Bought some books today, mass-market paperbacks by Barry N. Malzberg and Walter M. Miller, Jr. I don’t need them and honestly my eyes are so bad by now that I probably couldn’t make it through one—I’ll have to find them online probably. But they were so cheap and such a cheap indulgence and so lovely as objects. I’ve only ever come across two Walter M. Miller Jr. books: A Canticle for Leibowitz,…

At one of the local secondhand bookstores near me, there was a collection of odd books that had decoupaged covers and spines. I asked what the story was and was told the guy who previously owned these books sold off his collection before moving countries. Some of the books had damage, so he was creative in redesigning the covers. Not only was this a one of a kind find, it’s quite a fascinating read!
Got inspired to make a custom bookmark to match my custom sci-fi post-apocalyptic Catholic monk novel.

A Canticle for Leibowitz by Walter M. Miller Jr. - Book Review
This sprawling, intricate post-apocalyptic novel blends religious faith with science fiction, and envisions a potential course for human civilisation that’s both bleak and hopeful – and surprisingly humorous. It’s a wonderfully written book deserving of its classic status. Continue reading A Canticle for Leibowitz by Walter M. Miller Jr. – Book Review

My review of the Fallout show is that the fans and everyone at Bethesda need to read A Canticle for Leibowitz and re-apply its themes to this thing they all love - Jonathan Nolan kind of gets it, but I'm pretty sure Emil Pagliarulo doesn't

tagged by @epersonae and @latriviata both (hiiii 👋) to share 6 books I want to read in 2025!
If I had done this when I was tagged instead of procrastinating it in a tab I would have included The Secret Lives of Country Gentlemen and A Nobleman's Guide to Seducing a Scoundrel both by K. J. Charles, but instead I left it in a tab and uh read those books already so I guess they don't count.
In trying to determine this list (and in trying to not just cheat and list the next 4 book club picks) I'm reviewing my "tbr" note and uh guys uh do you know there are so many books?? there are so many books. My dad just recommended 2 books to me. That's 2 more books on my tbr! there are so! many! books!
So I think this will actually pick my next 6 books to read and I will try to look through my tbr and think about who recommended what and how long they've been languishing on the list.
A Canticle for Leibowitz by Walter M. Miller Jr.
I know next to nothing about this book but I greatly respect the opinion of the person who recommended it. In searching for cover art I saw that it is set in a post-apocalyptic type setting, which, I love and also was avoiding for a while because of waves at 2016/Trump and also 2020 but maybe I can pound this out before he takes office again 😐
2. The Last Girl Scout by Natalie Ironside
Again - I know next to nothing about this book, but it's also post-apocalyptic so I feel like it will be an interesting pair. Again, we shall see if I can stomach it 😅
3. Silver in the Wood by Emily Tesh
This is a title that's been on my list for YEARS.
4. Drowned Country by Emily Tesh
and apparently it is part of a duology. This is all I know.
5. The New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander
I had a burst of anti-racism reading in 2020 but there are plenty of books left on my list from that time.
6. The Color of Law by Richard Rothstein
Including this as well. Kristian Nairn's memoir notwithstanding, I haven't read any nonfiction books in a hot minute (from my records, it appears that previous to that was another memoir in January of 2023) so I think I'm due.

Seeing your post about post-apocalyptic accents and dialects, I think you'd like A Canticle for Leibowitz, if only because for part 2 and 3, and the 2nd book, there's at least three or four major languages in play in what was America. Southwest, Alleghenian, English, which is now to them what Latin is to us, and Latin itself, which has split into two sub-languages, Vulgate and Modern, both of which are apparently different enough it's more like a very early split between today's Romance languages; technically the same language but different enough that someone who speaks one might not be able to speak the other
What a coincidence, I just put A Canticle for Leibowitz on my book club's reading suggestions list 😊
