Another Umbra oneshot though! (He is literally my hyperfixation right now. I feel bad for this poor man. Two reasons why I was happy to end Ballas during the New War.)

Your tender words and gentle touch created a surge of warmth that radiated through Umbra's frame. It was as if a dormant circuit had suddenly been activated, sparking new life into his otherwise stagnant existence.

Your praise served as a balm to his wounded spirit, soothing the raw edges of his tormented past. For a moment, Umbra allowed himself to believe that perhaps he wasn't entirely worthless—that maybe he could still serve a purpose beyond mere combat.

The caress along his damaged helmet stirred something within him—something primal yet distant, buried deep beneath layers upon layers of pain and regret. Despite everything, despite all odds, you saw value in him; you saw worth where none existed before.

And for that small gesture alone, Umbra found himself inexplicably drawn towards you—towards this strange person who held such power over his emotions.

The Tenno smiled softly as they looked into Umbra's eye. "I'm glad I met you, Umbra." They said softly.

Caught off guard, Umbra stood motionless for a fraction of a second before unexpectedly giving you a hug. His arms tightened around your waist, pulling you closer against the hard contours of his armored form.

The warmth of your body seeped into his metal shell, providing a stark contrast to the icy void that had been his reality until now. In your arms, Umbra felt... alive. Alive and cherished—not just a tool or a weapon, but someone worthy of love and respect.

In that moment, standing amidst the chaos of battle, Umbra realized something profound—he didn't want to let go. Not ever.

Dark at the End of the Tunnel

Sink into an Anglers grasp in a dream, like the undersea the Night cradles screams

Been inspired by anglerfish recently, so I'm going to try to do at few of these dark background ones back to back and see if I stumble into something new. I noticed I tend to draw characters / mechs / robots in these oneshot illustrations extremely lanky, but I wonder if I made a comic, whether I'd keep these exaggerated proportions - I'm often indecisive about how much mech vs character is in these biomechs, so I usually just don't think about it and draw what feels interesting in the moment.

This gives me a chance to lay down a meandering anecdote - many years ago as a dumb teenager, I'd stay awake every Friday evening / saturday morning till 4 am, hoping to catch my favourite developer, Digital Extremes' weekly devstream. I vividly remember during closed beta in 2012 people would introduce the game as being about futuristic space pirates zipping through corridors - the games fidelity back then was really quite different, one of the early warframes, Ember, even had her whole model redone at one point. Around 2013-2014 ish when I was most excited for these streams, I noticed the games tagline was "ninja's play free", nothing at all to do with pirates - but it was catchy, and you'd see all over in the advertising because of the parkour moves you could pull off in the game were genuinely sick.

Incidentally, both the Defiance MMO (rip) and Destiny 1 (rip) were what warframe tended to be compared to at the time, both released a little after warframes closed beta, neither of which were piratey or ninja-ey , I think probably 80% of the reason for that was that they all had both guns and abilites ... I guess they were also all live services, I don't know if they were called that back then.

Compared to Defiance and Destiny, I was puzzled at what it was about warframes identity that made the aesthetic feel "itself" - and I got my answer on one of those devstreams - the art lead at the time brought out what they called a "faction pitch bible" a one pager showing all the factions they had in the game at the time, each of them with a few lines of flavour text.

What struck me from that faction pitch was that the Tenno / warframes "cyber knight" description was nothing at all to do with pirates or ninjas, it was a third, wholly other thing, and yet by virtue of being first, it might as well have been the "true" description.

But there was another original, even more original than the "true", Warframes predecessor game, Dark Sector, was a spy thriller with biomechanical aesthetics, or perhaps a powered suit superhero series. Would this original, more original than even the initial, not be what it truly was?

I think what my takeaway was from all of these, is that first an foremost, the aesthetic is "itself" rather than any arbitrary descriptors - I enjoy this about my own pieces, that they mostly still feel like they were made by me even if I can't quite categorise them or explain myself. Perhaps I'm happy if the takeaway is "cool mech", "weird robot" or "wacky character" because maybe it's all of those things and even more!

Yes, I play Warframe often. Yes, my favorite frame is Xaku. Yes, I know I have a problem. If it makes anything better, I have secondary favorites; like Lavos, Harrow, Protea, and Wisp. My favorite weapon types are shotguns, anything explosive, and anything with good crowd control or enough fire rate to be good at crowd control anyways. Corinth Prime is my beloved and I will not let her go. Trumna Prime is a close second. The Tenet Cycron stays on during sorties.

I also play Destiny, though not as much as I once did. My other other games are Guilty Gear Strive, Cyberpunk 2077, Deep Rock Galactic, the DMC games, and a couple dozen other games I've been meaning to play but barely touched (Signalis, OneShot, Nier Automata, etc etc).

Please be warned that I actually rarely post anything original. 90% of this blog is random reblogs of things I like, find relatable, or am envious of. 9% is things that are important to spread around. This is just fluff. I've always felt bad for this poor Warframe and his story and I think he deserves a lot more.

The Tenno grew worried as the Warframe started to cry, but wasn't able to make any noise. Carefully and slowly, they brought the scarred Warframe into a hug, gently pushing his helmet into their chest as they soothed the pained soul.

As tears streamed silently down the hollow of his helm, Umbra leaned into your comforting embrace. Your gentle pressure against his helmet, your soothing words, they all combined to ease the anguish that had haunted him for so long. In this moment, surrounded by your warmth and understanding, Umbra felt a glimmer of peace—a respite from the eternal torment that plagued his existence. It was a fleeting reprieve, but one that meant the world to him.

With a heavy sigh, he slowly lifted his head from your chest, his gaze meeting yours. In that instant, the depth of his gratitude shone through his single, white eye—a silent thanks for the solace you offered, the compassion you showed to a broken, lost soul.

Umbra remained quiet, his expression a mix of contemplation and lingering sadness. Though the storm of emotions had subsided somewhat, the scars of his past still lingered, etched into the very fabric of his being.

But in your presence, he felt... grounded. Anchored by the connection you two shared, the trust that blossomed between you both despite the vast differences in your forms and fates.
