WAND WOODS, BRIEFLY
hello friends! today i thought i could bring you something that some might find a bit useful, since many in the hogwarts legacy fandom may be interested in defining the wandlore for either their original characters, or existing characters, but can't be bothered to read through all the wand woods, either because it would take too damn long, or you're for one reason or another not fond of using the Pottermore website

MISC. HEADCANONS
HOUSE: Ravenclaw
‘Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw If you’ve a ready mind Where those of wit and learning Will always find their kind.’ Ravenclaw is the house renowned for its wit, wisdom, and for only accepting the cleverest students. Many assume this means that all Ravenclaws are brainiacs who enjoy nothing more than studying and spending time in the library. While there are certainly plenty of Ravenclaws who fit that description, there are many others who demonstrate that cleverness doesn’t just apply to book learning.
Craig was initially apprehensive about his house placement. He simply didn't see the appeal of getting bogged down in the nitty gritty of academia, nor did he consider himself exceptionally smart (not that he was unintelligent by any means, just not at the prodigal levels of intellect one typically associates with Ravenclaw). However, as he would come to learn, he met the criteria in different ways.
Craig is witty, perceptive, and quietly brilliant. He may not always be noticed right away, but he's respected for his insightfulness and kindhearted nature. One would think this compassion would align more with Hufflepuff, but it is his emotional intelligence that earned him his placement in Ravenclaw. He's highly empathetic and intuitive, and this lends well to discerning one's true feelings and intentions. He's no Legilimens, of course, but he is very observant. He also demonstrates a level of maturity beyond his years, and a love of learning that isn't just for show.
WAND: Alder wood. Unicorn hair core. 13 ¼ inches in length. Unyielding.
Alder is an unyielding wood. Yet more often than not, its ideal owner is not stubborn or obstinate, but often helpful, considerate and most likeable. Whereas most wand woods seek similarity in the characters of those they will best serve, alder is unusual in that it seems to desire a nature that is, if not precisely opposite to its own, then certainly of a markedly different type. When an alder wand is happily placed, it becomes a magnificent, loyal helpmate. Of all wand types, alder is best suited to non-verbal spell work, whence comes its reputation for being suitable only for the most advanced witches and wizards. Unicorn hair generally produces the most consistent magic, and is least subject to fluctuations and blockages. Wands with unicorn cores are generally the most difficult to turn to the Dark Arts. They are the most faithful of all wands, and usually remain strongly attached to their first owner, irrespective of whether they were an accomplished witch or wizard. Minor disadvantages of unicorn hair are that they do not make the most powerful wands (although the wand wood may compensate) and that they are prone to melancholy if seriously mishandled, meaning that the hair may ‘die’ and need replacing.

A Swashbuckle in the Mist (Bobbi +Clay)
Location: Finney Docks
Characters: Bobbi (Elle-Huxian), Clay (Tapir-Hunter)
Summary: Clay and Bobbie fight off a raiding party from the lost fleet
Trigger Warnings: Genital Mutilation, Head Trauma
Clay sat on a pier of Finney Docks watching the sunset spill oranges and violet across the blue sea, the water a murky mirror of the sky above. He leaned against the wooden piling, ignoring the bite of barnacles against his back, unfocused dark eyes staring past the dark forest of ship masts bobbing in the harbor, silhouetted against the evening’s roseate glow. The bustle of the docks had subsided with the waning hours. Docking cranes and fishnets lay idle while dockworkers and sailors murmured and smoked on the pier. Dockside bars were lanterns of light and laughter in the darkening evening, but Clay just kept his eyes on the horizon.
Watch that old fire as it flickers and dies
That once blessed the household and lit up our lives
It shone for the friends and the clinking of glasses
I'll tend to the flame, you can worship the ashes….
The voices of Robin, Yates, Darley, and Sattin mingled with a practiced resonant harmony. The sailors mended nets, whittled, and gutted fish long after others had quit the pier. Sea Shanties flowed from their lips and memories, the crewmen having practiced together since a childhood of listening to their parents sing these same verses, a line of legacy that threaded the lives of hard-working people together across generations.
Heave with a will boys and heave long and strong
Away Rio!
Sing the good chorus for 'tis a good song
And we're bound for the Rio Grande, and it's
Away Rio! Away Rio!
Sing fare thee well, my pretty young girl, and
We're bound for the Rio Grande…
The sailors noticed the fifth fellow that’d stayed with them, but Clay just listened and made no trouble. Robin had raised his eyebrows to his crewmates between shanties and gestured with a filet knife in silent inquiry if this stony faced lad was sober or ‘all there’. Sattin rolled her eyes and quietly implied that this one poked around in shipwrecks looking for some of the …strange sights…that seasoned hands knew it was trouble to ever talk about openly. The Hunter, whose mutant senses made the whispers as audible as if the conspiring crewmates were talking directly at him, just smirked and contentedly watched the sun sink beyond the waterline.
Yew that is old, in churchyard mould, he breedeth a mighty bow
Alder for shoes do wise men choose, and Beech for cups also
But when you have killed
And your bowl it is filled, and your shoes are clean outworn
Back you must speed for all that you need to Oak, and Ash, and Thorn
Sing Oak, and Ash, and Thorn, good sirs
All on a midsummer's morn
Surely we'll sing of no little thing
In Oak, and Ash, and Thorn…
Fog rolled in after the last gasp of evening had faded, as if it were a living thing that the sun had kept chained. Sheets of thick vapor snuck over the pier and slithering amongst the ships at anchor. Clay stirred for the first time in his vigil, as the Slayer had been patiently tracking the approach of something unseen that’d shown itself at last. He stood and started doing stretches against the piling without any self-consciousness as sea shanties defied the fog.
There once was a ship that put to sea
The name of the ship was the Billy of Tea
The winds blew up, her bow dipped down
Oh blow, my bully boys, blow
Soon may the Wellerman come
To bring us sugar and tea and rum
One day, when the tonguing is done
We'll take our leave and go…
The song ceased as Clay interrupted after so long in companionable silence. The Slayer told the sailors, for their sake, that they needed to get inside right now and keep their doors locked. The four sailors looked at each uncertainly before Clay slapped down money for drinks on a barrel beside the crewmates. His advice was heeded immediately.
“I once knew an emperor, and this was almost two thousand years ago, who was obsessed with the idea of mapping out all the land that he ruled.” Bobbi heaved a sigh at the memory, sniffing at the recycled air within her houseboat. She leaned back on her makeshift hammock, a gift from one of her boys, the descendants of her once great pirate crew that now shares the struggle of mundane fishing with her, all because they knew the true value of the seas. None of them envied their peers, for they had none. “He had recreated his entire empire on an island he spent a great deal of gold, and lives, constructing… Would you believe that this was all in a lake in his imperial estates?”
Bobbi received no answer, which she had expected but could not be troubled to come to terms with, so she scoffed at the silence instead. “On this island of his, each molehill was turned into a mountain, each river a smaller rivulet. It takes him half an hour just to walk around the perimeter of this island.” She smirked as she looked up at the ceiling, eyes squinting at the artificial light that served as a beacon not only against the darkness of each cold night but also against her loneliness. In her head, she likened it to the pale light before dawn, when a hundred men would wade and swim out to carefully repair any damage wrought by the weather or the wild fowl. “Such futile attempts… But futility doth maketh purpose.”
In the silence that surrounded her and the prized katana on display, to which she was speaking, she had almost fallen asleep, her eyes heavy with the baggage of a long life lived to the fullest, only to be shackled by the loss of her soul. For any huxian, that would mean their last tail, or even just the first, but for Baozhai? Her soul was her ship, the Jade Wind, that which the Lost Fleet had taken from her, ripped from her very hands, along with the few unfortunate crewmates that had followed her to their doom. “So dramatic…” She murmured in her daze, until something woke her up, stirred her upright. “Hmm? Is that…? No, it can’t be…”
As if on a spell, Bobbi bolted from her respite and into the arms of a familiar fog, loathing rising from within her as did sparks of electricity from her own body, what remains of her huxian nature, eager to claim justice and vengeance for what had been taken, what had been lost. “Well, well, well… If it isn’t the assholes who owe me a ship… I’ve seen this movie before. You better not have a monkey with you. There’s no one here named Jack.” With a sprint and a lunge, Bobbi fearlessly jumped into the fray. For any huxian, conflict was something to avoid, but for Baozhai? She has already lost all her tails, plus her ship: She has nothing left to lose.
Clay let his sixth sense take over, each of the rising corpses registering as a blot of undeath on his awareness, a cold toxicity that called to him through the roiling fog. Thick vapor drowned docks, turning tall pilings and ship masts into lone islands in a sea of blue-white. Firearms would’ve been a liability with this much obscuration and civilian presence. So, the Slayer drew a machete from a sheath and plunged into the haunted fog.
Corpses scaled piers and the sides with a fervor born of starvation. Sea life flourished in undead bodies that swelled with drowned bloating. Corals climbed up some of the bodies like lichen, blooming with vivid colors against cadaverous flesh. Eels and crabs gnawed in the constantly regenerating chest cavities of a few of the zombies, while barnacles and mussels had turned some of the walking dead into mollusk encrusted statues. Kelp and seaweed trailed from many undead like ragged capes. A wet misma of briny rot filled the air as Zombies emerged from from the water, like noxious gas bubbling the surface of a mire.
Clay jumped from the pier, landing into the prow of a harboring vessel. A heaving swing severed the head of a corpse clawing its way up the anchor chain, sending the decapitated remains tumbling back into foggy depths. “Hello everyone.” Clay said to the crew of the vessel he’d just boarded from above, “might want to find some cover.”
If Mrs. Gao was here right now, Bobbi had no doubts she would rethink her business ventures. Finney Docks was, on paper, a great place for renting houseboats, especially if you have too many and none of which you’re actually interested in. The old woman’s late husband was the one with all the zest when it came to houseboats that it almost seemed an obsession. When he passed away, Mrs. Gao could not find it in her to dispose of them all, whether by sinking or selling them. So here we are.
“Here we fucking are indeed.” Bobbi scowled as she swiftly sliced the head off of a misguided zombie that tried to come near her, using only a cutlass that had been one of her favorite weapons. Back in the good old days, which was of course decades ago, perhaps even a century or two, the huxian, who intentionally lost her tails to pursue a life of adventure and some would say villainy, became a master of the cutlass. Considering she could actually shock a private’s privates off, it should have been more of an accessory, but there was something about the weapon, how it felt in her hands, how graceful she was with it, that it became her more favored tool to get things done. “What perfect timing… Just when the boys are passed-out drunk.”
Two more charged at her, all looking like terrible extras from the second Pirates of the Caribbean movie. Or was it the third? Come to think of it, Davy Squidward Jones appeared in more than two movies, right? These thoughts filled Bobbi’s head as she gracefully stepped back, made three swings at the first charger that sent it back down into the sea, and basically did the same routine with the other. All she needed now was a pistol and a hat. Maybe a strange gait, almost drunken when in fact still sober. From the corner of her eyes, she saw someone, or was it something, fly aboard another ship, one that she herself was not familiar with. Did someone illegally park their boat again? She didn’t have much time to linger on the mysterious boats and its mysterious occupants, especially that strange man who hopefully didn’t fly down from the skies, as three more of the undersea-mutated corpses began to crowd her. “What is it that they like to say? Dead men tell no tales? Seems very fitting against someone with no tails.”
“Hello ma’am.” Boots slammed on the deck as a sodden figure covered in black ichor hefted his way up and over the railing. Clay dropped to his stomach as a dead man wearing the tattered beige of a World War Royal Navy jacket swung a rusted pipe into the railing the Hunter once occupied. A deceased woman in the blue fleet uniform and ushanka of the USSR used the opening to tackle Clay, the fleet pilot’s rotten jaws opening to dribble seawater and dark spittle on the Slayer’s face as she bore down on him.
“Nice…uh cutlass where'd .,.ugh..you get it,” Clay gagged as he tucked his knees up to his chest and slammed his feet into the chest of the Zombie trying to mail him, sending the dead Soviet pilot careening into one of corpses assaulting Bobbi.
“Ma’am?” Bobbi timed a step back, allowing the dead Soviet pilot to crash into one of her attackers. The forceful momentum sent them both back into the water, first colliding against the hard hull of another nearby ship. The huxian scowled as she spun around to her left, gracefully evading one of the remaining two brainless husks of decaying flesh as it tried to attack her, before swiftly kicking it towards the other, sending both of them back into the water as well.
“How dare you? I don’t look a day over…” She almost slipped but immediately caught herself. Revealing how old she truly was would surprise the human, though she wasn’t sure if he was indeed just a normal human. His abilities and calm demeanor towards the attacking dead would suggest otherwise, but Bobbi has learned from the lessons of her past and maintained that revealing the truth about her would only lead to more problems than it was worth. “...twenty five.”
The dreary atmosphere in combination with her mood almost made her explain plainly the origins of her most favored weapon. But then she remembered something that the boys always loved to retort, and that made her smirk. Let me just… Before that, however, Bobbi spotted another disgusting ship stealer making its way towards her, so in one fluid motion, she charged towards it with a dropkick from out of nowhere, forcing it back into the fog, whatever was inside it, and then performing a kip-up without much effort. When she turned to him with that same smirk, she was already back to her feet. “...yo momma.”
Stillness had settled over the deck as the unliving things lay in piles of bisected bodies and severed limbs. Clay’s shoulders rose and fell with exerted respiration, gory machete held at the ready as he reached out his Slayer sense to more oily pulses of undeath. But the only pinpricks at the edge of his consciousness were far at sea. The last remaining signal of undeath was falling away down away from him after the definitely twenty-something captain of the vessel did a drop-kick that sent it over the side.
Ok, fine, that was a cool move. Game must acknowledge game.
Clay’s bruised features bloomed into a grudging grin through the grime, the quip about his momma teasing out a huffing chuckle. “Ok i’ll admit Captain,” he laughed softly, looking around at the bodies littering the deck. “That was pretty badass.”

26/08/2022-Lakeside and home
I got some brilliant views of a Migrant Hawker dragonfly beside Concorde lake on my lunch time walk at Lakeside, it was thrilling as I saw it fly and hover in the air, making out in my binoculars its striking blue markings. A precious moment with a species I really enjoy seeing here. I saw another dragonfly earlier in the walk along the northern path, I believe a Southern Hawker. It was great to see someone I hadn’t before and chat to them about dragon/damselflies and being outside generally on my lunch time walk.
A beautiful leaf beetle Alder Leaf beetle I believe which I liked finding also beside Concorde lake I have enjoyed discovering this one and leaf beetles generally this year at Lakeside and elsewhere as well as a decent few Small White butterflies flitting around were other insect highlights at Lakeside today with a white butterfly I believe Small White seen well on the buddleia bush out the front at home today. I really liked seeing a delightful Orange Swift moth flying around the living room tonight. One I had seen before downstairs in 2020 one of my favourite moths for its rich brown colour and quirky shape. It was really nice to see another I saw one flying about last night briefly which may have been this one too, my thirty fourth identified moth species of the year making my year list my highest ever something I am pleased with (albeit I only started doing moth year lists again last year after doing it a few times in the early 2010s and not seeing beyond double figures when I didn’t know many moths or “do” moths so much so it was only one past list to beat but I’ve been ahead of it with how many I had seen on the dates this year for a while). I saw it on 24th August in 2020 its funny how I am seeing similar wildlife at this time of year to 2020 what with the flycatchers and now this.
Fleabane, cuckoo pint still going well by the road entrance in the south east of the site, viper’s-bugloss, great willowherb, lovely carrot I believe, mallow and ragwort were key flowers seen on my lunch time and evening Lakeside walks today.
Bird wise I was very pleased to see a Spotted Flycatcher again in a tree south of Kornwestheim lake after seeing them last night, I got a cracking view of one in the sun. Its a pleasure to see these birds so close to home. Chiffchaffs are a regular at Lakeside lately I saw one today again which was nice. It was great to get lovely views of Starlings and House Sparrow north of the bowl at lunch time with Starlings eating blackberries in the big hedge that surrounds the bowl. It was nice to see a Starling in natural settings eating natural food a species so synonymous with garden birds for me. I saw House Sparrows nicely at home today too I took the first picture in this photoset of some on the bird table in the back garden. It was nice to see a Black-headed Gull sat on some wood in Concorde lake which I saw last night a memorable sight I took the second picture in this photoset of it and I got some great views of a Lesser Black-backed Gull on a buoy on beach lake tonight which I took the eighth picture in this photoset of. Two adult Great Crested Grebes including one preening on Concorde lake which I took the third picture in this photoset of its always great to see their white bellies and both looked great in the sun and a lovely group of Mallards on a fishing jetty shining in the bright and powerful evening light completed the avian highlights today.
I took in some stunning views today with lots of lovely sunshine. This looked great at lunch time, I took the fourth and fifth pictures in this photoset of views at Lakeside at lunch time, and on the evening walk the sun bounced off green and other bits of vegetation in such a nice way I took the sixth and seventh pictures in this photoset of views here tonight. I took the final two pictures in this photoset of nice views out the back at home this evening looking nice in the sun with interesting cloud formations which its been a good day for too. As we go towards autumn my favourite colour red comes into the landscape now and I enjoyed firethorn berries in the front garden and at Lakeside and rose hips at home and other berries at Lakeside looking great today. I liked seeing yellow leaves on the ground tonight, some of the “false autumn” leaves blown off. It struck me at lunch time when stood beside the lakes just how low the water level it. I hope you all have a nice weekend.
Wildlife Sightings Summary: One of my favourite birds the Great Crested Grebe, one of my favourite dragonflies the Southern Hawker I believe, Mallard, I seem to recall Moorhen, I believe it was last night or may have been sometime else this week I have been to the same areas of Lakeside a lot I heard a Moorhen making a splash I believe it was in the later evening walk last night as it stood out in the quiet calm of the evening, today I also saw Black-headed Gull, Lesser Black-backed Gull, Woodpigeon seen well at Lakeside today, Collared Dove, Feral Pigeon, Starling, House Sparrow, Small White, Meadow Brown butterfly, Migrant Hawker, Alder Leaf beetle and a spider seen well at home tonight.

Hi, Mx Nascosta, I've been following you for a long while now and I really admire you as a writer and now as a published author. I'm currently editing my own paranormal book and I'm looking to get a headstart on marketing with social media. So far, I've been building a following on Twitter, but I was wondering if you had any tips or could share what you've been doing? Thank you!
Network, participate, make friends — rinse and repeat, rinse and repeat. Becoming involved in a community is the quickest way to gain a foothold within said community. Social media is definitely a case study in reaping what you sow, effort-wise. Beyond that, don’t spread yourself so thin that you’re not able to make an organic impact.
I’ll use myself as an example: I have the best interactions with people here on Tumblr. This is the kindest social media platform for creators, I’ll fight anyone who claims differently. There are no funky algorithms, no blue check-marks, no influencers. The ability to engage directly with readers has been a gift over the past year and a half. I’ve put the most into this platform, between my masterlist (I posted content every single week during the first year of my blog, until I got sick,) the Monster Matches, my askbox, etc — and as a result, you guys have been wonderfully supportive, and I can’t thank this community enough.
The other platform I give my time to is Instagram (and I would really, super-duper love it if you guys followed me there as well!) My IG is only about a year old and it’s only in the last 6 months or so that I’ve been posting on it regularly. I followed a BUNCH of people--other writers, book bloggers, publishing houses, merch shops, etc--and I interacted on their posts, reblogged in my stories, etc. The more I shared and commented, the more other accounts interacted with my content and stories. I still don’t have a ton of followers there (like less than 500) but the engagement with other authors and bloggers and my patrons has been consistent, which makes up for the lack of reach. As a result, 50% of my ARC team came from IG and I’m still reaping the benefits of word-of-mouth within that community even though GW is almost 2 months old at this point.
(And just to change gears for a hot second...reach is important, obviously. That’s why it’s important to reblog vesus liking creator posts, but follower count isn’t everything and it’s folly to get too wrapped up in it. I have less than half the followers of some other writers in the Tumblr sphere, but quality engagement is what’s more important for me, and has had the biggest impact on the reach of my work. Don’t ever let yourself get too caught up in the follow counts and notes on posts. Find your tribe, the people who are passionate about the story you’re telling, and the numbers will follow!)
I put very little into Twitter and virtually nothing into FB, and as a result, I get very little back in return.
I’m going to write a post later this week about my learns in the wake of Girls Weekend, I’ll tag you in it, if you’d like! (I’m going to be posting Alder the Ghillie Dhue’s revisit in the next day or so and polishing that up is my first priority before I work on anything else... @tmnt-bucklover, I hope you really love Cambric Creek, because this is less of a “monster match revisit” and more of a “these characters are a permanent part of the community now, so get used to it” story.)
I will say this—Girls Weekend is almost 2 months old at this point, still technically a “new release” but also an old dinosaur in the world of Amazon publishing. As of today, it’s still in the top 100 of three different genre categories, I’ve sold copies every single day since release, I’ve sold out of book boxes twice, and I’ve not spent a single penny on advertising. It’s 100% because of the work I put into building relationships and readers in the community here and on IG—that means all of you guys—and my wonderful patrons. I would love to be able to tell you it wasn’t work, but that would be a *tremendous* lie. It causes my heart an ENORMOUS amount of joy to hear you’re already thinking ahead on that angle of publishing. One thing to keep in mind: you’re not on anyone’s timetable but your own if you’re publishing independently. You only get one release per book. Even if you’re done, even if you’re edited and formatted with a killer cover and you’ve worked on your blurb and are SO READY to publish...give yourself the time to do it right. If you make mistakes--and you will--good news: you can learn from them and do things differently with the next one. But there’s no one holding a clock to you, so if you feel like you want to work on building your community first, you have the latitude to do so.
Talk about your book, talk about your characters, be your own biggest fan. Your passion will attract the passion of others. And I’ve said this before, but I will repeat it a hundred thousand times—you guys can ALWAYS tag me on stuff you’d like boosted. I don't have the biggest platform, but it’s a damned good one with awesome followers and readers. Whether that’s a story, an announcement, artwork, cover reveals, contests—use me! I’m a free resource!
💖💖💖

tears on an alder frame
“Open your present, Clara!”
“Alright...”
The package in front of me, delicately wrapped in golden paper decked with glitter and tied with a pretty bow, held a hefty weight as I balanced it in my hands. With their eyes looking intently I unwrapped the gift to see a photo frame of all my friends I’ve ever made at Hogwarts--all their brilliant smiles beaming in the light, preserved behind plexiglass framed in a square of wood.
“We took this before everyone left for the Christmas holidays.”
“The frame is made from an alder tree grown on my parent’s farm.”
“Do you like it?”
“I love it. Thank you so much. All of you. I don’t know what to say...”
I wish I did know what to say.
Sitting alone now in the courtyard at night, the cold winter wind blowing harshly around the hem of my robes, I wrapped Rowan’s scarf tighter around my neck and glanced at the frame given to me just two years ago--a wonderful Christmas celebrated in our fifth year together at Hogwarts. It was hard to believe now that everyone had grown up--well, almost everyone. In the midst of all that threw us off-balance, we lost one in a major catastrophe. How we even managed to get back on the road again is still beyond me.
Everything I did, I owed it to my friends. They were the reason I stood here today, with all these trinkets decorating my dorm, all these memorabilia that reminded me of the fun times we had together. Yet somehow this one, this one took the cake. The alder wood framing a moment in time, so fleeting, and now gone forever.
Just like Rowan.
I spotted her now at the front of the picture, a huge smile on her face. She was wearing the same scarf I wore now, the scarf that I recommended she’d buy to let everyone know she’s a serious intellectual on her way to becoming Head Girl. So happy, so carefree--that was what everyone was. There was no sign of a storm brewing above our heads then. There was no sign of a war looming ahead. Just them, a camera, and a strong bond that brought the smiles to their faces.
“Rowan...”
My fingertips rested on her face, tears brimming in my eyes yet again--I wiped them away roughly with the sleeves of my robes, but they kept coming, burning and blurring my vision. It was here where I thought I saw my tree twin again. It was here where I found her scarf lying by the ledge.
It was here where I felt closest to her.
And yet, it was so hard to believe that this would be the first Christmas I would celebrate without her by my side. No one would wake me up in the dorm with a running start and jump onto my bed in fits of laughter. No one would ever play wizard’s chess the same way she did, or relay unique Christmas experiences on the tree farm to me, or just hang out with in the Gryffindor Common Room late at night after a delightful Christmas Feast. All the things I wish I had said...there were still so many things. The words tasted like bile at the back of my throat. Why couldn’t I say them before?
“Clara?”
A soft voice called out to me now--I turned to see my sister approach me yet again, two mugs of hot chocolate in hand. As she sat with me by the fountain’s edge, she caught sight of the frame I still held in my hands and frowned. “Was this...”
“The frame was made from Rowan’s tree farm,” I told her. “But yes, this was a picture of all my friends. It was taken two years ago.”
“I see.” Little Em placed a mug beside me while she sipped from her own.
“How was I such an idiot back then,” I muttered. “When I got this--I’ll admit, I was speechless, but...I wish I had said something. I wish they knew how much this truly meant to me. How, in the wake of the threat that came to pass, I truly appreciated their support more than ever--but especially--I just--”
I placed the frame down and buried my sight into my scarf, squeezing my eyes tight against the woollen stitches. “I just wish she knew! I...she...”
The choked sobs did not go unnoticed--little Em just took my arm and hugged it tight while I cried, curling into a ball. Everyone’s constantly told me to move on, but this was to be the first Christmas without my tree twin--how could I live with that when the reminder of the best gift I got, with something of hers tying everyone together, lingers in my mind?
“Rowan was the one who brought everyone together. The Circle of Khanna would not have been if not for the impact she left on everyone,” little Em reminded me softly. “She lives in all of us, Clara. I know it’s hard to believe it in times like these, but...she’s still here. You remember when her memory visited you once here?”
“She said she would always be with me, but--”
“Clara. Look at me.”
I lifted my gaze from the scarf and looked at my sister, her gaze blazing with determination.
“You were victorious in the war of the Cursed Vaults because everyone put their hearts together for Rowan. She united all of you in some way. You’ve done more than words could ever say to honour her,” little Em said firmly. “And I’m not sure how many people have told you this before, but...she loved you more than anything in this world. And she knew you did too. So keep this close to you, Clara. Let this be a reminder of the person who you all fought to honour, who brought you all closer together. She wants to see you succeed in everything you do. And she wants to see you have a good Christmas, at the very least. Can you do that for her?”
“How did you become so wise?”
“Let’s just say I had some help from someone who knows us well.”
I let slip a watery smile then and nodded. “I should have known Jacob would come around to give you sage advice.”
“Hey. At least he does care about us from time to time. Now come on, it’s freezing out here. I’d rather sit by a warm fireplace and have our cocoa, would you?”
I nodded again as we took our things and headed inside. Clutching the frame close to my chest, I whispered a silent prayer to the skies.
Rowan, wherever you are...I’m thinking of you this Christmas. And I always will in everything.

Hey so obviously we haven’t seen Khalida healthy before this last episode so we don’t know how she normally behaves but from what we’ve seen of her since waking up seems pretty intense and stiff for a young kid. Any fun theories on what’s up with her? Is she just that way, was she changed by the sickness, was she possessed by the mushroom wall thing, or something else entirely? I know we don’t really have enough just yet to theorize much but was curious to see if she stood out as weird to you
She definitely made me start to shift in my seat a little, the regality and her emotionless tone felt strangely eerie to me. I believe she’s important to the Tarim, my best guess is something of a “keeper of knowledge” for them. The name Khalida means immortal, which I think is an important clue to the fact that she could be Alder’s foil. In the way that Alder steals the youth of others to remain alive, she simply lives in her youth and never ages. Obviously these are all guesses because we haven’t seen much of her but I’m fairly certain she’s not human. The question becomes, what is she? Is she a spirit that possesses the bodies of young children? Does she stay as a child infinitely? Was she just born wise beyond her years?
Here’s an interesting comparison I made, of her and a few other children who have been possessed with endless knowledge. Their expressions are so similar I’d almost bet that somehow Khalida is a keeper of wisdom.

Ogham Runes
1. A – Ailim
Tree: Elm
Symbolism: Ailim Correspondences
Mundane Aspects: When this symbol appears, it means it's time to start looking at the big picture; see the trees, but also acknowledge the forest. Be aware that your perception includes long-term goals and ideas, and prepare for what may be coming along the path.
Magical Aspects: Mark your progress well as you grow and develop spiritually. As you attain new levels of wisdom, look at the future and see where this new knowledge will take you. Also recognize that there will be others following in your footsteps, so make yourself available to guide them and give them a hand when they need it.
2. O – Onn
Tree: Gorse Bush/Furze
Symbolism:
Ohn Correspondences
Mundane Aspects: Whatever you've been looking for is right around the corner–keep pursuing your goals, because they are within your reach. If you aren't sure what path you should be on or which direction you should head, sit down and make a list of goals. Figure out the destination, and then you'll be able to focus on the journey.
Magical Aspects: Your spiritual journey has provided you with an abundance of gifts. Don't keep these blessings to yourself–share them with others! If you've been asked to take on a role as leader or mentor, now is the time to do so.
3. U – Uhr
Tree: Heather Plant
Symbolism:
Uhr Correspondences
Mundane Aspects: When this symbol appears, it means it's time to de-stress. Look inside yourself for healing if your body needs it, and don't delay. Listen to what your physical self is telling you. Remember how closely our physical well-being and emotional health are tied together.
Magical Aspects: Blend the energy of the spirit with the healing of the body. Focus on whole healing–body, mind and spirit–to build a healthy soul. Eadhadh Correspondences
Mundane Aspects: Like the Aspen, you can be flexible without snapping. No matter what obstacles come, allow yourself to know that these too will be gone eventually. You will be left stronger for the experience, if you can get over your fears and reservations.
Magical Aspects: Don't give in to the pressures of the material world. Focus instead on your spiritual journey, even if it seems like it would be a lot easier to give up and let things fall by the wayside. Even in the Tarot, the Fool knows he has a long way to go, but the first step is the hardest. When Eadhadh appears, put aside your distractions, and take that first all-important step on your journey.

Now's a good time to get rid of things which are of no use to you, in order to make room for new beginnings.
Magical Aspects: Changes are on the way, so quit clinging to beliefs and ideas that no longer serve you well. Shed the old, and welcome the new. Accept change for what it is–an asset–and stop seeing it as an obstacle. Don't fear new things, embrace them.

Tree- Birch
Symbolism: New Beginings, change, release, rebirth
Beith Correspondences
Mundane Aspects: When this symbol appears, it means it's time to get rid of all those negative influences you've been carrying around with you. Instead of being dragged down by the negative, focus on the positive things you have in your life, the blessings and abundance. Use these things as a focus, rather than the harmful or damaging ones.
Magical Aspects: Consider the property of renewal and rebirth, as demonstrated by the Birch. Use this as a tool for spiritual and emotional regrowth and developing your own ability to regenerate where there has been emptiness or devastation.

bart simpson -
house: gryffindor
wand: beech, dragon core, 12 1/2 in, reasonably supple
The true match for a beech wand will be, if young, wise beyond his or her years, and if full-grown, rich in understanding and experience. Beech wands perform very weakly for the narrow-minded and intolerant. Such wizards and witches, having obtained a beech wand without having been suitably matched (yet coveting this most desirable, richly hued and highly prized wand wood), have often presented themselves at the homes of learned wandmakers such as myself, demanding to know the reason for their handsome wand’s lack of power. When properly matched, the beech wand is capable of a subtlety and artistry rarely seen in any other wood, hence its lustrous reputation.
As a rule, dragon heartstrings produce wands with the most power, and which are capable of the most flamboyant spells. Dragon wands tend to learn more quickly than other types. While they can change allegiance if won from their original master, they always bond strongly with the current owner.
The dragon wand tends to be easiest to turn to the Dark Arts, though it will not incline that way of its own accord. It is also the most prone of the three cores to accidents, being somewhat temperamental. - garrick ollivander
patronus: dragon (very rare) (i was hoping for greyhound, obviously!)
One of the most powerful and formidable creatures of the magical world, dragons are ambitious and dominant. With the ability to breathe fire, they quickly assert themselves, garnering both fear and respect from those around them. They are unafraid to take risks and prefer to live by their own set of rules. They are quick to lead and do not back down from a challenge. Dragons are strong in their convictions and will stand for what they believe is right. Those with a dragon for a Patronus are sure to be fierce fighters, and the Dementors better be ready for a challenge! - mugglenet
lisa simpson -
house: ravenclaw
wand: alder, unicorn core, 10 in, hard
Alder is an unyielding wood, yet I have discovered that its ideal owner is not stubborn or obstinate, but often helpful, considerate and most likeable.
They are the most faithful of all wands, and usually remain strongly attached to their first owner, irrespective of whether he or she was an accomplished witch or wizard.
Minor disadvantages of unicorn hair are that they do not make the most powerful wands (although the wand wood may compensate) and that they are prone to melancholy if seriously mishandled, meaning that the hair may ‘die’ and need replacing. - garrick ollivander
patronus: doe (unusual) (a horse would have been great, but this is weirdly suitable too)
As the Patronus of Severus Snape and Lily Potter, the doe is fiercely protective of its loved ones, as displayed through its caring and nurturing nature. The doe is also representative of gentleness yet strong determination, and with its high level of intuition and sensitivity, it battles life’s challenges with the utmost grace and vigilance. - mugglenet
Those with the patronus of the deer, specifically, the doe are gentle and observant.
You’re often patient and quiet. However, those with this patronus do have a tendency to be flighty, nervous and are often on the back foot in confrontation.
Nevertheless, those with this patronus have an uncanny ability to observe and understand the world around them. - patronusmeaning.tumblr.com

Wand Woods: Hogwarts verse
Cas: Cypress
Cypress wands are associated with nobility. The great medieval wandmaker, Geraint Ollivander, wrote that he was always honoured to match a cypress wand, for he knew he was meeting a witch or wizard who would die a heroic death. Fortunately, in these less blood-thirsty times, the possessors of cypress wands are rarely called upon to lay down their lives, though doubtless many of them would do so if required. Wands of cypress find their soul mates among the brave, the bold and the self-sacrificing: those who are unafraid to confront the shadows in their own and others’ natures.
Celia Rae: Alder
Alder is an unyielding wood, yet I have discovered that its ideal owner is not stubborn or obstinate, but often helpful, considerate and most likeable.
Elise: Beech
Rowan: Holly
Holly is one of the rarer kinds of wand woods; traditionally considered protective, it works most happily for those who may need help overcoming a tendency to anger and impetuosity. At the same time, holly wands often choose owners who are engaged in some dangerous and often spiritual quest. Holly is one of those woods that varies most dramatically in performance depending on the wand core, and it is a notoriously difficult wood to team with phoenix feather, as the wood’s volatility conflicts strangely with the phoenix’s detachment. In the unusual event of such a pairing finding its ideal match, however, nothing and nobody should stand in their way.

About Rose
I’m not sure if I already have one of these, and I can’t find a template to make one, so I’m just gonna shoot my shot and do my best here.
Full name: Rosaline Pearl Sirena Draconus Durant
Time and place of birth: Wednesday, April 1st, 1992 at 3:01am (the witching hour) in the Touro Infirmary Hospital of New Orleans, Louisiana.
Zodiac: Aries sun (fire), Pisces moon (water), Aquarius rising/ascendant (air). Pisces, Aquarius, and Capricorn (earth) dominate her natal chart. Monkey (water). Alder tree. Red hawk/falcon.
Species explanation and list: Came about through ritual as well as conception originally; her soul collects more species each time she’s born (reincarnated) to non-human souls. Her soul is fragmented, there are more Roses throughout the world of different names. She only inherits certain traits from each species. She is predominantly draconic, sirenic, and succubic. Rose also has some wolf/lycanthrope, vampire (tribrid - blood, energy, and sexual separate from the succubus), banshee, Valkyrie (last life as one), Amazonian, basilisk (possibly only for this life), fairy, human, and possibly more - she doesn’t know everything just yet. Without feeding, her abilities become even more drastically limited.
Characteristics: Abilities may begin in childhood, but Rose’s memories don’t begin to resurface until teenhood and young adulthood. She may also repress her memories, furthering the process, in attempts at normalcy. Jack of all trades. Artist, but not in the layman usage of the word - dancer, singer, creative writer, musician. STEM major, always good at STEM. Linguaphile; often multilingual. Current fluencies: English and French, with some German, Spanish, Latin, Greek, Korean, and Russian. Much of her interest in languages and ability to learn them rapidly stems from former lives. Very pensive and philosophic, a stoic in the regular sense of the word but an existentialist in practice.

Communication with entities beyond the veil despite her attempts to shut them out. Astral projection.
More abilities and characteristics, positive and negative, by species:
1. Dragon: old soul/wise beyond her years, increased intelligence, heightened senses, increased empathy and strength, stronger persuasion via a golden tongue, foresight or future-delving. Manipulation, word twisting, speaking in riddles. Strong debater. Bloodthirsty. Intensely greedy. Power hungry. Delusions of grandeur. Arrogant. Pansexual. Extroverted. Stubborn and/or hard-headed. So cold you’d bet she’s anemic. Close-minded. TOO LOUD. She wants your heart, but on a GOLDEN platter; she’ll never love you. You are so beneath her, who the fuck do you think you are? Enemy of the siren. Fiercely loyal to those who have earned it. Family is the most important thing. Money can buy happiness, and it has for her. Warmest smile. Tacky bitch. Really good at Words with Friends, Scrabble, fighting you, chess. Wants you to succeed in life, and gives you unsolicited advice on how to do it all the time. Annoying. Always has an upset tummy. Does she have IBS? Beyond the veil: red with orange eyes. Your typical bigass crimson red dragon, will breathe fire on you. Her kind is less prevalent than they once were.
2. Siren: leads people astray readily. Seduction. Outright deception. Enticement and intimidation via a silver tongue. Increased strength and agility. Strong swimmer. Telepathy with other sirens. Enemy of the dragon. Brutal bitch. Savage, almost feral at times. Ambivert. Manipulative. Intensely maternal. Your mom friend to the extreme. Loving. Pansexual. Invasive. Monster. Might eat your liver in the pool. Always too hot. God, that voice, let’s hope you never hear it. Opera. SUSHI!!!!. Friendly, communal even, but only with those she considers family. Too good for pop music unless it’s Ariana Grande; increased hearing, gets audio overload at any normal volume. Subtitles, please. Can’t fucking understand English to save her life. Will teach you sirenic, but you can’t speak it. Whistle notes. LOWER YOUR FUCKING VOICE. Half-naked, huge tits. Firm hugger. Beyond the veil: ugly ass deep sea thing you never want to see, but her Venetian red tail is pretty... Second, translucent eyelid. Sirens of the sea are populating as rampantly as always, given the content of the earth which is saltwater. Avoids all of her kind to protect one she loves.
-Unpopular with both dragons and sirens due to some old war. These two species are most dominant.
3. Succubus: a touch that can manipulate, seduce, control, compel. Feeding, starving. Glamour. Conceited. Preppy bitch. Sarcastic. A gaslighter. Manipulative. Extroverted. PANSEXUAL, literally doesn’t care, will fuck you, don’t let her. Fake. Craves you. Enemy of the siren. She’s that overly sexual friend where you can never really tell whether they’re kidding or really trying something with you, you know? She’ll never tell, either. Got that?? Fear her. Run; she will definitely fuck your brains out and fucking eat you, God she’s fucking starving. RUN. Don’t give her a drink, and so help you if she gets to three or more. There is no God; God is dead, she has killed him, she drained his chi. RUN AWAY: fucking demonic. Don’t let her in. She made sure no one is here to help. Don’t look at them. They won’t help you; they’re under her control. You will be too. Beyond the veil: Horns. Tail. Wings. Greyish-purple all over, even her eyes; looks like a gargoyle. She doesn’t eat enough to pigment, and who cares? Glamour will make her perfect anyway. Finds feeding unethical. Slip-ups happen, though; I’m coming for you.
4. Wolf: increased agility, strength, and durability. Heightened stamina, senes. Increased stamina. Fast healing. Telepathy with other wolves. FIERCELY loyal. Respectful. Hungry. Bloodthirsty. Feral. Beast. Aching in her soul and bones. Titanium. Sushi. Friendly and communal all the time. Pansexual. Major ambivert. Audio overload too. Will cry if someone raises their voice from across a room. You’re too boomy. Stop that. Will kill anyone who makes you shed a tear. Don’t let her. Specifically tell her not to while you are crying. She will do it, I swear. Alpha bitch. Beyond the veil: albino Eurasian wolf, mistaken for an Arctic wolf. Icy grey eyes. Her kind is dead; those eyes show it. What’s an alpha without a pack? Heartbroken.
5. Valkyrie: Literally wishing to death, has to stop herself from it because it’s so easy. Planting doubt in the minds of the steadfast and resolute. Asexual. Will give you hallucinations. Manipulative. Spooky bitch. Might want you dead, might not. Don’t cross her or she’ll imagine you to eternal slumber. You won’t be in Valhalla, either.
6. Amazonian: Increased strength. Tracker. Skilled with weapons. Will navigate. Misandry. Lesbian. Introverted. Feminist bitch. Will stab you.
7. Banshee: Future-delving. A screech that will drive you mad and physically harm you only when members of inhuman royalty are dying. Introvert. Asexual. Beyond the veil: Blind as a bat, deaf as a white cat. Only sees the astral world in her head. Just looks like herself minus the white eyes. Only brought out by screaming, and terrified the entire time, but can remain after. Will cough or vomit blood for a while after screaming. Can’t control it. Scared bitch. Voice may not return to normal for weeks. Enemy of the siren. Prefers to, and sometimes must remain after screaming, mute. Cannot sign. Can see and feel your energy.
8. Basilisk: Increased ability to intimidate. Muted. Affinity for reptiles. No other abilities or notable change. Beyond the veil: she cannot turn into the giant snake of lore, nor turn to stone. If looks could kill, she would just kinda spook you. Literally just herself. Angry bitch.
9. Fairy: No increased abilities but she’s cuter and has more of a sweet tooth. Vocal change to higher pitch. Please give her Jaffa cakes, hot tea, and head pats. Beyond the veil: a tiny, wingless fairy of greens, golds, and purples. Don’t let the look fool you. Evil bitch.
10. Vampire: Increased sense of hearing and smell. Bloodlust. Ability to compel. Seduction. Extrovert. Clean freak. If there's no blood on her, it's like she never did it. Feeds on the environment around her, including people, naturally. Constantly tries to keep that shut off. Wants very badly to eat you. Hungry bitch.
Sometimes she wakes up a certain species, sometimes situations or location bring them out. Sometimes the need to feed or emotions will cause certain species to rush to forefront. This is akin to having different personalities, but it’s all her.

Dark red blooms
Dany and Bran book parallels - part 13
1) Burning rose and magic rose.
Bran is trying to convince Maester Luwin of the resurgence of magic, but Luwin contests the claim by saying what may look like real magic is a trick, like pulling rose out of air. When Dany’s bloodrider calls the fiery ladder magic a trick, Quaithe says it is not a trick put real power increasing due to Dany becoming Mother of dragons. Earlier mage was able to do only simple tricks like creating a burning rose in the air. Bran also tries to point out to Luwin the events in the east like magic of mages that Dany encounters. Luwin says that residual magic left in the world is weak like wisps of smoke and Dany witnesses wisps of smoke after the magic is performed.
When the fiery ladder stood forty feet high, the mage leapt forward and began to climb it, scrambling up hand over hand as quick as a monkey. Each rung he touched dissolved behind him, leaving no more than a wisp of silver smoke. When he reached the top, the ladder was gone and so was he. "A fine trick," announced Jhogo with admiration. "No trick," a woman said in the Common Tongue. Dany had not noticed Quaithe in the crowd, yet there she stood, eyes wet and shiny behind the implacable red lacquer mask. "What mean you, my lady?" "Half a year gone, that man could scarcely wake fire from dragonglass. He had some small skill with powders and wildfire, sufficient to entrance a crowd while his cutpurses did their work. He could walk across hot coals and make burning roses bloom in the air, but he could no more aspire to climb the fiery ladder than a common fisherman could hope to catch a kraken in his nets." Dany looked uneasily at where the ladder had stood. Even the smoke was gone now, and the crowd was breaking up, each man going about his business. In a moment more than a few would find their purses flat and empty. "And now?" "And now his powers grow, Khaleesi. And you are the cause of it." "Me?" She laughed. "How could that be?" The woman stepped closer and lay two fingers on Dany's wrist. "You are the Mother of Dragons, are you not?"( A Clash of Kings - Daenerys III)
"All those who study the higher mysteries try their own hand at spells, soon or late. I yielded to the temptation too, I must confess it. Well, I was a boy, and what boy does not secretly wish to find hidden powers in himself? I got no more for my efforts than a thousand boys before me, and a thousand since. Sad to say, magic does not work." "Sometimes it does," Bran protested. "I had that dream, and Rickon did too. And there are mages and warlocks in the east . . ." "There are men who call themselves mages and warlocks," Maester Luwin said. "I had a friend at the Citadel who could pull a rose out of your ear, but he was no more magical than I was. Oh, to be sure, there is much we do not understand. The years pass in their hundreds and their thousands, and what does any man see of life but a few summers, a few winters? We look at mountains and call them eternal, and so they seem . . . but in the course of time, mountains rise and fall, rivers change their courses, stars fall from the sky, and great cities sink beneath the sea. Even gods die, we think. Everything changes. "Perhaps magic was once a mighty force in the world, but no longer. What little remains is no more than the wisp of smoke that lingers in the air after a great fire has burned out, and even that is fading. Valyria was the last ember, and Valyria is gone. The dragons are no more, the giants are dead, the children of the forest forgotten with all their lore.( A Clash of Kings - Bran IV)
2) Flowers blooming in Dothraki sea and King’s Landing - dark red flowers & dark red blooms of dragon’s breath.
“The Dothraki sea,” Ser Jorah Mormont said as he reined to a halt beside her on the top of the ridge. Beneath them, the plain stretched out immense and empty, a vast flat expanse that reached to the distant horizon and beyond. It was a sea, Dany thought. Past here, there were no hills, no mountains, no trees nor cities nor roads, only the endless grasses, the tall blades rippling like waves when the winds blew. “It’s so green,” she said.“Here and now,” Ser Jorah agreed. “You ought to see it when it blooms, all dark red flowers from horizon to horizon, like a sea of blood. Come the dry season, and the world turns the color of old bronze. And this is only hranna, child. There are a hundred kinds of grass out there, grasses as yellow as lemon and as dark as indigo, blue grasses and orange grasses and grasses like rainbows. Down in the Shadow Lands beyond Asshai, they say there are oceans of ghost grass, taller than a man on horseback with stalks as pale as milkglass. It murders all other grass and glows in the dark with the spirits of the damned. The Dothraki claim that someday ghost grass will cover the entire world, and then all life will end." That thought gave Dany the shivers. "I don't want to talk about that now," she said. "It's so beautiful here, I don't want to think about everything dying." (A Game of Thrones - Daenerys III)
The night the bird had come from Winterfell, Eddard Stark had taken the girls to the castle godswood, an acre of elm and alder and black cottonwood overlooking the river. The heart tree there was a great oak, its ancient limbs overgrown with smokeberry vines; they knelt before it to offer their thanksgiving, as if it had been a weirwood. Sansa drifted to sleep as the moon rose, Arya several hours later, curling up in the grass under Ned's cloak. All through the dark hours he kept his vigil alone. When dawn broke over the city, the dark red blooms of dragon’s breath surrounded the girls where they lay. "I dreamed of Bran,” Sansa had whispered to him. “I saw him smiling.” (A Game of Thrones - Eddard V)
3) Reluctant Bride and Bridegroom - dark red veil & dark red vein.
Dany’s wedding grab is white with dark red veil and Bran has to eat white paste with dark red veins to wed himself to the trees.
The wedding garb is fraught with meaning too. The bride is dressed in dark red veils above a tokar of white silk, fringed with baby pearls. The queen of the rabbits must not be wed without her floppy ears. "All those pearls will make me rattle when I walk." "The pearls symbolize fertility. The more pearls Your Worship wears, the more healthy children she will bear." "Why would I want a hundred children?" Dany turned to the Green Grace. "If we should wed by Westerosi rites …" "The gods of Ghis would deem it no true union." Galazza Galare's face was hidden behind a veil of green silk. Only her eyes showed, green and wise and sad. "In the eyes of the city you would be the noble Hizdahr's concubine, not his lawful wedded wife. Your children would be bastards. Your Worship must marry Hizdahr in the Temple of the Graces, with all the nobility of Meereen on hand to bear witness to your union." Get the heads of all the noble houses out of their pyramids on some pretext, Daario had said. The dragon's words are fire and blood. Dany pushed the thought aside. It was not worthy of her. "As you wish," she sighed. "I shall marry Hizdahr in the Temple of the Graces wrapped in a white tokar fringed with baby pearls. Is there anything else?" ( A Dance with Dragons - Daenerys VI)
Inside was a white paste, thick and heavy, with dark red veins running through it. "You must eat of this," said Leaf. She handed Bran a wooden spoon. The boy looked at the bowl uncertainly. "What is it?" "A paste of weirwood seeds." Something about the look of it made Bran feel ill. The red veins were only weirwood sap, he supposed, but in the torchlight they looked remarkably like blood. He dipped the spoon into the paste, then hesitated. "Will this make me a greenseer?" "Your blood makes you a greenseer," said Lord Brynden. "This will help awaken your gifts and wed you to the trees." Bran did want to be married to a tree … but who else would wed a broken boy like him? ( A Dance with Dragons - Bran III)

He soon went bankrupt and by the time he was 35, he was in debt of around $36,000 across 22 credit cards. He had just over $200 dollars in his bank account and was jobless for over 2 years. Harry Potter World Basics Part 2
In this one, these are all the wand options and meanings! There will be still more parts to this guide, so I hope you can find these helpful in any way! Part one can be found here.
Wands:
(I took a lot, if not all of the information from Pottermore itself, so that you don’t have to search for it on your own. I might have edited some of the useless information out in hopes of less confusion. Hopefully these are clear enough for everyone!)
Types of wood and meanings:
Acacia: “A very unusual wand wood, which I have found creates tricky wands that often refuse to produce magic for any but their owner, and also withhold their best effects from all but those most gifted. This sensitivity renders them difficult to place, and I keep only a small stock for those witches or wizards of sufficient subtlety, for acacia is not suited to what is commonly known as ‘bangs-and-smells’ magic. When well-matched, an acacia wand matches any for power, though it is often underrated due to the peculiarity of its temperament.”
Alder: “Alder is an unyielding wood, yet I have discovered that its ideal owner is not stubborn or obstinate, but often helpful, considerate and most likeable. Of all wand types, alder is best suited to non-verbal spell work, whence comes its reputation for being suitable only for the most advanced witches and wizards.”
Apple: “Applewood wands are not made in great numbers. They are powerful and best suited to an owner of high aims and ideals, as this wood mixes poorly with Dark magic. It is said that the possessor of an apple wand will be well-loved and long-lived, and I have often noticed that customers of great personal charm find their perfect match in an applewood wand. An unusual ability to converse with other magical beings in their native tongues is often found among apple wand owners.”
Ash: “The ash wand cleaves to its one true master and ought not to be passed on or gifted from the original owner, because it will lose power and skill. This tendency is extreme if the core is of unicorn. Those witches and wizards best suited to ash wands are not, in my experience, lightly swayed from their beliefs or purposes. However, the brash or over-confident witch or wizard, who often insists on trying wands of this prestigious wood, will be disappointed by its effects. The ideal owner may be stubborn, and will certainly be courageous, but never crass or arrogant.”
Aspen: “Wand-quality aspen wood is white and fine-grained, and highly prized by all wand-makers for its stylish resemblance to ivory and its usually outstanding charmwork. The proper owner of the aspen wand is often an accomplished duellist, or destined to be so, for the aspen wand is one of those particularly suited to martial magic. In my experience, aspen wand owners are generally strong-minded and determined, more likely than most to be attracted by quests and new orders; this is a wand for revolutionaries.”
Beech: “The true match for a beech wand will be, if young, wise beyond his or her years, and if full-grown, rich in understanding and experience. When properly matched, the beech wand is capable of a subtlety and artistry rarely seen in any other wood, hence its lustrous reputation.”
Blackthorn: “Blackthorn, which is a very unusual wand wood, has the reputation, in my view well-merited, of being best suited to a warrior. This does not necessarily mean that its owner practises the Dark Arts (although it is undeniable that those who do so will enjoy the blackthorn wand’s prodigious power); one finds blackthorn wands among the Aurors as well as among the denizens of Azkaban. It is a curious feature of the blackthorn bush, which sports wicked thorns, that it produces its sweetest berries after the hardest frosts, and the wands made from this wood appear to need to pass through danger or hardship with their owners to become truly bonded. Given this condition, the blackthorn wand will become as loyal and faithful a servant as one could wish.”
Black Walnut: “Less common than the standard walnut wand, that of black walnut seeks a master of good instincts and powerful insight. Black walnut is a very handsome wood, but not the easiest to master. It has one pronounced quirk, which is that it is abnormally attuned to inner conflict, and loses power dramatically if its possessor practises any form of self-deception. If the witch or wizard is unable or unwilling to be honest with themselves or others, the wand often fails to perform adequately and must be matched with a new owner if it is to regain its former prowess. Paired with a sincere, self-aware owner, however, it becomes one of the most loyal and impressive wands of all, with a particular flair in all kinds of charmwork.”
Cedar: “Whenever I meet one who carries a cedar wand, I find strength of character and unusual loyalty. The cedar wand finds its perfect home where there is perspicacity and perception. I have never yet met the owner of a cedar wand whom I would care to cross, especially if harm is done to those of whom they are fond. The witch or wizard who is well-matched with cedar carries the potential to be a frightening adversary, which often comes as a shock to those who have thoughtlessly challenged them.”
Cherry: “This very rare wand wood creates a wand of strange power, most highly prized by the wizarding students of the school of Mahoutokoro in Japan, where those who own cherry wands have special prestige. The Western wand-purchaser should dispel from their minds any notion that the pink blossom of the living tree makes for a frivolous or merely ornamental wand, for cherry wood often makes a wand that possesses truly lethal power, whatever the core, but if teamed with dragon heartstring, the wand ought never to be teamed with a wizard without exceptional self-control and strength of mind.”
Chestnut: “This is a most curious, multi-faceted wood, which varies greatly in its character depending on the wand core, and takes a great deal of colour from the personality that possesses it. The wand of chestnut is attracted to witches and wizards who are skilled tamers of magical beasts, those who possess great gifts in Herbology, and those who are natural fliers. However, when paired with dragon heartstring, it may find its best match among those who are overfond of luxury and material things, and less scrupulous than they should be about how they are obtained. Conversely, three successive heads of the Wizengamot have possessed chestnut and unicorn wands, for this combination shows a predilection for those concerned with all manner of justice.”
Cypress: “Cypress wands are associated with nobility. Wands of cypress find their soul mates among the brave, the bold and the self-sacrificing: those who are unafraid to confront the shadows in their own and others’ natures.”
Dogwood: “Dogwood is one of my own personal favourites, and I have found that matching a dogwood wand with its ideal owner is always entertaining. Dogwood wands are quirky and mischievous; they have playful natures and insist upon partners who can provide them with scope for excitement and fun. It would be quite wrong, however, to deduce from this that dogwood wands are not capable of serious magic when called upon to do so; they have been known to perform outstanding spells under difficult conditions, and when paired with a suitably clever and ingenious witch or wizard, can produce dazzling enchantments. An interesting foible of many dogwood wands is that they refuse to perform non-verbal spells and they are often rather noisy.”
Ebony: “This jet-black wand wood has an impressive appearance and reputation, being highly suited to all manner of combative magic, and to Transfiguration. Ebony is happiest in the hand of those with the courage to be themselves. Frequently non-conformist, highly individual or comfortable with the status of outsider. In my experience the ebony wand’s perfect match is one who will hold fast to his or her beliefs, no matter what the external pressure, and will not be swayed lightly from their purpose.”
Elder: “The rarest wand wood of all, and reputed to be deeply unlucky, the elder wand is trickier to master than any other. It contains powerful magic, but scorns to remain with any owner who is not the superior of his or her company; it takes a remarkable wizard to keep the elder wand for any length of time. The truth is that only a highly unusual person will find their perfect match in elder, and on the rare occasion when such a pairing occurs, I take it as certain that the witch or wizard in question is marked out for a special destiny. An additional fact that I have unearthed during my long years of study is that the owners of elder wands almost always feel a powerful affinity with those chosen by rowan.”
Elm: “The truth is that elm wands prefer owners with presence, magical dexterity and a certain native dignity. Of all wand woods, elm, in my experience, produces the fewest accidents, the least foolish errors, and the most elegant charms and spells; these are sophisticated wands, capable of highly advanced magic in the right hands.”
English Oak: “A wand for good times and bad, this is a friend as loyal as the wizard who deserves it. Wands of English oak demand partners of strength, courage and fidelity. Less well-known is the propensity for owners of English oak wands to have powerful intuition, and, often, an affinity with the magic of the natural world, with the creatures and plants that are necessary to wizardkind for both magic and pleasure. It is said that Merlin’s wand was of English oak (though his grave has never been found, so this cannot be proven).”
Fir: “There is no doubt that this wood, coming as it does from the most resilient of trees, produces wands that demand staying power and strength of purpose in their true owners, and that they are poor tools in the hands of the changeable and indecisive. Fir wands are particularly suited to Transfiguration, and favour owners of focused, strong-minded and, occasionally, intimidating demeanour.”
Hawthorn: “ Hawthorn wands, which are complex and intriguing in their natures, just like the owners who best suit them. Hawthorn wands may be particularly suited to healing magic, but they are also adept at curses, and I have generally observed that the hawthorn wand seems most at home with a conflicted nature, or with a witch or wizard passing through a period of turmoil. Hawthorn is not easy to master, however, and I would only ever consider placing a hawthorn wand in the hands of a witch or wizard of proven talent, or the consequences might be dangerous. Hawthorn wands have a notable peculiarity: their spells can, when badly handled, backfire.”
Hazel: A sensitive wand, hazel often reflects its owner’s emotional state, and works best for a master who understands and can manage their own feelings. Others should be very careful handling a hazel wand if its owner has recently lost their temper, or suffered a serious disappointment, because the wand will absorb such energy and discharge it unpredictably. The positive aspect of a hazel wand more than makes up for such minor discomforts, however, for it is capable of outstanding magic in the hands of the skillful, and is so devoted to its owner that it often ‘wilts’ (which is to say, it expels all its magic and refuses to perform, often necessitating the extraction of the core and its insertion into another casing, if the wand is still required) at the end of its master’s life (if the core is unicorn hair, however, there is no hope; the wand will almost certainly have ‘died’). Hazel wands also have the unique ability to detect water underground, and will emit silvery, tear-shaped puffs of smoke if passing over concealed springs and wells.”
Holly: “Holly is one of the rarer kinds of wand woods; traditionally considered protective, it works most happily for those who may need help overcoming a tendency to anger and impetuosity. In the unusual event of such a pairing finding its ideal match, however, nothing and nobody should stand in their way.” Hornbeam: “My own wand is made of hornbeam, and so it is with all due modesty that I state that hornbeam selects for its life mate the talented witch or wizard with a single, pure passion, which some might call obsession (though I prefer the term ‘vision’), which will almost always be realised. Hornbeam wands adapt more quickly than almost any other to their owner’s style of magic, and will become so personalised, so quickly, that other people will find them extremely difficult to use even for the most simple of spells. Hornbeam wands likewise absorb their owner’s code of honour, whatever that might be, and will refuse to perform acts – whether for good or ill – that do not tally with their master’s principles. A particularly fine-tuned and sentient wand.” Larch: “Strong, durable and warm in colour, larch has long been valued as an attractive and powerful wand wood. Its reputation for instilling courage and confidence in the user has ensured that demand has always outstripped supply. This much sought-after wand is, however, hard to please in the matter of ideal owners, and trickier to handle than many imagine. I find that it always creates wands of hidden talents and unexpected effects, which likewise describes the master who deserves it. It is often the case that the witch or wizard who belongs to the larch wand may never realise the full extent of their considerable talents until paired with it, but that they will then make an exceptional match.” Laurel: “It is said that a laurel wand cannot perform a dishonourable act, although in the quest for glory (a not uncommon goal for those best suited to these wands), I have known laurel wands perform powerful and sometimes lethal magic. Laurel wands are sometimes called fickle, but this is unfair. The laurel wand seems unable to tolerate laziness in a possessor, and it is in such conditions that it is most easily and willingly won away. Otherwise, it will cleave happily to its first match forever, and indeed has the unusual and engaging attribute of issuing a spontaneous lightning strike if another witch or wizard attempts to steal it.” Maple: “I have often found that those chosen by maple wands are by nature travellers and explorers; they are not stay-at-home wands, and prefer ambition in their witch or wizard, otherwise their magic grows heavy and lacklustre. Fresh challenges and regular changes of scene cause this wand to literally shine, burnishing itself as it grows, with its partner, in ability and status. This is a beautiful and desirable wood, and wand quality maple has been among the most costly for centuries. Possession of a maple wand has long been a mark of status, because of its reputation as the wand of high achievers.” Pear: “This golden-toned wood produces wands of splendid magical powers, which give of their best in the hands of the warm-hearted, the generous and the wise. Possessors of pear wands are, in my experience, usually popular and well-respected. I do not know of a single instance where a pear wand has been discovered in the possession of a Dark witch or wizard. Pear wands are among the most resilient, and I have often observed that they may still present a remarkable appearance of newness, even after many years of hard use.” Pine: “The straight-grained pine wand always chooses an independent, individual master who may be perceived as a loner, intriguing and perhaps mysterious. Pine wands enjoy being used creatively, and unlike some others, will adapt unprotestingly to new methods and spells. Many wandmakers insist that pine wands are able to detect, and perform best for, owners who are destined for long lives, and I can confirm this in as much as I have never personally known the master of a pine wand to die young. The pine wand is one of those that is most sensitive to non-verbal magic.” Poplar: “If you seek integrity, search first among the poplars. Here is a wand to rely upon, of consistency, strength and uniform power, always happiest when working with a witch or wizard of clear moral vision. There is a tired old joke among lesser wandmakers that no poplar wand has ever chosen a politician, but here they show their lamentable ignorance.”
Red Oak: “You will often hear the ignorant say that red oak is an infallible sign of its owner’s hot temper. In fact, the true match for a red oak wand is possessed of unusually fast reactions, making it a perfect duelling wand. Less common than English oak, I have found that its ideal master is light of touch, quick-witted and adaptable, often the creator of distinctive, trademark spells, and a good man or woman to have beside one in a fight. Red oak wands are, in my opinion, among the most handsome.” Redwood: “Wand-quality redwood is in short supply, yet constant demand, due to its reputation for bringing good fortune to its owner. As is usually the case with wandlore, the general populace have the truth back to front: redwood wands are not themselves lucky, but are strongly attracted to witches and wizards who already possess the admirable ability to fall on their feet, to make the right choice, to snatch advantage from catastrophe. The combination of such a witch or wizard with a redwood wand is always intriguing, and I generally expect to hear of exciting exploits when I send this special pairing out from my workshop.” Rowan: “Rowan wood has always been much-favoured for wands, because it is reputed to be more protective than any other, and in my experience renders all manner of defensive charms especially strong and difficult to break. It is commonly stated that no dark witch or wizard ever owned a rowan wand, and I cannot recall a single instance where one of my own rowan wands has gone on to do evil in the world. Rowan is most happily placed with the clear-headed and the pure-hearted, but this reputation for virtue ought not to fool anyone – these wands are the equal of any, often the better, and frequently out-perform others in duels.” Silver Lime: “This unusual and highly attractive wand wood was greatly in vogue in the nineteenth century. Demand outstripped supply, and unscrupulous wandmakers dyed substandard woods in an effort to fool purchasers into believing that they had purchased silver lime. The reasons for these wands’ desirability lay not only in their unusually handsome appearance, but also because they had a reputation for performing best for Seers and those skilled in Legilimency, mysterious arts both, which consequently gave the possessor of a silver lime wand considerable status.” Spruce: “Unskilled wandmakers call spruce a difficult wood, but in doing so they reveal their own ineptitude. It is quite true that it requires particular deftness to work with spruce, which produces wands that are ill-matched with cautious or nervous natures, and become positively dangerous in fumbling fingers. The spruce wand requires a firm hand, because it often appears to have its own ideas about what magic it ought to be called upon to produce. However, when a spruce wand meets its match – which, in my experience, is a bold spell-caster with a good sense of humour – it becomes a superb helper, intensely loyal to their owners and capable of producing particularly flamboyant and dramatic effects.” Sycamore: “The sycamore makes a questing wand, eager for new experience and losing brilliance if engaged in mundane activities. It is a quirk of these handsome wands that they may combust if allowed to become ‘bored’, and many witches and wizards, settling down into middle age, are disconcerted to find their trusty wand bursting into flame in their hand as they ask it, one more time, to fetch their slippers. As may be deduced, the sycamore’s ideal owner is curious, vital and adventurous, and when paired with such an owner, it demonstrates a capacity to learn and adapt that earns it a rightful place among the world’s most highly-prized wand woods.” Vine: “The druids considered anything with a woody stem as a tree, and vine makes wands of such a special nature that I have been happy to continue their ancient tradition. Vine wands are among the less common types, and I have been intrigued to notice that their owners are nearly always those witches or wizards who seek a greater purpose, who have a vision beyond the ordinary and who frequently astound those who think they know them best. Vine wands seem strongly attracted by personalities with hidden depths, and I have found them more sensitive than any other when it comes to instantly detecting a prospective match. Reliable sources claim that these wands can emit magical effects upon the mere entrance into their room of a suitable owner, and I have twice observed the phenomenon in my own shop.” Walnut: “Highly intelligent witches and wizards ought to be offered a walnut wand for trial first, because in nine cases out of ten, the two will find in each other their ideal mate. Walnut wands are often found in the hands of magical innovators and inventors; this is a handsome wood possessed of unusual versatility and adaptability. A note of caution, however: while some woods are difficult to dominate, and may resist the performance of spells that are foreign to their natures, the walnut wand will, once subjugated, perform any task its owner desires, provided that the user is of sufficient brilliance. This makes for a truly lethal weapon in the hands of a witch or wizard of no conscience, for the wand and the wizard may feed from each other in a particularly unhealthy manner.” Willow: “Willow is an uncommon wand wood with healing power, and I have noted that the ideal owner for a willow wand often has some (usually unwarranted) insecurity, however well they may try and hide it. While many confident customers insist on trying a willow wand (attracted by their handsome appearance and well-founded reputation for enabling advanced, non-verbal magic) my willow wands have consistently selected those of greatest potential, rather than those who feel they have little to learn. It has always been a proverb in my family that he who has furthest to travel will go fastest with willow.” Yew: “Yew wands are among the rarer kinds, and their ideal matches are likewise unusual, and occasionally notorious. The wand of yew is reputed to endow its possessor with the power of life and death, which might, of course, be said of all wands; and yet yew retains a particularly dark and fearsome reputation in the spheres of duelling and all curses. However, it is untrue to say (as those unlearned in wandlore often do) that those who use yew wands are more likely to be attracted to the Dark Arts than another. The witch or wizard best suited to a yew wand might equally prove a fierce protector of others. Wands hewn from these most long-lived trees have been found in the possession of heroes quite as often as of villains. Where wizards have been buried with wands of yew, the wand generally sprouts into a tree guarding the dead owner’s grave. What is certain, in my experience, is that the yew wand never chooses either a mediocre or a timid owner.”
Types of cores and meanings:
Unicorn: “Unicorn hair generally produces the most consistent magic, and is least subject to fluctuations and blockages. Wands with unicorn cores are generally the most difficult to turn to the Dark Arts. They are the most faithful of all wands, and usually remain strongly attached to their first owner, irrespective of whether he or she was an accomplished witch or wizard. Minor disadvantages of unicorn hair are that they do not make the most powerful wands (although the wand wood may compensate) and that they are prone to melancholy if seriously mishandled, meaning that the hair may ‘die’ and need replacing.” Dragon: “As a rule, dragon heartstrings produce wands with the most power, and which are capable of the most flamboyant spells. Dragon wands tend to learn more quickly than other types. While they can change allegiance if won from their original master, they always bond strongly with the current owner. The dragon wand tends to be easiest to turn to the Dark Arts, though it will not incline that way of its own accord. It is also the most prone of the three cores to accidents, being somewhat temperamental.” Phoenix: “This is the rarest core type. Phoenix feathers are capable of the greatest range of magic, though they may take longer than either unicorn or dragon cores to reveal this. They show the most initiative, sometimes acting of their own accord, a quality that many witches and wizards dislike. Phoenix feather wands are always the pickiest when it comes to potential owners, for the creature from which they are taken is one of the most independent and detached in the world. These wands are the hardest to tame and to personalise, and their allegiance is usually hard won.”
Wand lengths and flexibility with meanings:
“Many wandmakers simply match the wand length to the size of the witch or wizard who will use it, but this is a crude measure, and fails to take into account many other, important considerations. In my experience, longer wands might suit taller wizards, but they tend to be drawn to bigger personalities, and those of a more spacious and dramatic style of magic. Neater wands favour more elegant and refined spell-casting. However, no single aspect of wand composition should be considered in isolation of all the others, and the type of wood, the core and the flexibility may either counterbalance or enhance the attributes of the wand’s length. Most wands will be in the range of between nine and fourteen inches. While I have sold extremely short wands (eight inches and under) and very long wands (over fifteen inches), these are exceptionally rare. In the latter case, a physical peculiarity demanded the excessive wand length. However, abnormally short wands usually select those in whose character something is lacking, rather than because they are physically undersized (many small witches and wizards are chosen by longer wands). Wand flexibility or rigidity denotes the degree of adaptability and willingness to change possessed by the wand-and-owner pair – although, again, this factor ought not to be considered separately from the wand wood, core and length, nor of the owner’s life experience and style of magic, all of which will combine to make the wand in question unique.”
