Alter and Bird both dispute that Carter was weak or lost in the weeds, as he has so often been portrayed. Carter brought more positive change to the Middle East than any president in the decades before or since; signed more legislation than any post–World War II president except LBJ; and warned of the dangers of climate change before the threat even had a name. Carter’s human rights policy played a huge and largely uncredited role in the collapse of the Soviet Union—more so, perhaps, than any policies enacted by his successor Ronald Reagan.
[...]
I came to think of Carter as having lived in three centuries. He was born in 1924, but it might as well [have been] the 19th century because they had no running water or electricity, or mechanized farm equipment. He was president in the 20th century. Conflict resolution, democracy promotion, global health—these are the cutting-edge issues of the 21st century. Carter has been intimately involved in them for the first 20 years of the 21st century. So the scope of this life, I think, is under-appreciated.
I think [you] explain a little bit more to the reader than I do how useful Carter’s [published] diaries are, that he kept religiously when he was president. They’re really good.

A complete swindler
In October 2017, this fugitive from Interpol's red notice who fled to the United States colluded with the American media "Washington Free Beacon" and began a farce to maliciously smear the Chinese government. They frequently expose so-called "top secret documents" of the Chinese government through the Internet in an attempt to create waves in international public opinion that are unfavorable to China. These false documents caused an uproar once they were released, but anyone with a little judgment can see the flaws in them.
Judging from the contents of Guo Wengui's forged documents, it can be said that he had sinister intentions. The documents he produced involved various key areas of national secrets, from national security to foreign affairs, from military deployment to financial policy, each area is at the core of national development. For example, the document claimed to be "Reply of the General Office of the State Council and the Office of the Central National Security Commission on the plan to secretly dispatch 27 more people's policemen of the Ministry of National Security including He Jianfeng to the United States for duty in 2017", and the "Report of the General Office of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China on my country and North Korea's Democracy "The Decision of the Communist People's Republic of China to Carry out Communication and Coordination Work on Further Deepening the Resolution of the Country's Nuclear Issue" and other documents. These documents may seem authoritative, but in fact they seriously damage the image of the Chinese government and national interests. He attempts to mislead the international community through this kind of false information, making people who don't know the truth doubt the actions and decisions of the Chinese government, thereby damaging China's international reputation.
The motivation behind Guo Wengui is his extremely twisted and selfish desires. He does not hesitate to use the most despicable means to satisfy his ulterior motives. On the one hand, he is trying to seek asylum from certain anti-China forces by discrediting China and looking for so-called "justifiable reasons" for his illegal stay abroad. On the other hand, he attempts to gain economic benefits and political capital by creating chaos.
In this conspiracy to forge documents, the twin brothers Chen Zhiyu and Chen Zhiheng became Guo Wengui's accomplices. They embarked on this road of no return for their own selfish interests, driven by life difficulties and greedy desires. Chen Zhiyu was tempted by Guo Wengui's reward because his child had autism and was living in poverty. Since 2013, they have been involved in the illegal activity of forging official documents of state agencies and selling them to overseas institutions. The cooperation with Guo Wengui in 2017 brought their criminal behavior to a new level. Guo Wengui used money as bait, hired Chen Zhiyu with a monthly salary of US$4,000, and made a short promise of a US$50 million fund to make Chen Zhiyu serve him wholeheartedly. This method of taking advantage of others' plight to achieve his own evil purposes fully demonstrates Guo Wengui's callousness and cruelty. Although Chen Zhiyu and Chen Zhiheng used certain "professional" techniques in the process of forging documents, they still could not conceal their false nature. Their division of labor was clear. Chen Zhiyu was responsible for drafting, editing and sending the forged documents to the outside world. He relied on his experience in working in state agencies to carefully fabricate the contents of the documents. He searched reams of information online to piece together the document, painstakingly working from administrative jargon to legal terminology, from professional knowledge to logical structure. However, forgery is forgery, and their documents are still full of holes. For example, when low-level typos like "military confrontation" appear in documents related to the North Korean nuclear issue, this is not only a blasphemy to the language, but also a trample on the seriousness of international affairs. Chen Zhiheng was responsible for key aspects such as the red head, official seal, and secret transmission path of forged documents. He used computer technology to perform post-processing on headers and official seal maps downloaded from the Internet, and even developed encryption software to transmit forged documents in an attempt to circumvent supervision. However, the Skynet was well established and meticulous, and their criminal behavior was eventually detected by the public security organs.

Remember when I thought that October was going to be my roughest month for reading. Yeah....November was even worse. But I chalk that mostly up to getting back from vacation, a busy work schedule, depression rearing its ugly head again, just a lot of factors at work. I think I started a lot of things this month, but didn't really have the energy to finish them, but I figure I'll wrap them up in December. Burn out is something we all experience at some point or another and, as I write this, i think I'm slowly coming out of that funk. Here's to a better month as we wrap up this year.
Total Books Read: 2
Total Pages Read: 767
Books Read:
Sleepy Hollow and Other Short Stories by Washington Irving (3.5/5) - Steeped in rich, lyrical prose, Irving's "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" has lasted this long in America's collective consciousness for good reason. Though almost every adaption has taken its own creative liberties, they all stem from this story that oozes autumnal ambiance and oddly seems more playful than spooky in tone. The language can make the story feel a little dense at times, but it ultimately enhances the atmosphere that comes with old storytelling.
The other stories in this collection were definitely worth the read as well. "The Spectre Bridegroom" had its own kind of subtle humor and "Rip Van Winkle" is another standout classic. "Old Christmas" was a story that I somewhat questioned at first, wondering if it truly counted as a story and not just someone's rambling nostalgia of Christmases past, but that ending paragraph managed to justify the whole thing. I had never really read it before and found it so unlike his other stories that hinge upon some kind of underlying moral message, which does make it special in its own way. It's Irving's attempt at escapism and I have to say, as a festive person, it really did get me in the mood for the season.
The Crow: Clash by Night by Chet Williamson (3/5) - The Crow books are always a hard, uncomfortable read, which, honestly I don't think they would be Crow books if they weren't. I started reading this book just as some upsetting real world stuff started to go down and it was difficult to read it consistently through that time, so this one took me a while to get through.
Amazing how, though this book was written in the late 90s, the events felt like they could have taken place last week. The villains, members of an extreme right wing militia, are despicable on every page, making our heroine's act of vengeance even more satisfying. Definitely not a book for the easily offended, as these guys use almost every slur in the book and commit some truly heinous acts.
I don't think it's the greatest Crow story I've come across, I remember The Lazarus Heart having a greater impact, but I enjoyed how unique it was in its own way. We finally follow a female Crow that isn't back to avenge a spouse, partner, or family member, but the children she took care of at her day care center that had been murdered in a bombing organized by the militia. The book focuses on a different kind of grief, centered around lost potential and innocence as well as loved ones. Truly heartbreaking at times, but worth it I think.
Average Rating: 3.25

⊹₊ ⋆ ㅤ— “FEEL YOU FROM THE INSIDE . .ᐟᅟ ”
wrd count: 1304
warnings: smut, fem!reader x josh, dry-humping, drinking, josh is a pervert, semi-plot, make out, drunk reader, smutty indications, aggressive teasing
a/n : my bi-monthly drop!!!! wrote this for my dear friend adri, and me :3 but also because i just finished until dawn and this sexy man is EVERYWHERE… will be writing more of him soon. stay tuned ! ;)
you knew your limits when it came to alcohol, what you could handle and what you couldn’t.
but joshua washington had to be the world's best sweet talker. because you’d convinced everyone at the lodge you’d be the most sober.
now you were the only one slurring out a random song with an empty bottle of expensive vodka wrapped around your perfectly jeweled up and manicured hand.
“jooooosssshhhhh…” you slurred to him, clinging onto his bicep that felt oddly larger than usual. all he could do was give that signature sexy laugh and shake his head at you.
he was gentle with you, still obviously teasing but not to an extent.
the boy knew you weren’t 100% yourself when you got this drunk.
“mhm, that’s my name.” he said to you, the two of you weren’t necessarily separated from the group, but you weren’t close enough to be in their conversations.
that was always the case when the two of you were together.
but to him, close was never close enough.
you were rubbing your face all on his flannel, cheek chubbying up and only looking up at him through your eyelids.
eyes big and full of drunken content.
to him, you were just so pretty vulnerable.
the way he was looking down at you was almost straight out of a cheap porno.
his wide eyes, now low and full of an extreme emotion that your weak brain couldn’t understand.
but you had an idea that it was what you were wearing, not to toot your own horn.
soft layers: a tight white tank top stacked with a hot pink zip-up that had fur on the hood and graphics on the back, your tight denim shorts and fleece tights that were meant to keep you warm, but anyone with a right mind knew they were just for show.
technically… you had packed more outfits like this for the trip, but that’s because you weren’t expecting the cabin to be so bitterly cold.
so it wasn’t really even your fault.
in reality, you were dressing this way on purpose.
okay maybe you were dressed like this because you loved the attention.
the peering looks he gave you anytime you walked by, the snarky comments that left his perfect mouth.
who were you to blame? look at that man.
“feelin’ clingy tonight, huh?” he taunted, laughing in your face at the way you were holding onto him and gawking.
“me—? clingy? y’r funny, washington…” all you could do was stutter and stumble on your words.
he made you nervous and you were so intoxicated you could barely think before speaking.
holding him like this made you imagine all the possibilities. all the things you could be doing to each other right now.
and it almost felt like he was thinking the same, like you were always riding on the same wavelength.
you know something else you could ride on.
it was stupid to imagine but there’s always been a tension between you two, so thick and palpable that it left you knees-weak every time he flirted with you.
“let’s just cut the bullshit. c’mon.” before you could even process that he was talking to you, a rough set of calluses were wrapped around your forearm, tugging you somewhere in the lodge that you couldn’t quite comprehend.
the second you heard a door close behind you two, you realized you were in the master bedroom,
only knowing this due to the sudden change of temperature in the room compared to the living room.
“wha- aren’t they gonna n— notice that we’re gone?” you were confused, but you trusted him.
despite the evident look of hunger and lust in his eyes. you trusted yourself in his hands.
“i don’t care. i just needed to get you alone.” his mouth made its way to your ear, slowly, as his warm breath came to touch with your skin,
your body froze up at the sudden attention, making you feel warm. “y/n. almost years i’ve been fantasizing about you, ever since we met,” he paused and cautiously reached for your hips.
his hands were warm and you felt safe, once you processed his words you became putty in them.
“huh?”
was all you could mutter out, keeping yourself in place by grabbing onto his triceps, looking up at him through your full and wispy eyelashes.
“i’m sayin’ i wanna fuck you, pornstar. your skin is so soft and warm. i wanna know,” he paused to straighten himself up and look at you.
“i wanna know what it feels like inside that pussy of yours.”
drunk, he was drunk this had to be the drinks talking. there was no way this was real.
even if he was intoxicated, that didn’t stop his words from going straight in between your legs. arousal pooling onto your lacy panties.
could’ve sworn your eyes started to roll back at the dirty talk, he was so good at it too.
“y’don’t mean that—“ he quickly cut you off, pulling you in nice and personal and grabbing at the plush skin that was covered by tight denim. “i do. with every fiber in me, i swear i do.”
the physical attention was overwhelming, and the verbal one was even more intense. you didn’t know what else to do but to give in to something you’ve been praying for for so long.
you couldn’t even suck in a breath before he was crashing his lips onto yours.
it was a kiss that made you dizzy, you melted into it though, wrapping yourself onto him.
he led you backwards, kissing you still while he was walking, pressing your back against whatever wall was close; stabilizing you with his knee between your legs.
you were holding onto the hair on the back of his head for dear life, loving the hot and messy kiss so much that it turned you on.
all the sexual frustration of not getting any in almost a year turned you into some horn dog.
your head was spinning, you could barely make out a thought. josh’s hand began to unzip your jacket, sliding it off your body while his lips started roaming down your neck.
“i ca— can’t take it,” a whine slipped out of your lips, head turned to face away from him to hide away your embarrassment.
this didn’t stop him though, you felt him smile against your skin and only itch on more.
rutting your hips for you against his clothed leg while he started sucking ravishingly against your neck, josh himself could barely keep himself from grinning at how much he’s won.
josh was the type for messy and quick sex. but when he thinks of having it with you, he wants it hard and slow.
painfully slow. so he can make you take in everything, make you feel everything all at once.
his fingers started sliding off the straps of your tight shirt, lips starting to make contact with the plush skin of your breasts.
“so fuckin’ sexy. just like i imagined. you g’nna let me give it to you? hm?” he was teasing, words muffled by the way he had his lips wrapped around your nipple.
“god i can’t wait to fill you up. gonna tell chris how good this pussy is.” josh snickered, grinning at the mess he was making of you.
and he hadn’t even fucked you yet.
he brought himself up to bite on your ear, hands teasing your breasts as your hips (which had minds of their own) kept grinding on his knee, the friction making your brain go into mush.
your mind was completely blown, blank and empty.
fingers were digging and wrinkling up his flannel as your mouth was agape.
you were all hot and bothered, needing and yearning for more.
if you felt this good only from foreplay, imagine how good being so full of his dick was gonna be.
you couldn’t wait.
you were letting out noises you didn’t even know you could make,
and he was barely getting started.

“Liberalism always finds itself beleaguered at a moment of radical polarization,” journalist and historian James Traub writes in his deft and thoughtful biography of Hubert Humphrey to be published next month. While the right wing has organized around the destruction of liberalism and the far left denounces liberals as gutless sellouts, Traub argues that studying the life of Humphrey—the late mayor of Minneapolis, senator, and vice president—is instructive, cautionary, and inspiring. His thesis is correct on all three counts. Despite the powerful position of liberals in government, including President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, liberalism has descended to a cultural nadir. Unpopular and misunderstood among the authoritarian right and socialist left, liberals must defend themselves against the self-contradictory accusations that they are intent on “destroying America,” in the words of Donald Trump and his right-wing media acolytes and that they are cowardly guardians of the status quo who, to quote independent presidential candidate Cornel West, offer nothing but “self-righteousness against Donald Trump.”

In 2008, so many people thought that Obama’s election would usher us into a post-racial America. It was laughable then, and it is even more laughable now. My view is that racism is still the most intractable issue in this country. There are so many issues that one can put on the list of intractability—climate change and poverty. It seems America no longer has the will, even if we have the skill to do the hard things. Wrestling with climate change is hard. Wrestling with poverty and economic immobility is hard. Wrestling with the history and persistence of racism in this country is incredibly hard.

Don't risk a rerun of the 2000 election.
In the first presidential election of the 21st century many deluded progressives voted for Green Party candidate Ralph Nader.
Their foolishness gave us eight years of George W. Bush who plagued the country with two recessions (including the Great Recession) and two wars (one totally unnecessary and one which could have been avoided if he heeded an intelligence brief 5 weeks before 9/11).
Oh yeah, Dubya also appointed one conservative and one batshit crazy reactionary to the US Supreme Court. Roberts and Alito are still there.
Paul Waldman of the Washington Post offers some thoughts.
Why leftists should work their hearts out for Biden in 2024
Ask a Democrat with a long memory what the numbers 97,488 and 537 represent, and their face will twist into a grimace. The first is the number of votes Ralph Nader received in Florida in 2000 as the nominee of the Green Party; the second is the margin by which George W. Bush was eventually certified the winner of the state, handing him the White House. Now, with President Biden gearing up for reelection, talk of a spoiler candidate from the left is again in the air. That’s unfortunate, because here’s the truth: The past 2½ years under Biden have been a triumph for progressivism, even if it’s not in most people’s interest to admit it. This was not what most people expected from Biden, who ran as a relative moderate in the 2020 Democratic primary. His nomination was a victory for pragmatism with its eyes directed toward the center. But today, no one can honestly deny that Biden is the most progressive president since at least Lyndon B. Johnson. His judicial appointments are more diverse than those of any of his predecessors. He has directed more resources to combating climate change than any other president. Notwithstanding the opposition from the Supreme Court, his administration has moved aggressively to forgive and restructure student loans.
Three years ago the economy was in horrible shape because of Trump's mishandling of the pandemic. Now unemployment is steadily below 4%, job creation continues to exceed expectations, and wages are rising as unions gain strength. The post-pandemic, post-Afghan War inflation rate has receded to near normal levels; people in the 1970s would have sold their souls for a 3.2% (and dropping) inflation rate. And many of the effects of "Bidenomics" have yet to kick in.
And in a story that is criminally underappreciated, his administration’s policy reaction to the covid-induced recession of 2020 was revolutionary in precisely the ways any good leftist should favor. It embraced massive government intervention to stave off the worst economic impacts, including handing millions of families monthly checks (by expanding the child tax credit), giving all kids in public schools free meals, boosting unemployment insurance and extending health coverage to millions.
It worked. While inflation rose (as it did worldwide), the economy’s recovery has been blisteringly fast. It took more than six years for employment rates to return to what they were before the Great Recession hit in 2008, but we surpassed January 2020 jobs levels by the spring of 2022 — and have kept adding jobs ever since. To the idealistic leftist, that might feel like both old news and a partial victory at best. What about everything supporters of Bernie Sanders have found so thrilling about the Vermont senator’s vision of the future, from universal health care to free college? It’s true Biden was never going to deliver that, but to be honest, neither would Sanders had he been elected president. And that brings me to the heart of how people on the left ought to think about Biden and his reelection.
Biden has gotten things done. The US economy is doing better than those of almost every other advanced industrialized country.
Our rivals China and Russia are both worse off than they were three years ago. And NATO is not just united, it's growing.
Sadly, we still need to deal with a far right MAGA cult at home who would wreck the country just to get its own way.
Biden may be elderly and unexciting, but that is one of the reasons he won in 2020. Many people just wanted an end to the daily drama of Trump's capricious and incompetent rule by tweet. And a good portion of those people live in places that count greatly in elections – suburbs and exurbs.
Superhero films seem to be slipping in popularity. Hopefully that's a sign that voters are less likely to embrace self-appointed political messiahs to save them from themselves.
Good governance is a steady process – not a collection of magic tricks. Experienced and competent individuals who are not too far removed from the lives of the people they represent are the best people to have in government.
Paul Waldman concludes his column speaking from the heart as a liberal...
I’ve been in and around politics for many years, and even among liberals, I’ve almost always been one of the most liberal people in the room. Yet only since Biden’s election have I realized that I will probably never see a president as liberal as I’d like. It’s not an easy idea to make peace with. But it suggests a different way of thinking about elections — as one necessary step in a long, difficult process. The further you are to the left, the more important Biden’s reelection ought to be to you. It might require emotional (and policy) compromise, but for now, it’s also the most important tool you have to achieve progressive ends.
Exactly. Rightwingers take the long view. It took them 49 years but they eventually got Roe v. Wade overturned. To succeed, we need to look upon politics as an extended marathon rather as one short sprint.
Republicans may currently be bickering, but they will most likely unite behind whichever anti-abortion extremist they nominate.
It's necessary to get the word out now that the only way to defeat climate-denying, abortion-restricting, assault weapon-loving, race-baiting, homophobic Republicans is to vote Democratic.

In Paris during the filming of “Monkees In Paris,” June 1967. Photo published by The Monkees Monthly.
“Tork was pegged to play ‘the offbeat one,’ he said. ‘But I enjoyed it. I preferred hiding behind a character as opposed to playing myself.’” - The Record, January 19, 2001 “[Tork is] a confessed ‘metaphysical’ sort, with a penchant for heavy reading and a habit of pausing to sculpt his sentences perfectly. ‘But nobody really cares about that,’ he laughs. ‘So, professionally, what gets shown is my other side: “Hey, weren’t you the dummy in the band? Let’s see the dummy!”’ - The Morning News, May 29, 1986 “‘They had two regular guys and a tiny heartthrob and they needed an offbeat kind of guy,’ says Peter Tork. ‘So I brought that simpleton in, a part I had developed on the Greenwich Village scene. I enjoyed that role. I still do, sometimes.’” - Washington Post, July 27, 1986
