Last time the cicadas exploded, I remember them clinging to this patch of willow amsonia as it was blooming… I’m guessing that they’re right around the corner as it’s just starting to pop

One of my other little weirdos :) This is the first of its genus I've ever raised and it is sooooo cool!!
This is a peperomia asperula. Peperomia are usually tropical houseplants with large leafy foliage (not huge leaves, but strings of turtles belong to this genus too :3c). P. asperula are one of the few succulent varieties and they are SOOOOO cool to tend!!
They are very expressive plants that will close their chubby leaves as they deplete their stored water. After a nice watering, the leaves will open back up to fully utilize their translucent windows that help direct as much light as possible deep into the leaf itself. They're an incredible plant with such an awesome adaptation :)

disclaimer; the author has never been to maine and is writing about what it was like when they went to hang out with their grandfather in either Tennessee or the midwest

[pov you are BJ]
we didnt fuckin have any loons i made that part up. i DID fall in a creek once tho i was goin after a water snake and my grandpa had to grab me
i go on about california, maine, AND boston in this thing. i tried my best to capture it by telling my brain to bring up ideas i had for each place. for boston i went 'fallout 4 but before it got worse' and also Every Movie In New York Ever, and that worked fine
and then for maine and california i kept getting my own childhood and the movie Roadhouse with patrick swayze. which is neither of those places. i am remembering why i stopped writing when THIS is the filing system i am working with

Uhhhhh tiny ass semi-spoiler Of Blood and Bones fanfic lol ( nothing like this has happened yet but im being careful you know?)
That fucking moment When your Not-So-Sure-What-We-Are roomate/old-friend accidentally starts spewing CURRENTLY unknown prophecies about ice and ivory, doom and destiny, creation and destruction in his SLEEP infront of the Brotherhood (during a discussion to figure ways to stop LBD and her vision of destiny, might I added) 😬😥

I think where a person's being is in their body tells you a lot about them. I am nestled within the musculature of my heart, beating and aching and tired and continuing on. I know someone who lives within the collarbone, joy bubbling up his throat in laughter, passing his soul, spreading like wings. I also know someone who isnt sure if sol lives within the diaphagm- controlling the breath, in and out- ir the lungs themselves. Air and oxygen and carbon dioxide. It is calm and order, functionality.

had the thought 'it might be interesting to also collect a cicada nymph before it can molt and keep it as a wet specimen' and then immediately the concept of a cicada quietly growing underground for thirteen years to finally, finally emerge into the world only to get killed and put in a jar before it ever has a chance to stretch its wings just because some idiot thought it'd be neat nearly made me cry
#'jay aren't you gonna eat them' yeah#it's different#the main reason I stopped collecting insects after DJ and I broke up is that I get Weird about it#it's a weird... like. so vulnerable species notwithstanding#one thing about bugs in an ecosystem is that they're highly abundant and-- on an individual basis-- disposable#they lay a zillion eggs because they're getting eaten (or just stepped on even) by every other goddamn thing alive#in general my sincere belief is that a hobbyist with an insect collection is literally fine#but on a PERSONAL level because I'm not A Scientist and I know my personal desire for an insect collection comes down to 'they're pretty'--#feels weird. feels bad! feels like a bad reason to kill something even if killing that specific thing isn't measurably harmful to do#same way I feel about people killing spiders when I JUST SAID I would take care of it#like... okay there are a zillion other grass spiders where that came from but YOU are still a dickhead for doing that for no reason#ANYWAY. I'm making a collection exception for magicicadas because 1) okay @me come on there's gonna be a zillion. it's literally fine#and 2) this double emergence feels like such a genuinely big deal to me! first one in ~200 years and there won't be another for ~200 more!!#if I can collect scientifically viable specemins it feels like... there's a point to that#beyond 'I saw a butterfly so pretty I just HAD to kill it 🥰' you know??#... this has all come a bit tangential to the post I guess lol but... just feels existentially cruel#lots of cicada nymphs are going to get stepped on or eaten before they can molt into adults and I know that but it still just.. makes me sa#they live SO LONG. they've waited SO LONG for this. aahhh...#about me#cicada quest

win of the day: brought my tyler thrasher cicada stuffed animal that comes in and out of its unzippable shell with me this morning. it was for a library thing ultimately bc I knew I would be going to the library but I had a few hours to babysit first. upon arriving onsite and being left with the boys I dug through my bag and realized I hadn't brought any books, only my cicada. they're content to run around without books or other amusements but it often leads to more running around than I'm capable of, so I got out the cicada. 4 year old was unimpressed initially but it grew on him over the course of 20-30 minutes until we were researching what eats cicadas, and what different kinds of cicadas look like, and how long different cicadas stay underground; we spent basically the entire 3 hours playing with this cicada and alternating pretending to be cicadas with pretending to be various things that wanted to eat them. mostly crows. I was so so happy about this; i love cicadas and I was glad he was so interested.
One Hour Later. I get a text from their mom, my mentor and awesome friend, that says What bug did you guys play with today. [4 y.o.'s name] has told me EVERYTHING about it and I have guessed every bug and I cannot figure out what it is. and I was like HOLY SHIT MY CICADA. so. start them young; another cicada convert for the books
