Talismans for the Great Mother,
she of the earth,
of myriad vegetative forms,
roots that slumber and twist and twine
dark fruit that hangs heavy on the vine
She of the beasts
Fanged, clawed, furred
in the feral cloak of motherhood
wombs that quicken, blood and brine
verdant heart of leonine
•••
Made with recycled/reused textiles as well as a variety of threads, bone and glass beads, textured paints and varnished elements.
Comes in a decorated box with corn stalks and handmade label.

Toshiko Takaezu: Worlds Within
Born in Hawaii to a Japanese émigré family, Takaezu, is a creator of worlds. From her upright cylindrical “trees” to her “moons” nestled in hammocks, her work reflects the natural universe and imagines new ones. The unseen rattles in her closed forms and the woven rugs that accompany her ceramic works add layer upon layer to her art.

(2012) World Map, old world style. This is one of the few pieces where I actually kept track of how long it took me, which was, 36 weeks, assuming 7 hours/week (1 hour daily). So, approx 252 hours.
Which is why my parents saying "Oh, you could sell that!" is so disingenuous. No I couldn't. Not for anything like the value of the labor.
This piece includes seed beads, blending filament, and metallic threads, all of which are much easier to see in real life.

Part of why I think it's important to pick up a skill that requires challenge or skill is not only that it can be a great experience to have, but it teaches you so many things you never expected.
I've realized the reason I feel ancient crocheting is that this is a skill humans have been doing for thousands of years: textiling, cloth-making, and creating. Technology is amazing, don't get me wrong, but I think many people take for granted what technology has done for us, and we forget sometimes that these skills take work and effort, and continuous effort!
It doesn't matter what you pick up as a skill or craft, and you absolutely should do it in a way that accommodates you, but finding a skill or craft and doing it will teach you things you never considered.

Vote on Suvi Yarn Base!
Help me choose the base for the Suvi Yarn!
Tumblr media
No matter what, I'm planning to use these two pieces mini batts - the one on the left is random animal fiber, the one on the right is recycled sari silk (it's not obvious in the picture, but there's some little bits of red in there, for childhood thematic reasons). It'll be about 1.5 ounces together. For reference, both of those together will be about the same as either the brown or the silver in Eursulon's yarn.
Pictures under the cut:

Neighborhood Fiber Arts can be found here! All of them are 75% Bluefaced Leicester, 25% Silk, because Suvi should be a silk blend
316 Dye Studio can be found here! This is a Merino/Alpaca/Camel/SIlk blend - fancy (and not that dissimilar to what Eursulon's yarn is made out of.
Honeygold Acres can be found here! They're merino and targhee, respectively.

GARDEN OF POISONS: HELLEBORE
textile art sculpture by xphaiea
Hellebore has long being valued for it's potent toxicity. In various tales from Greek mythology, hellebore is used to cure madness, the daughters of the king of Argos and Heracles were both cured of temporary insanity with hellebore.
In the Ancient World two varieties were recognised - 'black hellebore' used to treat paralysis, gout and other diseases, and 'white hellebore' believed to have been used as a purgative by Hippocrates.
Hellebore has also been used to repel evil from livestock, and when dried and ground, was believed to have the property of invisibility. Victorians viewed the plant as representing the concept of delirium.
