Ive definitely not-started multiple shows that looked interesting bc I knew they ended with a cancellation. Can you even call it a library of shows when a huge percentage are incomplete?
The article mentions Warrior Nun - was it not picked up elsewhere? I remember people being relieved, but time is soup and that mightve been years ago now?
But what’s happened now is that this has happened so often with so many shows, that Netflix has created a self-fulfilling loop with many series that probably could have gone on to become valuable catalogue additions otherwise.
The idea is that since you know that Netflix cancels so many shows after one or two seasons, ending them on cliffhangers and leaving their storylines unfinished, it’s almost not worth investing in a show until it’s already ended, and you know it’s going to have a coherent ending and finished arc.
So you hold off watching new shows, even ones you might otherwise be interested in, because you’re afraid Netflix will cancel them. Enough people do this and surprise, viewership is low! And the show ends up cancelled. The loop is closed, and reinforced, because now there’s yet another example cited, causing even more people to be cautious the next time around. And now we’ve reached a point where unless a series is some sort of record-breaking fluke megahit (Wednesday) or established super franchise (Stranger Things), a second or third season feels like not even a coinflip, but more like 10-20% shot, at best.
Netflix’s cancelation policies have informed its viewers that if you want a show you like renewed, you need to watch it immediately, you need to tell all your friends to watch it immediately, and you need to finish all episodes in a short period of time. Anything less than that will result in likely cancelation, with the problem being, of course, that this runs contrary to the entire promise of a streaming service like Netflix in the first place. The core concept of “on demand” streaming was that ability to watch what you wanted, when you wanted to. But now binging a series in its opening weekend isn’t just an option to have, it feels almost mandatory, lest the negative data reflect poorly on a show you might otherwise like.
Something has broken with this model. It’s now created a system where creators should be afraid to make a series that dares to end on a cliffhanger or save anything for future seasons, lest their story forever be left unfinished. And viewers are afraid to commit to any show that isn’t a completely aired package lest they spend 10-30 hours on something that ends up unresolved, which has happened dozens and dozens of times, creating a vast “show graveyard” within Netflix, full of landmines viewers are going to be discovering for years.
More at the link.
------
I've wondered if it's driving creators to their competitors too.

What strikes me about this scene is how comfortable they are with each other compared to their scenes in season one. That comfort establishes the passage of time and that they have grown closer to each other. Hence, the kiss does seem as something that is sort of their whole relationship rather than something shocking and intrusive. I mean, clearly it was not the first time Ava kisses Beatrice as you say.
Plus, Ava is so gentle (tender) with Beatrice when she talks about being discreet. It is different from how she tries to comfort Beatrice in Season 1 episode 8, after reading about Sister Melanie and Bea brakes down. At the time, there is a clear distance there mostly because they don’t know each other yet. Ava clearly wants to comfort Beatrice and has a crush on her probably or at least admires her very much but that has not yet become love.
Even at the walk to the tomb where they exchange bad puns, you can see them building their relationship there but it is still not close friend level yet. It is just fun. The start to something more.
But in this one where we are introduced to them in the second season, you can see the gentleness and closeness between them. The tenderness and affection Ava has for Beatrice. And the worry and concern, beyond professional concern, that Beatrice has for Ava.
That is brilliant acting by Ava and KTY. And of course directing and writing by the rest of the team as well.
jt (finally) watches warrior nun - s2 e1 (pt 1)
Slowly, slowly making my way through s2 e1 (finally!) so I think I’ll just post as I go because this is gonna take me a while. Plus it doesn’t help that it’s these avatrice scenes lol
So let’s talk about that first avatrice scene (I’ll be referencing this video clip throughout because making gifs and me don’t mix) - and wow, I did not expect that to be right at the start. They really weren’t messing around in building up avatrice for this season huh?
Anyway, three things that stuck out to me in this scene: 1) how tense Beatrice is, 2) conversely, how easily she bends to Ava, and 3) that was not the first time Ava has kissed Beatrice.
(Gonna make separate posts for each of these because oops, this got long)
First, Beatrice’s tension - I mean this both in an emotional and physical way. To start with the former: Bea scolds Ava for chatting up customers and talking about Adriel, but how did she know when she was upstairs?
As in: In order for Bea to have known this, she either has super-hearing and can hear from upstairs (or planted listening devices/spy bugs around the bar - that actually would’ve been interesting but still unlikely) or she went downstairs, witnessed the interaction - likely huffed a bit lol - then went back upstairs. And somewhere in that sequence, she asked Hans to get Ava for her.
That seems a lot, no?
It did make for a cute intro to Bea though, seeing her pop out like that and in civilian clothes, but idk, it just makes me amused at how … extra, how tense, how wary she is. Even after two months, she’s still wound up - though, perhaps if she’s aware of her feelings for Ava here, then this is her reaction to that awareness: to be more strict, more tense, more discreet.
Because I feel like to Beatrice, “discreet” is less about not attracting attention and more about being hidden. It fits how she’s functioned thus far - hiding her self behind being a sister warrior (remember what Beatrice said in s1 e8? “Pain is what made me a sister warrior” not, “Pain is what made me who I am”), hiding and hating her queerness.
So it makes sense that Beatrice would see Ava “chatting up customers” about Adriel and instead of engage Ava right there (or even be the one to ask her to talk instead of Hans), she instead chooses to hide herself away.
Huh. I just realized - hiding is Bea’s version of running away.
Okay this is kinda fascinating because all the talk about running has been about Ava, which has been deliberate and I’m looking forward to seeing that arc play out, but huh, I never thought about Beatrice running. She runs from her feelings - examples that are coming to my head are when she denies her jealousy, but we also have her physically running away from Ava when they have the balcony talk (i.e. the “I let my emotions blind me to the mission” scene).
But Ava doesn’t let her hide - Ava’s the worst at hiding, really. She’s too bright, too open, and, this is part of my second point (which I’ll make a separate post for because this is already getting long lol), that it’s Ava’s light that brings Beatrice out of the dark, that eventually gets Beatrice to bend and release that tension.
Okay, need to end this here, will be back with the other points ... sometime soon. Hopefully lol

if you want to get really mad, one of the writers for Dead Boy Detectives confirmed on twitter today that the Season 2 script had been WRITTEN AND COMPLETED when the cancellation news went out.
This is really untenable, not just as people watching these shows for entertainment, but as people who care about art and workers being treated fairly.
#netflixcancels is trending because people are so angry about several other wonderful, highly praised shows getting axed for the same reasons - especially Warrior Nun, another LGBTQ show with 100% ratings on Rotten Tomatoes and winner of several awards.
⭐️ I can only recommend, if this is important to you, streaming the hell out of Dead Boy Detectives and getting others on board, or you and everyone you know unsubscribes from Netflix. You can let em know on social media too.
There's also a petition, it's at 14k signatures, which is not nothing.
Anyway. I'm just stunned that Netflix bothers to make these shows which are positively received and artistically groundbreaking, just to destroy them after 1 season. It's unfair to everyone, not just fans, and an alarming sign for creative professions on the whole.

🌟Data update!🌟
The more visibly queer a show is, the likelier it is to be canceled. The more frequently a queer character appears, and the more recurring queer characters there are, the higher the rate of cancellation.
We have found an increase in cancellation rates for shows which meet both sets of our criteria to be defined as queer - 1 queer main character, PLUS 3 more queer characters who each appear in at least 50% of episodes.
The rate rose by an average of 7%.
Averaging across all lists, queer shows were canceled 54% of the time. Shows that met both sets of criteria for "queer" were canceled 65% of the time. Our carrd has been updated.
The data can't really get much clearer than this.
If there's another reason these shows are getting axed, then this is an extremely consistent coincidence.
Thanks in particular to GLAAD, we know that we lost a lot of queer shows and characters this year. Now with our #SaveQueerStudies data, we can track proportionality.
Our data reveals that queer shows are canceled more often than other shows, are more likely to be canceled in one season, and are at an increased risk of cancellation as their queer characters become more visible.
We know why representation matters. This has to change.
The first and best way we can start to address this is by being as loud as we can. Please spread our hashtag and carrd widely. Support our participating fandoms and check out other ways to help at actforqueerstories.carrd.co.
We can and will turn this around.
