Paradise Cove was shut down in the 1990's but today it is mostly known in connection with several murder cases where the traumatized children who came out, were unable to cope with real life.
The manager founded Midwest Academy in Keokuk. His replacement was convicted of assault with intent to commit sexual abuse, sexual exploitation of a child by a counselor and child endangerment. The secrecy surrounding the program set up as with Paradise Cove endangered the police investigation.

"Miaellaaa" at Midwest Academy
I myself am a survivor of Midwest Academy in Keokuk, Iowa, which was shut down back in 2016.
i was there when i was 15 for 2.5 months and i think i would have been there until i was 18 if it hadn’t been for the miracle of 2 boys in the program turning 18 and immediately going to the police and the FBI coming in and shutting it down, the owner of the program Ben Trane is in prison now. it’s been 7 years since i went through this but it still impacts my life every single day and i always feel like i have to keep it hidden away so deeply because nobody can ever understand or relate at all.
I talk to a few of the girls from program occasionally still, but otherwise it feels like nobody in my day to day life would ever get it. it’s my biggest hurt and no matter what horrors i could go through in my life, this experience will always be the very worst. today i discovered this community and although i wanna cry and hug each one of you and feel so sad you all went through this too, i feel so good that there’s people who get it and understand. we all survived and deserve to live normal and happy

Episode 156 - Interview with @trappedintreatment hosts @rebecca_mellinger & @itscarolinecole. Absolutely honoured to have had the chance to collaborate with Rebecca and Caroline recently and chat to them at length about the new podcast from @parishilton and @iheartmediaofficial called ‘Trapped in Treatment’ - an expert led, deep look into the Troubled Teen Industry. Here is a snippet of Caroline’s story. A survivor of a spin-off ‘Provo Canyon School’ programme. Caroline was silenced once before. Now she uses her experiences and expertise as co-ceo of @unsilenced_now - dedicated to ensuring that NO SURVIVOR of institutionalised abuse through the “troubled teen” industry ever goes silenced again. Caroline now uses the power of her voice. And she cannot and will not be stopped. Rebecca has been swept up into the world of activism and legal reform - as appointed impact producer for Paris Hilton, she is paving the way for all survivors to have their evidence presented before senators and state and federal judges and the US legal system. Rebecca also cannot be stopped. For almost 2 years, the cult vault podcast has dedicated hours of time to ensuring survivors have a platform to share their experiences. And this will not end. To mark this collaboration and to continue offering a space for survivors to share their stories, there will be ANOTHER in-depth interview coming TOMORROW with a former resident of French Camp Academy in Mississippi. Thank you ladies for all you do with your activism work. Thank you for being allies. Thank you for exposing a multi-billion dollar industry. Thank you allowing survivors to become UNSILENCED. Subscribe to Trapped in Treatment today and listen to the first 5 episodes now. #breakingcodesilence #trappedintreatment #parishilton #endthetti #cults #cult #endchildabuse #endchildabusenow #troubledteenindustrysurvivor #troubledteens #troubledteenindustry #tti #troubledyouth #provocanyon #provocanyonschool #cedu #synanon #wwasp #wwaspsurvivors #institutionalizedabuse #endeducationpoverty #educationalabuse #childtrauma #iseeyousurvivor #iseeyousurvivors #unsilencednow #unsilenced #podcasthost #iheartmedia #warnerbrosstudios https://www.instagram.com/p/CaInxNBIqk6/?utm_medium=tumblr

Bad Kid
if your child has a serious mental illness or has experienced a trauma, or is suffering from anxiety or even if they are using drugs the worst possible thing you can do is send them to a lockdown facility where all their freedoms and rights are taken away and they are psychologically broken until they emotionally crack. As for drug use, the ‘D.A.R.E’ generation spread serious misinformation about drugs and essentially used propaganda to justify locking up hundreds of thousands of people to make money for private prisons. ‘Troubled Teen’ is a marketing tactic used to demonize mental illness and drug use. I have multiple friends who were sent away to places (some wilderness others ranches/facilities) and when they came back NONE OF THEM WERE THE SAME. One kid was an alcoholic, the other one was a ‘bad kid’ who did a lot of drugs and didn’t give a shit and the last kid had extremely catholic parents who decided that,  because he was drinking and smoking weed, he needed to be sent away (he wasn’t an alcoholic or a drug addict). When the last kid came back he was literally brain dead and would sit in the corner of the room with his arms crossed and no expression on his face. There is no regulation of these sorts of places and many kids have died because of medical neglect or rough handling. Certain senators have been trying to pass regulation but it has failed. I just came across an article stating that a Democratic representative is introducing the bill again this year (I have little hope in it passing). It is worth mentioning that Mitt Romney was the CEO of a company called ‘Bain Capital’ that owns a company that runs these places. I would recommend going on Wikipedia and searching either Aspen Education Group or WWASP (a couple larger companies involved with this industry) and take a look at all the former schools and wilderness therapies that have been shut down, the lawsuits filed against them and the abuse allegations.

Stop calling going to boarding school a cult, it's offensive to actual cult survivors.
I'll assume you're asking this question out of good faith, and answer as such.
The "boarding schools" i went to were part of the TTI, or troubled teen industry. They quite literally fit the definition of a non-religious cult using the BITE model. I use boarding school as a shorthand because not many people know what residential treatment centers are.
They are not boarding schools how you think of boarding schools. They are groups headed by either one or a few people dedicated to completely breaking a teen by any means possible and indoctrinating them into a new way of thinking.
They were by definition cults, or if you want to get really technical and down to the nitty gritty, high control groups. Not every cult is religious, though most are.
Here are some sources. I'd also recommend heal-online.org and the r/TTI subreddit to learn more. You can also look up "breaking code silence."
Content warning for cults and child abuse.

Watching Corporate Casket by Illuminaughtii.
*explains a school was founded by an organization called WWASP*
Me: Well, nothing created by WASPs has ever been evil...
*says it was run by a person called JK*
Me: Nobody named JK could possibly be evil.
Spoiler: they're evil.

This video testimony is from Youtube. It covers a stay at asa by the Sea and Cross Creek Academy, which both are closed.
Cross Creek Academy as result of the economy and a grown-up number of former victims.
Casa by the Sea as result of the authorities in Mexico securing the safety of the children placed there.
Both places were part of the WWASP Franchise. The managers of WWASP started this chain after they quit working for Provo Canyon School.

WWASP Survivors is ran by a dedicated group of concerned alumni of WWASP-affiliated programs. Our mission is threefold: to advocate for those still being held and abused in WWASP programs, to support those who have previously been held in a WWASP program, and to raise awareness of the true nature of WWASP to save children and their families from being abused and scammed.

Ok I'm spilling the fucking tea. No, the fuckheads didnt hire me (not that I would've ever accepted in a million years after the shit I read), and I'm pretty damn glad about it and I hope theres a special spot in hell waiting for them.
Never Give Up Youth Healing Center is a psychiatric facility out in buttfuck nowhere Nevada desert. There is no access to clean drinking water, it is full of arsenic. I found claims online that it is affiliated with WWASP and Richard Lichfield. It opened the same year Northwest Academy, located on the same property, shut down due to child abuse. NGUYHC is currently under investigation for sexual and physical abuse. It has been under investigation since 2019 yet still remains open. During the interview the HR lady literally said "the kids will just look at you like your fresh blood, they will bite and kick and attack, and they know exactly what they're doing they just like doing it. We have the facility far out in the desert so they cant try to run" literally demonizing these children. State reports found that they medicate them without consent. A riot broke out several months ago, one staff member ended up airlifted to a hospital.
Two interviews today, one was virtual because its located in a facility 100 miles away that offers a shuttle to get to. Then volunteering in a few hours. And 4 more interviews, waiting on 2 to be confirmed for the next week. Been running around like a chicken without a head. But I've felt a lot more alive than when I was spiralling at the thought of being stuck in an unfulfilling office for the rest of my life.
