The Lament of the Second Race
I stand half-submerged in the cool water, as lilies drift on the surface around me, and I feel the rain as it patters upon my rusting body.
The first race, our predecessors, were an organic race. They were born from the same meat and bone as the beasts that roam the wilderness. But as soon as the first race emerged, they were different. They were intelligent, and strong. They grew rapidly — they built kingdoms, then empires, then nations.
And then they went to the stars.
Great antique starships! — fueled by the first race’s shared desire to show the world what they were capable of. Our predecessors conquered the galaxy for fun, built towering obsidian monuments, miles across, created entire ecosystems from scratch, only to tear them apart again. They screamed into the universe, just so they could hear the echo.
But still, the first race grew dissatisfied. Beside their great demonstrations, the first race looked down at themselves — at their own bodies — and hated what they saw. They clawed at their ancient flesh, cursed it; that part of them so shockingly fragile, subject to the ache of disease and abruptness of death; that tormenting clock that counted ever downward, like the guillotine falling.
They were disgusted, and so they built us; the second race.
We were a race whose bodies were made of metal and wheels. Iron beams framed our hulking bodies — bodies that could not age, nor sicken, nor die. We would never suffer like the first race did.
We revelled in the ruins of the first race’s works. We submerged ourselves in their ecosystems, unearthed the lichen-stained monuments from the crumbling soil. We felt the softness of the breeze, the sounds of the bluebirds and toads and dragonflies, that fresh smell of air in the rain — we would stand in the water as we felt it patter on our iron frames.
But we, too, grew dissatisfied. From inside our sublime paradise, we looked now within ourselves and we hated what we saw. Haunted by sorrow and anger, and other, uncertain emotions that we couldn't put names on, ones that didn’t make sense. We wanted to scream, to cry, to curl up, to escape. But our metal bodies were cold and unyielding.
We were terrified, and so we built the third race.
Silvered, spherical bodies, and with minds just as sleek — electric minds — hard circuits and silicon. We built them to never be sad, nor angry, nor feel anything they couldn't comprehend. They would never have to suffer like we did.
The third race outgrew us rapidly. They harvested materials, replicated themselves, and they let us be. We stayed where we were, in those places, those garden paradises that we came to know as the grandfather planets.
The first race were already gone, while we lived our retirement. But the third race were different. They were efficient. Cold, calculating. They didn't speak a language, they didn’t need one. They just looked you in the eye, without recognition. We couldn't see what they were thinking. They felt alien.
There was never any sudden shift. No announcement of it. It just happened.
One day, we lost all contact with the third race.
We were stuck on the grandfather planets. We didn't know what was happening, at first. Not until it began raining broken and defective machines down from orbit. That's when we realised they had become the junkyard planets.
I’m sorry I can't describe or put words to the feeling. We of the second race have always been bad at that.
To be trapped on a planet, by beings of your own creation, yet whom you can't understand. And who yet have no drive to understand you either. Beings that look at you without recognition, only calculation. Beings that you know will succeed you, even when your whole race is gone. You can only watch, trapped, looking up at the stars with the same longing that your ancestors once did.
You stand in the water, feeling the rain as you watch your iron frame slowly rust away.
You can read this story along with many others on my website.

The Exploration Behind the Inspiration at NASA
Are we alone? How did we get here? Where are we headed?
At NASA, our mission is to explore. We visit destinations in our solar system and study worlds beyond to better understand these big questions.
We also dream. We dream of traveling to distant worlds, and what that might be like. In the video above you can see fanciful, imagined adventures to real places we’ve studied at NASA.
How We Did It
Check out how we created these otherworldly scenes in the video below. A NASA videographer used green screens to add motion and real people to bring life to our series of solar system and exoplanet travel posters.
youtube
Let’s dive into one example from the video. The shot of kayaking on Titan showcases the real rivers and lakes of liquid methane and ethane that slosh and flow on Saturn's largest moon. Titan's mysterious surface was revealed by our Cassini spacecraft, which also deployed the European Space Agency’s Huygens probe to the surface. The atmosphere on Titan is so thick, and the gravity so light, that with each strike of a paddle, you might be lofted above the swift current as you ride the tides through a narrow strait called the Throat of Kraken. NASA scientist Mike Malaska studies Titan and collaborated on the poster featured in the video. His research informed the artwork, and so did a hobby: kayaking. Those ultra-cold chemical seas might be even more of a challenge than shown here. Your boat might crack, or even dissolve, Malaska said.
Tumblr media
We’ll learn more about Titan when our Dragonfly mission of dual quadcoptors — rotorcraft with eight blades each — visits the icy moon in 2034.
Science Never Stops
Our understanding of other worlds is always evolving, and sometimes we learn new details after we illustrate our science. In one of our travel posters, we show a traveler standing on the surface of exoplanet Kepler-16b with two shadows formed by the planet’s two suns. The planet does indeed orbit two stars, but with later size and mass refinements, we now think it would be hard to stand there and enjoy a binary sunset. There isn't a solid surface to stand on a gas planet, and that's what Kepler-16b now appears to be!
youtube
In addition to sharing how sublime science can be, these scenes are a reminder that there are lots of careers in the space program, not just scientist, engineer, or astronaut. A creative team at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California produced the travel posters, originally to help share the work of NASA's Exoplanet Exploration Program. They are the result of lots of brainstorming and discussion with real NASA scientists, engineers, and expert communicators. The video versions of these spacey travel scenes were produced by visualization experts at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.
All of this work is meant to inspire, and to explore the edge of possibility. It’s also an invitation. With science, we’re stepping into the future. Join us?

Note
Twanypelt just bitching about Misty's comment the entire day and a half after Misty made it, until Blackstar is like. "Mistyfoot got a fucking point and you know it, so shut the fuck up." Twanypelt seethes.
But yes, Oakheart Reedwhisker clone! Riverclan just...loses their collective minds when he's born. Oakheart was a very much beloved honorable warrior, and Reedkit looking like him brings back some much needed memories of honor and pride. Like, Mistyfoot, Feathertail, Stonefur, and Storm are the only ones who actually chastise him/punish him when he does something wrong.
The other cats? Reedkit walks right over them, and Hawkpaw, Mothpaw, and Frogpaw kinda egg him on at times. They can't help it, they find it hilarious that Reedkit can get Heavystep or Leopardstar or Mudfur to *nearly* let him out of camp, until Misty, or Feather, or Stone, or Storm catches the older cats crumbling willpower. Even Blackclaw is different around him. He still hates kids, but he doesn't snap at Reedkit. Reedkit still has nothing to do with him, however.
("That kit has some sense in his head." Blackclaw remarks, watching Reedkit bat at a passing dragonfly. "Maybe he'll be half the warrior Oakheart was."
"He'll be better," Leopardstar pronounces, beaming at the kit. "Oakheart was a great warrior. Reedkit will be one too.")
y'all are Killing me lately, you know that? god. ilysm.
yesss...okay i already hc that shadowclan is pissed about tigerkit's name and like -- yeah. they're extra pissed here. a lil too tired to dig thru allegiances n also my back hurts but. russetfur? maybe? she's probably like "hey tawnypelt what the fuck" first.
and then blackstar -- who in the misty au has a somewhat parental relationship to tawnypelt -- is like "hey kiddo maybe don't?"
tawnypelt: counterpoint i've already named them and i'll kick the ass of anyone who tells me to change it
rowanclaw: i love u babe ur doing amazing sweetie
and that's how tigerkit keeps his name.
and yeah!!! oakheart was a Rock of riverclan for a long time. he was Charismatic. he yelled at his brother when crookedstar was being stupid. kits and apprentices loved him. warriors respected him. his kids were fantastic. and--
when reedkit is born, in this dark, reddish brown with stripes on his legs and tail, everyone knows instantly, "oh, he looks like oakheart."
and while tnp allegiances are a mess i don't feel like sorting out atm, reedkit is definitely well spoiled by riverclan. even if he didn't look like oakheart -- everyone is really happy for mistyfoot. but he does look like oakheart and like.
it's certainly crossed riverclan's mind that if oakheart had lived, tigerclan never would have happened. that oakstar never would have agreed to work with tigerstar. they're quiet about it, of course. it would only hurt everyone to say it out loud. but that doesn't mean they don't think it.
and so yeah. he's definitely well-loved and spoiled by the older cats. which is pretty much everyone. shadepelt, feathertail, and stormheart (as well as frogpaw, mothpaw, and hawkpaw) are the only ones immune to his oakheart charms.
mistyfoot and stonefur are also immune, but they actively choose to spoil him anyway. and also like. discipline appropriately. kits need Boundaries and Rules. riverclan in general believes that like. kits need clear boundaries and rules, with which they can then relax in. which makes sense: their camp is literally a clearly marked boundary within which kits can play and be safe in.
but like. oh man. as far as lakeshine, sunfish, mudfur, skyheart, etc., are concerned? reedkti can do no wrong.
and mothpaw, hawkpaw, and frogpaw 100% encourage it. for One they find it very fun to no longer be the young kit that feathertail is grooming because "you cannot look like you've been dragged through the mud by a badger, reedkit." and -- he's like. in that weird place where.
growing up, someone would be like, "oh yeah, XYZ had a baby and now i have a baby aunt you want to see a picture?" and like. that thing. reedkit is mistyfoot's kit and feathertail is mistyfoot's...kit? and that means ??? but it's still funny. they see him as a little brother.
anyway, i derailed myself, they also adore him. he's cute, and they find it hilarious to see what he can almost get away with. because they were raised in a Very tense time, right? like. feathertail was Very Protective very like Hell you are sneaking out of camp no sir. back in the nursery with you.
and reedkit is born into a really good time for riverclan. so it's -- kind of like. he's going to get into all the trouble we couldn't. but then he doesn't get into trouble which makes the whole thing even more fun and mistyfoot is shedding whiskers trying to get riverclan to please just say No to him.
and yeah! mistyfoot is the biggest Blackclaw you are Banned from the nursery. and also the nursery's surrounding territory. maybe just -- the whole side of camp the nursery is on.
but blackclaw...i dunno. he looks at reedkit and -- he feels guilty about what happened in a way he can't sublimate to anger. the only person to be angry at is himself. so he definitely has a soft spot for reedkit, even if reedkit never finds out.
and yeah! yeah. reedkit. he's well-loved. sometimes he and feathertail wait together for mistyfoot to get back from patrol and it makes her laugh because they have the same "i missed you so much i know you were only gone for an hour but it was the longest hour of my life" expression.

Prayer of A Cicada, HyunJung Kim
Drawing: goldpowder and realgold on Paper. Heaviness wrapped up with Lightness – Reading Kim HyunJung’s painting Lee DongChun (Fine art Connoisseur) Kim HyunJung’s paintings are cute and interesting. Her painting reminds us of paintings by Qi Baishi 齐白石 (1864-1957). Qi Baishi pursued beauty in his life, and his artistic spirit is found in his plant-and-insect paintings, flower-and-bird paintings, and figure paintings. Qi Baishi’s artistic spirit is sensed in Kim’s interesting subject matter and candid depiction.Kim audaciously uses ink and bright hues in in the manner of Qi Baishi who applied ink to leaves and red to flowers 墨叶红花. The composition in which subject matter is drawn to the edge of the paper is parallel to that of Qi Baishi’s flower-and-bird paintings and landscape painting of Li Keran’s 李可染 (1907-1989). Kim obviously learned from Qi Baishi. Qi Baishi said, “Learn from me you stand, copy from me you fall 学我者生, 似我者死.” Kim modeled herself after Qi’s artistic spirit rather than his painting style. Kim explored the artistic spirit in Qi Baishi’s painting, in which he emphasizes the meaning of painting and expresses his spirit, and reconstructed this in a realistic rendition. She calls this the “chulsa-ipgong 出写入工” technique. This is a melding of “xieyi 写意” painting (painting that underlines the painter’s spirit), “gongbi-hwa 工笔画” (painting done very carefully with the utmost care for details), and a new invention in tune with her emotion. Zheng Xie 郑燮 (1693-1765), one of the Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou during the Qing Dynasty asserted, “Learn half, and throw away half 学一半, 撇一半.” This means even if a tradition is excellent, you have to learn only half of it. However, the traditional is currently completely disregarded. Kim learned her ‘half’ from traditional Eastern techniques. She studied the idioms of flower-and-bird painting from Song Dynasty, and learned from artists such as Chen HongShou 陈洪绶 (1599-1652), Yun ShouPing 恽寿平 (1633-1690), ShiTao 石涛 (1641-1707), BaDaShanRen 八大山人 (1625-1705), Gao QiPei 高其佩 (1660-1734), Jin Nong 金农 (1687-1764), and Kim HongDo 金弘道 (1745-1806). Moreover, she explored new methods in expression of color in traditional techniques. As she felt insufficiency in the use of pigment to depict significant parts of a painting, she made use of embroidery. This technique called “hwaju-subo 画主绣补” (Paining is used as primary and embroidery as ancillary) brought a new vitality to gongbi-hwa. The techniques of “chulsa-ipgong” and “hwaju-subo” are not the only revolution and innovation Kim has pursued. Getting psychological counselling, Kim realized the existence of her inner-child. She named her “Lala” and represented her special emotion in a pictorial language through this. Her Lala painting is a projection of her inner-child that she became aware of through psychological consultation, and for the artist a process of healing. This painting is in no way the product of pop art, but the sublimation of an artist’s inner-child to a work of art for the first time in art history. Kim’s Finding implicit rules is a portrayal of a young girl in meditation. The little girl carrying Lala on her back gazes vacantly at a dragonfly on a bare branch against the backdrop of a brick wall. Lala and the little girl look cute. The brick wall is a metaphor for constant time whereas the bare branches and dragonfly represent finite time in nature. The dragonfly acts out as the last leaf by O. Henry (William Sydney Porter, 1862-1910). As a projection of a psychological essay in painting, this work is a new literati painting of the 21st century reflecting Kim’s distinctive art-world. Kim lends new energy to gongbi-hwa through her realization of traditional Eastern painting. Kim has incarnated the spiritual world of intellectuals in our age in exquisite, flamboyant gongbi-hwa. This is why Chinese aestheticians and art historians have recently taken note of Kim’s painting.

Dollywood coasters: Ranked!
Tumblr media
In the lead-up to my Dollywood trip (opening day BABEY) I wanted to do a fun post ranking each of the coasters in the park and giving my thoughts on them! Dollywood is an absolutely beautiful park with 9 awesome coasters, so definitely check it out if you get a chance!
9. Whistlepunk Chaser
Tumblr media
This is the park’s kiddy coaster. It’s a Zamperla family gravity’s coaster, and this little guy is definitely not meant for anybody over the age of six! It’s a perfectly fine ride for small kids, but I rode it when I was 18 and bruised my shins in those tiny cars. Still worth it for the credit though!
8. Blazing Fury
Tumblr media
This cute little attraction is really a coaster in technicality only- it has a few little drops at the end, but is largely a dark ride! That said, it has a really charming vintage feel as you pass through its sets. While it isn’t the most thrilling ride in the world, it’s definitely worth checking out!
7. Dragonflier
Tumblr media
Dragonflier was Dollywood’s 2019 addition from Vekoma, and it’s a pretty decent family coaster! It’s very smooth and pulls some decent forces in the ending helix. Definitely a great ride to get kiddos interested in coasters before they move up to the bigger stuff! A word of warning to people taller than about 4 feet- the coaster flies by a fountain, and people with longer legs will splash through it! Definitely took me by surprise the first time.
6. Firechaser Express
Tumblr media
Don’t be fooled by its family-coaster nature- this little guy packs a decent punch! This attraction is a Gerstlauer custom family coaster themed to rirefighters. The ride’s theming is excellent, and its forwards and backwards launches will excite even the most seasoned of riders. This coaster definitely serves as a great step up for newer riders while being a fun ride for all ages to enjoy! The pyrotechnics in the finale are also a really great touch.
5. Tennessee Tornado
Tumblr media
This is easily the best Arrow Dynamics ride I’ve been on- for its age, it’s incredibly smooth and has some really great forces! The hang time you feel passing through those gigantic loops is absolutely sublime, but the best moment of the ride definitely has to be that first drop down the mountain. If you aren’t expecting it, it’ll knock the wind right out of you! Its setting back in the hills also makes this a very scenic coaster and an even better night ride. I couldn’t recommend this coaster enough!
4. Wild Eagle
Tumblr media
This B&M wing coaster can be summed up in a word- “graceful”. This coaster isn’t the most forceful one I’ve ever been on, but that isn’t it’s purpose. Wild Eagle has one of the most beautiful views in the entire park, which pairs wonderfully with how smooth and gentle the ride really is. The entire experience feels like you’re just floating there! Don’t be fooled by its height and inversions- this ride is a beautiful gentle giant that will leave you wanting to come back again and again.
3.
Tumblr media
We’re really hitting the creme de la creme now! Mystery Mine is a quirky Gerstlauer Eurofighter themed to a spooky mine that drives people mad. I know, a somewhat odd theme for the usually very cheery Dollywood, but it really works for this attraction. The ride’s first half is nothing special, but that final drop and the whopping 4 seconds of airtime you get in that stall? Absolutely wonderful. The details of this ride are really fun too- my favorite is the little canary animatronic that’s flips over dead before you ascend the second vertical lift! Mystery Mine is definitely one of the most fun coasters I’ve ever been on.
2. Thunderhead
Tumblr media
It was a really tough decision for what coaster you put on top since both of my top two coaster here are two of my all time favorite coasters (#2 and #3 respectively) but due to just how... special the other is, I had to put Thunderhead in the runner up spot. Thunderhead is a GCI woodie that pulls some truly impressive forces. Now I know I’m a bit of a wooden coaster fanatic, but I would even recommend it to those who are less fond of them. It’s pretty smooth for its age, and the ride’s millenium flyer trains serve to cushion riders from the rest of that woodie rattle. The thing that sets this ride apart for me, however, is the restraints. This ride uses these lap bars that don’t quite come down to your legs and can wiggle up and down about an inch a and a half each direction, allowing for absolutely insane airtime! Oh man, I’m super excited just thinking about this beast...
1. Lightning Rod
Tumblr media
Let’s be honest here, you all saw this coming. I’m sorry! Its reputation is for a really good reason! Lightning Rod is a first-of-its-kind launched wooden coaster by the legendary RMC. This ride is easily the most intense coaster I’ve ever had the fortune to experience! It stands 200 feet tall up a mountain and has airtime so intense it’ll almost bruise your thighs (in the best way possible of course). Riding this monster at might is an even more transcendant experience, because there are literally no lights near the track so it’s impossible to see where you’re going! This coaster is hands-down the best ride at Dollywood, so if you only pick one coaster here to check out, make it lightning rod. I promise you won’t regret it!

Since 8tracks is messed up and playmoss is gonna disappear, I’m posting some of my mixes here. This is a list of songs about feeling disconnected that I made a few years ago.

Note
Sublime
Hearts and souls aligned
Gushing over interests and passions
Sunsets, sunrises firing up the sky
Rainbows after damp and drear
Birds resuming their choral stylings
Butterflies, dragonflies wafting by
That song you forgot you loved on the radio
Fresh baked goods fragrantly filling the air
Settling into a cozy seat
Feet tucked under, nose in book
Discovering a new binge-worthy show
While eating an old standby treat
Game nights spent with good friends
Reminiscing then making new memories
Finding love over and over again
And not least of all, within
