Rey Mysterio and Batista Return on Smackdown's 1000th Episode

After 19 years on television week after week, WWE Smackdown finally aired its 1000th episode, and as one would expect, there were a few special guests in attendance. In addition to Vince McMahon making a rare public appearance, Randy Orton reunited with his former Evolution teammates Triple H, Ric Flair, and superstar-turned-Hollywood-celebrity Batista. Unfortunately, what started as a friendly reunion quickly got tense.

Orton called out Batista on leaving WWE to purse his acting career, which Batista ignored in favor of praising the WWE Universe and his former teammates. However, even Batista felt the need to throw in a zing while he was listing the accomplishments of Triple H: “There is nothing—nothing!—this man hasn't done in this business. Except beat me.”

The two quickly stared each other down, and while the reunion ended in pleasantries, it was clear that there was still some unfinished business between The Animal and The Game. Meanwhile, the main event of the night showcased WWE legend Rey Mysterio as he returned to Smackdown for the first time in four years to face another high-flyer, Shinsuke Nakamura.

Despite debuting in the WWE over 15 years ago, Mysterio proved to the WWE Universe that he hasn't lost a step. The luchador showed off his trademark speed and flexibility, sliding past a “Kinshasa” attempt and nailing Nakamura with a running body slam out of the ring.

Eventually, Mysterio got his patented 619 on Nakamura for the pin. Of course, there was one last surprise for Smackdown 1000: The Undertaker. After Mysterio's win, the lights dimmed, and the gong sounded. The Undertaker came into the ring to tell the WWE Universe that he'll have three words for D-Generation X at Crown Jewel. “Rest. In. Peace.”

Smackdown 1000 continued the show's legacy of highlighting some of the best talent of the WWE Universe. Here's to a thousand more.

The Top 5 Moments of Lauren Jones’ WWE Career

Following the inaugural Diva Search in the summer of 2004, the WWE went on a hiring spree by scooping up literally every bikini-clad woman who participated in the contest. The upside? A major influx of women on the roster unlike any other time in WWE history. The downside? The Jazz’s and Molly Holly’s of the world, who worked so hard for respect in a male-dominated industry, were forced to exit stage right to make way for women who hadn’t even heard of wrestling before the Diva Search. Some of these hirings, like Michelle McCool and Maria Kanellis, lasted way longer than anyone expected and carved out a nice place for themselves in the business. Others, like Joy Giovanni and Amy Weber, would receive bit roles on television before fading away within the span of a few months. But there’s one signee who surpasses them all, one who I hope needs no formal introduction as her WWE tenure is the stuff of legends. I am, of course, referring to Lauren Jones.

Wait, what’s that? You haven’t heard of Lauren Jones? She was easily the most iconic blonde WWE Diva circa 2004-2005. Well, besides Trish Status. And Stacy Keibler. And Torrie Wilson. And Dawn Marie, who isn’t blonde but fucking Al Wilson to death is an accomplishment transcending hair color. And you mean to tell me you can’t remember a single thing she did? Need I remind you of when she did that thing? Or appeared in that segment? Or how about her perfect 0-0 match record? Eva Marie could never.

But, okay, for those of you who are inexplicably lost on all things Lauren, here is a summary of her 5 greatest moments. It was admittedly hard to narrow it down to 5, but sometimes we’re all forced to make the tough choices:

She Appeared on SmackDown a Few Times: Remember when Lauren Jones did that on SmackDown a few times? Who could forget when she joined her fellow Divas in interrupting a cruiserweight tag match and single-handedly ended that division? Or when she took part in seducing Heidenreich with a giant chocolate bar, leaving the man so heartbroken he left the WWE and resorted to a life of wrestling Doink rip-offs on the indy scene? I mean, come on, simply iconic. SmackDown’s 1000th episode wouldn’t be complete without mentioning these gems.

She Participated in the Rookie Diva of the Year Contest: You may know Vince McMahon double-crossing Bret Hart at Survivor Series 1997 as the definitive screw job, but that’s merely a product of historical revisionism. The real definitive screw job is Lauren Jones losing to Joy Giovanni in the Rookie Diva of the Year Contest at No Way Out 2005. What a travesty. Like, you can’t tell me Joy winning 65% of the online fan votes wasn’t due to Russian bot interference. Or that Michelle McCool and Rochelle Loewen were the Jill Stein and Gary Johnson of this election who simply existed to take away votes from the superior candidate. Trust me, after all these years, #I’mStillWithHer.

She Had a Backstage Segment with The Big Show: On the January 20, 2005 episode of SmackDown, The Big Show awaited Kurt Angle backstage with a steel chair, hoping to wallop his arch nemesis at the first chance he got. But who came through the backdoor? None other than Lauren Jones and faithful sidekick Rochelle Loewen, of course. Show then asked them if they had seen Angle to which they were basically like “Um, no” and Show was crushed. Lauren literally shot his shit down without remorse. Paul White found dead!

She Was Released: In June of 2005, Lauren Jones’ profile was quietly removed from WWE.com and she was granted her release from the company. The fabric of WWE was changed forever by this moment and it’s not that much of a stretch to say it kickstarted the Women’s Revolution as we know it. Queen of exits!

She Had a Canceled TV Series: Okay, this didn’t happen in the WWE, or have anything to do with wrestling at all, but Lauren Jones later starred on the Fox reality series Anchorwoman, which is one of those elite shows cancelled after a single episode. Um, can Charlotte Flair claim that? How about Manami Toyota? I think not. Queen of exits and TV cancellations? I am shook.

Honestly, if your wig isn’t snatched after reading all of that, I don’t know how to help you. The only highlight reels that will ever come close are the ones I’ll inevitably cover for Carmella DeCesare and Amy Zidian.

13 Years History of Money in the Bank

The creation of the fight for the Money in The Bank case goes back to 2005, being designed by Chris Jericho and consolidated by Erick Bischoff in the same year. The debut of this fight took place in WrestleMania 21. the inaugural participants were Christian, Kane, Chris Benoit, Shelton Benjamin, Edge and Jericho, the match lasted 15:17 minutes, resulting in the winner "The Rated-R Superstar"(Edge). The fight remained in "the showcase of the immortals" for six editions resulting from winners Edge (2005), RVD (2006), Mr. Kennedy (2007), CM Punk (2008 and 2009) and Jack Swagger (2010), the latter was the conclusive winner in the editions held at WrestleMania. After five years of testing, WWE saw great expectations but above all gains turning this magnificent fight into a PPV event. Money in The Bank PPV was held on July 18, 2010, celebrated after just over 100 days since its last edition at WrestleMania. As a private event, thirteen suitcases have been disputed so far, highlighting 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 editions in which two suitcases were in play, one per brand. On the part of Raw, they were winners: The Miz (2010), Alberto del Rio (2011), John Cena (2012) and Randy Orton (2013). While the blue brand winners were: Kane (2010), Daniel Bryan (2011), Dolph Ziggler (2012) and Damien Sandow (2013). As of the 2014 contest only one briefcase was held, resulting in winners Seth Rollins (2014), Sheamus (2015), Dean Ambrose (2016) and Baron Corbin (2017). It should be noted that in the 2017 edition, the debut of the first ever Women's Money in The Bank was made, resulting in the winner Carmella. Kane is the fighter with more participation in Money in the Bank history (6). The fight that more participants have had is the edition of WrestleMania 26 with ten participants. On the other hand, the least number of participants was the edition of Money in The Bank 2012 (Raw) and Money in The Bank Femenil, with only five. The fastest trade in history was Kane who swapped it on the same night defeating Rey Mysterio and winning the World Heavyweight Championship. Meanwhile, the longest trade was the Edge making it effective 280 days later against John Cena in the New Years Revolution event and become WWE Champion. The longest fight was the edition of the Money in The Bank men's 2017 with 29:50 minutes. On the other hand, the contest held at WrestleMania 22 was the shortest time with a duration of 12:21 minutes. The target of the exchange of the Briefcase was the World Heavyweight Championship managing to change hands six times, five of them consecutively (2007-2010). The failed exchanges have been four times, Mr. Kennedy which lost his briefcase in the Raw of May 7, 2007, against Edge. John Cena in the 1000th episode of Raw, Damien Sandow in the Raw of October 20, 2013, and Baron Corbin in the SmackDown live on August 15, 2017. Finally, Rob Van Dam is the only fighter to exchange the briefcase for a head-to-head chance to emerge victoriously this happening at ECW One Night Stand 2006, beating John Cena and winning the WWE Championship.
