2024 Golden Globe Awards | Los Angeles, CA | January 7, 2024
Gucci gown
Let it be known my Roman Empire is painted a shade of aurora borealis green.
I’m biased. I love it. You’re buckling up for a rave. But everyone knew that, right?
I want it on record that no one should be surprised when they see this lewk on the TSS Favourite Outfits of 2024 list. And that I’ll devise some maniacal strategy to make it make sense to include in every annual list from here to eternity.
Let's get the obvious out of the way in that this shade of green could easily be interpreted as very snakelike and thus a nod to reputation and its forthcoming re-recorded version. I'd even happily apply it to the teal-y and springlike green of debut if we want to go debutation on this.
But if we are to talk about Gucci we have to talk about the precipice the house is upon right now. As it relates to Taylor, I suspect her dress (specific shade TBD - Chartreuse? Apple? Pear? Some other adjacent fruit that’s a feast for my eyes?) is a preview of Fall 2024 and a clear indicator of the path the new creative director Sabato De Sarno’s will take the brand in. Which is to say, muting the eccentricity of Alessandro Michele’s era of Gucci that brought the brand to a new level of renown in favour of something cleaner and sexier. Nicole Phelps for Vogue already noted that De Sarno’s first collection for Gucci — Spring 2024’s Ancora, meaning ‘again’ in English and released in September — evokes a Gucci when Tom Ford was once at the helm, praising De Sarno’s approach to “the upfront sex appeal of those ’60s-by-way-of-the-’90s shapes, and straight riffs on Ford hits” while “establish[ing De Sarno’s] essentials, focusing on cut and proportion, and repeating shapes for emphasis.”
Indeed, Taylor’s gown is directly reminiscent of a Fall 2004 look from Ford’s Gucci - all green sparkles and sexy disco energy. This makes sense when we consider De Sarno’s history and homeworking when he decided to take the creative director post. He told WWD, “Gucci to me equals luxury … the first fashion piece I ever owned was a Gucci jacket by Tom Ford. I still remember I traveled to Rome to buy it with my friend … luxury was really not part of our world. Television was the only way to see fashion for me back then.” He added, “My ambition is to build an aesthetic message with an edited collection that is mindful of Gucci’s heritage and close to my own aesthetics.”
When we consider my personal history with Taylor and Gucci, I don’t have to look very far to immediately picture one of my all time favourite Taylor looks — the 2014 Grammys when she wore a sparkling Gucci Première column gown which is not too dissimilar to this one. What can I say, I’m consistent. The shape, the perfect kiss-the-floor hemming, and obviously the divine colour that really pops on Taylor will have me swooning for a long time.
At the end of it all, what I come back to is De Sarno’s sentimentality to naming his first collection: Ancora. Again. He told WWD, “Ancora is a word that you use when your desire is not over yet … I want to fall in love with fashion all over again — ancora.” In the same interview he said, “I like words a lot, they have weight and a precise meaning, they convey emotions, so I like artists who use words.”
It dawns on me that Taylor’s light is shining at its brightest now as she highlights, celebrates, and - indeed - falls in love with all the versions of herself she has ever been. Revisiting her eras past again. And again. In every re-record. In every step she takes on stage. In every cutting line she writes in ruminating and revisiting the experiences of her life and translating them into song. She’s flitting, flirting, memorializing all her past selves in celebration of their summation of her current self. And that’s what this ‘era of eras’ has been.
So if this is De Sarno’s Gucci I say welcome. Ancora.

ELVIS GIVING ALL THE DOLLAR BILLS HE HAD ON HAND TO A SOLDIER.
The White House trip, late December 1970.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Elvis Presley (1) Army years, ca. 1958 and (2) December 1970.
PLANE TRIP FROM LOS ANGELES TO WASHINGTON D.C. ON DECEMBER 20, 1970. I had to snap into action to work out all the details for Elvis’s return trip to D.C.—lining up our airline tickets, making preboarding arrangements, booking our hotel rooms, and hiring limos to get us to and from the airports. There was no way to do this without spending some more of Elvis’s money — I charged most of it to his American Express card. A short while later, with Sir Gerald [Elvis' favorite Limo driver in L.A., according to Jerry] again at the wheel, we were driving back to LAX. It had occurred to me that we might need some cash during the course of the trip. I didn’t have any (not an unusual situation for me back then) and Elvis didn’t have any, either. All we had was his credit card and a checkbook that I’d found in his desk at Hillcrest. The ever-resourceful Sir Gerald spoke up and said that he knew someone at the Beverly Hilton Hotel who might honor a check for $500 on a Sunday night, so we made the stop there and succeeded in getting the money. Elvis handed it to me for safekeeping. We got to the airport and were the first to board our red-eye flight. As the rest of the passengers boarded we noticed that there were an unusual number of soldiers on the plane — guys coming home from Vietnam who had first stopped in L.A. and were now heading back east to their homes, just in time for Christmas. Many passengers recognized Elvis, and he was cordial with everyone who said hello. Before the plane took off, one of the soldiers came up the aisle to stand next to Elvis and talk with him. He told Elvis what a big fan he was, and Elvis took an interest in the young guy, asking him where he was coming from and where he was heading. I saw that the two were having a very friendly conversation, and my attention drifted after a while. It was refocused when Elvis put a gentle elbow in my ribs. “Where’s that money?” “What money?” I asked. But I’d seen enough of Elvis’s gestures of generosity to suspect what was coming next. “The $500.” “That’s all we’ve got, Elvis.” “You don’t understand—this guy’s just come home from the war. He’s going home to see his family. I want him to have the money.” The soldier got the $500, and I was suddenly in the strange situation of traveling across the country with Elvis Presley, [alone and] absolutely penniless. Excerpt "Me and a Guy Named Elvis: My Lifelong Friendship with Elvis Presley" by Jerry Schilling (2006)
A little something extra to add to this story, something possibly easy to understand, but anyway. Think about today… it's becoming increasingly uncommon to pay for things with real money, we mostly use debit/credit cards - even our cell phones and watches can be used to pay for a purchase. Back in the days there were places that only accepted real currency as a form of payment - it was the 70s. Imagine being alone with Elvis Presley, a guy who wanted everything done as quickly and easily as it could be (TCB), wanting or needing to buy something and you, the only one responsible for him, not having the means to buy it and having to find a way to do it fast, out of nowhere! Jerry really wasn't in an easy position at that moment, but everything turned out just fine.
Tumblr media
This is just for illustration purposes. Elvis' money clip.

Plum Enthusiast Community: Introduction
Hi, my name is Rozie Ramati. I am from Los Angeles, CA (born and raised.) I am a musician and an artist. I graduated UCLA summa cum laude with my bachelor's degree in American Literature in 2021.
There is so much I wish to see change in the world.
For art, I want people to take music seriously as a craft. I want people with an understanding of music across many boards- historians, instrumentalists, professors, journalists. —to be valued and prioritized for their professional opinions on the music landscape, especially for award shows like the Grammys.
I want streaming to pay. Laws need to be enforced on Spotify to give artists a living wage of 1 cent per stream instead of the current 0.038 cents per stream. My first headlining show in Los Angeles was in October 2024. It was for the United Musicians & Allied Workers labor union: https://weareumaw.org. UMAW is a dedicated and reliable source if you are interested in fighting for the rights of musicians. They have petitions linked in their Instagram bio.
For the political climate in America, I want the oligarchy that is forming to stop. I want the genocide of Palestinians to stop. I want there to be laws in place that prevent billionaires from buying social media apps in order to have power over our voices, jobs, mental health, and politics. I want the promotion of Hitler's ideologies and propaganda on social media to result in serious consequences. Elon Musk should never have been able to do a Nazi salute for all of us to see; there is no excuse for it. He did it twice. In Australia, when his Nazi salute was aired on their news stations, they blurred out his violent message to show their resistance. We can learn from them. I studied the Holocaust in depth at UCLA; I took classes and seminars such as: "Holocaust in Film," "Exile Artists," and so on. It gave me the depth and context I needed. That is why I know, with absolute certainty, what is happening in America. History is attempting to repeat itself. The only exception is that this isn't Nazi Germany; it is Trump's America in 2025.
The one thing the Trump administration and their crew of billionaires do not want us to know is that we outnumber them. Please read that again; we outnumber them.
Nazi Germany rooted so much fear & prejudice in their society that they were able to recruit the majority. The Trump administration does not currently have the majority. Trump admitted this himself when he said Elon rigged the election for him: "he (Elon Musk) knows those computers better than anybody… those vote counting computers… and we ended up winning Pennsylvania in a landslide." video link
I want the Constitution back on the White House website. I want us to abide by the Constitution of the United States. I want convicted felons and rapists to do time, regardless of their wealth or status.
I want us to return to our humanness, to value education and educated individuals, and to make a better world for our children and for ourselves.
Liberation should feel liberating. That is why I created the Plum Enthusiast community. I want to contribute to helping others understand the power they hold inside and how they can use it to achieve their dreams.
Our minds are the most important thing in the pursuit of our dreams and a better future. We must protect our minds, enrich them with tools that serve us and our community, and encourage others to do the same.
I will leave you with this: As much as Billionaires want to control Americans into thinking we have no agency and no way to take back our rights, we all know they are wrong. We outnumber them. As much as the Trump administration wants us to think Nazis have power in 2025, they are wrong. We outnumber them. The fact that we outnumber them is exactly what has driven them toward their extreme measures to maintain power and control. When they can no longer make money off of us, they will not have any choice but to change.
We have not stepped into the wrong timeline; we've stepped into an important one. When America comes together, it has historically been so beautiful to see. We've fought for our civil rights, women's rights, gay rights, and environmental rights with inspirational strength, compassion, and beauty before. That beauty is what is to come in our path toward liberation, uniting against this great evil. I am so grateful to be here and to do it with you.

Heyyyyyy I saw you were taking requests :)
Can we please have some NY and Louisiana hc’s?
Hii! Yes of course :D
New York:
-He likes to paint and read. His favorite things to paint are sunsets/sunrises, architecture (CA's Golden Gate, FL's Disney World, his own buildings, etc), and plants. His favorite types of books to read are psychological thriller, fantasy, and coming of age classics (occasionally romance as well, though he'd never admit it)
-He and California have little arguments where they talk about how similar they are to each other. "I have the Brooklyn Bridge!" "Well I have the Golden Gate!" "I have the New York Times, you copycat!" "No you're the copycat, I have the Los Angeles Times!" They're not really arguments though since these conversations usually end in laughter.
-Speaking of the NYT, he likes to journal. Whenever he can't resort to violence to let out emotions, he writes his feelings out on the nearest piece of paper he can find. Sometimes he burns them, other times he keeps them in a special drawer to read for later. He also likes to write little moments that occur in his life that he finds interesting; like eating good food, making a snowman, discovering a new song he knows he'll hyperfixate on for months, etc. He also likes to write books, though most of the time they're just little picture books you could read to kids because that's all he has time for
-I've mentioned this before, but New York plays board games with California. He wins against Cal in Monopoly but loses against him in Uno. New York also plays games (board games and party games) against his northeastern besties and he's very competitive when doing so.
-He's a fashion icon. The other states ask him for fashion advice and he delivers since fashion is a passion for him 💅 He's been told he could be a model, but he never actively pursued a modeling career bc of his statehouse responsibilities
-I feel like he'd be a huge fan of Taylor Swift, especially 1989 TV. Evermore's another one of her albums that he vibes with since a song called coney island's on it and bc it's a calming album for him :)
-He's friendly to Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. All three states are kind and don't annoy him, and New York appreciates that. They also all play in the snow at times. He also has a soft spot for Indiana, Wyoming, and Alaska.
-This one's a popular one, but my baby over here has insomnia. The only way he can get a true night's rest is if somebody's there to cuddle him ane calm his mind down, like *coughs* California. This fic by @alaskashigh is a great example of this if you want to read one :)
-Him and Illinois get along well. They buy each other coats for the winter and argue a lot about pizza and sports teams. Through this, New York managed to get along with Indiana and Minnesota, and now all three of them like to grocery shop together lol
-When that whole fiasco of the skies turning orange occured in the Northeast, the first person New York turned to was California, and rightfully so. California helped patch New York up and gave him advice on how to deal with stuff like that. New York told the rest of the NE what Cal told him so that they also know what to do.
-He shows he cares through gifts and actions. He doesn't say "I love you" very often, but he'd hurt anyone who hurts his loved ones, give you his coat when you're cold, make you some food, or plants specific flowers when he finds out what flowers you like. New Jersey usually helps New York with the planting part, and that's one of the rare times those 2 get along.
Louisiana:
-Louisiana hangs out in the woods with Florida and Texas just to get away from the Statehouse and to gossip.
-One of his favorite songs ever is House of the Rising Sun, and he never misses an opportunity to sing it. You can hear him sing it while he cooks, cleans, or when he does really anything. The states aren't annoyed about it though because his voice is captivating.
-He's a very comforting person. The states go to him whenever they need somebody to talk to because Loui can do it all: he can listen, cook, and make jokes.. whatever you need to feel better.
-He enjoys learning about old folk tales, urban legends, and superstitions in the US and around the world. The states often catch him watching paranormal true crime documentaries with a grin on his face, and the only state that's not unsettled by this is Florida.
-Speaking of Florida, he and Florida go on dates by doing the most dangerous stuff. Skydiving without parachutes, doing hit and runs, armed robbery in important government buildings just to make Gov mad, whatever crazy things these goons can think of. But on other times where they're feeling relaxed, their dates are just them cuddling or eating. They enjoy both bc they have each other :)
-(TW: suicide, death) If he was a normal person, he'd be dead a long time ago. He's been stabbed, shot at, beat up, hanged, basically killed, but since he's a personification he just sustained the injuries and went on about his day. When he found out he was a personification, he killed himself just to see what'd happen. Would he clearly see the paranormal stuff he likes so much? Would he see an afterlife? Imagine his surprise when nothing happened to him.
-He can read, but he just doesn't want to. He just likes to read his Mama's recipes and children's books. When New York makes a new children's book, Loui usually asks him if he can read it, and New York lets him.
-He was a nice kid in high school. Respectful to his Mama, probably indulged in some sports, escaped to the woods once in a while, and had a decent group of friends that were just as wild as him. He's the type of guy to not make any enemies, and he was one of those rare ones who were good looking in high school (I wish that were me lmao)
-He and Texas are buddies and cook together a lot. When Louisiana needs help with anything, especially natural disasters, Texas is the first one to make sure he's okay and vice versa. When Florida's off doing... something that definitely is a threat to his life and/or someone else's (aka being himself), Loui and Texas go to parties together. Loui gets drunk and usually almost blacks out whereas Texas only takes a couple drinks to make sure he and Loui get back home safe. They got each other's backs, basically.
-He and South Dakota get along most of the time, and the only time they don't is when SD talks about Pierre and pronounces it "peer". Loui doesn't take it too seriously, but they like to jokingly argue about it.
-He has a big heart and it's obvious. He likes to show love through his words and his actions. Like New York, he wouldn't hesitate to throw a punch to someone who has hurt you, but he also would stop whatever he's doing to make sure you feel loved and taken care of. He's almost burned the statehouse down once because he was comforting his buddy Arkansas, but California was around to stop this potential fire. He also likes to say he cares about you, you can occasionally hear him say je t'aime mon amour/mon ami(e) & tu es magnifique. (I love you, my love/my friend & you are beautiful).
That's all I have for now, thank you for the ask :D

About this event
Hi Grannies- Darren here.
Just thought I'd spend some time at my favorite bar before leaving Los Angeles for a while. So I'll be doing something new and crazy...
I’ll be hosting the bar's first ever MUSICAL BINGO- we've never done it before, and it could go terribly wrong or terribly right, who knows! Come on by to find out.
How does it work? Well, each ticket gets you at least 2 unique TSG's scorecards with a bunch of songs randomly placed on it, and instead of your host (yours truly) calling out random numbers, I PLAY the MUSICAL numbers on the piano! Get it, NUMBERS?! Cuz it's a PIANO BAR??!!
For every song I play that matches the corresponding box on your scorecard, you can cross it out- and if I play any 5 songs that make a vertical, horizontal, or diagonal line through your card- well that's BINGO baby! Or shall we say, TRAMP!
Now, this ain't a concert. During gameplay everyone is encouraged to hang out, sing along and enjoy our cocktails, and whoever wins a round along the way lays claim to any number of fun TSG prizes! And even if you don't win, you win by just coming to Tramp Stamp Granny's on a Friday night (during Happy Hour I might add... 🤪).
So let's give this a go, shall we? Lest we forget, Bingo is a game for Grannies...
So who's game?
__________________
Doors open at 8pm
Games begin around 8:30pm
$30 door entry/buy-in, includes 2 TSG "TRAMP" Scorecards to play, as well as a single "Jolene" shot to get the games started!
(or $25 without the shot)
Seating is first-come-first-served, but not required to participate. There's plenty of room to stand and play along.
After 10pm the bar resumes its regular service with live music singalongs led by our awesome house pianists. So stick around!

What the Heck? Gavin Newsom Shimmy Dances and Grins at Reporters As He Addresses Catastrophic Wildfires
Tumblr media
California Gov. Gavin Newsom has been taking a lot of heat—deservedly so—for the Golden State’s preparation for and reaction to the devastating wildfires that have torched the Los Angeles area. He was caught in an embarrassing fact check on live TV about a reservoir that was actually empty even though he had just said they were all full, he’s been caught up in a donation scandal where he asked contributors to use the notorious Democrat fundraising machine ActBlue, he’s shown a lack of leadership by saying things like "the local folks are gonna figure that out" when asked about the fire hydrants that didn’t work, and so much more.
But on Monday, it just got plain weird.
To wit: as he was being interviewed about the catastrophe, surrounded by the destroyed homes of heartbroken residents, he flashed his pearly whites and began a weird shoulder-shifting dance. No really:
I’m sort of at a loss for words with this one. What was that? It’s not only behavior that is totally inappropriate for the situation, but it’s also downright bizarre.
Presidential material? I think not:
As CA Wildfires Torch His Political Career, Gavin Newsom Launches a Personal Fact-Check Site
Gavin Newsom Gets Nailed With a Brutal Fact-Check Live on Air About Fires
He was talking about the future of the destroyed neighborhood of Pacific Palisades, but frankly I’m not sure anybody heard what he was saying because they were wondering just what the hell he was doing:
While discussing the potential of property speculators swooping into the once coveted neighborhoods afflicted by the fires — Newsom grins ear-to-ear and does an effective shoulder shimmy while trying to calm residents’ fears. “I was just talking to Josh Green, the governor of — down in Hawaii,” Newsom says with an apparent chuckle and toothy smile. The well-gelled governor then shimmies his shoulders up and down while saying: “[Green] had some ideas about some land use concerns he has around speculators coming in, buying up properties and the like so we’re already working with our legal teams to move those things forward and we’ll be presenting those in a matter of days, not just weeks.”
The internet wasn’t about to let this one slide by, and creative (and funny) users didn’t disappoint. Perhaps Gavin thought he was auditioning for a bongo video?
Fox News contributor Raymond Arroyo, who also put this and another similar moment to music, had a good line when he asked, is he “auditioning for a boy band?”
I’m not going to speculate on what’s behind this strange behavior, but I can tell you this: as a resident of the City of Angels who knows a number of people who have lost their houses or who have been evacuated, it seems highly unseemly to me. I enjoy mocking Gov. Hair Gel, as many like to call him, because he deserves to be roundly mocked whenever possible. He has been failing this state for years, and he’s continuing to fail during these awful fires, and I do not forget that—even when there’s a comedy moment like the bongo-playing—we are living through a profound tragedy.
Sometimes when you want to cry, the only thing you can do is laugh.

WHITEY AND ROSE
Chaim Whitney (Whitey) Sall was another fantastic stroke of luck for me in my life and career.  Circa 1968, Benny bought Whitey’s company – Western Non-Ferrous Metals.  It was a metals trading company located in West Los Angeles.  I think Ben bought Whitey’s company for Whitey’s knowledge and reputation plus his export experience and business.  Whitey’s father owned Girard Smelting and Refining, the second largest copper refinery in the US before the Great Depression. Whitey and his brothers all worked at Girard and received a metals education second to none in that part of the business.  I need to digress for one minute to say that in 50 years of business, I have never seen a business more complex than the metals business; from mining to melting/smelting/refining, to manufacturing and then back to recycling.  I left the business as President of the biggest gorilla around and I am sure I didn’t know 15% of the complexities of the industry, versus 10 years in the Auction industry was really 2 years 5 times over. Whitey and his brothers all went on to become experts and very successful in various segments of the metals industry.
Ben also bought the Ted Sall Metals Company and the George Sall Metals Company. Teddy was the smartest since he was the only one to sell for cash instead of stock. According to Whitey, the Sall brothers were always very competitive amongst each other trying to prove who knew the most about the business to their dad.  Girard went BK during the Depression, but the boys were well educated.  Whitey went to the Wharton in Philly, the Sall’s hometown.  During his career working for his dad, Whitey would board a train and take cross country buying trips.  Since there was no telex, text, or email, stopping in major cities, visiting the big Jewish junk dealers in the town, buying, and calling in the purchases daily to Girard, usually having dinner at one of the dealer’s houses before getting back on the train to continue to the next city was the way it was done.  Ironically, the hosts usually had daughters of marriage age, and their dad could think of nothing better than this tall, handsome, rich young Jewish man at the dinner table for his daughter. This scenario finally caught up with Whitey one day in Los Angeles. Misha Berg, owner of Berg Metals (the largest non-ferrous scrap dealer west of the Mississippi at the time), had a daughter Louise, who captured Whitey’s heart and hand in marriage. A great deal of future successful LA junkies got their start at Berg Metals.  I met Whitey in late 1969 when I was sent to LA to work and learn from him.  He told Ben he was 60 and was slowing down and needed a young man to eventually take over the business.
DMC also had a processing plant in Cucamonga, CA at the time, which was 50 miles East of LA. So, in November of 1969 Diversified moved my wife Margie, my 1-year-old daughter Julie, and me to Los Angeles to work for Whitey. Since Julie was the only grandchild of all 4 grandparents, you could imagine how popular that made me. We moved to a two-bedroom apartment in Encino, about 35 minutes commute to the WNF office on 3rd and Martel; right down the street from Farmers Market. Although by then I was buying scrap, attending conventions, and traveling the US, LA was quite a culture shock for Margie and me. We had no friends or relatives, which was a lot harder on Margie than me, since I was busy at work all day.  We lived at the beautiful Balboa Biltmore apartments, with underground parking and a swimming pool, and the rent was three times what we were paying in St. Louis. I may have been the only one in the building that had an American car and wore a suit and tie to work.  Even so, at $17,500 a year and a company car we were doing just fine.

The band’s self-titled 2021 debut album became a breakout moment, winning critical praise and sparking an international tour. Follow-up LP Fairweather Friend goes a step further – absorbing the sonic attack of their live shows, it balances this with studio finesse, allowing the San Francisco four-piece to become the band they’ve always aspired to be. The Umbrellas' self-titled 2021 debut album was a breakout moment in an otherwise grim year, winning critical praise and fueling tours with everyone from labelmates Papercuts to Fucked Up. Follow-up LP Fairweather Friend goes a step further – balancing the rambunctious sonic attack of their live shows with studio craft and finesse, allowing the San Francisco four-piece to become the band they’ve always aspired to be. It's a record overflowing with highlights. The addictive, upbeat melodies of introductory track ‘Three Cheers!’ are matched to an impactful percussive punch; ‘Say What You Mean’ finds The Umbrellas working with total confidence, letting the song ride out to its chiming conclusion, four voices working in precision. ‘When You Find Out’ offers rotating notes of guitar punctuated by a vocal that pushes past angst to accept a world full of hope. A lean 10 track affair, it grasps towards beatific pop while fuelled by a sense of risk-taking and the precision that comes from long months on the road. The Umbrellas coalesced in 2018 around a group of musicians with connections to the legendary San Francisco record emporium Amoeba Music. Singer and guitarist Matt Ferrera had previous links with bassist Nick Oka, as well as the powerhouse drummer Keith Frerichs. A chance encounter with Morgan Stanley singing karaoke at a Fourth of July party cemented the line-up around an avowed thirst for melody. “All of us love really earnest pop songs,” Nick points out. “I guess we got to a point in our lives where we wanted to be genuine.” Playing shows at San Francisco’s vital DIY redoubt Hit Gallery, The Umbrellas would share line-ups with local heroes such as April Magazine and Cindy. Recording their debut album across a two-day spell at Matt’s parents’ house, the results won a devoted cult following. The experience of frequent touring bonded them tightly and allowed the volume to tick up a little higher (and higher...) and and feeding a desire for their next record to more closely mirror the energy of their live shows. “I think we got tired of people saying, oh you’re so much louder than I thought you’d be!” laughs Matt. “Our early recordings are sweet and earnest… and we wanted it to be louder.” Kicking off sessions in November 2022, the band used an ad hoc space Matt created in his basement, which allowed the sessions to be a little more relaxed in terms of timescale than their debut. “We gave ourselves more space for this album,” says Keith. “We wanted time to sit on the songs, and really work on them.” Capturing their thrilling live dynamic on tape, The Umbrellas are at once more physical and yet also more controlled on their new album. Take opening track ‘Three Cheers!’ – the peppy, sun-soaked rush masks a barbed lyric, courtesy of Nick Oka. “It’s a pseudo-political song about power struggles that occur in a job situation, or a friend group. It’s an observational song.” ‘Toe The Line’ has an unkempt, rollicking sense of energy, the playful relationship analogy of the lyric pushed to the speed of light by Keith’s just-chaotic-enough punk drumming. ‘When You Find Out’ meanwhile epitomises their unified, egalitarian way of making music – with The Umbrellas, each voice counts. “It sounds different from any song we’ve ever written together,” says Morgan. “It shows how much we’ve grown. Trust helps us to build the songs. It’s definitely a team effort.” It's also a record of ambition. ‘Say What You Mean’ stretches past the four-minute mark, the viola performance informed by Estonian minimalist composer Arvo Pärt. ‘Gone’ was the first song attempted for the new album, and the last they actually finished, endless re-writes transforming it into a manifesto of control and release. Taken as a whole Fairweather Friend is a bold indiepop triumph, crafted with purpose and attention. Taking their time over each note, the four-piece have strengthened their songwriting, adding depth and assurance while unlocking their potential. Some bonds last a lifetime – The Umbrellas are ready to capture your heart. Read the full article
