it's kind of funny to me that my stepfather, a professional artist, finds watercolors intimidating because they're hard to control or correct, and says people are always intimidated by oil paints but that's very surprising to him because they're so forgiving
because like... oh yeah, I guess that makes sense, but my adhd ass is looking at all the tools and prepwork and planning and wait times involved in the logistics of even attempting oil painting and completely shutting down in fear before we can even get to a point of discussing 'what using the medium is actually like' lmao
#you know what it takes to watercolor? water. and color#like I have watercolors and watercolor paper in my purse. boom! done! no forethought required and minimal cleanup!! lmao#also I barely have the patience for WATERCOLORS to dry properly between steps are you kidding#me @ oil paints I am daunted by the complexities and unknowns#about me

considering doing a bentonite clay wall set up in the terrarium. its abt 14 inches tall so there will be a Bit of a concern over moisture balancing (enough that the clay wont dry out. not so much that the plants drown) but ive got the stuff for a real well draining soil on the way + LECA to act as a drainage layer. do still like the idea of a jewel orchid or two acting as the Central piece but auughhh idk what else to pair w them
#the nursery has an absolutely gorgeous stock of variegated ficus repens right now which do well in a terrarium type environment. cushion--#--moss would be very cute but if i want to make a kokedama later on a sheet moss would be better. could propagate + then use That for it#do like the idea of having a couple 'shelves' of silicone-d rocks on the back wall breaking thru the moss but then idk if the springtails--#--would be able to get up there to eat dying plant matter ?? ive seen some REAL wild set ups w water + verticality that never seem to--#--worry abt their cleanup crew drowning or w/e so it Might be fine. idk !

in the process of re-scaping my 5 gallon tank! this was the first tank i ever set up with live plants (about three years ago) and the old scape was a random piece of spider wood, a chunk of manzanita wood from petsmart, and the limestone rock currently helping weigh down the spider wood now in the tank.
i’d been meaning to re-scape it ever since my last betta passed about six months ago, but didn’t get around to it until this week when i found the big spider wood piece in storage. All the larger anubias is new but the one with smaller leaves has been in there for about three years, along with the java fern, which is coming back from some kind of issue; it used to be huge and hopefully will be again.
i’m planning on getting some moss and possibly air plants for the parts of the scape that are above the surface, but I don’t have a super definite plan for all of this yet. once the wood is fully waterlogged i’m going to adjust placement and then decide what should live in the tank besides my loyal nerite snails.
#my fish#now i just gotta do some maintenance on my 20 gallon today#a partial water change and algae cleanup#and getting rid of extra plant growth#i’d transfer extras to the five gallon but the 20g has a major snail problem and i will not risk cross-contamination lol
