at the vast pink skies with the view of the mountain and trees below, you felt contentment and amazement. On top of that hill he was with you. “Beautiful isn’t it?” he uttered, standing next to you. “I like it here,” you replied. At the back of your mind you’re wondering why he chose to be alone with you when you went there with your friends. The wind blew just when you turned to look at him. He tucked a stray hair behind your ear absentmindedly like he normally does it, and you prevented yourself from hoping there’s something behind it.

GYUJIN: Slowly you paced the gallery as your eyes took in all the aesthetics. Paintings from both famous and amateurs hang on the white wall. Colors, shapes and emotions surrounded you. Awed, you stopped in front of a painting of the sky depicting after sunset scenery. That’s when someone joined you. As if you’ve been drawn to him, you looked sideways at his direction. He’s an art, you thought. “It’s beautiful,” he said, turning to you. You froze when your eyes met, disoriented. “And so are you,” he added. The handsome stranger left you in a state of confusion, still thinking about that remark.

HWANHEE: “Hey, do you think my sister will like this? I bought her a bracelet that matches mine.” You showed him the jewelry sparkling pink and lavender. “Beautiful,” he mumbled with his eyes on you. He cleared his throat afterwards, covering up the statement. That was cute, so you hid a smile. “She’ll love that for sure. Actually I think matching things are cute. Hey, I’m serious,” he chuckled nervously. “Mm-hmm,” you mumbled, trying to catch him. Seeing how he avoided your eyes and became quiet, you gave up eventually.

DONGYEOL: For the nth time you checked your appearance in the mirror. Earlier you sat in your room anxiously waiting for him to pick you up. Thankfully he came just in time. Your parents let him in and you were really flustered. He said hi and flashed you one of his sweetest smiles. You gave him a once over, enough to leave you breathless. “You aren’t ready for prom, I see,” he teased, making you fuss over the straps of your stilettos.  He came to you and helped you with it. “Relax,” he chuckled. “I’ll never leave your side. And I must say you look really beautiful.”

↬ The two of you spent a good amount of time that evening together, getting to know each other’s kissing styles so that you could be prepared for the party. Or, to you, it was more of a moment to get to know the whole act of kissing itself. After some time, you actually grew more confident and less scared of the party. Or, at least that’s what you thought in the moment.

But when you woke up the next morning, there was a huge lump in your throat. You were a bit on-edge the whole day, and your mind wandered back to thinking about the party any time it could. 

As Fridays were the teams’ only weekday free from practice, parties were often held on exactly those days, except for if there was a game the morning after. Games were most often either on Saturdays or Sundays, with sometimes a celebratory party on Saturday evening if the game went well. There weren’t any games until the nationals, so the whole weekend would be free for players to be hungover, so Wooseok had planned his party on a good day. After school, you went straight back to your dorm to get some rest before Jinhyuk would pick you up at 8. Right as you were done eating a quick dinner, Sojung came crashing in through the door.

“Girl, I saw this in the shop window today and I needed to get you it for tonight,” she said as she placed a shopping bag on the floor in front of you.

“Didn’t you have class today?”

“Yes I did, but since when does that mean I have to attend it?” You chuckled at her response but grinned, reaching down to the bag. You saw that it was from a shop you had heard from - not exactly a cheap store.

“Sojung, I can’t take this. It must’ve been super expensive,” you said, giving her a thankful yet sad smile.

She shook her head at you. “It was on sale, like 70% off! And give it back tomorrow if you want to, just please, please, wear it tonight.” You stood still, only thinking about it for a few seconds, before agreeing. You nodded at her and could instantly see how her whole face shone up. “Try it on, then! Go!” 

You picked the piece of clothing out of the bag, and - it was really pretty. It was a black shoulderless dress, with the sleeves merely a little bit puffed. It was decorated along the chest and sleeves with strings, and only held up by two strings over the shoulders. You were stunned. “Have I ever told you that you have great taste in clothes?” Sojung only grinned and you could really tell how excited she was to see you in it. 

You got changed quickly, and when you were done, you turned around for her to see you - and her mouth hung agape. “Wow. Just wow,” she said and you couldn’t help blushing. You walked over to the full-length mirror by the front door and watched yourself. You weren’t someone who usually dressed up all fancy; you usually didn’t have a reason to. But now that you had, you felt confident. You looked good. The dress hugged your body in just the right places, and it wasn’t too short or too long for your taste. You smiled at the sight in the mirror. 

Sojung’s voice soon interrupted your thoughts. “Jinhyuk is going to love it. And you.” And now you were blushing even harder. You hadn’t thought yet about Jinhyuk seeing you in that dress, and suddenly you got really nervous. He had pretty much never seen you like this, all dressed up, and you were unsure of how he was going to react. 

“Let me do your hair!” Sojung’s mother was a hairstylist, so she had been taught how to work with hair from when she was very young. She always braided your hair for your competitions and put your hair in pretty hairstyles for special occasions. This time, she put your hair up in a cool ponytail and gave your hair some pretty waves. Just as you were about to check yourself out in the mirror, there was a knock on the door. You checked the time on your phone, 7:41, before opening the door - and behind it stood none other than Jinhyuk.

“Oh, you’re early!” you exclaimed, a bit surprised as you didn’t expect to see him so soon.

“And you’re really pretty,” he said and grinned, pulling you in for a hug.

You heard your own heartbeat very loudly in your head. Did he really call me pretty just now?, you thought to yourself. You breathed deeply to try to collect yourself, and put a bright smile on your lips as you pulled away from the hug. Your eyes scanned his outfit; he was wearing a white button-up with thin black vertical stripes, and its hem was lazily tucked into his ripped jeans at some parts. The jeans’ holes over his knees were so large that his whole knees were sticking out - but it looked cool nonetheless. And on his feet, a pair of regular white sneakers that matched his shirt. His outfit was simple, to say the least, yet it made him look very handsome. “Well you don’t look too bad yourself,” you snickered and nudged his side with your elbow.

“Do you need some more time or are you ready to leave?” You nodded and went to grab your phone, and on the way back you saw Sojung who was still watching you with a big smile plastered on her lips. You pulled her in for a hug.

“Thank you so so much,” you whispered to her and squeezed her extra tightly.

“It’s my pleasure,” she said back, pulling away from the hug to smile at you. 

You walked over to Jinhyuk who was holding his out hand for you, and you took it in yours. You put on your shoes and waved a last time to Sojung before leaving through the front door. “How are you feeling?”

You two began walking towards the exit and you let out a small sigh. “A bit nervous, but I’m fine.”

“Don’t be,” His thumb stroked the back of your hand softly as you went out through the front door, heading towards the parking lot. “I won’t leave your side, and you know you can cancel the kissing if you want.”

You nodded to yourself, but couldn’t get any more words out of your mouth. You wanted to do it, you really did - you really wanted people to think of you two as a legit couple for the contest - but it frightened you. A lot. Just the thought of being that close to Jinhyuk, kissing Jinhyuk, in front of all these people made you dizzy. But you had to stay strong.

You two soon reached Jinhyuk’s car which was parked in the school’s parking lot. As the party was going to be in an apartment off-campus, there was a drive of a couple of minutes, but Jinhyuk filled it up by talking to you about all kinds of nonsense to calm you down. When you arrived at Wooseok’s apartment, Jinhyuk ran around the car to the passenger’s seat to open the door for you and help you out. You smiled at his actions and thanked him, and he threw his arm around your waist to keep you close before leading you inside.

The room you first entered was the combined hallway/living room, with big speakers playing some kind of EDM music and lamps shooting beams in green and blue all over the room. There was a smell of alcohol, so strong your nose itched a bit. The room was filled with students with red cups in their hands, some dancing slowly and out of sync to the music, some just standing upright and talking. “Let’s find Wooseok,” Jinhyuk said and you nodded at him.

The room was so crowded that it was hard for you to get through, and Jinhyuk’s grip on your waist tightened, making sure that you wouldn’t fall away into the mass. You two made it into the kitchen after a few moments, and there was Wooseok, chatting with a girl who was sitting on a kitchen counter. You hadn’t seen her on campus before, but you assumed she went to your school - but you thought she must’ve been in a lower grade than you, as she looked a few years younger. She had light brown wavy hair that framed her pretty looks, and dark freckles that were sprinkled across her face.

“What’s up, man?” Jinhyuk said when you approached the two of them.

“Hey, I’m glad you both could make it!” Wooseok snickered, a grin spreading across his lips. “Guys, this is Natasha.” He introduced the girl and she waved to you with a cute smile. “Natasha, this is Jinhyuk and Y/N.”

“It’s nice to meet you,” you said and Jinhyuk nodded next to you.

“You too!” Natasha exclaimed and pulled a hand through her big, fluffy hair to get it out of her face.

You could really understand why Wooseok liked her (if it was actually real and not just to get on better terms with her father, that is). Everything about her was pretty - her smile, her nose, her hair, her eyes. If Wooseok is actually using her, you thought to yourself, then this is awful. Then she deserves someone much better.

The boys soon got immersed in a discussion about some football game, and Natasha was pulled away after a little while by one of her friends to the living room-area. You weren’t particularly interested in the conversation going on, but as you scouted the room you didn’t notice anyone familiar, so you had nowhere to go. So you stayed right next to Jinhyuk. And his arm never left its place around your waist.

After a while, you felt a tap on your shoulder. Turning around, you saw someone you knew. Kim Jiyeon, a senior and the greatest batter of the softball team. You two weren’t exactly best friends, but as you were teammates, you knew each other well.

“Hey girl! I didn’t think you’d make it,” she rejoiced and pulled you in for a hug.

Giving her a squeeze back, you smiled to yourself at her excitement. “It’s nice to see you!” You two pulled away from the hug. “I didn’t know you’d be here.”

“Well, this guy forced me to come here with him,” she said and pointed towards the boy standing behind her - Lee Hangyul, the baseball team’s strongest shortstop. He was responsible for more double plays than any other shortstop in the league last season. He was also a quite nice guy, one of the few boys on the team who didn’t consider himself “too cool” to talk to you softball players. He and Jiyeon were sworn best friends, and according to them only so - though a lot of people thought there was something else going on between them.

The boys broke off their chitchat and you all five started small-talking together instead. The boys soon went to get some drinks, and Jinhyuk kissed your cheek as he mumbled into your ear that he’d be back any minute.

Jiyeon leaned against a kitchen counter before she started talking. “So... How are you feeling about the competition? Are you nervous?”

You were confused. What contest was she talking about? “Do you mean the national championships?” you asked, to which she shook her head and smiled at you.

“No, the one tonight.” You searched through your mind. Did Jinhyuk mention any contest? Had your memory been erased in some magical way? Jiyeon saw your struggle and spoke up again. “The kissing contest. The round of ~too hot~, don’t you know? You and Jinhyuk are up against Natasha and Wooseok. The couple the crowd likes the most wins.”

Your heart stopped. Was this for real? You weren’t only going to kiss Jinhyuk in front of all these people, but you were going to be judged by them? The thought of them watching your every move, how your mouth moved against his, made your stomach twist. Your mind went blank and you stopped breathing for a few seconds.

A hand on your shoulder woke you up again. “Y/N? What’s going on?” Jiyeon’s voice echoed through your head along with the loud music and you blinked a couple of times to try to see clearer. Everything was dark. Your breathing became heavier.

“I-I-I need to get some air...” you let out all in one breath before turning around and moving as quickly as you could through the crowd. There were people everywhere, dancing and hollering at each other. The tunes coming out of the speakers made your head hurt, and the extreme smell of alcohol didn’t make it any better. As you pushed yourself between the students, you felt a strong pain in your chest and your breathing intensified. I just need to get outside, you thought to yourself. I just need some air...

Finally, after what felt like hours, you found a back door that lead to Wooseok’s small backyard. Pulling the handle down with all the power you had left in your body, you let the door slide open and you threw yourself outside, letting it close behind you. You sat down on the grass and it was as if you finally let loose. Like everything just poured out of you. The anxiety over having to kiss him in front of someone, anyone at all, and the anxiety of knowing they will judge you from all that you do. You started hyperventilating, and now tears were falling along your cheeks nonstop. You felt like someone was choking you. The world was spinning and you reached forward with trembling hands to try to stabilize yourself to the ground.

Suddenly, your arms were pulled gently up over your head and your hands were held by another large pair of hands. “Breathe,” a voice whispered lowly.

You recognized it - it was Jinhyuk’s.

“Do it with me. Breathe in,” he said and really emphasized the in, signaling for you to take it slow. “and out.” And so he continued. You tried your best to follow him, even though it was hard.

And Jinhyuk was nothing but patient with you. He took it slow, and focused on helping you bring you up from all of this. His thumbs alternated between stroking the back of your hands and wiping tears off your cheeks.

When you eventually calmed down and could breathe properly again, you felt another wave of feelings wash over you - but this time, it was feelings of embarrassment. You had been sitting here crying like a total freak, in front of one of the most popular boys in school, a boy you knew talked to all his friends about almost everything - especially when it came to girls.

You looked away as he let go of your hands, and could feel your cheeks heating up instantly. Your hand went up to draw your fingers through your hair, a habit of yours for whenever you got embarrassed. “Are you okay?” the boy in front of you asked, seemingly worried.

“Yes,” you spoke in a weak voice, feeling like your voice wasn’t strong enough not to crack if you were to say anything else.

“What caused all of this? Is it the kiss?”

You shook your head. ”No...” you mumbled. “or, yes, kind of. I don’t know.” A couple of lonely tears ran along your cheek once again. “I heard about the... competition.”

“The what?”

“There’s apparently some kind of contest between you and me, and Wooseok and Natasha.”

You looked up at him after finishing your sentence, and Jinhyuck pulled a face you couldn’t quite understand, but he looked really confused. “What?!”

“Jiyeon told me about it, and...” You let out a sigh. “something just happened. I couldn’t control it. I needed to get out of there.”

Suddenly, Jinhyuck pulled his arms around you and engulfed you into a soft hug. “There’s absolutely no pressure to do this, okay? We can go back to the dorm right now if you’d like to.”

Shaking your head, you pulled away from the hug and wiped away the last of your tears. “I can go through with the kissing, it’s just the contest that I’m not up for.”

“I could go inside and tell them to call it off?”

You looked up at him with hope in your eyes. “Could you do that?”

He nodded and smiled at you. “Of course. Anything for you.”

A weight lifted off your shoulders and you could finally smile again. Did he really mean that? Saying that was really sweet of him, and it didn’t seem like he only said it for the deal - it seemed like he genuinely cared for you.

“Thank you.” He nodded and reached forward to cup your face, stroking your cheek with his thumb ever so softly, before standing up and walking back towards the house. But as he was about to enter, the door was opened by someone else - Seungyoun.

“Is she okay?” He asked, shooting a worried glance over towards you.

Jinhyuk nodded. “Just... be gentle with her,” he muttered under his breath before heading in to the party and letting Seungyoun walk over to you.

He stopped right in front of you and sighed, before saying “We need to talk.”.

Books - Wei

“Excuse me,” a quiet voice says from behind you, “can you help me find this book?” He holds his phone towards you.

It is open on the library’s website which shows that the book he is searching for is in the library: “I’ve been trying to find it, but I haven’t had any luck,” he says with a small laugh.

“Yeah give me one second,” you say with a small laugh turning back to the task at hand.

“Can I help you any?” He inquires watching you struggle to reach the higher shelves.

“Yeah, there should be a step ladder at the end of the aisle, can you get it for me?” You ask turning towards him.

He nods quickly moving towards the end of the aisle searching for the ladder which must have been moved to the edge of the aisle. He carries it back over to you and you thank him, stepping onto it returning the last of the books you had on the cart.

“Now, what book are you looking for?” You ask.

He turns his phone towards you showing the library’s website and the book he is looking for. You hum looking around the aisle you are on resting one of your hands on your waist while you think about where it might be.

“I think it’s a few aisles over,” you say gesturing to your left side, “if you still can’t find it, it might be best to ask the woman out front, I’m still learning where everything is,” you say with a small laugh.

He hums turning around and heading towards where you directed. You head back to the front to check for more books to put on your cart. There are only a few books at the front, but one of them is clearly the book that the man from earlier was looking for. You take that book taking quick steps towards where he went to take it to him.

“I found it,” you say holding the book, he turns towards you a small smile on his face, “I guess it was never logged out of our system,” you explain.

“Thank you,” he says softly taking the book from your hand, “what’s your name, by the way, I don’t think I’ve seen you before.”

“Y’N,” you answer with a laugh, “I moved here not long ago,” you explain, he hums.

“I’m Lee Jinhyuk, I come here a lot so you’ll probably see me again,” he says with a laugh.

“I’ll look forward to it.”

“You’re the one that said you didn’t have feelings for me in the first place.” Wei hollers from the hall way making you jump off the couch. “Wei, when the fuck did I say that!” You yell back walking towards him to his room and slamming the door shut. “You didn’t have to say it, your actions spoke for themselves when you went out with that guy!” Wei said in a stern tone trying to hide the hurt in his voice. “Wei, I told you from day one that I wanted to be with only you. Don’t you dare second guess my feelings for you.” You rebuttal. You were hurt and annoyed that he would even think that about you. “Y/n, you know that whatever this is, it’s complicated.” Wei repsponded as he made his way towards your frame. “I know it is but you need to know you’re the only one I want before you start accusing me of shit that I would never do!” You said as you placed your hands on his hips to bring him closer to you. “I know, I’m sorry I just lost my cool for a second.” Wei says as he brings your face closer to his and places a kiss on your lips. As the kiss deepened you moved your hands under his shirt to feel his toned abdomen. Wei knew exactly where this was going and took his shirt off for you. “You know Wei, next time you doubt my feelings for you, I won’t let you off the hook this easy.” You say as you shoved him on his bed crawling ontop of him seductively. “I will never doubt your feeling ever again y/n. But I can’t help but get jealous at times.” Wei says as he flips you onto your back. He then placed his plump lips on your neck and began to leave kisses. “Since I was in the wrong, why don’t I make it up to you baby girl.” Wei says causing you to look down at his smug expression, he knew you loved it when he used that nickname. You knew exactly what he was going to do and you couldn’t wait to feel his tongue. “I will take that as a yes.” He says as he sends you a wink and begins to unbutton your jeans. Whatever this was, you had no doubt that you both felt the same way towards each other and that was enough for you.

UP10TION BLUE ROSE; DETECTIVE AU PT2

A drags Sunyoul to a different room away from others and seemingly not part of the crime/murder scene. A warns him about the delicate case they’re dealing with, how it involves her personally because of the blue rose, which was most likely planted by her twin sister.

Sunyoul is confused and shocked not knowing what to do with the information and not believing her, constantly asking her if this was real.

Sunyoul: “what about the others?? you’re gonna tell them right?”. A places her hands on his shoulders to try calm him down.

“I’ll tell Jinhoo and Kuhn later on, it’s not that I don’t trust the rest of you.. it’s just.. it’s better when fewer people know, this situation is too fragile at the moment” A explains before letting his shoulders go. Sunyoul was the member that A trusted most out of Up10tion, when it came to work or outside of it.

Sunyoul knew this and nodded still having questions but deciding not to push A. Both parties just stood in front of each other for a while before A sighed and stirred a still confused Sunyoul back outside to the crime scene.

After a few more minutes of looking around and inspecting the scene JUST come together to discuss what they found and their theories. Kuhn approached their meeting as it ended. “We’re just about finished and ready to wrap up” He informed. 

A: “Before you go, I need to talk to you and Jinhoo alone please..”. KA and KU become curious but knew that they shouldn’t be involved, walking away from the Leaders, finishing up their work.

The leaders of JUST move outside, meeting on the gravelled driveway circling towards the back of the house. When they are alone both speak at the same time “She’s back”. M seems more concerned and panicked, A’s tone more confirming. “I know, i know, we’ll deal with it okay? just don’t panic” A assured beginning to be more frustrated than worried about the situation.

M: “I’m not panicking, I'm just worried about you”. M looks at A sympathetically. “Don’t worry, now go I gotta talk to Jinhoo about it” A sighed. M is surprised. “You’re telling them?? KA and KU don’t even know!” M exclaimed. A sees Jinhoo and Kuhn appear from the corner of the house.

A sighs once again, “Well it’s kinda important info so I kinda need to tell them don’t I? Marco just leave it to me and do as I say as co-leader and my friend” She insisted. M nods and walks away so the 2 leaders of Up10tion can finally talk to A.

“What’s this about? Sunyoul looked off after supervising” Jinhoo asked. “if this is about Wei..” Kuhn chimed in but A quickly cut him off. She warns them about her twin sister who is involved with this case making it a more personal and delicate matter. Kuhn and Jinhoo take in the new info and her warnings not to tell others.

Their meeting ends quickly with the boys understanding the fragility of A’s situation in their case. Before they both retreat back to their group A calls for Jinhoo. “Keep an eye of Wooshin..and Wei, okay?” she added. “Wooshin does look a little ‘shook’ about the situation” Jinhoo commented. A shook her head slightly as a small laugh came out. “I don’t think that was the right word to use but yeah he doesn't seem himself” A replied.

When A was left by herself she looked up at the night sky, clouds slowly passing the moon. More stars began to shine as the night got darker, all her thoughts disappeared as she admired the sight. Her view of the sky being framed by the house and the trees that were shaken by the breeze that had passed. “OH TOMORROW! 11;20!” Jinhoo shouted from the distance back to A, she only laughed again at Jinhoo’s antics and codes. 3 cases ago JUST found out that 11;20 were coordinates to Up10tion’s base from their agency and that they’ll meet every morning at 9 am. KU did not like getting up that early but at that time they were still in school so it just became routine but having to sacrifice their weekends for work.

When Kuhn comes back to the other members, Wei gets a phone call and takes it. “Where’s Jinhoo?” Bitto questions. “Leader things you know..” Kuhn replies. JUST packs the car ready to leave but wait for their leader as Up10tion does the same. Wei gets off the phone and informs the group that he’s leaving. “where? aren’t you getting food with us?” Xiao implored. Wei shakes his head ready to head off when Jinhoo comes back. “Where are you going?” Jinhoo asked his newest member. JUST get more doubtful of Wei but don’t say anything and just observe them.

Wei turns back to his leader and sees that A had arrived and makes eye contact with her. Wei gets nervous at the attention but says “it’s.. a small family emergency..”.

KU: “Sus..”

Hwanhee: ”Yah KU, we can hear you!”

KU shrugs it off saying “I know..” JUST smile towards KU’s attitude, it’s better to be honest and have a small bit of humour after work especially in their line of work. 

“Alright, we’ll see you tomorrow at our place at 9am for our first meeting with JUST on this case” Jinhoo instructed. A was surprised giving a look to Jinhoo about the lack of code, Jinhoo sees but dismisses it. Wei didn’t seem like a member of Up10tion by leaving early and his lack of code knowledge. He only kept getting more suspicious to JUST, Jinhoo could see but he trusted his members even if Wei was a rookie.

 "Kim Jinwook!"

 "What?"

 "I'm hungry, give me food."

 "I'm heading out to get meat with my members, do you want to come then?" He asks me.

 "OF COURSE!" I say, dressing up rapidly, excited because it's rare we go to these places. It's only on special occasions.

 Driving over there, Jinwook had to tell me to shut up because I was ranting about what I was going to eat 30 minutes before we got to the restaurant. There I came face-to-face with the other nine members of Up10Tion. I had only met 4 others before. Sooil, the co-leader who often comes over to our house to help write lyrics. Changhyun, who often comes over to help write the rap and get an idea of what the dance should look like. Yein, who often brings us food, so we don't starve. Last but not least, Dongyeol, the cute little maknae that shouldn't be hurt because he's so fluffy, but he's probably accidentally ran into the wall near the kitchen in a surge to get food that Yein cooked. One by one Jinwook introduced me to the ones I didn't know. Go Minsoo, aka Kogyeol, and he's the lead vocalist. Then there's Kim Wooseok, aka Wooshin, apparently he's really quiet, but really weird at the same time. He's Up10Tion's visual. After that there's Han Gyujin, another one of the lead vocalists, my opinion on him is that he could be the visual if Wooseok hadn't got the spot. Lee Hwanhee, a cute little child with a powerful voice. But the last one, he was the one who caught my attention. He was really tall, and went by the name 'Wei.' His name was Lee Sungjun. I say hello and introduce myself to them.

 We ordered our food, and I got up to use the bathroom. Wei excuses himself as well. We looked for the bathroom, an awkward silence overlaps us.

 "Kim Y/N, right? Your our leader's dongsaeng?"

 "That is correct… why are you asking?"

 "You know what never mind, forget I said anything."

 I take a short glance to him, who was standing  behind me, and in the process, accidentally hitting a table and falling flat on my back and tripping Sungjun. He lands on top of me, kind of supporting himself, but his hands landed on one mine and for a second I saw a red string appear that connected both our hands.

 S- Soulmate?

 Sungjun cleared his throat and quickly got off of me and lent me a hand. He pulled me up and I saw that same red string appear, even if it was for a second before he let go of my hand. I dusted myself off, laughing awkwardly as Sungjun flashes an awkward smile.

 I headed to the bathroom and washed my hands, staring into the mirror and wondering what the shit just happened?

 I shake my head, is that why…. Is that why he asked if I was Oppa's sister? Because he was my soulmate? And he could see it?

 Why is life so complicated???

 I went back to where now all the boys sat at, and shortly after the food arrived. We had bibimbap, and some really good barbeque. Although the position I was currently in wasn't that great. Oppa sat on my right and Sungjun sat on my left. I tried to ignore the flashes of red I see every time Sungjun brushed his arm against mine, or when our hands accidentally touch.

 "Y/N~ah, are you okay?" Wooseok asks me.

 "It really is! Oh hyung, when are we going to shoot the next U10TV?"

 "We can shoot another one after this, we are heading back to the studio right?"

 30 minutes filled with aimless chatter, and awkward tension (no pun intended) between me and Sungjun has passed and we were on our way to the studio.

 Jinwook was handed a camera by one of the staff and he turned it on facing the camera towards us.

 "Hana, dul, set."

 "TENSION UP! 안녕하세요!"

 "Wah, 안녕하세요 Jinhoo 입니다, my dongsaeng is here with us today," Jinwook points the camera toward me, which I wave to.

 "안녕!"

 "What do you want to do today?"

 "Sleep."

 "Yah!"

 "I'm kidding. 안녕하세요 Y/N 입니다. I'm going to MC with Jinhoo today, and we're going to be playing Hide-and-Seek, part two. As you know, Up10tion played this using Kuhn's mask in episode 56. This time, Wooshin brought a blindfold! So, we will be playing this here in the dance room, and hopefully I don't get caught. Manager-nim will be holding the camera this time so Wei gets to play this time."

 We cut off the part where everyone played rock, paper, scissors in order to pick who was going to look for us. Sadly, I lost.

 "It's Y/N again," I say to the camera, "Ah, we played rock paper scissors, I lost so I have to wear Wooshin's mask. Wish me luck."

 I put on the blindfold and waited until they told me to go. 2 seconds later I ran into a chair.

 "Yah!"

 I heard stifled laughs coming from the right side and I immediately went towards the sound. I felt bad for myself, losing my sight is very. . . Unfortunate. Because I ended up tripping over someone's legs.

 I groaned and sat up, taking off the blindfold. Oh. It's Sungjun.

 Since I caught Sungjun, it was my turn to "hide," which was behind my older brother.

 Luckily I didn't get caught again. Although, this time Hwanhee was taking revenge on Wooseok and woah déjà vu. Hwanhee ended up catching Changhyun instead of Wooseok. Good job Hwanhee.

 Ending the U10TV, which is going to be processed and edited by those people, they sent me and Sungjun to the convenience store to buy food and some drinks.

 Again, it was awkward walking there.

 "Y/n-ah. Do you like me?"

 "Why would you ask that of course? Why wouldn't I like you?"

 He laughs awkwardly, "Just asking."

 2 Months Later

 It's been two months since I met Sungjun and the others, and I spent almost every second of the day with them. Special privileges. It's been great. They're all so fun to be around, and Jinwook seems to be proud of being their leader.

 "Yah, Y/n-ah."

 "Sungjun-ssi! 웨?"

 "Can I tell you something, honestly?"

 "Go ahead."

 "좋아해," He mumbles.

 "웨?"

 "좋아해. I like you Y/N. I've liked you since I saw you, and I'm not sure if you believe in the whole soulmate tied by a red string thing, but it's true, and when I saw you, I thought I was the luckiest person alive," He said, scratching the back of his neck.

 I finally understood everything. In the two months, those unexplained times where my heart beats faster, I know what it is.

 "I like you too, Lee Sungjun. In fact, I think I might love you."

 JINWOOK: He greeted you with a hug the moment he saw you. “How was your day? Mine’s not really good,” he shared. “We’re the same, then,” you responded. “This day was really stressful.” You felt his hug became tighter. “Can we stay like this for a while? I missed you,” he said softly as he ran his fingers through your hair.

SOOIL: Tears started to form in your eyes when he approached you. “Congratulations,” he uttered with a smile. You fixed your eyes on that smile which strengthened you during your time in the university. He was the source of your inspiration, a dear friend, a special one. “Congratulations,” you echoed, blinking back tears. “Don’t cry on me now,” he teased, enveloping you in his arms. “We just graduated and that doesn’t mean we won’t be seeing each other ever again, okay?”

MINSOO: After using almost half of the tissue box, some of the heaviness still remained in your chest. Nothing prepared you about the news on your long-time crush. You squinted your swollen eyes to look at the guy who always looks after you—your best friend. When he finally came to you, he approached you cautiously. His eyes were wary. No words came from him and your heart felt peace after those hours of crying. He spread his arms open for you, his eyes conveying what he meant with the action. The tears came back and his shirt dried them.

JINHYUK: “Did you miss me?” he asked playfully. You only nodded because you can’t keep yourself from laughing at his cheesiness. He sighed happily before standing behind you. The next moment his arms were wrapped on your waist. You spent the minutes just staring at the children playing in the park although you weren’t thinking about anything. A stolen kiss on the cheek brought you back to your senses. You tilted your head to look at him. When your eyes met, you both smiled and everything in the background just melted.

CHANGHYUN: “Oh my,” you mumbled in shock and embarrassment. You saw how surprised you were by looking in his eyes. “I-I’m fine. You were amazed by the sound of it, but you focused on this awkward little problem you caused. “You’re right, we don’t know each other. Actually I thought you’re my friend. That’s why I hugged you. We don’t know how others might react.” He left but the image of him remained in your mind.

You’re losing it internally but you let him see the hurt more than the affection. I was looking at you and I know you’re not okay.” You stayed quiet, feeling his heartbeat. “Is it working?” He meant his hug. You smiled without him seeing. “More than you could ever imagine. YEIN: One by one you pictured all your dreams coming true. Getting into this university was all you ever dreamed of since high school. He came to you to congratulate you. “We’re going to be schoolmates again,” he commented. “Yes, I’m so excited!” you exclaimed, hugging him. Then you realized what you’re doing and you released him instantly. He was a soft shade of pink when you looked at him. “Um, sorry I got carried away.” He smiled like he was cool with it, that he wasn’t caught off guard. “No problem,” he said. “I’m glad there’s someone I know in this university and that it was you.”

GYUJIN: The look on his face pained you. He was all wide-eyed in relief and worry, fussing over you. “Where were you? You didn’t answer my calls and texts. I was restless.” In his distress his hands went from holding your shoulders to cupping your cheeks. “You could’ve been there when the accident happened. For the life of me I was so scared.” You sighed, touching his hand as you gazed at him. “I’m so sorry, Gyujin. Look, I’m not hurt. You can calm down now.” His eyes showed hesitation, so you took him in your arms. You felt him relaxed as he whispered how much he cares.

HWANHEE: You have seen him smile so many times, but the way he smiled at you earlier seemed different. It could be because things are going well with him and his family right now. And the fact that you both confessed to each other just today after being friends for years probably added to the reasons behind that glowing smile. You closed your eyes and the feel of his arms around you returned in a flash. It hit you that although he was with you every day, you still miss him when you’re alone. How you love that whiny guy.

DONGYEOL: Today would be the last day you’ll be seeing him. It was your decision and he’s not the one at fault. He was never the one to blame. Falling for him was easy but you were too scared that everything seemed difficult at this point. “You seem off today. ↬ You were not someone who longed for love. You could watch couples in the campus café and you think that you were happy for them - nothing more. It wasn’t something that you thought about daily, the need to fall in love or get a partner, unlike some of your other friends. You would always joke that your best friend Sojung was a hallway major, always strolling around the hallways talking to boys instead of actually being in the classrooms and listening to the teachers. You, however, studied as a real student would; but after school hours, all your time was spent working out or practicing. 

You were the greatest pitcher in your softball team, and that hadn’t exactly come easily. You had put down a great amount of practice in your younger years to get a scholarship in this college, which was the best one in all of Korea when it came to softball and baseball. But that wasn’t the final goal, only a pit stop on the way. You wanted to become one of the very best and play in the biggest leagues, and this education really helped you on your way. But in order to not lose your scholarship and get sent back to your hometown, you also needed to stay focused in class. Your coaches and teachers had made it very clear to you that they would not keep anyone in school who was failing the classes. Somewhere along the way, you had also become the team captain, thanks to your happy and positive nature that dragged your teammates forwards at every game against other schools. As a team captain, you have a great responsibility and can not slack around to expect everyone else to do hard work, just because you radiate good vibes - you need to be the one who practices the hardest and the most often, and motivates everyone else to do the same. 

So even if you had been wishing for love, there wouldn’t be time. You had to stay focused every minute in school so that you wouldn’t need to study overtime, and as soon as classes ended you made it to practice. And the little free time you had? It was needed to recover and rest your body so you could continue improving and grow even stronger. 

You had many friends who understood your situation. A lot of the girls in your team had similar positions, being on scholarships and needing to focus both in class and on field, but they were all very well aware that you were overworking yourself. Even the boys in the baseball team weren’t working as hard as you. But maybe they weren’t aiming as high as you either. 

There was one boy though who was very similar to you in terms of hard work. His name was Lee Jinhyuck; the baseball team’s captain and also their strongest batter. He was known to be one of the most popular boys on campus, as talent often brought fame - along with something else he had a lot of; good looks. 

Though this was something that might be changing in the future. Not his good looks, that is, but his fame and his status in the team. At least according to your friend Seungyoun, who was a baseman in the baseball team. 

The two of you were chatting a bit as you had just finished your practice, and he was about to begin his. “Well, he’s losing his status. You know Wooseok, right?” he asked and leaned his arm on the wall next to him in the corridor you two were currently talking in. You nodded at him and he continued talking. “He’s dating the coach’s daughter...” 

You couldn’t help but let your mouth hang agape. “Really? That’s insane...” 

“She’s a freshman, aswell...” You chuckled. That meant she was three years younger than you, as you were in your last year in school, a senior. “Word has it that he’s only doing it because he thinks the coach will see him as the best batter. And you know who’s got that position right now...” 

“Jinhyuck.” You were friends with a couple of the boys in the team, including Jinhyuck, though you weren’t really close to any of them except for Seungyoun. But he enjoyed gossiping, so you were aware of almost all the small in intrigues and things going on in the team. It felt almost like you were in fact friends with them, as you knew everything from what their personalities were like and what things they’ve said about their girlfriends. 

“Apparently it’s a cool thing to have a girlfriend, and it’s a cool thing to be picked by the coach. And, well, Jinhyuck hasn’t had a girlfriend ever since Siyeon...” Seungyoun muttered, really stressing the name of Jinhyuck’s latest girlfriend as they didn’t exactly end... well. You nodded and he checked his watch. “Oh, two minutes until I need to go. Let’s talk quicker.” 

You chuckled again. “I don’t really see the problem though. Why doesn’t he just get another girlfriend? Is that so hard?” 

“Well spoken from a person who hasn’t had a real lover in like... ever?” You stuck out your tongue at him. “But honestly though, don’t you know what she said about him? She thought he was too lazy and never wanted to spend any time doing anything other than like, cuddle. So he apparently isn’t really boyfriend material.” 

“Oh, is that so?” He nodded and you thought about it for a moment. From what you had noticed of Jinhyuck, he wasn’t someone who struck you as a lazy type. And he wasn’t someone who struck you as the do-not-date-type either. Nor the not-boyfriend-material-type. He was handsome, had a sweet personality, was fit and was really talented, so you didn’t really understand the fuzz. But again, you hadn’t been in a serious relationship that lasted for more than a few weeks since... You couldn’t even remember when. Did you lack that part that made you understand the dateability of boys since you hadn’t been interested, and since it hadn’t been one of your priorities? 

“Hey,” Seungyoun interrupted your thoughts. “aren’t you going to sign up for prom queen? Apparently the prom committee needs the applicants pretty early so that they can prepare for the voting.” 

You sighed. Becoming prom queen had been one of your biggest wishes, non-sport wishes, ever since you had been really young - well, isn’t it everyone’s? Standing on the stage in front of all your schoolmates, all the people who have voted for you, and accepting the crown, looking over at the person who’s just been crowned king- and right. There’s that problem again. The king. “Well, this year, they changed the rules. You’re only allowed to compete as couples. So first of all, I would need a partner-” 

“Already screwed.” You huffed and acted mad, pushing his shoulder lightly. “Okay, okay, go on.” 

“And second of all, you’d need to be a popular couple in order for people to actually vote for you. So we’ll see how it goes.” 

“I believe in you! You’ll just have to-” 

“Cho Seungyoun! Get your ass on field right this instant, you’re already late!” his coach yelled at him, and he quickly put on his helmet and waved goodbye to you before running away towards the field. You laughed at him as you could see his face redden up as he got scolded by the coach in front of all his teammates. 

You stood in your place for a while, leaning against the wall and thinking about all you had discussed with Seungyoun. Wooseok dating the coach’s daughter just to get an advantage while playing; your failed hopes at becoming prom queen in my last year of college; and Jinhyuck, who apparently is falling in the boys’ hierarchy. 

As you were standing there, lost in thought, suddenly Jinhyuck came off the court and into the hallway you were standing in. He waved at you and gave you a sweet smile, which you answered with a quick “hi”, before heading straight into the dressing room. 

And that’s when it hit you. You came up with a plan. A plan that could help both of you.

Wooshin and you were currently coming back from a date with the rest of UP10TION; he was gripping the steering wheel tightly from anger as you had been teasing him throughout the whole dinner subtly, by placing your hand on his thigh, rubbing up and down or moaning while slowly licking the ice cream from your waffle. Just subtly enough for the group not to notice what was going on but just enough to get Wooshin hard enough to send him into a state of panic that his band mates may see it so he took action by telling the group you were feeling tired.

“Wooshin-ah, are you okay?” You ask in a slow and teasing voice, while tracing his hard on with the tips of your fingers, your long acrylic nails scraping the zipper. “Stop… teasing me (Y/N). It won’t end well for you when we get home.” His voice lower, deeper and huskier than normal. Ignoring his threat, you slowly take the zipper in between your fingers and unzip his trousers.
