March 20, 1981 - Boston MA
I told Charlie down by the harbor about my theory, today. He just laughed at me and told me that I should just let it go. I can’t. I have to find them! The T was packed as always but I managed to get to the library. All the history books say the same thing that all vampire sightings ended when Japan surrendered. It makes no sense though, there were hardly any vampires in Japan. They weren’t even fighting in the war. I asked the librarian more about the creatures but she didn’t know much. She told me to track down an old man, said his name was Masao. He comes to the library every day around noon. I’ll have to stop by tomorrow to meet him.
Rent is due in three days. I’m only $20 short, might have to pick up an extra shift. I could use the cash. Need to buy milk. Remember to call Anna.

Pippa Latour is the Last Secret Agent
You all know I love a WWII novel recounting the hard work done by women in the name of freedom and peace. When I walked into the library one day to drop off some books, I saw this on the Bestie stand – a display currently housing many New Zealand reads – and immediately knew I had to read it. This is the memoir of Pippa Latour, an SOE agent who lived to the age of 102 before she ever told her…

I’m Doing NANOWRIMO!
Well, not exactly. Not the way I should.
November after November, I've watched fellow writers participate in NANOWRIMO. For those who don’t know, NANOWRIMO begins on November 1st and ends on the 30th, and writers pledge to write 50,000 words in a month. It’s been going on for years and there’s this awesome website if you’re interested.
Tumblr media
I’ve always wanted to participate, but committing myself to writing 50,000 words always seemed too daunting. I’m lucky if I can write a thousand words a day…let alone 1666 words a day. Work exhausts me and lately my focus is *not there*. I don’t like to write on Sundays; I feel like that should be a day of rest. I’m a haphazard writer; I would only do NANOWRIMO in a haphazard way.. So, fully taking part in NANOWRIMO is a “no.”
So why did I say I was going to do NANOWRIMO?
Rather than committing myself to 50,000 words, I am committing myself to completing my Holocaust/WWII novel this month. And submitting it out to some publishing companies. ::Lord, help me!::
Tumblr media
Also, I’ve started on another novel. No, I don’t mean my Regency Novel. That one is going to be my For Fun project. I’ll work on it as I please, no pressure, no panicking over bad writing. This is something different. Earlier this year, my mother and sister read some of the Lady Sheriff stories that had been published. They liked them enough to request that I flesh one of the stories out into a novel.
Tumblr media
I decided not to flesh out one of the short stories, but came up with a separate Lady Sheriff novel. Completely different mystery, crime, adventures…a little romance. I certainly don’t expect to write 50,000 words on it this month, or even begin on the first draft. My practice in writing is to outline a novel, scene by scene and that takes a while. I’m excited though; I’ve already outlined the first nine chapters.
Finishing my Holocaust/WWII novel and making progress on this new Lady Sheriff Novel – that’s my NANOWRIMO commitment. Between the two, and maybe even a little fun writing on the Regency Era Novel, I’m sure there will be 50,000 words written.
Tumblr media
Until next time.

Review: Heroes
December 6, 1941: Best friends Frank and Stanley have it good. Their dads are Navy pilots stationed at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, and the boys get a front-row view of the huge battleships and the sparkling water. Yes, World War II is raging in Europe and in Asia, but the US isn’t involved in the war, and the boys are free to dream about becoming comic book creators. They’ve even invented a superhero…

The Air Raid Book Club by Annie Lyons - a Book Review
This novel is the first work of historical fiction written by author, Annie Lyons. Prior to this dive into history, she had released several titles in the genre of Uplit, and I think this is important to understanding the reason for some of the qualms I had with The Air Raid Book Club, which I will get into later. First of all, what is Uplit? Essentially, as suggested by the title, it’s uplifting…

Blog Tour Arrival - We Must Not Think of Ourselves by Lauren Grodstein
Six million Jews killed. This is why I read books about the Holocaust, both fiction and nonfiction. This is why I think it’s important that people worldwide read these books. Horrors still occur, unfortunately, but nothing to the unprecedented level that occurred during World War II. So when I had the opportunity to read We Must Not Think of Ourselves by Lauren Grodstein, I did so gladly. Our…

Hispanic Heritage Month + Band of Brothers
For the last day of Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15 - Oct. 15), I rolled up my sleeves to do some research on Latinos who served in Easy Company.
Here's who I found…
Antonio C. "Tony" Garcia
Here's the bio & gif set I made for him:
Ynez M. "Tito" Mendoza
Ynez was born September 22, 1925 in California. His parents, Jose and Carlota, were both born in Mexico and had immigrated to the U.S.
He enlisted in Los Angeles in January 1944, and joined Easy Company as a replacement. In October 1944, he was wounded in the lower leg by artillery, but returned to the line December 1944.
After the war, he married and had 3 children. He died on June 30, 2011 at the age of 85.
Wiliam S. "Guillermo" Metzler
William was born and raised in Naco, Arizona. His parents, Francisco and Julia, were born in Hermosillo, in the Mexican state of Sonora. They married, and later immigrated with their first two sons to Arizona, where William and his other siblings were later born.
He was living in Los Angeles when he volunteered for the U.S. Army in August 1942. He was one of the original members of Easy Company and trained at Toccoa.
He was killed in action in Normandy on June 24, 1944, at the age of 22.
Sergio G. Moya
Sergio was born on February 24, 1921, in San Francisco, California.
In February 1943, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was one of the original members of Easy Company and trained at Toccoa.
He was on the C-47 plane with Lt. Meehan that was shot down over Normandy by German anti-aircraft fire on June 6th, 1944 (D-Day). He died at the age of 23.
Joseph "Joe" Ramirez
Here's the bio & gif set I made for him:

March 19, 1981 - Boston MA
Vampires can only be killed by wooden or iron stakes to the heart, sunlight, holy water (it appears that holy water made from running rivers works best - further study needed), garlic, decapitation combined with burning, and much like werewolves: silver bullets. It stands to reason then that a vampire would be most inclined to avoid those situations and items. As we know vampires are intelligent creatures of the night with far too much time on their hands. They must be hiding somewhere. There have been no recorded vampire sightings since September 2, 1945 but I believe that these beasts are still out there. If a vampire were to avoid all above mentioned deaths then there is only one place on this planet it could go. The sea.

Olivia Spooner's The Songbirds of Florence - Another Stunning Kiwi Tale
Olivia Spooner has released another historical fiction book sharing a glimpse into the life of New Zealand women during World War II. The Songbirds of Florence follows Addy and Margot, two of the Tuis serving in New Zealand clubs during the North African campaign. It is a lighter read than other WWII stories I have read and reviewed, so if Codename Helene, The Girl With The Red Hair, The Last…

saw a post last night complaining that the sound of music film and its popularity contribute to the "universalization of the holocaust" and that by depicting an austrian catholic gentile family's opposition to the nazi regime instead of being about jews, it paints some kind of false picture of who the nazis' real targets were. and i'm sorry but that is such a narrow minded, externally motivated reading of the film/musical. and i say this as a jew who broadly agrees that holocaust universalization and the sidelining of "the jewish problem" (as it was known in that era) in film and media is a genuine and pervasive problem. the sound of music...that is really not the right target for your ire, my friend
#sasha speaks#like yeah it is annoying when people spam reblog that gif of georg ripping up the nazi flag right after posting antisemitism#that sucks and i wish it wasn't do prevalent. i also wish antisemitism in general were not so prevalent but yknow.#baby steps or whatever.#but anyway it's not the sound of music's fault that people are using that gif a bunch but misunderstanding nazism#and its specific primary targeting of jews (and romani)#A. i actually don't think it's invalid or bad to show stories about gentiles being threatened by/opposing nazism.#that Was a real thing that happened. the trapp family were in fact real people even if their story is somewhat fictionalized#in the musical#it takes place in 1938. therefore before the holocaust proper had begun#(not that persecution of jews wasn't already a huge thing. the november pogrom was the same year of course.)#but even while racial hatred of jews and romani Was the primary characteristic of nazism and should be recognized and depicted as such#it is not misleading or distracting to also depict the real experience of white gentiles who were threatened by nazism#like. one drop in the bucket. two cakes. whateved#also. and this feels so blatantly obvious to me i shouldnt need to spell it out but.#B. the sound of music was written by two jews in the late 1950s.#it's...it's just not. it's not an example. of a bad faith depiction of wwii/its lead up#sometimes stories are about other things. even when the authors could have made it about more personal subjects to themselves#and the era in which it was created had a very different attitude towards and contrxt for depictions of wwii (& preceding) in media#if you want to get mad at people misinterpreting a musical about the rise of nazism go look on twitter or tiktok for cabaret discourse...#now that's an audience that knows how to miss the gddamn point
