Paradise Cove was shut down in the 1990's but today it is mostly known in connection with several murder cases where the traumatized children who came out, were unable to cope with real life.
The manager founded Midwest Academy in Keokuk. His replacement was convicted of assault with intent to commit sexual abuse, sexual exploitation of a child by a counselor and child endangerment. The secrecy surrounding the program set up as with Paradise Cove endangered the police investigation.

Also please look into the Troubled Teen Industry. While the industry is now targeting federal money instead of private clients as its primary source of clientele, it has relied on wealthy families to send their children to abusive institutions for over 3 decades now (the TTI sprung up after the fall of Institutions and Asylums). Some of these parents know that they are sending their children to abusive places, but many of them don't. Children being a marginalized class means that their parents ignorance puts them in dangerous situations.
If you want to learn more about the TTI, a 3 part docuseries recently released on Netflix called The Program that details a specific branch of institutions called WWASP. Not all TTI programs are like the programs featured in this series (mine wasn't), but they are all horrific abuses of children's fundamental human rights. Be warned that the series goes into detail about the abuses that happened at this program and shows recovered surveillance footage of some of this abuse.
As a kid, when your parents are poor, you're poor. If they don't have money, that means none of you have money. But if someone's parents are rich, that doesn't necessarily mean the kid is. Sometimes rich peoples' kids aren't rich kids, they're just some rich freak's exotic pets that can talk but aren't allowed to.

"Miaellaaa" at Midwest Academy
I myself am a survivor of Midwest Academy in Keokuk, Iowa, which was shut down back in 2016.
i was there when i was 15 for 2.5 months and i think i would have been there until i was 18 if it hadn’t been for the miracle of 2 boys in the program turning 18 and immediately going to the police and the FBI coming in and shutting it down, the owner of the program Ben Trane is in prison now. it’s been 7 years since i went through this but it still impacts my life every single day and i always feel like i have to keep it hidden away so deeply because nobody can ever understand or relate at all.
I talk to a few of the girls from program occasionally still, but otherwise it feels like nobody in my day to day life would ever get it. it’s my biggest hurt and no matter what horrors i could go through in my life, this experience will always be the very worst. today i discovered this community and although i wanna cry and hug each one of you and feel so sad you all went through this too, i feel so good that there’s people who get it and understand. we all survived and deserve to live normal and happy

Episode 156 - Interview with @trappedintreatment hosts @rebecca_mellinger & @itscarolinecole. Absolutely honoured to have had the chance to collaborate with Rebecca and Caroline recently and chat to them at length about the new podcast from @parishilton and @iheartmediaofficial called ‘Trapped in Treatment’ - an expert led, deep look into the Troubled Teen Industry. Here is a snippet of Caroline’s story. A survivor of a spin-off ‘Provo Canyon School’ programme. Caroline was silenced once before. Now she uses her experiences and expertise as co-ceo of @unsilenced_now - dedicated to ensuring that NO SURVIVOR of institutionalised abuse through the “troubled teen” industry ever goes silenced again. Caroline now uses the power of her voice. And she cannot and will not be stopped. Rebecca has been swept up into the world of activism and legal reform - as appointed impact producer for Paris Hilton, she is paving the way for all survivors to have their evidence presented before senators and state and federal judges and the US legal system. Rebecca also cannot be stopped. For almost 2 years, the cult vault podcast has dedicated hours of time to ensuring survivors have a platform to share their experiences. And this will not end. To mark this collaboration and to continue offering a space for survivors to share their stories, there will be ANOTHER in-depth interview coming TOMORROW with a former resident of French Camp Academy in Mississippi. Thank you ladies for all you do with your activism work. Thank you for being allies. Thank you for exposing a multi-billion dollar industry. Thank you allowing survivors to become UNSILENCED. Subscribe to Trapped in Treatment today and listen to the first 5 episodes now. #breakingcodesilence #trappedintreatment #parishilton #endthetti #cults #cult #endchildabuse #endchildabusenow #troubledteenindustrysurvivor #troubledteens #troubledteenindustry #tti #troubledyouth #provocanyon #provocanyonschool #cedu #synanon #wwasp #wwaspsurvivors #institutionalizedabuse #endeducationpoverty #educationalabuse #childtrauma #iseeyousurvivor #iseeyousurvivors #unsilencednow #unsilenced #podcasthost #iheartmedia #warnerbrosstudios https://www.instagram.com/p/CaInxNBIqk6/?utm_medium=tumblr

Bad Kid
if your child has a serious mental illness or has experienced a trauma, or is suffering from anxiety or even if they are using drugs the worst possible thing you can do is send them to a lockdown facility where all their freedoms and rights are taken away and they are psychologically broken until they emotionally crack. As for drug use, the ‘D.A.R.E’ generation spread serious misinformation about drugs and essentially used propaganda to justify locking up hundreds of thousands of people to make money for private prisons. ‘Troubled Teen’ is a marketing tactic used to demonize mental illness and drug use. I have multiple friends who were sent away to places (some wilderness others ranches/facilities) and when they came back NONE OF THEM WERE THE SAME. One kid was an alcoholic, the other one was a ‘bad kid’ who did a lot of drugs and didn’t give a shit and the last kid had extremely catholic parents who decided that, because he was drinking and smoking weed, he needed to be sent away (he wasn’t an alcoholic or a drug addict). When the last kid came back he was literally brain dead and would sit in the corner of the room with his arms crossed and no expression on his face. There is no regulation of these sorts of places and many kids have died because of medical neglect or rough handling. Certain senators have been trying to pass regulation but it has failed. I just came across an article stating that a Democratic representative is introducing the bill again this year (I have little hope in it passing). It is worth mentioning that Mitt Romney was the CEO of a company called ‘Bain Capital’ that owns a company that runs these places. I would recommend going on Wikipedia and searching either Aspen Education Group or WWASP (a couple larger companies involved with this industry) and take a look at all the former schools and wilderness therapies that have been shut down, the lawsuits filed against them and the abuse allegations.

OH ALSO LET ME SCREAM THIS IS A $23 BILLION DOLLAR INDUSTRY
The WWASP programs like in The Program linked above Brainwashed the parents FIRST to get to the kids and their staff was financially incentivized to keep kids in the program as long as possible to get max $$$, which meant getting the kids more “in trouble” aka MORE ABUSE was incentivized bc if you abuse the kids, they act out more, aka they’re in trouble more aka they haven’t “completed the program” yet.
Damn a lot of gen X and millennial teens sure were Guinea pigs in the horrific experiment* of all the “scared straight” and “behavioral corrections programs” and “military schools” and “therapeutic boarding schools” and “pray out the gay camps” and other fucking abusive “give us your troubled teens and we’ll fix em up” bullshit that was extremely popular in the 90s and 00s.
They’re telling all the stories now and have been for years and the depths of the horrors are mind boggling. They’re making all the docs and writing all the books and pulling back the lids on all the seedy underbellies and throwing the terror into the light so we can all stare at all the traumas that occurred and in some places are still occurring.
*btw we can say beyond all doubt none of this shit “worked” to help ANYONE of course. Except the abusers who got to get rich off of abuse. So many of the survivors will be the first to say they’re deeply fucked up by it and many haven’t survived the experience. Messed up beyond words.

It's not that they trust Misty, it's that for all the awful things that she's done, they've done just as bad...or worse.
I definitely get the profound bond of mutual trauma and sharing the weight of sins too terrible for any one who wasn't there to comprehend, I did go to boarding school for five years. It's just that I feel like we, as animals, have a certain level of visible violent mental instability that we intuitively know not to show our throats to. There's absolutely a level of looking after your own out of bone deep debts and wretched guilt, because you can't kill a monster when you're the one who helped feed it, when it's more a part of you now than your own skin. I get that, but I cannot endorse ignoring your survival instincts just because you haven't learned a single coping mechanism in thirty years.
Misty is like, "Hey, is anyone else gonna commit this unspeakably depraved act?" and doesn't even wait for an answer.
Anyway, I'll almost certainly wind up with different opinions by the end of the show. I'm just rambling about it as I watch.
#it's the situational madness#we're all capable of horrors beyond our knowing under the right circumstance#but misty is not into waiting for circimstances#girl just wants to get straight to the horrors#i do like this very much about her#i really don't think anyone in this show is being stupid or irrational#they're just acting like people#broken fucked up people#their behavior makes perfect sense in the context of the story#i just like rambling about media as i consume it#oh god#oh fuck#misty is my poor little meow meow#genuinely did not mean for that to happen#yellowjackets#anyway i can't wait to see what happens to jackie#i feel like it's gonna fuck me up for days!#fun fact: my therapist told me she has clients who are survivors of wwasp schools#she was so disturbed by how casually i mentioned forced brandings#and was like that isn't normal that doesn't even happen at wilderness schools#you went to a very bad school#so i wasn't 100% joking about the boarding school thing#i know exactly the sort of shit that happens when you trap a bunch of teenage girls in a high stress environment#the seance was spot on flawless#something very similar happened to me#except instead of speaking french and cracking her head on a window#the girl grabbed someone's throat and pinned her down while spitting blood on her face

Stop calling going to boarding school a cult, it's offensive to actual cult survivors.
I'll assume you're asking this question out of good faith, and answer as such.
The "boarding schools" i went to were part of the TTI, or troubled teen industry. They quite literally fit the definition of a non-religious cult using the BITE model. I use boarding school as a shorthand because not many people know what residential treatment centers are.
They are not boarding schools how you think of boarding schools. They are groups headed by either one or a few people dedicated to completely breaking a teen by any means possible and indoctrinating them into a new way of thinking.
They were by definition cults, or if you want to get really technical and down to the nitty gritty, high control groups. Not every cult is religious, though most are.
Here are some sources. I'd also recommend heal-online.org and the r/TTI subreddit to learn more. You can also look up "breaking code silence."
Content warning for cults and child abuse.

Watching Corporate Casket by Illuminaughtii.
*explains a school was founded by an organization called WWASP*
Me: Well, nothing created by WASPs has ever been evil...
*says it was run by a person called JK*
Me: Nobody named JK could possibly be evil.
Spoiler: they're evil.

Even when the programs themselves are closed, the curriculum and methods are used to damage children in so-called residential treatment facilities today. Nothing has changed, only the names of the facilities.

Troubled by troubled teens
Troubled by troubled teens
…took awhile to get there, but yeah, I’m sorry mom despite it all.
After just starting my 2nd quarter back in school after 16+ years since I last attended I wanted to share a few pieces that I was really proud of from the quarter that actually start to show a change of pace and rhythm in thought after all these years. Finished with an “A” in English comp, first time I think that letter ever…
