Músicas que mencionam ou fazem referência a outras bandas em suas letras (e que eu acho incríveis), parte 1:

Death Cab For Cutie - We Looked Like Giants (2003)

Na referida canção, o Ben Gibbard faz referência ao Jesus and Mary Chain nos versos: "do you remember the J.A.M.C and reading aloud from magazines?". Certamente uma música autobiográfica. Imagino que o Ben Gibbard escreveu essa à luz das memórias de alguns de seus romances colegiais. Tem até uma versão folk do Ben Gibbard tocando essa música ao vivo em algum evento em Washington DC, em 2007. Acredito que está no youtube, dê uma procurada lá.

Uma curiosidade é que quando o DCFC toca essa música nos shows, geralmente, o Nick Harmer, baixista da banda, assume uma das guitarras. Isso me leva a crer que ele é o compositor de algumas linhas de guitarra dessa música. Ah, inclusive, eu conheci o Jesus and Mary Chain por causa dessa música, olha que incrível. Música do disco Transatlanticism (2003), do Death Cab For Cutie.

Pavement - Range Life (1994)

Na canção supracitada, o Stephen Malkmus faz referência direta ao Smashing Pumpkins nos respectivos versos: "out on tour with the Smashing Pumpkins / nature kids, I, they don't have no function / I don't understand what they mean / and I could really give a fuck".

Tal citação rendeu a maior treta entre o Malkmus e o Billy Corgan, que se estendeu na mídia durante anos. Reza a lenda que o Billy Corgan até brigou pra tirarem o Pavement do line-up da edição de 1994 do Lollapalooza, informação esta que ele alega ter sido criada pela mídia pra fomentar um conflito desnecessário e que ele nega de pé junto até hoje.

Quando você pensa nas alfinetadas que o Billy Corgan deu no Pavement ao longo dos anos, fica um pouco difícil não acreditar nessa história da tentativa de boicote ao Pavement no Lollapalooza.

Logo ali, em meados de 2010, ao descobrir que tocaria num mesmo palco que o Pavement na edição do Planeta Terra que ocorreria em São Paulo naquele mesmo ano, o Billy Corgan não mediu esforços ao usar o twitter para fazer comentários maldosos, chorar suas pitangas e expor seu ressentimento pelo Stephen Malkmus.

Na ocasião, o frontmen do Smashing Pumpkins disse o seguinte: "Descobri que o Smashing Pumpkins irá tocar com o Pavement no Brasil. Vai ser um daqueles típicos funerais de Nova Orleans". Como se não fosse suficiente, ele continuou: "É engraçado como estes que apontaram um grande dedo de “vendidos”, agora são os maiores infratores…Eles não tem amor”. É ressentimento ou não é?

Aparentemente, o Billy Corgan não gostou muito de ver sua banda sendo mencionada de maneira "maldosa" ou desajeitada na música do Pavement e contraiu um rancor absurdo por conta disso. Em outro momento, o líder do Smashing Pumpkins até falou que é "impossível se apaixonar e morrer de amores pelo Pavement". Ele não poderia estar mais errado.

Acredito que o Billy Corgan transformou a menção feita pelo Malkmus em algo muito maior do que realmente é. O famoso "pegou ar", como diriam meus conterrâneos. Como vi num comentário há algum tempo na internet, eu acredito também que o Pavement apenas tirou um nome da cartola como o Weezer fez ao mencionar o Green Day em uma de suas músicas, é como reservar um lugar. Essa treta toda tomou proporções absurdamente desnecessárias, como consequência de um acontecimento muito menos denso e ofensivo do que aparentemente foi.

Ainda na mesma canção, logo após mencionar o SP, o Stephen Malkmus faz uma citação bem mais ponderada e até elogiosa ao Stone Temple Pilots nos seguintes versos: "Stone Temple Pilots, they're elegant bachelors / they're foxy to me, are they foxy to you? / I will agree, they deserve absolutely nothing / nothing more than me". Respondendo à pergunta do Malkmus: sim, os STP também são sexy pra mim. Ótima música do disco Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain (1994), do Pavement.

Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks - Jenny & The Ess-Dog (2001)

Por último, porém, não menos imprescindível, o Stephen Malkmus realiza uma menção direta ao lendário grupo de rock britânico, Dire Straits, através dos seguintes versos do refrão da canção supracitada: "kiss when they listen to 'Brothers In Arms' / and if there's something wrong with this, they don't see the harm".

O "Brothers In Arms" é um disco de 1985, do Dire Straits. Quando você escuta o disco depois de ler esses versos do Malkmus, as músicas ganham um significado diferente e passa ser mais interessante escutá-las se você estiver envolvido numa trama tipo essa criada (ou descrita?) pelo vocalista e principal compositor do Pavement, nessa parte específica da música.

Música bonitinha demais do disco homônimo de estreia do Stephen Malkmus com os Jicks, de 2001. É impressionante como o Malkmus acertou bonito nessa, como em todas as outras músicas que fez, tá de parabéns. Aparentemente, o músico gosta de mencionar suas paixões e influências musicais nas letras de suas músicas.
