[eurovision-revisited]

Eurovision 2006 - Number 30 - City Chix - "All About You"

This is little bit of a weird one, not only because it's a one-ear experience (sorry - I've linked the studio version below, but this is the only current clip of the actual national final performance). City Chix are two actresses, Laura McMonagle and Jade Lezar, who were only known to the UK public for their roles as schoolgirls in Scottish soap opera River City. They had no form as singers or in music at all.

Presumably they'd both been to stage school and had sung into hairbrushes in front of the mirror, but they'd not troubled any other track. Perhaps that's not too unusual though, given the writing team behind this. It's Deni Lew and Pete Glenister again. Last year, they were the team who attempted to get Katie Price to Eurovision. Someone else who had no previous singing experience. They were trying to do it again, this time with Wayne Hector who had worked on a couple of UK national finalists previous and would go on to have two Eurovision songs in the next decade.

This time at least both Laura and Jade can hold a tune. All About You is truly hummable and toe-tapping simple pop tune about a selfish, self-interested, self-pitying partner who is surely going to get dumped in the near future. It's got a highly unusual trick for Eurovision in that it's got a key change... ...in every chorus. And that lifts it. Although Laura and Jade can sing, they lack energy and the verve that the song requires. There's a distinct lack of commitment to the anger the song requires - although the harmonies are fun and their voices work well together.

It's probably one of the best simple pop tunes of the year, it just needs the oomf that all the other girl bops this year have turned up to eleven. All the art on display here is in the song-writing rather than the performance. Nevertheless, given the standards of the UK national final, it stands out for being both distinctly British and fun. There are people here who know what they're doing.

It came a distant third behind the top two who were running away with all the points including the winner who would bring the UK national shame again when transferred to a Eurovision stage - even as the UK public thought they were laughing at Europe and Eurovision.

Outside of this song and performance City Chix didn't sing again, and River City finished its first run in 2007. Laura has gone on to have a solid career as a TV actress in supporting roles, while Jade seems to have disappeared from screens entirely. The BBC department responsible for choosing songs really needs to move away from creating groups specifically for Eurovision and actually getting some proper singers in. Maybe next year...

THE KNITTING SAGA BUT ODY PULLS A BRUCE WAYNE

okay, bear with me for a moment. odysseus' perspective in all of this would be fascinating. and you know what is also fascinating? the way we can do whatever we want in this AU. so we can and will keep baby Astyanax alive.

to start with, Ody doesn't kill the baby. obviously. the reason is that, while he's having his fascinating little soliloquy about the morality of child murder in JAM, some terrified nursemaid that had been hiding somewhere in the room (I imagine her behind a conveniently shaped vase) picks up a dagger and stabs him in the shoulder from behind.

obviously she fails to do the deed, and he quickly and almost automatically kills her. but he's still stabbed. non-lethally, but enough to greatly hinder him.

Ody decides to go back to his people to get first aid. he can't bring himself to kill the baby, but he also can't just leave it there for others to find, because there's no telling if the remaining Trojans would rescue the boy, or if the Greeks would take him as a prisoner/slave or adopt/lose him somewhere where Odysseus can't ensure Zeus' prophecy won't come true. so Ody takes the baby with him.

the soldiers are,,, not impressed.

Eurylochus, looking at the infant: so, uh. what do you have here, captain? Odysseus, avoiding eye contact at all costs: a smoothie-

Eurylochus in particular is beside himself thinking about the implications. but overall people are too happy about finally going back home to really make much of a fuss about it, so it's fine (for now).

anyways Odysseus is still on edge about the baby's (and everyone else's) safety, so at first he tries to bring the boy with him everywhere. but his injured shoulder doesn't allow him to actually carry the kid too much. so that job falls to Eurylochus.

Eurylochus is soooo enthusiastic about the prospect, especially when the infant starts biting his chest, trying to nurse.

the baby: h o n g r y eurylochus: ARGH! GET YOUR GODS' DAMNED KID, BRO! odysseus: it don't bite eurylochus: YES IT DO

Odysseus prohibits everyone from using the baby's real name, both to keep its origins a secret from potential enemies, and to avoid getting attached to it (in case he actually decides he wants to kill it). so Eurylochus nicknames the baby Aphe, from greek "αφαιμάσσω", which means "to leech". because the damn brat keeps biting him.

eventually he and Poletes get into a heavy debate about whether or not it's mean to call a baby a bloodsucker, and Ody, who'd been having a crisis of faith, steps in and settles it for good.

from this point on, Astyanax the Prince of Troy is officially dead. and Odysseus is bringing home his infant son Aphemachus the Prince of Ithaca. etymology is somewhere along the lines of: afaimasso (to leech) + machos (war) = Aphemachus (the blood-sucking war; the war that sucked our blood)

Eurylochus is the one who Aphemachus had gotten attached to the most, due to all the carrying (and the biggest boo). He cries all the time when they're apart, and only Poletes seems to somehow be able to distract the boy, so they end up watching him in shifts.

aphemachus: *wailing in the dead of night* eurylochus, groaning: poletes, your leech is awake. poletes, also groaning: until the sun is up it's your leech.

Odysseus at the same time is still having doubts, so he doesn't trust himself to be too close to the baby.

those thoughts will haunt him for years, and will eventually play a huge role in their relationship, even after Ody starts forcing himself to spend time with his new son to forge a bond that would hopefully stop Aphemachus from destroying Ithaca.

Aphemachus indirectly saves Poletes' life. because when they reach the cyclops' island, Poletes stays behind with the majority of the soldiers to look after the baby. as a result Polyphemus doesn't kill him.

the downside is, Polyphemus almost gets a drop on Odysseus, and in an effort to push him away from danger Eurylochus gets severely injured. his right shoulder never quite recovers, and very deep down he blames Odysseus for needing help in the first place, because not freezing up in battle is the first and most important lesson they were taught as children, and then Ody went and froze up anyway.

sidenote, in Mutiny later on Odysseus will intentionally aim for said shoulder, exploiting the weakness that Eurylochus will have been very put out by and insecure about. just to add to the overall drama.

what none of them know yet, is that Odysseus had royally pissed off Zeus by ignoring his 'friendly advice' of infanticide. so much so, in fact, that Zeus tasks Ares with ensuring that Aphemachus grows up to destroy Ithaca.

as a result, poor kid grows up with the voice of bloodthirsty God of War in his head, constantly trying to convince him that everyone secretly hates and wants to kill him, that he's been stolen from Troy for nefarious purposes, and that it's his duty to avenge his REAL family. so, basically, your standard run-of-the-mill gods-induced paranoid schizophrenia.

odysseus: so, what do you want for dinner? ares: YOUR HEAD ON A SPIKE aphemachus: a bagel ares: NOOO aphemachus: two bagels

as you can guess, the poor boy's mental health is... Not Great™. he grows up a difficult kid, sensitive, too smart for his own god, prone to angry outbursts. think a cross between Damian Wayne and Jason Todd. he's also very paranoid, and remember that Odysseus still has doubts? Aphemachus can sense that, and that scares and angers him more, which makes him lash out, to which Odysseus also tries to keep his distance even more. he doesn't have much experience at actual hands-on parenting, and it doesn't help that he's not sure if he has a right to act as a father to the boy he had indirectly orphaned and directly almost killed.

poletes, exasperated: aphe, dear, we've talked about this. you know violence is never the answer, right? aphemachus: right. aphemachus: violence is the question, and the answer is YES-

so the most consistent positive influence Aphemachus has in his life are Eurylochus, Polites, Perimedes and Elpenor - until the latter dies and Perimedes decides to stay away.

Eurylochus is the stone-faced stern mother hen. he's the one that makes lists upon lists in his head of what the baby, and later toddler, needs. he enforces bed time, makes him eat as healthy as possible on the ship, etc. as such, his status as 'favorite' is quickly revoked once the kid grows old enough to complain.

the new favorite is Poletes, who spoils Aphe rotten and has a hard time saying no to anything. he's the fun uncle who's always down to play games.

Perimedes and Elpenor are like semi-responsible older brothers, who teach him about all kinds of stuff. Perimedes is the type to give Aphe lots of different chores to keep him occupied, and Elpenor, in contrast, tends to whisk the kid away to get him to relax and unwind. he also likes to teach Aphe about stars and constellations. meanwhile Peri 100% had handed toddler Aphe a knife as a prank to test everyone's situational awareness (think Stabby the Roomba), and got shit from everyone.

eurylochus: let me see what you have! aphe: a knife! ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ eurylochus, going through all stages of grief simultaneously: NO!

Ares, while he detests lying and 'cheating', doesn't want to wait until Aphe grows up to make him wreak havoc. so instead he starts trying to trick the kid into accidentally causing bloodshed. and most of the time he targets Polites, because the peace-loving fool is an affront to everything Ares stands for.

this results in Aphe often running in between someone's legs at most unfortunate times, spilling liquid where people walk frequently, hiding fish hooks in food as a 'joke'…

it comes to a head with a contraption born out of every inch of cunning Ares possesses (not much), all Aphe's wild child imagination and many of Perimedes' trap-making lessions. it's a glorious thing, straight out of something between Home Alone and the Final Destination series.

Nobody ever really catches him, blaming the near-accidents on pure bad luck. Poletes never once notices that something is amiss, thinking he's just clumsy. the only reason he's still alive is because Elpenor is somehow always there to run interference.

Elpenor is the only one to suspect Aphe, but, since he's a dumbass alcoholic, nobody believes him, even his boyfriend Perimedes. Ares gets fed up with this and starts making Aphe target Eple instead, but before anything could really be done Ruthlessness happens, and they come to stay with Circe.

elpenor: I fear no man aphe: (✿◠‿◠) elpenor: but this thing… this thing scares me

it's only after Elpenor's untimely death that Perimedes starts to take his concerns seriously, but it's too little, too late. it's actually an honest to gods accident that Aphe has nothing to do with, but Peri had sat through so much paranoid, drunken rambling from Elpe that it just clicks to him. he blames Aphe, and, despite not voicing his concerns (because nobody would believe him either), he makes it abundantly clear that he doesn't want anything to do with Aphe anymore, to the boy's dismay.

finally, a few important notes on continuity:

in this AU the journey is a bit slower-paced than in canon, so instead of Act 1 happening almost at once after they left Troy, in the Knitting Saga after the Polyhemus fiasco, pissed off Poseidon decides to torture them first before the execution, so they are lost at sea for a couple years in between Remember Them and Storm, before Poseidon gets bored and decides to kill them for good. then they spend a year with Circe as she cooks up a way to send them into the Underworld, in the meantime hoping that Poseidon cools down somehow. then the Underworld and the Thunder Sagas happen a couple months apart, and then Ody (and Aphemachus, who is kept alive by the gods purposefully, so he has a chance to grow up and destroy Ithaca) spend 5 years with Calypso, and then another year trying to get to Ithaca.

Telegonus still exists in this AU, despite not being the son of Odysseus and Circe. instead, he is the unwanted son of Circe and some unnamed sailor from that first batch that she had taken pity upon and let her guard around. because of being born a demigod and living on a magical island his aging is a bit wonky, but he appears to be around 12-15 years old. he's a charming, confident, precocious child, who takes after his mother in personality and approaches. him and Odysseus get really close in the time that the crew stays on Aeaea, because Telegonus is not (as far as Ody knows, at least) prophecized to harm Ithaca and Odysseus desperately misses Telemachus; while Telegonus just imprints on the first dad-shaped adult he sees. Aphe is sad and desperately jealous.

fun fact, Ody considers leaving Aphe on Calypso's island. Aphe, who's like 8-9 at the time, almost expects him to do so. only on the morning of their departure do they have a heart-to-heart about how Ody was a shitty, emotionally unavailable father, and how Aphe only ever wanted to be loved.

Infinity Inc. (1984)

I think it deserves to be included. But really I love all the characters so much and it's such a cozy read. I feel like no one reads it because it's old and JSA-adjacent (BOO! Read for the old men you cowards!) but I really cannot overestimate how much the characters are likeable and fun and also how mad you get at what DC did to them afterwards and also WHAT DC DID TO ROY THOMAS WHILE IT WAS PUBLISHING, literally treating him so badly and then going ""well sales aren't growing and are staying the same so I guess it's cancelled :/"" like THEY DIDN'T FORCE HIM TO REMOVE HALF THE STUFF THAT MADE IT SO GOOD IN THE FIRST PLACE. Also Roy Thomas wrote the best bisexual man being in love with opposite gendered siblings story ever and I know it was an accident but like... I need more people to read it so I can feel validated about this...

If you read her comics out of chronological order, it’s the height of unintentional comedy that Helena Bertinelli witnessed someone going out as a vigilante inspired by the huntress and had complicated feelings about whether or not she was responsible for their actions and if this person was a facet of her legacy, but like, she just went to therapy about it. gee I wonder who should have considered doing this. or who should have maybe stepped back and been self aware enough to reflect on their hypocrisy. this doesn’t remind me of anyone or any situation that might be in your future helena. she should get to murder bruce as a treat I think

Character Crossovers I think would be fun

Kendra Saunders (Hawkgirl) and Cassandra Cain (Batgirl) - I think that they have some neat parallels and contrasts, most obvious one being suicidalness.

Grace Choi and Damian Wayne (Robin) - I know they met briefly in WFA or Vixen (1 of the webtoons) but I mean like :P In main continuity. If there was a Grace, Anissa, Dick, Damian story I think it would be fun because Grace and Anissa got Dick's most jerkass era and I think Damian has a somewhat idealized view of Dick, so he'd be like. Oh. there are people who don't like my brother.

Hector Hall (Silver Scarab) and Norda Cantrell (Northwind) and Raven and Koriand'r (Starfire) - I think that Norda and Raven have some interesting compare/contrasts with each being raised in isolated pacifist societies... BUT Norda was sort of in charge (according to the leader of his society) of getting rid of the person who was viewed as the world-destroying evil... whereas Raven was viewed as capable of unleashing that evil (well not for Feitherans but for Azarathians :P) Then Hector is the Dude Fated to Destroy the World, but he didn't know about it, he got to have a regular childhood, unlike Raven... Kory should also be here b/c Hector has a very domineering personality and I want someone to push back against him :P Norda is tempted to get a bit pushovery with Hector (tho IG that is more pre Norda's training). I think Kory would also beef with Norda some if she projected Raven onto Hec and saw that Norda was willing to just kill Hector without trying to stop him or alerting his friends as to what was happening.

“She experienced the same thing, Y/n. We have 4 more days to figure this out. Four people. Keep your friends close, but your enemies closer. Don’t only do this for you, but for the girl who went missing. My dear friend, Gordon. Barbara Gordon.

That night have flown by. It was currently day 4. Thursday. That meant you had one day till the weekend. Three days till you’d disappear. You and Damian had agreed to start going around interrogating people. Though, you ‘forgot’ to tell him that you were also going to be asking people about Barbara Gordon. If she experienced the same things as you, she was clearly aware of what this person was trying to do her. Maybe if any of the students had beef with her, it would be a perfect trap to capture her. And you might be able to predict something that could happen to you. Last night you decided your best guess would be Jason. He was three years older than you, but he seemed fishy when it came to women. He was a constant flirt, and he could’ve dragged Barbara out somewhere and no one would question him simply because of his attitude and looks.

You were currently walk to Gym class right now. You had it twice in a week. It was a very good feeling to die at eight in the morning. Since Jason and Tim didn’t appear to be the killer, Damian was helping you with this whole ‘interagiront’, he couldn’t be it, so that left you with asking people who they thought was the most mean in the school. During gym it appeared to be Cory, in English it was Josiah, and in Math it was Hector. It seemed the school couldn’t agree, but to decided to question them all. Though, before you would do that, Damian asked you to name some suspects with him. He had also helped put a few suspects on the list. Just for extra protection.

So here you were, walking towards the big library door. It still amazes you in every way. How calmed the people looked, the smell of lavender, the peaceful feelings, and so much more! A certain someone caught your eye; Damian. You quickly walked over to him and going to sit down on the bean bag next to him.

“Hey”! You said cheerfully as you also went to open your book.

“Hey? You seem awfully cheerful today”? He said with a confused laugh at the end.

“I am very happy, thank you very much! I just found out my first three suspects. How many people did you get written down”? You questioned.

“Thirty-two……” he said with a sigh.

“Thirty-two?! Not everyone’s a suspect Damian”! You said before bursting out laughing.

“Just-Just-Just pick out your top ten, okay? By the way….., I was thinking about Barbara and all, and I was just wondering if you wanted to look for her? What if we question everyone about it? We might be able to find her Damian, don’t you think?

“Y/n, Barbara’s been missing for a year. I think-I think it’s safe to say she’s gone, Y/n. Dead. Permanently taken out. Forever. There’s no hope for her anymore, we need to focus on the present right now. You’re still here, right? We need to figure out who this is, okay?

“I guess……”, you said with a heavy side.

“Anyway, I was also thinking a lot about this. Whatever happened to Barbara should have been prevented, but it wasn’t. If-IF something happens to you, it’s best I know where you are. I won’t let anything happen to you. I promise”, he stated before leaning in closer. But instead of pulling away, you leaned closer and closer and closer, until your lips were almost touching. And then they did touch. Your body felt hot, and your stomach began to have a swarm of butterflies flying around in there. It lasted for about five second before you gently pulled away.

You both just looked at each other before you made a bold move. You leaned back in and kissed him back, hard. Your arms instinctively went to rap around his neck and you went to place your hand in his hair. His hands went around your waist and pulled you to sit on his lap. You too began to roughly make out. But then it hit you, you were in public place! People could see you! You tried to squirm away but his lips traveled down to your neck and began to suck gentle hickeys.

“Mfm! Damian, we’re-were in a public place! People can see us”! You tried to whisper.

“You were the one who kissed me”, he said with a grin.

You did finally manage to stop kissing each other and began to work on who was going to question the suspects. Right now you were going to question Cory because Damian said it sounded like the ‘sweetest’ name out of them all. Damian agreed to question Hector and Josiah saying he didn’t then to ‘get any ideas’, and he added that if they wanted you dead, they could just kill you on the spot. It was a reasonable answer, so who were you to refuse?

Luckily for you, Cory was in your L/c so hopefully you could get the chance to question him. Damian had, luckily, agreed to skip this class and go question Hector and Josiah who were currently in English together. You fully trusted Damian. He never gave you a reason not too, expect the time he lied to everyone about believing you were ‘crazy’, but he had a pretty reasonable explanation. At least, you hoped he was telling the truth.

You were currently listening to your teacher yapping about the history of the language you were studying. And there Cory sat. He had thick, light-brown hair, paired with ocean dark blue eyes. He was wearing the Gotham uniform with a light blue tie on as well as a few scars on his hand. You wondered if he had gotten them from fights if he was involved in any. He was bulky so you wouldn’t be surprised if he did. You were very intimated by him, but you needed to know who this person was. So, with a heavy sigh, you walked pass your desk and sat down next to him. Hopefully some kind of conversation would spring between you too, you could question him about the letter and Barbara. You understood that Damian didn’t want you asking question but you were certain that asking questioned about her was the best thing to do.

As you sat down beside him, he and the teacher gave you a weird look, but ignored you. You thought socializing with Cory would be A LOT easier. Though, fate was clearly proving you wrong today. So you moved onto the next step. You ‘accidentally’ bumped your arm into your pencil.

“Um, excuse me. Could you pick that up for me?”, you said with a softer voice.

He roughly sighed and bent down to pick up your pencil and put it on your desk with a very loud bam!

You knew he was already grumpy, so you didn’t talk to him for the rest of the period. Though, when you both exited the classroom you clearly had other plans.

“Um, hi! My names Y/n. After Gotham Academy I want to go to Stanford to study criminology. I was just wondering if I could ask you some questions about a student who went missing last year? Barbara Gordon’s her name”, you said softly trying not to anger him more than you probably already were.

“Barbara Gordon? Never heard of her”, he said with a gruff voice.

“Oh, okay? Didn’t you hear of any missing students”?

“No! I’ve known everyone in this school. There’s no Barbara Gordon that goes here”, he said with a scoff.

“But-but that’s impossible! A friend of my mine said she went here. There’s no way she couldn’t have. He-he talked with her! He told me about it”! You said with your voice getting louder.

“He’s lying then! Listen, if you really wanna know if there’s a “Barbara Gordon” that goes here, you can look it up on Wilson’s computer. You just gotta sneak in there around 10 o’clock”, he said with a roll of his eyes, and then went to walk away.

This wasn’t possible! Damian couldn’t have lied about Barbara. He was your friend! And you just knew Barbara Gordon existed. She just had too! Cory, could be it? He could be lying about Barbara to make sure you didn’t catch onto him. He was also very strong so he could easily take you down with one blow. He did also mention that he knew everyone in this school. Maybe he had a grudge against you. You decided to go find Damian after all your classes were finished.

As you were walking towards his dorm he quickly opened the door and yanked you inside.

“Did you find anyone”? You questioned.

”They were together, Y/n. I talked to them about any grudges they had against people. They said they were against the ‘Blondies’ because they had unnecessarily constant sexual intercourse with any guy that appealed to them. I’m more suspicious about Hector though. He was sweating a lot, and was really bad at lying. He changed up his story a handful of times. Did you find anything on Cory”? Damian questioned curiously.

“I’m suspicious of him. He was very ignorant and seemed to be nervous. I think I’ll write down Cory, and then Hector tomorrow. Meanwhile we can question more people later today or tomorrow”, you said with a gentle smile.

“As long as you’re okay. But I’ll kick his ass for you anytime beloved”, he said before kissing your cheek and guiding you to his bed.

“I’ll go get us some food, you stay right here”, he said before walking out of the dorm. You felt bad, but you needed to figure out if Barbara was really at this school a year ago. So you made your way down the halls and onto the third floor. As you enters the room, opened Mr.Wilson’s laptop, and typed “Barbara Gordon” into the machine. It began to load. 1-5-10-15-20-25-30-35-40-45-50-55-60-65-70-75-80-85-90-95-100%! Loading….. ………………………………………………………………………. NO FILES FOUND ON “GORDON, BARBARA

Hi, my name is Batz and I occasionally write fanfiction.

Out of all Astyanax Lives AU, I really love your characterization of Astyanax the most. He have just the amount of sass and disobedience that really stands out for him. He really took after Odysseus but even more of a bastard, which is like ridiculous. I also love how genuinely disrespectful he is, in comparison to Odysseus who's probably too tired dealing with force beyond his control, Astyanax is just spite. Also love how he still claims being the son of Hector and the son of Odysseus. I love that you make his relation about his past complicated, typically I see that he's on Odysseus side, he love his dad, but he's a bastard about it I think that's why I love this one particularly. I wonder how his relationship with Telemachus is like, and what would he pursue in adulthood

To be honest, I started developing Astyanax as a character after writing him in a whim, because child characters are often overlooked or underdeveloped. And then in a mad scientist moment, I added ADHD and sassiness into the mix, keep in mind his circunstances and you get a gifted funny kid who is prone to self reflection. But it's still a kid, but you shouldn't understimate him for that. And it gives an already good story a new sense of freshness.

Btw, it's funny you mentioned it, because I'm currently writing another scene where Astyanax talks about being so self-conscious 😂

About Telemachus...well, I'm still cooking~

BUT as I said in another post, think about it as a Dick Grayson and Damian Wayne dynamic, it's kinda like that.
